HAVE AN EVENT? HAVE AN EVENT?
Joy Ranch of South Dakota
WRITTEN BY GABBY SUDENGA + PHOTOS BY ALANA SNYDERNestled among vast, open spaces and Midwestern beauty, Joy Ranch of South Dakota in Florence is more than just a location on the map. It serves as a beacon of hope and a space for healing for anyone facing adversity.
Joy Nelson, president of the board of directors and benefactor of Joy Ranch, shares that when she originally purchased her 126-acre ranch near Watertown in 1989, she didn’t foresee this future.
“The only thing that was on the land when I purchased it was one single cottonwood tree,” reminisced Nelson.
For her entire life, Nelson shared a love affair with horses and an understanding of how horses can help people. After settling historical buildings and constructing her new home on her land, she built an indoor riding arena to hold her national championship horses.
As travel slowed to a halt, Nelson began to host equine programs in the comfort of her backyard. With the help of volunteers, the group hosted entities like the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and veterans suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder.
“I understood how horses could benefit their quality of life,” said Nelson.
Since the beginning, it has been Nelson’s calling to help those living with medical, physical, or emotional challenges have a new quality of life.
Through the evolution of the property, Nelson ensured that the ranch would be accessible to all ages and abilities.
“The entire facility was built from the ground up to be accessible, from the paths and walking trails to the doorknobs, tables, and doorways,” she said.
SOUTH DAKOTA HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE
IN 2016, JOY NELSON WAS INDUCTED INTO THE SOUTH DAKOTA HALL OF FAME FOR HER EFFORTS WITH JOY RANCH OF SOUTH DAKOTA.
Joy Ranch offers a varied and diverse landscape, packed with lively activities and a plethora of chances to explore.
One activity within the western playground is dedicated to the majestic bond between horses and humans.
“Horses are very intuitive creatures; they’re able to pick up on people’s emotions and form a bond with them,” explained Nelson. “For those experiencing troubles in their lives, their confidence is shattered, and it’s my goal to help them regain it.”
The equine-based activities are offered to visitors with disabilities. The adaptable equipment and passionate staff ensure that no matter the obstacle, everyone can hop on the saddle.
Nelson continued on to share a special moment she experienced with a visitor and her horses.
A young man with Tetra-Amelia Syndrome arrived at the ranch with doubts of being able to ride a horse, but Nelson responded with “Yes you can.”
With the support of dedicated volunteers and an adaptable saddle, the young man was horseback riding.
“It was the highlight of his life,” reminisced Nelson. “These are the kinds of things that impact people’s lives. We allow them to do something they thought they were never able to do.”
Joy Ranch also offers trail rides, horse lessons, guided scenic routes, and wagon rides. A heated riding arena is also available, perfect for year-round camps and mission-based programs.
Nelson revealed that all 15 of her missionbased programs are equine centered.
“Our mission programs are broad-based due to the diverse challenges people face. As a result, we designed our programs and facilities to serve a greater population,” she said.
Joy Ranch continually hosts non-missionbased events such as weddings, corporate retreats, quilting retreats, family reunions, and more.
“There’s not an event that you can create that we don’t do. Mission-based or not, we serve it all,” said Nelson.
Another activity allows guests to travel back in time through the main westernthemed attraction, 1880s Town
The town provides old-time fun and comfort to those who visit. The on-site retreat center hosts three large meeting rooms, 16 themed retreat rooms, and a bunk house sleeping 72, perfect for various events or an overnight stay.
“We have one of the most expansive collections of western memorabilia in eastern South Dakota that adorns the walls,” said Nelson.

