MONICA ALBERS RASDak A Chicagoland native, Monica is a graduate of Valparaiso University, and is a news producer in Sioux Falls. Her favorite things include hiking trips, plane tickets, new cozy sweaters, and large cups of coffee.

ANDREA CONOVER 21st Festivals of Cultures A Minneapolis native, Andrea is a recent graduate of Augustana University with a triple major in journalism, English and German. When she isn't busy writing, she enjoys reading, travel, photography and daydreaming about the day when she'll finally own a corgi.

KAYLYN DEITER Music to Sweat To Kaylyn is a senior journalism and English major at Augustana University. When she’s not writing and editing, this Aberdeen native likes to adventure around Sioux Falls with friends, read, attempt to cook, and spend time with her family and dog, Cavvie.

Saturday, June 3

THOMAS HENTGES Field Notes & Fixations Thomas is a Sioux Falls–based singer/songwriter, longtime scene staple, floor manager at Prairie Berry East Bank, and an obsessive music collector. He enjoys spinning his large collection of vinyl albums, drinking craft beer and tequila, spending time with his wife, family and friends, and keeping tabs on all his beloved sports teams.

TRACY KIRBY Little Parent on the Prairie Tracy is a transplant to South Dakota via Colorado, California, and (oddly enough) Nebraska. She is married to a Sioux Falls native, and is a mother to two "spirited" children and one giant bear-dog. She recently moved to the country, where she is hyperventilating in a brown bag in regard to all the ticks and bugs.

KELLY NELSON Wild Bill Days Kelly, a 2016 graduate of Augustana University, is a product of the English, communications, and Religion departments. She is a lover of breweries, traveling, music, and is an eternal student of the world.

“It’s a speed game, sort of like drag racing for shooters. They’re all lined up with their .45 revolvers, in front of a super-sensitive target connected to a light system that counts down. When it goes off, everybody draws and shoots. They have to hit the target for anything to count. So not only are they whipping the gun out of their holster, they have to be accurate, too. They have to hit the target for it to register the time,” said Kille. “Currently, the world record holder for men and women is less than half a second between the thing telling you it’s time to draw and them hitting the target with the wax bullet.” The events mentioned are just a few out of dozens happening throughout the day. To check out the full schedule, visit deadwood.com. The celebration of Wild Bill Days is a nod to the memory of Wild Bill’s Wild West, but it also celebrates Deadwood’s history and the roots of South Dakota’s culture. “We’re a town that’s focused on history, but on the other hand, we’re a town that’s been fostering the progression of South Dakota since 1876. It was a lawless time, but it was also on the forefront of development over the years, as it was the first place in South Dakota to get electricity,” said Kille.

WILD BILL DAYS A CELEBRATION OF HISTORY

IN 1876, THE TOWN OF DEADWOOD WAS RIDDLED WITH GUNSLINGERS AND GAMBLERS: MEN IN SEARCH OF THEIR FORTUNE IN GOLD. JAMES BUTLER HICKOK WAS NO DIFFERENT. BUILDING HIS REPUTATION THROUGHOUT THE WILD WEST AS “WILD BILL,” HICKOK’S LIFE WAS SHORT, BUT EXPLOSIVE.

BY KELLY NELSON

Wild Bill’s last day was a typical day at the saloon, gambling in hopes of winning a bit of gold. Bursting in through revolving doors was Jack McCall, dust flying, pistol in hand, aimed to kill. Wild Bill, his back to the door, didn’t ever see who his killer was. Wild Bill fell forward, his hand exposed. That hand became known as “Dead Man’s Hand” in poker ever since, carrying on Wild Bill’s spirit with the hand of two Aces and two Eights.

1 6 \\\\\\\\\ J U N E

The city of Deadwood commemorates the man who, with his death, coined the term “Dead Man’s Hand” in their annual summer festival: Wild Bill Days. June 16 and 17, Deadwood will be the destination for thousands of people across the Midwest. Over the span of two full days, Wild Bill Days will host a completely free-of-charge festival with events going on all day to cater toward the interests of a wide variety of ages. Events such as the DockDog competition — which is the spirited pursuit to find the top retriever dog in town — is a family favorite. Each furry family member competes in a race to retrieve a prize and bring it back to their owners. Down the street, you can find the Northern Hills Prospectors in the street giving free lessons on gold panning and sluicing for potential riches in gold. Amanda Kille, the marketing and sponsorship director of the Deadwood Chamber of Commerce, anticipates this year will be the biggest turnout with concert headliners The Oak Ridge Boys and Sawyer Brown (The Oak Ridge Boys performing Friday, June 16, Sawyer Brown taking the stage Saturday, June 17). Another highly anticipated event is the return of the National Championships for the Cowboy Fastdraw. For those unfamiliar with the Cowboy Fastdraw, Kille describes the event as being reminiscent of a Wild West gunfight.

