Mary Jo Wegner originally inspired the project with her love of nature while battling leukemia. After her passing in 2003, Wegner’s family began funding for the arboretum.

“She loved to come to this property and just walk. She spent time at the Minnesota arboretum and thought that Sioux Falls should have something like that,” said Gildemaster. “People like that have the vision. The rest of us just have to take it and keep it moving forward.”

“When you get here, you’re like, ‘Really?

This is part of Sioux Falls?’ It’s a neat little place for people to discover nature and just get outside and do something.”

Trails ready for exploring are open 365 days per year. The paths are also a haven for leashed four-legged friends to stretch and enjoy the outdoors.

“You get down in there and you don’t hear the traffic as much,” she said. “There’s birds singing and a little stream that runs through... it’s just like you’re in a whole different place.”

The Arboretum’s charm doesn’t stop outdoors. The Mabel and Judy Jasper Education Center was built in 2013.

Visitors can find friendly faces, trail maps, gifts, and rentable spaces for events. The one-room schoolhouse replica is also a must-see. The room was inspired by 90 years of teaching between Judy Jasper, who funded the facility, and her mother.

“We’re a bit of a wedding venue.

Photographers are coming out to take pictures of families and seniors,” continued Gildemaster. “It becomes a beautiful backdrop for things like that.”

Gildemaster worked with the Sioux Falls Park and Recreation department for 26 years before becoming the arboretum society’s first full-time executive director.

She looks forward to growth at the arboretum.

“We want to expand hours and get more things going in different times of the year.

We have a master plan, so we know what directions we want to go into. It’s just a matter of raising the money.”

“Judy wanted to have something where kids could really understand what it was like in the old days,” said Gildemaster.

With free admission and ambitious plans, the Arboretum’s future looks as bright as its freshly bloomed peonies.

The facility and parking areas also reflect the value placed on sustainability there.

“We just want people to come out and see it. Come off the highway and take a walk.”

“There’s a well inside the building, and we draw heat off of it in the winter and cool the building in the summer,” she explained. “Half of our concrete here is impervious, so it serves as part of the drainage system.”

Owners Drew Delvaux and Zeke Matthews started the business out as a hobby.

“I was doing this as I was working as a counselor, and I just kind of fell in love with it,” said Delvaux. “I’ve always loved vintage furniture, and it always bummed me out when I would see it kind of neglected. So I just wanted to bring them back to life so people could enjoy them and give them a new life.”

Now owning a showroom in the former WNAX Fuel Station from the 1920s, customers can make appointments or stop by at limited hours over the weekend.

The duo specialize in revitalizing antique and vintage furniture, including buffets, hutches, dressers, and more. But they don’t exclude other styles.

“We generally do vintage furniture, but we do some modern stuff as well,” said Delvaux. “We do a wide variety of things.”

Delvaux explained, “Everything is hand-painted, so it’s different when you come in every weekend because we’re always moving around furniture.”

“Our showroom is secondary to our Facebook page,” said Delveaux.

It’s hard to talk about Yankton and not hear about Charlie’s Pizza House.

The oldest pizzeria in South Dakota opened in 1959 by original owner, Charlie Chato.

A couple owned it for decades, and the most recent owner is Chuck Rezac, who purchased Charlie’s two years ago.

“The first night we bought the place and took over, there was this couple that went straight to that corner booth and said, ‘Well you guys can’t change anything. This is our 40th wedding anniversary and we had our first date in this booth,’” said Rezac with a laugh.

That was also the opinion of many others, says Rezac, and thus he didn’t make too many changes. The mural filled with famous faces, like Marilyn Monroe and James Dean, stayed untouched, and even Bartholomew the 6-year-old piranha made the cut.

It was obvious nothing would change with the pizzas. Charlie’s has consistently made the list of 50 States 50 Pizzas by Food Network for the Festus, with Pepper-Jack covered meatballs, jalapeño, and sauerkraut.

Most of the specialty pizzas are named after celebrities and famous characters, like the Bette Davis with chicken, tomato, onion, and Alfredo sauce, or the Three Stooges with beef, bacon, and cheddar cheese, topped with dill pickles.

Other highlights include salads, garlic bread, and wings.

Built in 1928 by John Keller, the Ice House was the first artificial ice plant in the area. Unfortunately the individuals who were supposed to purchase the business lost financing due to the Great Depression, and then fell into the hands of Keller’s son-in-law, Iner Anderson.

After Prohibition, beer was sold there, and it became a fixture of Yankton. It is one of the only bars in the country with carhop service.

“People pull up and honk their horn, and we’ll come serve them,” said owner Carla Anderson.

The business has been in the family for 90 years, and has become known for patrons sitting on the “dock” in front of the establishment.