On the lower level of the center, there’s a new world of adventure. Wild Bill’s Game Room offers family fun with pool tables, ping pong tables, and foosball.
Visitors have the opportunity to explore accessible outdoor recreational activities, including archery, basketball, a playground, and the Ranchyard Petting Zoo
“Our petting zoo has six ducks, eight chickens, a pony, two miniature horses, and a miniature donkey,” stated Nelson.
The outdoor activities don’t just end there. Wander down to Lake Lyle
for an afternoon of merriment.
“On the lakeshore, we have an accessible fishing dock, as well as a dock with kayaks, canoes, and pontoons,” shared Nelson.
Surrounding the body of water are walking trails that also intersect with four different parks along the way. Continue your adventure outdoors by setting up a campsite on Coyote Campground.
The campground has 11 sites including electricity, water, a dump station, space for a fire pit, and picnic tables. One special characteristic of the campground is the unbelievable sunsets, says Nelson.
WESTERN RENDEZVOUS
ATTEND THE FIRST ANNUAL JOY RANCH RENDEZVOUS ON AUGUST 19, WITH SPECIAL NATIONAL GUESTS ONE ARM BANDIT AND MACHINERY PETE .
“The sunsets over the hills and across the lake are phenomenal,” she said.
The serene outdoor experiences foster a sense of adventure, self-discovery, and hope.
As Joy Ranch continues to touch the lives of countless children and adults, its vision for the future remains steadfast. Nelson says they strive to expand their reach, property, and programs, ensuring that no one goes unnoticed or unsupported.
“We have been described as the best-kept secret in South Dakota, but we want to push beyond that,” revealed Nelson. “Many visitors don’t realize that our whole property is accessible.”
Holding a strong commitment to fostering healing, resilience, and joy, Joy Ranch continues to stand as a beacon of hope, inspiring others to make a positive change in others' lives.

A Capital Time Pierre Road Trip
Written by Greta Smith + photos by Cailyn PattersonTo kick off tourism season, 605's Cailyn Patterson, John Snyder, and I buckled into the 605 Sprinter Van (which the team has since named Vincent Van-Go) to head out to Pierre.
We made the three hour drive to the state capital to experience what Tia Kafka of Visit Pierre describes as a hospitable community that’s all about “welcoming visitors, being kind, and helping people out.”
Our first stop was checking into The Historic Farr House, where co-owner Ashley Boone was waiting for us in her favorite spot on the property: the front porch.
Built by Dr. Mary Noyes Farr and her husband (Civil War colonel Edward P. Farr) in 1904, The Farr House has South Dakota legacy stamped all over it, as it was also lived in for a time by former South Dakota Governor Peter Norbeck.
“It’s nice to be able to say we live in the state capital, and there’s a very small town feel to it.”
Boone and her husband Kevin Kumpf host events in the space, but it’s also available for tours and lodging.
“No event is too small,” said Boone.
The couple curates the space playfully, juxtaposing the house’s historicity with an eclectic, fun, and livable design that provides something for every visitor.
“Houses aren’t just neat in their own sense; they are unique because of the people who have called them home,” said Boone.
After we were settled into The Farr House, the team headed into town to check out St. Charles Lounge and Crabby Shell's Seafood Shack , and then treated ourselves to some ice cream at Zesto
Ashley Boone
“It’s neat to think about what kind of impact you can have on your community.”ASHLEY BOONE AND KEVIN KUMPF
DEREK DIEDRICH
The next day we were up early to make the drive across the Missouri River to visit Fort Pierre and check out Fun Time Rentals
We met up with owner Derek Diedrich for our boat rental and got a tour of his storefront, where clients can rent out everything from inflatables to campers to snow cone machines. For Diedrich it’s always been in the name of family, fun, and establishing relationships with his customers.
“We aren't some tourist trap place that doesn't care about you,” he said. "We are actually concerned and do care about how you feel and how everything goes.”
Diedrich drove our rental boat to the river, where the team took turns driving the boat around, taking photos, and enjoying the beautiful scenery.

Returning the rental to Diedrich, we proceeded hungrily back to Pierre for our next stop: Richie Z’s Brickhouse BBQ & Grill
Opening in October 2017, the award-winning restaurant serves what owner Richie Zabel considers some of the best barbeque in the country.
“Everything is handmade here,” he said. “Every pasta, every salad—everything is made fresh.”
Zabel told me that while Richie Z’s is known for barbeque, that’s not all they do.
“We have two bars, one upstairs and one downstairs. We also do steaks, fish, seafood, salads, pastas, and other specials, plus we cater,” he said.
Soon enough, the food was brought out. Zabel walked us through the dishes: The Boss Burger, St. Louis Style Ribs, BBQ Santa Fe Salad , Pork & Mac , The Booty & Belly Sandwich, and The Two Meat Platter with chicken and brisket.
With rumbling stomachs, we got shots of all the food before diving in. While John made plans to come back, a satisfied Cailyn packed a to-go box to the brim.