Bear witness to one of South Dakota’s National Historic Landmarks and discover the wild spirit of Wild Bill that still lives. “We consistently deliver on that good time with our events. That’s why they keep growing,” noted Kille. “It’s because people keep coming back. Once we get somebody to come once, they realize how special it is, and they come back and bring friends.”

njoy the sights, sounds, and tastes from around the world June 17 from 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. at The Coliseum in downtown Sioux Falls. The Festival of Cultures celebrates its 21st year, and 605 sat down with executive director of the Multicultural Center of Sioux Falls, Christy Nicolaisen, to talk about the family-friendly festival’s highlights, and why diversity is essential to the community. WHAT'S NEW AT THE FESTIVAL THIS YEAR? CHRISTY NICOLAISEN: This year we’re moving it to The Coliseum. We’re trying to highlight that it’s this really cool building — it’s 100 years old. The other thing we’re trying to address is that last year, it was incredibly hot, and in Falls Park, there was no place to go. We’ve also had years where it’s rained us out, so we’re trying to be more conscious of the weather. WHY IS THIS EVENT IMPORTANT FOR THE AREA? CN: Sioux Falls is growing at such a rapid rate, and diversity here is a very beautiful thing. Part of our mission is to have everyone respect and honor each other. We live together, work together, and play together, and if we can understand each other, that helps grow the city, county, and the state, because we live in such a small world now. It’s really important that you build those relationships. The more you know about the people you do business with, the better your business will be. HOW DOES THE FESTIVAL CELEBRATE DIFFERENT CULTURES? CN: It’s a comfortable atmosphere where you can enjoy yourself and learn. We have a wide variety of local food and entertainment available from Native American to Bosnian to Kunama. We have 145 languages represented, including several Native American languages. Sioux Falls should be very proud of itself and the diversity it represents. There will be display booths where people are

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS THIS YEAR? CN: You can’t miss the entertainment. Brulé will be performing in the afternoon, as well as other talent from local ethnic communities, so ideally you should be here for the entire day. The ability to look at The Coliseum is another highlight. There have been a lot of efforts to keep it preserved. We’ve still got the original woodwork and the original stage. I’d just like to make a formal and respectful invitation that people come down, check out the [building], and check out the events. It’s completely a family event, and it’ll be a really good day. FIELD NOTES & FIXATIONS BY THOMAS HENTGES

JUNE TWENTY SEVENTEEN

FIELD NOTES & FIXATIONS: POOLSIDE PLAYLIST

O EARTH GROANS SIOUX FALLSBASED ROAD DOGS, EARTH GROANS, HAVE REAPED WHAT THEY'VE SEWN WITH THEIR RECENT SIGNING TO SOLID STATE RECORDS. Earth Groans began as a solo project for frontman Jeremy Schaeffer, but over the past couple of years, it has slowly evolved into its current lineup, including Zach Mayfield on guitar, Brady Mueller on drums, and, most recently, Kaden Burton on bass. I recently had a chance to ask Jeremy a few questions during this exciting juncture for the hardcore/metal band, which recently released their album Renovate. THOMAS HENTGES: Was there a certain point where the band seemingly turned a corner, and you collectively felt you were on to something special?

JEREMY SCHAEFFER: When we found Kaden. The very first time we played with him was the tightest we ever sounded. It was about that time that we really started gaining a following, as well. People were beginning to come to shows to see specifically us. TH: Outside of music, where else do you draw inspiration? JS: God's creation. Seeing passionate people with a calling following their dreams. When people are selfless, humble, and willing to help and serve those around them. TH: Being a Christian band, do you feel Earth Groans has evangelical aspirations? JS: We aren't a preachy band by any means, but we do genuinely use music as vessel to minister. Every one of our songs is written from the standpoint of wanting to turn people towards God.