But that’s not the best part. After finishing your beer, you are encouraged to partake in the tradition of smashing the empty bottle against the brick wall beneath the dock.

Why? “I think people were just too lazy to get off the dock when they were done,” said Anderson.

ohn Koch of John Koch Construction wasn’t familiar with Yankton growing up. That is, until his oldest brother met a girl from the town filled with natural beauty.

“I had gone down there a couple of times, and I thought, ‘Holy smokes, it’s beautiful here.’ So over the next year or two I was determined to find a place,” he recalled.

Looking originally at lots, Koch soon discovered they were too pricey and didn’t fit what he was envisioning.

A realtor he was working with gave him a call one day, and informed him he needed to get there immediately to see a showing they were about to release.

“I cruised down there the very next morning, and it was kind a shabby A-Frame with a screen porch and living quarters off one side,” he said. “With that being said, we made an offer an hour later. So we went down to the fish shack, got cheese balls, made an offer, and got it.”

Now dubbed Cedar Ridge Hideway, the quaint red cabin with white trim was purchased in 2006, and has been a project of love for Koch over the years with art collections, new additions, and (most importantly) memories with friends and family.

Koch didn’t rent it out for six years, but realized after life commitments, a new Black Hills cabin in Lead (the Sheep Hill Chalet), and a growing family (wife Kaylee, and children Ivy, Leo, and Faye), it was time to consider it.

He said, “We had obligations April through May last year, and I thought, ‘What the hell is happening? We lost seven weeks [at the cabin].'”

Now available for all to enjoy, Koch gave 605 a look into the vacation rental home that can fit up to 16 guests.

“MY FAVORITE PART ABOUT THE CABIN IS THE FEELING I GET WHEN I GET THERE. I FEEL DETACHED FROM THE WORKLIFE AND THE ALL THE HUBBUB GOING ON. IT’S ALWAYS A RELIEF WHEN I STEP INSIDE.”

O NEW ADDITIONS “I fell in love with the quirkiness of the cabin,” said Koch. "I love A-Frames, and I love coming in the side porch. I didn’t want it to feel like a house, I wanted it to feel like a cabin.”

After the purchase, Koch immediately brought his crew down to “polish it up” for two months.

“Every year or two I made it a point to add something,” he said of the different phases.

The first was to build a deck off the front. They then put in an eight-foot glass door to bring in natural light.

The third living room has an 80-inch television with oversized leather couches and a place to play cards and hang out. A balcony is attached, overseeing the land.

They also added two bedrooms with jack and jill bathrooms.

“We spent all our time on that deck,” he said.

A couple years later, they added on to the kitchen.

“We got rid of that screened-in porch, pushed it out, and did a big room off of the kitchen and made a nice, big kitchen island.”

“It feels like a guest house but is fully connected,” he said. “It’s great for two families or so, because one can be on one wing of the house and the other on the other side.”

The Kochs’ most recent phase was two years ago when they removed the carport and added a whole new addition, which included a three-car garage and a living room with a full kitchenette above.

With all of the changes, there are now four bedrooms, three bathrooms, and two kitchens, equaling 3,200 square feet.

“There are beds everywhere,” laughed Koch.

The “Middle Room” connects everything and was the original living room.

“Before the two additions, this was it,” he said. “I’ve got a lot of memories for six-seven years of everyone having coffee in here, probably partially hung over.”

“It feels like it goes on forever,” said Koch. “My ideas with cabins is that if you go to them, the cabin itself is an escape. It’s not fun for me to travel an hour or three or four and walk into a place that’s off 57th Street in Sioux Falls.”

He describes Cedar Ridge Hideway as new construction with things that “are organic to the area with cabin flair.”

It appears the favorite is Rug & Relic, with rugs, mirrors, antique skis, and custom pieces, like the three engine head cover lights that “marry well with the river,” and the hanging lamp, entitled Flight Log.

“[Rug & Relic owner and artist] Steve Bormes said when he was building [Flight Log], it kept telling him to take his clothes off,” continued Koch.

“So he spent the majority of the time making it naked.”

“I told Steve and Tove this is like a showroom,” he said.

Other artists include famed Native American artist James Starkey, Along with art pieces, a lot of other elements fill the walls inside and out of the cabin. Most have no design rhyme or reason, but Koch likes it that way.

“Don’t worry about everything matching,” he said. “I think the worst thing someone can do is outfit a house in 24 hours. I think the things in this house tell a story, and it really has an eclectic vibe, and I like that in my cabins and my own house.”

O RUSTIC FURNITURE Koch says a lot of the furniture came from DeWitt Designs, and discusses how important quality is when furnishing a house or rental. His first quality piece was a couch in the main living room.