As the team browsed the shop, Samuelson shared more about her relationships with the vendors, telling me their names, products, hometowns, and her personal experiences on the farms and with their businesses.
Along with working with her employees, Samuelson says that her favorite part of her job is “the excitement that people have when they find South Dakota goodies that they can send to others.”
As the team swung by Zesto for one more ice cream cone before heading home, I reflected on Kafka’s words.
“Visitors are really amazed at the small town feel of Pierre and how welcome they feel,” she said.
As a first-time visitor, I completely agree.

bookworm
Reading is my favorite pastime, and I feel lucky that we share a building with Mitzi’s Books so I can run upstairs and pick out the latest release as soon as it’s out. I also love walking over to Again Books and perusing their shelves for my next read.
green thumb enthusiast
I have no self-control when it comes to buying new plants for my house. I’m a frequent flier at Jolly Lane Greenhouse, and while my husband tells me we’re going to run out of space in our home, there will always be a spot for a new plant to go.
happy hour
Happy hour with friends at Windsor Block Bar is always a blast. The space is gorgeous, and the staff is super knowledgeable; you can tell them what style of drink you’d like and they’ll whip up something perfectly crafted to fit you. I also love they have a mocktail menu—the Pa Noma is perfect on a summer night.
movie mania
My husband and I love the experience of going to a movie at the Elks Theatre. Stuffing yourself with extra buttered popcorn, drinking a massive pop, and watching a movie on the big screen is one of the simplest joys in life.
self care advocate
I’m a huge advocate for self-care, and Mystique Edge Day Spa & Salon is one of my favorite places to relax.

Since 2019, Blue Rock Bar & Grill has been a dining destination for locals and visitors alike that blends delicious cuisine, warm hospitality, and a lively atmosphere.
The rustic, yet contemporary décor, adorned with touches of natural granite and stone, creates a relaxed and comfortable setting, creating the unique backdrop for any occasion.
One highlighted aspect of Blue Rock Bar & Grill —located at the Sanford Sports Complex just off Interstate 29—l is its educated and dedicated culinary team.
“We all come from different backgrounds and states, so with the knowledge we have gained from our pasts, we try to implement that here,” said Juan Niño, both operations manager and executive chef.
The team of chefs craft an extensive menu that showcases unique flavors with detailed touches and fusional elements, including—but not limited to—classic American, Italian, Asian, and Mexican influences.

Start your meal with shareables and light bites like Beef Chislic, Chicharrón Nachos, Walleye Fingers, Chicken Yakitori, and Stensland Cheese Curds.
Niño says that the flagship of their menu is their smash burgers.
“Our burgers are made to order with locallysourced wagyu beef from North 40 Premium Beef and freshly-baked buns from Breadsmith,” he added.

EXPLORE BEY
In addition to its culinary offerings, Blue Rock also offers live entertainment from May to August to enhance the dining experience. Local musicians and bands take the stage, providing a vibrant backdrop to a customer's night out.
Some of the best features of the local eatery are the patio spaces, which are ideal for a meal and drink in the warm weather with music and good company.
“Our patios give us the flexibility to offer different options,” said Niño. “With the live music we host on Friday nights and the fire pits on The Upper Deck , it’s the perfect place to spend a summer evening.”
Decorated with throwback South Dakota sports memorabilia, The Upper Deck brings a sense of nostalgia to
dinners. Equipped with a rooftop patio and indoor/outdoor garage doors, customers can enjoy a more intimate experience and breathtaking views.
The Tailgate is where the party starts, says Niño. The space transforms into a patio courtyard with four roll-up garage doors, providing a clear view of the Sanford Pentagon and Sanford Fieldhouse
Along with the Upper Deck and the Tailgate are The Sports Bar and The Lodge
The Tailgate and Sports Bar areas offer a flexible dining space for families, teams, and groups of all sizes to fuel up before a tournament or to celebrate a victory after a hard-fought game.