CHECK OUT ON SPOTIFY JS: I sent them a press packet on a complete whim. I spent weeks building a custom box. It was handmade from wood lathe, and contained our album, along with a number of items compiled together to be our physical press package. It turned out they already had their eye on us, so it was perfect timing. The day they received the package, they emailed me to arrange a phone call. TH: You guys have built a reputation of being '"road dogs." With your recent signing, do you see yourselves being on the road even more? JS: Absolutely! Signing to Solid State is like the first big firework on the 4th of July. It's big, unexpected, and satisfying, but it's only going to get bigger and better from here on. We plan on touring as much as we humanly can without losing our jobs or our homes. FOR MORE INFORMATION, VISIT EARTHGROANS.COM.

TH: How did the relationship with Solid State Records begin?

"WE HAVE TWO EMPLOYEES, FIVE FREQUENT BLOGGERS, SEVEN BOARD MEMBERS, AND OVER 20 RETAIL VOLUNTEERS AND INTERNS THAT HELP SUPPORT AND FURTHER OUR MISSION."

MEET THE Artist JESS MILLER JOHNSON ARTIST, PRESIDENT, AND CO-FOUNDER OF JAM ART & SUPPLIES, JESS MILLER JOHNSON, IS PASSIONATE ABOUT CULTURE AND HER COMMUNITY. OH, AND DANCING TO GREAT MUSIC. I LIVE IN ... My husband Alex and I recently bought a duplex in Pettigrew Heights in Sioux Falls. Being first-time home buyers has been exhilarating. Living centrally in town allows me to be less than five minutes from all of my jobs. WHEN I SAY "I AM ART," I MEAN ... We are the rulers of our own destiny. When I say I am art, I am saying that I am constantly creating; I’m even creating my destiny. Besides selling my art, art supplies, and JAM’s mission, I live an artful life, because I value the benefits of aesthetics. Aesthetic appreciation creates a connection between physical and mental feng shui. MY STYLE(S) OF ART IS ... post-expressionistic, sometimes surreal, sometimes abstract, always symbolic, feminist art. MY MOTTO IS ... Life is too short for one radio station. ONE HABIT I HAVE IS ... I never return library books on time. MY FAVORITE THING TO DO IS ... to find envelopepushing music videos that make me dance.

2 0 \\\\\\\\\ J U N E

I'M CURRENTLY READING ... The Grace of Great Things: Creativity and Innovation by Robert Grudin. Honestly, this is a life changing book, and I cannot say enough good things about it. I want to get a grant to buy a bunch of copies, then pass them out on the street corners. I KNEW I WANTED TO START JAM ART + SUPPLIES BECAUSE ... I have an amazing support group. My maternity leave gave me the freedom to not work. While I was not working, and in between our newborn's frequent naps, I was able to articulate my concept of a Creative Reuse Center that included a vision for Sioux Falls artists. I felt that there were and are a lot of people with art needs; some of them are Sioux Falls artists, crafters, children, and people who live in low income situations. I knew I wanted to start it, because it allowed me to serve my favorite demographic and my favorite products. I was creating something bigger than myself, and my support group has been here all along getting bigger than I ever imagined. JAMARTANDSUPPLIES.COM IS A PLACE FOR ... Sioux Falls newcomers and art nerds, potential donors, and customers! PEOPLE CAN GET INVOLVED WITH JAM BY ... donating time, money, or supplies! Visit our website, get on our email list, pay attention, and show up! I understand that showing up is hard to do, but the more you do it, the more comfortable you’ll get at showing up. JAM can be a relaxing place for many.

ANOTHER PROJECT I'M EXCITED FOR ... are the commissions I’ve been getting. In the past, I have taken very few commissions, because the idea of doing a painting for someone else daunted me. I was worried they wouldn’t like my style, and I wasn’t sure of my abilities. I still worry my customers won’t like my style and concept, but I’m way more confident in my abilities. I’m taking commissions for goddess paintings; I’d love to paint your inner goddess. IF I WEREN'T DOING THIS ... I’d be unsatisfied. I love engaging with the world while seeking to change it. I’m a strategist, entrepreneur, and artist. I will create more businesses in the future; I just started with a non-profit art supply store because I love art supplies, and I think culture is very important. Individuals and communities can use art and culture to heal. Being an artist allows me to create the life and vision I have. We all have a say in what our culture is; we just need people to start realizing that if they have a vision, they are capable of, and perhaps, responsible for, making it happen. VISIT THE JAM ART + SUPPLIES ART TENT AT THE 605 SUMMER CLASSIC JUNE 23 AND 24 IN THE CHERAPA PLACE PARKING LOT IN SIOUX FALLS. FOR MORE INFORMATION, VISIT JESSMILLERJOHNSON.COM.