“This was my first big purchase at my house of ‘07,” he said. “It’s a hideabed. It's one of those things that if you buy nice stuff right away, it’s a great investment for the long run.”

The family wanted to go for a rustic-modern vibe. This includes a moose chandelier from Scheels and log furniture from Slumberland.

“This was my first rental I’ve ever done, and I forgot I had to furnish it,” continued Koch. “I went down to Slumberland in Yankton, and they were awesome, so I bought this log furniture. I don’t have plans on changing it.”

The birchwood bed and several tables were built by Jerry Hauk, who also owns Monks House of Ale Repute in Sioux Falls.

“I feel rustic pieces are timeless,” said Koch.

Experience South Dakota outdoors with a ride, slide, zip, or climb at Rushmore Tramway Adventures in Keystone. Known for attractions like the Alpine Slide, Aerial Adventure Park, Jump Tour, and two-hour Pinnacle Zip Tour, the crew is building a brand new, state-of-the-art, snowless, summer-time tubing hill. 605 chatted with operations manager Cameron Fullerton about what he likes to do when he’s out and about in and outside of work.

I really enjoy the “pinnacle” of the Pinnacle Zip Tour [1] at the Rushmore Tramway Adventures. This place was the drive behind our entire motivation for the tour, and is one of the best ways to see Mount Rushmore. We knew we had to showcase this point, even when we didn’t own it.

The top deck of our Tramway is also a favorite of mine. I spent a large part of my childhood learning to work here, and now doing morning yoga with any interested employees on there is a great way to utilize it.

One of my go-to spots is Halley’s 1880 Store [2], or “Halley’s East” in Keystone. Cheap beer and antiques tickle my fancy. Never been? Don’t miss a chance to stop by for some great conversation.

Skogen Kitchen [3] in Custer is always worth the drive. I enjoy eating food that I can’t pronounce. It’s a challenge I most definitely accept.

If you’ve never been, stop by Press Start barcade [4] in Rapid City.

Playing Pac-Man at this age seems more acceptable in public.

Country House is our family property, which is an excellent place to enjoy peaceful brews next to a campfire and creek. This will also be the future venue of my wedding in September.

Canyon Lake Park in Rapid City is where I learned to run, and now work off the soon-to-be 30-year-old belly while keeping my 10 lb. maltesepoodles in shape.

f you are involved in the hunting scene, especially in South Dakota, then you have heard of TS Customs Precision Firearms. Owner Travis Stevens knew that his passion laid in bolt action rifles and the art of making them. Located in Miller, Stevens took his love for hunting and knowledge of firearms to build one of the most respected rifle companies in the country. 605 was able to chat with Stevens about rifles, growing up in South Dakota, and his corgi, Thumper.

YOU MAKE SOME OF THE BEST ACCURATE PRECISION RIFLES IN THE BUSINESS. TELL ME WHAT THAT FEELS LIKE, BEING IN YOUR 20S AND FROM A SMALL TOWN IN SOUTH DAKOTA. TRAVIS STEVENS: I take a lot of pride in my work, as do the guys that work for me, and we’re likely more particular than most in the industry. I figured out pretty young what I wanted to do and how I wanted to proceed with that. Because of the grasp the internet has on everyone today, I’ve never felt at a disadvantage being in a small town in rural South Dakota. UPS,

FedEx, and USPS pretty well reach all corners of the nation, and it seems we’ve had rifles land in most of them.

WHO TAUGHT YOU HOW TO BUILD RIFLES? TS: Most of my rifle building technique has been selftaught with bits and pieces gleaned from peers and mentors. I also did one year of gunsmithing school, and two years of machining school after high school.

HAS HUNTING ALWAYS BEEN A PART OF YOUR LIFE? TS: Hunting has always been a big part of my life, and is likely the main reason I got into accurate rifles.

Coyote hunting with my dad is one of my first passions, and taking coyotes at further and further distances required more precise rifles.

I KNOW YOUR RIFLES HAVE BEEN CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED FOR THEIR PRECISION. HOW ACCURATE ARE THEY?

TS: It is just not very common that a properly configured rifle out of our shop doesn’t perform in the ¼ - ⅓ MOA (minute of angle) range. Our process and machinery for doing barrel work is rivaled by very, very few. I believe the heart of an accurate rifle is the barrel, barrel work, and configuration of the chamber. We’ve spent a ton of time and money, to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars, on machinery and tolling to be able to consistently cut chambers in barrels that are concentric to and centered in the bore of the barrel within millionths of an inch. That’s five places past the decimal, .00001.

DO YOU GUARANTEE A SPECIFIC MOA? TS: Every rifle that leaves our shop is built for a purpose, and our guarantee is that each rifle will fulfill its own role. Not every rifle is built to weight 12-20 pounds and shoot 1,000 yards. Sometimes a six pound rifle is put together with a low power scope for a sheep hunter to carry on his back for 10 days in the mountains. Anyone is going to have a difficult time driving that rifle to ¼ MOA accuracy group after group.