Spearfish Canyon Lodge
WRITTEN BY GABBY SUDENGA + PHOTOS BY JOHN SNYDERWith summer in full swing, 605’s John and Alana Snyder set out for a family getaway with their son Owen to Spearfish Canyon Lodge
Located on the Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway, the lodge stands as an oasis for adventurers, nature enthusiasts, and those seeking a serene retreat.
“The lodge is like a one-stop shop; when you come to the resort, there are various activities you can do there with your family,” said social media director Kayla Betten
Betten says the lodge has everything from hiking, UTV/ATV rentals, fishing equipment rentals, on-site restaurants, large suites, hot tubs, and more.
The first stop upon the Snyders’ arrival was lunch at The Latchstring Restaurant With over 100 years of service, there is something for everyone, whether it be a romantic dinner for two or the entire family.
Dine in the rustic lodge setting or enjoy a meal on the outdoor patio with a breathtaking view of the canyon walls.
“All of our items are homemade,” said Betten. “We have recipes that were created over 100 years ago and are still used today.”
After a short chat with their server, Joseph Garza, John and Alana sat down to enjoy Latchstring’s Cheese Curds and two of their most popular menu items, the Bison Stew and Blackened Trout
The Bison Stew is a homemade stew with buffalo sirloin, potatoes, and a variety of fresh vegetables and herbs, all served in a savory homemade bread bowl.
A popular recommendation for the dish is to top the stew with Corn Cakes.
“Our corn cakes are from another homemade recipe that’s been around for years,” said Betten. “It’s like a spicy corn fritter that adds a new element of flavor to the bison stew.”
The Blackened Trout is a light sandwich topped with a rainbow trout filet is served with lettuce, tomato, cucumber, and lemon aioli on a toasted hoagie bun.
“Trout has become a staple since we’re in close proximity to Spearfish Creek ,” explained Betten.
Try other popular dishes like Chislic , the Pan-seared Walleye, or the featured pasta or burger of the week.
“It’s fun for our kitchen to come up with something new every week, and it’s something our guests really enjoy,” shared Betten.
Betten suggests that everyone end their meal with a sweet homemade dessert (especially a Caramel or Cinnamon Roll).
The Latchstring Restaurant cheese curds were voted as 605 Magazine’s Best Cheese Curds in the 2019 605 Best Issue.

Inspired by Deadwood legend Calamity Jane, the suite carries the character and aspects of life as the famous namesake.
The Calamity suite boasts a spacious king bed dressed in extra blankets, robes, and a stuffed black bear (Owen’s favorite part of the room).