I've always been a fan of Corey Gerlach's roasts, and I could definitely tell the difference when he started roasting for himself with [2] The Breaks Coffee Roasting Co. Also, sharing a building with him makes my coffee addiction very real. The thing I like about working with Brogan Costa at [3] Green Dream Screen Printing is that he will give you his opinion. This is great, because I believe in the great work that he does, and he is a great collaborator. You can find the shirts we printed this day at our June 17 gig (see end of article). Believe it or not, every food item M.B. Haskett has pairs well with an Old Style in a can. And don't forget to drink the coffee, as well... There are only so many parks in town that you can drink at, so do your research and get your crew together. Ours is [4] Menlo Park. Game of choice = soccer tennis.

I always try to time my drinking with the schedule of the train to score those half-price beers at [5] Fernson Brewing Company on 8th Street.

The best part about living in the Midwest is having a [6] bon fire. You can literally burn anything here. My version of a Midwest martini is a pickle beer at TommyJack's Pub. You can go all out with tomato juice, pickles, and olives. But let's be honest, the pickle is the all-star here. In late night food do we trust. It is impossible for me to be out late in downtown Sioux Falls and not talk about getting a burrito smothered in hot sauce at Gilberto's Mexican Taco Shop. It's the best place to encounter a variety of likeminded individuals with the same idea.

I

n celebration of our summer festival issue, we visited Americana musician Ryan Kickland in his west Rapid City home. The avid collector gave us a tour of his ranch home that he shares with wife, Mel, and his children Alia, 19, and Syd, 17.

AT HOME RYAN + MEL KICKLAND

O FURNITURE AS ART

“IT’S AN HEIRLOOM IN MY WIFE’S FAMILY, AND THEY KEEP HANDING IT AROUND,” SAID RYAN OF A PIECE FROM PRINGLE, S.D. “IT’S AN OLD POSTAL SERVICE P.O. BOX MAILBOX.” THE KICKLANDS HAVE A LOT OF NATURAL LIGHT FROM WINDOWS ON THE MAIN FLOOR, WHICH IS PERFECT FOR THEIR PLETHORA OF PLANTS.

O ARBOR ADORATION The more we walked around for our tour, we started noticing trees and asked Ryan about it. He smiled and shrugged his shoulders, “Eh, we like trees.” As they went from store to store, they started gravitating towards pieces and artwork that included trees.

2 4 \\\\\\\\\ J U N E

“I like furniture that serves as art,” said Ryan. This includes vintage stereos and record players that are sprinkled all over the home. One of his favorite pieces is a stand built specifically for 78 players, which he says are hard to find. Another conversation piece is their vintage media stand, which has a built-in fireplace. The couple’s go-to style is Midcentury, which they typically find at secondhand stores when they travel for unique artwork and décor. When asked where the lamps in the sunroom were from, Ryan laughed and answered, “From this store called Target, have you heard of it? We’ve been into Midcentury for years now, and it’s been catching on recently, and current stores are starting to replicate pieces. They’re doing a good job with it.”

HOME + LIVING

O THE RECORD LOUNGE It’s incredible when you walk into the basement and see “The Record Lounge.” The shelves, which have vinyl records in order alphabetically and by genre, are only a glimpse into how many he has. “I’ve got another closet full,” he said. Ryan has around 7,000 hard-tofind vintage records, including 45 RPM vinyl records that he swaps out in frames above the shelves. Amongst the collection are The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, and more. Ryan pointed out a rare Beatles album, Yesterday and Today, which had the “inoffensive” cover pasted and coming apart over-top the infamous and controversial “butcher” cover. Some of the most hard-to-find vinyl, though, are from the ‘90s, says Ryan. “That’s really hard to find, because original pressings of anything in the ‘90s – Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam – they weren’t really pressing vinyl in the ‘90s, so they did very limited runs since everyone was listening to CDs.”

MEL ALSO COLLECTS VINTAGE CAMERAS.

“I’M AT THE POINT THAT I’M AFTER SUCH RARE STUFF, THAT I KNOW WHAT I’M HUNTING FOR,” HE SAID OF HIS VINYL COLLECTION.