HAVE YOU BUILT ANY RIFLES FOR BIG COMPETITIONS, BIG HUNTS, OR QUALIFIERS? TS: We’ve put together a pretty solid team of competitive rifle shooters; television, social media, and internet hunting personalities; and professional instructors. We are also well represented by TV shows such as Run2Gun, featured on the Outdoor Channel, and active social media personalities, like Muley Freak and Cheyenne River Predator Hunters.

Primal Rights has also been instrumental in not only our successes, but the success of our customers through their rifle training courses and guidance on equipment selection.

WHAT DO PEOPLE USUALLY USE YOUR RIFLES FOR? TS: We have built rifles for most of the sports that involve a bolt action, centerfire rifle.

Hunting is the most popular use, followed

closely by tactical rifle competitions, and just general long range plinking and target shooting as a hobby.

WHAT DO YOUR CUSTOMERS GENERALLY HUNT FOR? TS: I don’t know if there is a big or small game animal in North America that hasn’t been on the receiving end of a TS Customs rifle. In our part of the world, deer, elk, and coyotes will be the most popular quarry.

WHERE IS THE FARTHEST ONE OF YOUR RIFLES HAVE TRAVELED? TS: Alaska and Hawaii are the farthest I can think of shipping a rifle to a customer, but I know of customers traveling well across the ocean into places such as Africa, Europe, and Asia.

IN YOUR EXPERIENCE, WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF GROWING UP IN SOUTH DAKOTA? TS: I think opportunity abounds in South

TS: Most rifles with us providing all the parts will land at $3,500-$5,000. Lead times can vary mostly on the availability of parts. Due to the custom nature of the rifles and how the individual parts can be ordered, lead times can vary from two to nine months, on average.

TS: When a customer brings in all their own parts, there is, of course, no wait time for parts, and our typical time frame for a complete rifle assembly runs around two months. Price is dictated solely by requested services and will usually be $1,000-$2,500.

WHAT ROLE DOES THUMPER PLAY IN THE SHOP? TS: Thumper spends most of his day taking naps, barking at strange noises, eating bugs, and joyfully greeting visitors.

Adventure Awaits in Southeast S.D.

PEOPLE FROM ALL OVER THE COUNTRY ARE LEARNING NEW SKILLS AND SEEING NEW SIGHTS, THANKS TO A GUIDE WHO’S COMBINING HIS PASSION AND EDUCATION IN AND OUT OF THE CLASSROOM. “With combining education and fishing, I use the two together to become who I am now,” said Erin Riibe.

Tucked into the heart of southeast South Dakota is a plethora of walleye, paddlefish and bowfishing, and waterfowl, pheasant and turkey, plus a guide who is eager to show off the area.

Erin “Chummy” Riibe doubles as a professor at Mount Marty College. Riibe, which rhymes with frisbee, grew up coming to Yankton to sail the waters and bask in the outdoors. Now, he’s taken his passion of exploring and turned it into a living.

For the past two years Riibe Outdoors has been taking groups of two to six people on guided fishing, hunting, and sightseeing trips around Yankton and even Alaska.

One of the popular tours is bowfishing, which is where a bow and arrow is used to harvest the fish.

Riibe says things book out a year in advance, but he’s also had spontaneous calls come in and, 24 hours later, he’ll be on the boat bowfishing.

“I try to accommodate everything in between,” he said. “If someone wants to book way in advance they can do that, but if they call and if I’m available the following day I try to get them out.”

Riibe is his only employee, but does have volunteers from time to time. While bookings slow down in the heat of the summer and on the coldest winter days, Riibe can have one to four trips weekly, and is usually full each weekend of pheasant season.

While Riibe is a teacher of the outdoors, his time is limited, as he’s a full-time professor.

He teaches recreation management and tourism to college students.

“One of the reasons I was inspired to begin my own business was from teaching an outdoor recreation class,” said Riibe. “I’ve been taking students on hunting and fishing trips for the past decade, and seeing them replicate the experience with their family and friends is rewarding.”

While some may be skeptical of having a guide, Riibe says it’s important, because of the knowledge and experience that comes with one.

“I provide all my own equipment, so those who are traveling don’t have to also bring their stuff along,” said Riibe. “Also people can have all the equipment in the world, but they might not know where to go or what to do, so a guide can provide equipment and experience.”

Riibe says the best part of his job is showcasing the beauty of the state.

In a world of constantly expanding vocabulary, abbreviations, and acronyms, here’s one to add to your repertoire: glamping. Glamorous camping.