At the heart of conserving and protecting natural treasures throughout the state lies the South Dakota Parks and Wildlife Foundation
The foundation's drive and efforts to protect the state's resources are done in many ways, but in large are accomplished by providing financial support to assist South Dakota Department of Game, Fish, and Parks with priority projects. Together, they make a great team.
Over the past 15 years, over $26 million has been raised through private donors. These donations bridge the gap between public and private funding and have helped to
build visitor centers, the Outdoor Campus in Sioux Falls and Rapid City, and enhance hiking and biking trails, to name a few.
“We exist to be the non-profit arm of the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish, and Parks,” said Kristina Coby, executive director of the foundation.
Since 1985, the two organizations have collaborated closely to secure funding for priority parks and wildlife-related projects identified by the Department.
“We offer the ability for private citizens to contribute land, funds, or other resources to the state,” said Coby.
The South Dakota Parks and Wildlife Foundation is governed by a dedicated board of directors who volunteer their time and expertise to further the foundation’s mission.
“Our role is to be active, involved, and engaged in the foundation's mission,” said board member Rollie Noem. “We’re involved in the various aspects of finance, marketing, and properties.”
The board consists of individuals from various backgrounds, including conservationists, outdoor enthusiasts, and community representatives. They bring a diverse range of skills and knowledge to guide the foundation’s initiatives and efforts.
“My true volunteers are my board,” said Coby. “Our board is comprised of members from all over the state that know niche communities, so I feel that I have a reach into every neighborhood.”
The members actively engage in fundraising campaigns, network with potential donors, participate in community outreach programs, and guide the organization’s involvement in projects initiated by South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks.
“From a board perspective, it’s not about just identifying donors,” said Noem. “We work to form long-term relationships with people that allow them to become more knowledgeable and informed about the opportunity to make a difference in South Dakota’s outdoor heritage. Our goal is to make a friend first, and the rest will follow in due course.”
“The staff supports the mission of the organization by performing the work,” Coby added.
Their commitment and passion for preserving the state's natural heritage are instrumental in achieving the foundation's goals.
The foundation is committed to fostering an appreciation for nature and outdoor recreation among residents, particularly the younger generation. Through various educational programs, it has maintained its connection with individuals by encouraging environmental stewardship and promoting outdoor activities.
The Outdoor Campus in Sioux Falls has done just that and has offered education in hunting, fishing, conservation science, environmental science, and outdoor science for 25 years.
In celebration of its 25th anniversary, the education center is expanding tremendously.
“The reality is that we’re bursting at the seams,” laughed Coby. “We want to bring the building up to speed.”
As part of the expansion, the building will include additional classrooms, an indoor range with 12 archery and BB gun shooting lanes, a walk-in cooler and area for processing wild game and wild game cooking, an outdoor smoking and grilling patio, and more.
“My favorite part of working with the foundation is the genuine people who have a genuine passion for all things outdoors.”
Kristina CobyTHE SOUTH DAKOTA PARKS & WILDLIFE FOUNDATION BOARD DISCUSSES THE EXPANSION. FORT SISSETON HISTORIC STATE PARK
“The indoor archery and BB gun range are going to provide a space that can bring outdoor skills inside during the harsh winter months,” said Coby.
The building will also receive an expansion of office space for interns, updated restrooms, and a nursing mother’s room.
“It’s an important milestone to celebrate 25 years of programming, and now the community can help us grow into the next 25,” said Coby.
The foundation is continually working to remove obstacles in order to allow everyone to get outdoors and enjoy all that nature has to offer. With that in mind, and in addition to the Outdoor Campus expansion, the foundation is also supporting Operation Mobility
The campaign will allow those with physical challenges to continue being part of cherished Midwestern traditions.
“Operation Mobility is all about making South Dakota one of the most accessible states in the country when it comes to outdoor recreation,” expressed Coby.
“We want to give every citizen the opportunity to have some skin in the game when it comes to our outdoor heritage.”
Kristina Coby
She continued to say an effort is in the works to provide and distribute 30 all-terrain track chairs and trailers across the state. The chairs can be used for hunting in the field, fishing on the bank, hiking in the parks, and more.
“These chairs and units will help get those people back in the field,” she smiled.
The first chair was purchased by a family who, like so many South Dakota families, holds the opening day of hunting season near to their hearts. This family hosted a hunter who was a paraplegic and used a wheelchair in the field.
This first chair assisted its first hunter at the Oahe Downstream Disabled Hunt during the 2022 deer season.
“The hunter had a team or assistant with him and took him to a prime spot, and he was able to shoot the deer and pull it out of the field himself with the chair,” reflected Coby. “He hadn’t been able to do that in 25 years.”
Through their continuous efforts and dedication, the South Dakota Parks & Wildlife Foundation continues to make an impact on the state’s parks, wildlife, outdoor recreation, and natural resources, ensuring their preservation for future generations to enjoy.