Organizers say it offers the best of both worlds – providing the sounds of chirping wildlife, a night full of stars and s'mores by a campfire, without the hours spent tossing on an uncomfortable patch of ground or a cold walk to an outhouse.

Co-Founder and CEO of Under Canvas Sarah Dusek says the idea stemmed from her time on safari in Zimbabwe, and has grown to eight properties near national parks across the United States. She and her husband Jacob launched the adventure-hospitality brand in 2009.

About a mile south of downtown Keystone, an Under Canvas Inc. campus now sits in the shadow of Mount Rushmore. Forty campsites offer various amenities – tents designed to withstand tough Midwest storms house king-sized or twin beds, some have bathrooms with hot showers. For those that don’t, public bathrooms include facilities within walking distance of each site.

“So the idea sort of really sparked with ‘ah maybe we could create a small luxury style camp here in Montana’. That was the beginning of a very small idea that became something much bigger.”

There’s no wifi at the camp – meant to help visitors disconnect and enjoy their trip unbothered by everyday distractions. Electricity is limited – but solar-powered lamps provide light and an outlet to charge up your phone. Dining at the site makes meal times more convenient – with menus for breakfast and dinner, plus pack lunches available for purchase. The facility is staffed 24/7 to cater to visitors' needs – including hosting evening activities like campfires, s'mores, and games.

“I love the Black Hills, I think they’re an undiscovered gem. Obviously everybody’s heard of Mount Rushmore, but what a lot of people don’t realize is that the Black Hills are an incredible recreation area in themselves.”

Dusek says they’ve tried to make a night at Under Canvas manageable across budgets – with rates ranging from around $200-$500 a night. Reservations launched over Memorial Day weekend and are available through September 30.

They plan to reopen for the season in May 2019 with 75 campsites.

“You get to feel like you’re going on safari without necessarily leaving the country,” continued Dusek, “and having all the wonderful comforts of a luxurious tent without any of the hassle of having to put one up.”

Like a safari, the camp also encourages its guests to explore.

Under Canvas acts as a hub of information about the surrounding area with suggestions for tours, activities, and sites available. They can also take the hassle out of managing the details – offering assistance in creating a trip itinerary, and pre-set packages that include popular tours, lodging, and meals. They also play host to weddings, retreats, and other events.

Dusek says helping people better experience the beautiful spaces around them is a big part of the concept.

“One of the things we felt very passionate about when we started this business was that we wanted to be a bridge to the outdoors. So people who are maybe slightly adventurous, but aren’t necessarily big outdoors people,” said Dusek.

“Maybe they just have a little bit of adventure in their spirit,” she suggested.

“And they love the idea of having someone help them get into the outdoors in a very comfortable and easy way – then those are our people.”

Glamping, then, offers certain benefits to this group – who are the most likely to be interested in the luxury activity. Easy to find and book online – a hassle-free way to explore a new place. A campsite under Mount Rushmore on which visitors don’t even need to Google “how to pitch a tent.”

The tourism industry is taking notice. Michelle Thomson, president and CEO of the Badlands and Black Hills Tourism Association, says her region has worked to embrace the growing interest.

“The camping experience as a whole has gotten really big throughout the United States and especially in the Black Hills as well, because we do have such amazing camping experiences here.”

ACROSS THE COUNTRY, MORE AND MORE PEOPLE ARE FOLLOWING THE URGE TO PLAY OUTSIDE. According to the 2018 North American Camping Report, more than 6 million new households started camping since 2014. The study, supported by Kampgrounds of America Inc., also found the number of people who camp three or more times each year has jumped by 64 percent.

According to the Badlands and Black Hills Tourism Association, about 13.9 million people visited South Dakota last year and nearly 40 percent of that tourism spending happens in the Badlands and Black Hills region. While Mount Rushmore and other National Parks have historically been the region’s biggest draws, Thomson says opportunities for outdoor activities have been growing in popularity – and are drawing back repeat guests.

“Over recent years, outdoor recreation has become more and more important for visitors who are coming to the Black Hills – people who really want to experience

nature, and do the hiking, and biking, and rock climbing, and canoeing and all the wonderful things we have.”

Drawing a growing interest in outdoor recreation to the region fits into a larger campaign on behalf of South Dakota’s Tourism Department, which projects a busy summer for visitors. In May, the department reported that they’d seen big increases in web traffic and Vacation Guide requests - indicators, they say, that marketing efforts across the country are working.

But they’re also pushing for international interest. Thomson’s association is excited to now be able to throw glamping into the mix, which, she says, is a popular activity among world travelers.

“I think it really helps open us up even further to the world,” she says, with glamping generating growing interest among international tour operators.

“They are so excited that we have this glamping opportunity in the Black Hills with a view of Mount Rushmore, and all of these luxury experiences and the great outdoor activities that people can do while they’re here.”

t was definitely a bummer when Keller’s Green Grocery seemed to suddenly close in the former ballroom in the Carpenter Building in downtown Sioux Falls.

It was then very exciting when it was announced a deli would be taking its place. Myer’s Deli & More opened in March, and the word on the street was that it was a great place to grab a sandwich (the tagline is also “legendary sandwiches” - bold move). Then I found out they served brunch, and I was basic-white-girl-thrilled.

Sadly, while this review doesn’t include brunch (with music?!), it does include other delicious options.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Liz, 605 art director and partner in crime (yes, I bolded that title), joined me as we entered the former grocery store. To the right was the deli counter, with Boar’s Head meat and cheeses, baked goods (like cannolis), and to the side it appeared to have a salad bar.

We took a seat and were greeted by executive chef Roger Titze. He got us Diet Cokes (we were tempted to ask for a beer), and we looked over the menu.

The offerings were nice, light options for a quality, quick stop. Myers’ menu has a variety of sandwiches, hot dogs and brats, salads, and wraps. Sides are $2 each, and include potato salad, coleslaw, macaroni salad, hummus with vegetables, fresh fruit, and kettle chips.

Soon The Architect came out. Inside the marble rye was NY-style pastrami topped with shaved onion, house-made spicy pickles, and homemade mustard.

“Oh, wow,” I reacted. It was huge.

We wondered why it was called “The Architect.” ”Why? Because it’s the size of a building,” said Liz. There was meat on meat on meat. I actually voiced my concern that I hoped they didn’t lose money on it with Boar’s Head, all of the ingredients, and it was only $12. Then I realized I got to eat it and didn’t care anymore.

I’d be lying if I didn’t say we widened our mouths aggressively as we ate. It was

As I have a small mouth (legit, the dentist needs to use a tool to open it and keep it open), we decided to cave in and cut it up to finish consuming.

Our side was kettle chips, which I always have to reprimand myself before I snarf them down before I even touch the main course.

They were your standard kettle chips, which means I ate them all.

Next up was The T&J. This beauty had Genoa salami, hard salami, ham, and provolone cheese topped with ice onion, banana peppers, and oregano, finished with mayonnaise.

The shining star was the Rosemary Focaccia bread, which they told me you can also purchase at the marketplace. That’s dangerous. And I like danger.

(Again, basic-white-girlexcited.)

The strangest part? I decided at a young age that I hated salami. Never ate it in my life. Why? Because I didn’t like how it smelled or looked.

Well, this is a food review, so I took a bite.

“This is what salami tastes like?” I asked Liz. “Yeah, what is wrong with you?” she responded (and I don’t blame her).

I like salami!

Again, there was all the meat, and it was only $9. I was so nervous about the price point. Until I took another bite and forgot.

We took a digestion stretch before the Sriracha Chicken Bacon Ranch Wrap arrived. The blackened chicken was tossed with bacon bits, tomato, ice onion, and Pepper Jack cheese, and was finished with Sriracha ranch.

I finally did, and it does take five to 10 seconds to feel the spice. Since I have an overbite (and as I continue to over-share), it’s hard for me to eat wraps. The knife and fork saved me, and I ate it like a salad. It was a great salad. Liz said it was a great wrap.

Liz took the first bite, as I was still in digestion stretch mode, and I slowly watched her eyes widen and her react.

Lastly was an item that appeared that we couldn’t find on the menu. Atop a pita was a pile of fresh ingredients, including sprouts and the house-made pickles. With nothing to reference, we stared, and Liz started digging in… kind of.

“Whoa, that sneaks up on you,” she said as she started blowing on her hand.

“It had great texture,” she said, as she started to touch her lips from the heat.

I was hesitant to take a bite.

“I’m not sure how I’m supposed to eat this,” she said.

Using a fork, she found cheese, hickory smoked bacon, and a lot of “fun flavors.”

“I don’t know what this is, but I’d get it again,” she said aloud.

Owner Dan Myers happened to walk by as she stated this, and he said, “That’s one of our specials, The Porker.”

BOTTOM LINE: I’m very excited about the new option in downtown Sioux Falls for deli, baked goods, grab-and-go, and more.

I’m anxious to try their salads, and also am planning my first brunch outing (fresh pancakes with espresso syrup?!). This is a talented team, and with constant unique specials, it will stay exciting.

LIFESTYLE “I’ll have a muffin… No. WAIT. Just a water. I’m not hungry, after all... No. WAIT. I’ll take their coffee cake… No. Scratch that. I’ll have a coffee cake and a coffee… Hello?! Are you still there?”

Long pause.