waking up to my 2 year old kicking me in the belly, a kiss from my husband, yoga, and a London Fog (with almond milk and a teaspoon of brown sugar).
AN IMPORTANT THING I’VE LEARNED THROUGH MY BUSINESS IS…
that we, as people, have to get out of our heads and thoughts. Words are powerful, and when you tell yourself you can’t do something, you're manifesting that into your physical world. Falling off the paddle board is not the end of the world, and no one is judging you! The majority of people who come out don’t fall off their board unless they want to get wet (which is very refreshing on a hot summer day). The only people falling off are the ones telling themselves they are going to fall off or fail.
Yoga Fix
STARTING JULY 2023, WILLETT WILL OFFER YOGA BY THE WATER CLASSES AT LAKE LORRAINE FOR THOSE WHO WISH TO STAY ON DRY LAND.
IN THE WINTER MONTHS, YOU CAN CATCH WILLETT FOR FLOATING YOGA CLASSES AT EMBE IN DOWNTOWN SIOUX FALLS.
MY
FAVORITE PLACES IN SIOUX FALLS ARE…
Lake Lorraine, downtown Sioux Falls, Sioux Falls’ public pools and parks, Wild Water West , Nautical Bowls, Lalibela Restaurant, Bin 201, and the Jones421 Market
AN AMBITIOUS GOAL OF MINE IS…
to teach paddle boarding and yoga in our off season on the ocean somewhere.
MY INSPIRATION COMES FROM…
Gillian Gibree, owner of Paddle into Fitness, and all other women-owned businesses. As women, we hold many roles, and to be the owner of a business takes a lot of pain, sweat, and tears. But it also takes a lot of laughter and fun as well!

DR. HOLLI CHARBONNEAU
Throughout Dr. Holli Charbonneau’s, M.D. 11 years working as a doctor in the emergency room, she has seen the effects of IV therapy firsthand. She discovered the benefits it could provide to those in need of recovery, energy, basic hydration, and more.
Over the years, Charbonneau noticed two parallel trends: the increase in ER visits due to dehydration and the shift in people wanting more control over their health and wellness.
She thought, why not couple the trends and create a business that allows people to make their own decisions for low-risk treatments and is time manageable?
As a result, she opened Vital Flow Infusions
“We started this business with the idea of being a concierge mobile IV clinic that provides IV hydration therapy and vitamin injections directly to you,” said chief operating officer Jared Pomranky
Vital Flow Infusions offers various hydration drips that are suitable for different purposes.
“The way it works is that customers can call our office and talk with a registered nurse to discuss the best drip for them,” explained Pomranky. “Our nurses will review the customer's medical history, medications and allergies, and ensure that the treatment is safe.”
Vital Flow’s team is dedicated to helping its customers recover from anything that’s causing them to feel less than great.
Charbonneau shares more about the benefits of IV hydration therapy and vitamin injections.
Written by Gabby Sudenga + Photos by John SnyderWhat are the benefits of IV hydration therapy?
IV therapy provides quick and efficient hydration with electrolytes available to your body immediately without needing to be absorbed through the digestive tract. It provides more benefits by effectively treating vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. Depending on the IV drip, benefits can include increased energy, recovery from illnesses and hangovers, increased focus, a better mood, help with immunity, recovery from athletic performances, and better hair, skin, and nails.
What are the benefits of vitamin injections?
Our vitamin injections have many of the same benefits as our IVs without the hydration aspect. They’re quick and easy to receive and can help with vitamin deficiencies, energy, mood, focus, and increased metabolism.
How do these treatments increase energy and focus?
While simply getting hydrated can help with energy and focus, specific vitamins like B12 and B5 do a great job of giving you extra energy. Vitamin B12 helps your cells metabolize glucose to create the energy necessary to power your body, leaving you feeling invigorated and focused. Vitamin B5 helps your body metabolize fats, proteins, and enzymes, which are critical in converting food into energy. It also helps your body produce red blood cells and hormones. Restoring vitamin B5 lets your body function more effectively, ultimately improving overall energy levels.
What parties and events do you attend?
The parties and events we attend are at our clients' homes or places of business. This includes groups of people getting ready for a big night out, bachelor/bachelorette parties, corporate events, and group hangover drips when everyone knows they’ll need a little help the next day.
What do you love about serving the community in South Dakota?
Our registered nurses will tell you the same, but the best part about serving our clients is helping people feel better. We get to help our clients be their best selves, and it’s great to help educate people on IV therapy and help them on their wellness journey.