“Jon? Are you still there?”

the coffee with a rather timid look on his face. It’s almost as if he’s thinking “Uh-oh, how is she going to react to this.” I brush off the thought of him thinking that and take the bag and greedily dive in. As I’m partaking in the beautiful snack, I stop, morsel in hand and look back and study his face.

“I’m here,” my husband said cautiously. “You want a coffee cake and a coffee?

Final choice... are you entirely sure?”

Suddenly, I shamefully realize, that look on his face? I didn’t mistake that look. That look of fear is real.

“Yes,” I say emphatically.

“I’m sure. Thank you.”

Whatever could be making him - and probably my children - afraid of me?

Me? I’m practically the definition of mellow!

Patient to a fault, right?

Slow to anger, gosh darnit!

Yes, how could they be afraid of all of that?

I hang up. Then, I quickly call him right back.

“Hello?” he asks, calmly.

“I’ll take a muffin instead.

Final choice, for sure this time. Also, did you water all our flower pots this morning?”

“Tracy,” he said quietly. “Let me order this for you and then we can talk about your flower pots.”

“Oh, right. You’re right.

Okay, thanks.”

I hang up and wait for him to return. He ran into my favorite coffee shop to grab me a drink and snack while I eagerly awaited his return in the car with our children. At the time of this happening, I’m about nine months pregnant and it is 91 degrees out with, I don’t know, in the neighborhood of about 1000 percent humidity (just an approximation).

In fact, as I reflect upon the insane projects I’ve come up with, I think my husband would truly attest that it has become like the American Ninja Warrior version of nesting around here. And somehow, he still, albeit fearfully, loves me?

As the preponderance of the evidence goes to show, it is, quite literally, as if I have lost my dang mind. Could I be the only pregnant woman on the prairie who is acting this way?

I’m hoping, however, that all of this is just temporary.

At the time of this writing, I’m so close to the finish line of meeting our newest family member I can almost feel that sweet baby in my arms. In the meantime, I will just have to issue a few more - hundred? apologies to make up for my questionable behavior, especially during this ninth month.

Then, of course, once the baby arrives I will enter into a whole new kind of crazy called sleep deprivation, at which point…

THE BLACK HILLS ARE ONE OF THE OLDEST MOUNTAIN RANGES IN NORTH AMERICA.

The rich history, never-ending miles of trails to hike, the Crazy Horse and Mount Rushmore memorials, and wildlife are just some of the alluring attractions that make it one of South Dakota’s most popular tourist destinations throughout the year.

The world-renowned Custer State Park is comprised of 71,000 acres, making it one of the nation’s largest state parks. Of course, driving the scenic byways or hiking through the Ponderosa Pines are just some ways to view the state’s natural beauty, but imagine getting to see the area from a different perspective.

Black Hills Balloons provides hot air balloon tours over the southern hills of Custer Valley. Locals and Black Hills visitors are offered daily flights in the Custer area and local events. This tour experience all happens in the largest, most modern balloons in the five-state area.

Damien Mahony, Keely Wade, and Steve Bauer make up the team of pilots who have a combined 30+ years of ballooning and touring experience.

The company was founded by Steve Bauer in 1984, and quickly became one of the most well-established attractions in the Hills. His commitment to the area

and the local tourism allowed Black Hills Balloons to thrive for many years.

In 2015, Keely and Damien quit their day jobs in Florida, and jumped at the chance to take over the reins and move to the Custer area. Running the long-admired Black Hills Balloons was their ticket to the simpler, more adventurous life they longed for.

For most, flying in a hot air balloon is a once-in-alifetime, bucket-list adventure.

However, flying through the Black Hills of South Dakota is more than that.

Touring the area in a hot air balloon allows guests to view completely untouched parts of the hills, without anyone knowing you were there. Sometimes balloons can be just inches from the treetops, without noise or making any movement.

THE BLACK HILLS BALLOON BASICS All hot air balloons and pilots

are certified through the Federal Aviation Administration. Just like any other aircraft, there are strict guidelines and inspections regularly.

Safety is always the highest

priority, and if the pilot feels as though the weather isn’t suitable for flight, rescheduling or refunding will be arranged accordingly.

The balloons vary in size from

four to 12 passengers, giving the ability to host large groups for birthdays and other special occasions.

Each flight begins at sunrise at a central meeting location in Custer.

The balloon takes 20 minutes to prepare for flight, and once ready, the pilot and passengers begin their one-hour journey. The length of the flight is determined by weather and available landing locations.

Because hot air balloons literally go with the wind, no two flights are ever the same. Launch and landing locations vary daily, because pilots fly at various altitudes to navigate to a landing location.

The mountains, valleys, lakes, and prairies of the Black Hills are home to elk, antelope, whitetail and mule deer, and buffalo. Sometimes passengers even see mountain lions from the secure gondolas.

It’s rarely known, but South Dakota is the home of the modern hot air balloon. The balloon system used worldwide was created in Sioux Falls

by Raven Industries. South Dakota is also the home to the Stratobowl, which is a historic site for balloon aviation and space exploration.

Custer himself was known to fly in a hot air balloon every now and again to warn of enemy movement. The state is literally full of hot air history.

arrett Dahl and his brother Jordan, who have locations in Deadwood and Hill City, love art. Their art doesn’t involve a paintbrush or clay, though.

And if used incorrectly, it could be deadly. What is it?

Chainsaws.

Owner and chainsaw artist at Dahl’s Chainsaw Art, it’s hard to miss Jarrett and his team, as the sculpture garden is on the side of the road in Keystone with booming wooden sculptures, including a giant wooden yeti. Passerby can experience the award-winning 25-foot sculptures and see some made with daily live demos. 605 chatted with Jarrett about what inspires him, how long his craft takes, and what he would be doing if he wasn’t creating custom pieces in the Black Hills.

I GOT MY FIRST CHAINSAW… when I was 18 years old.

I FIRST GOT INTO ART WHEN… a fishing trip up to Alaska turned into my lifelong career of chainsaw art through a friend in the family.

YOU MAY HAVE SEEN MY WORK… at Cabela’s stores around the Midwest, art galleries located around the town of Aspen, through features in a few movies, TV shows, and magazines around the world. I've also had the opportunity to perform live carving shows in the Minnesota State Fair, and competed in multiple carving competitions across the country. One of my sculptures, a large eagle motorcycle, is featured at the Ripley's Believe It or Not! museum in Baltimore, Md.

MY FAVORITE THING TO CREATE OUT OF WOOD IS... eagles in many different poses, such as eagles in flight.

THE BEST WOOD TO WORK WITH IS… when focusing on production work, Ponderosa Pine is preferred. However, when focusing on more intricate work, Maple, Elm, and Black Walnut Wood are preferred.

THE ONE THING I HAVEN’T MADE THAT I WANT TO IS... focusing on sculpting of human figure, because it is much more challenging. Also, I would like to focus on some safari wildlife.

THE BEST PART OF LIVING IN THE BLACK HILLS IS… the privilege of driving into work every day with the beautiful scenery. Also, the weather out here is great carving weather year

round, which makes it easier to carve.

Living in the Black Hills also provides me with the unlimited access of wood to carve with.

MY GO-TO FOR FOOD IN SOUTH DAKOTA IS… the Powder House and the Grizzly Creek restaurant located here in Keystone. These are restaurants I love treating my employees to after a hard day's work.

WHAT I LOVE ABOUT MEETING VISITORS FROM OUTSIDE OF THE STATE IS… meeting tourists from all over the world, and to hear their own experiences with wood carving they have done themselves.

involved, and it is a lot less forgiving since you're taking away from the sculptures rather than adding more.

WORKING OUTSIDE IS GREAT BECAUSE… the fresh air, and my office has a 360-view of the beautiful Black Hills.

WORKING OUTSIDE IS CRAZY BECAUSE… the unpredictable weather Keystone has. One minute it can be very sunny and clear skies, and the next minute, it could be hailing with 50 mph wind.

THE MOST ‘OUT-THERE’ THING I’VE EVER CARVED IS… portrait sculptures of [J.C.] “Pappy” and Pearl Hoel, the original founders of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, which is located in a large stump in Sturgis.

MY BROTHER AND I DO THIS BECAUSE… the art of creating a wood sculpture with a chainsaw in such a short amount of time is thrilling and exciting. It was a privilege to be able to pass this form of art down to my brother, as well. It is also very heartwarming to see the smiles on people's faces when they get to take home a sculpture from the Black Hills as a souvenir.

THE LONGEST I’VE EVER WORKED ON

A PIECE IS… a 25-foot tall warrior that took me 21 days.

A PIECE TYPICALLY TAKES ME... anywhere from 30 minutes to a couple of hours, but it all depends on the piece I am working on.

IF I WASN’T CARVING WOOD, I WOULD BE… building homes.

I GET MY INSPIRATION FROM… being able to bring life back into a lifeless stump.

WHEN I'M NOT WORKING ON SCULPTURES, I’M… playing sports and enjoying spending time with my family.

MY FAVORITE OUTDOOR ACTIVITY IN SOUTH DAKOTA IS… hiking and enjoying the many views that the Black Hills has to offer.

ONE THING MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT CHAINSAW ART IS… sometimes the smaller-scale sculptures can be more difficult than some of the largerscale sculptures, because a chainsaw is a very large and aggressive tool to use when removing wood.