Ryan uses Microsoft Excel sheet to keep his entire inventory organized.

HOME + LIVING

RYAN HAS A SHELF OF RANDOM ITEMS, INCLUDING THE FIRST RUN OF A HEMAN ACTION FIGURE HIS GRANDMOTHER GAVE HIM.

O THE STUDIO One of the biggest draws to the four-bedroom, two-bathroom home was the room they had for their home studios. Mel is a metalsmith, and owns Earthen Creations and MoonLit Creations. Kickland has a full time job, and also creates music in his home studio for television shows and films. “I do all sorts of different music, so it’s nice to do licensing, so I can make whatever I want,” he said. Guitars are displayed on the walls throughout the studio and basement. “I’m always getting guitars; I’ve got a problem,” he laughed, guesstimating he has around 20 in total. “It’s just me [in the studio], so I try to create [music] in a small space where I can control the sound and the ambiance.”

O ROCK HUNTERS The Kicklands enjoy collecting rocks from various places they visit. “We’re rock hounds, so you’ll see rocks all around,” said Ryan. Whether they’re found in stores on road trips, or through rock hunting, rocks can be found on shelves and other areas of the home. The couple have lived in places like Oregon, Washington, Colorado, and Tennessee, and have brought rocks back with them from all of those locations when they moved back to South Dakota seven years ago. Ryan says Mel will clean the rocks occasionally to keep them looking up to par.

O LAMP FANATICS Ryan has developed a love for lamps over the years, and the more ornate and quirky, the better. “Old lamps, I can’t resist. I like items that date back to the late ‘50s/early ‘60s where they tried to make them look futuristic before they knew what the future was going to look like … I love that.” One gift from his mother-in-law last Christmas mixed two collections, with a vintage lamp that has a tree design as the base.

O ORGANIZATION TIPS With all of their extensive collections, and with such an eclectic variety of décor, it could seem overwhelming to keep everything organized and not cluttered. “It takes lot of deliberation. We tweak and tweak and tweak,” said Ryan. “And we’ve always done that; my wife and I have been together since we were teenagers. We like the same stuff and help each other out.”

“WE HAVE A WHOLE LIST OF THINGS WE WANT TO DO,” SAID RYAN OF THEIR ‘50S HOME THAT WAS RENOVATED AND HAD ADDITIONS (LIKE THE SUNROOM) IN THE ‘90S. “WE’RE GOING TO GET TO DO THE NEXT PHASE OF KNOCKING STUFF DOWN.”

O KICKLAND RELEASED HIS NEW ALBUM, SPECIAL MAGIC, IN MAY THAT IS AVAILABLE AS A CD OR FOR DOWNLOAD. FOR MORE INFORMATION ON KICKLAND’S MUSIC, VISIT KICKLAND.COM. •

COME VISIT: Canton ONLY 20 MILES SOUTH OF SIOUX FALLS IS THE LINCOLN COUNTY TOWN THAT IS SURROUNDED BY NEWTON HILLS STATE PARK, THE BIG SIOUX RIVER, AND THE “ROLLING HILLS OF THE SIOUX VALLEY.” WHETHER IT’S A DAY TRIP OR A WEEKEND GETAWAY, HERE ARE SOME PLACES TO CHECK OUT.

FOR COFFEE OR LUNCH O LAURA’S LATTES This delicious coffee shop was created with a larger purpose – to make all feel welcome and to be an example to others with disabilities that "anyone can rise above expectations that many in this world would have for them." Owner/partner Karla Lems launched the business with daughter Laura in mind, who happens to have Down's Syndrome. Laura and her family can typically be seen working there with a smile. Laura's Lattes a great spot for grabbing coffee, having a meeting, or ordering a treat or lunch. Some highlights they offer are shipping in Black Hills Bagels, ice cream, ice cream drinks, and other desserts, like cheesecake and donut holes. There for lunchtime? Try a wrap or their lasagna. Lems says they are excited for outdoor seating this spring/ summer. (605) 987-4420

FOR SHOPPING O RARE NECESSITIES ANTIQUES

FOR DINNER O BLACK ANGUS STEAKHOUSE

Owned by Larry Atwood, this is one of the last – if not the last – antique stores in Canton. After losing a store to a fire and others closing down, this two-level consignment store still stands strong as a great stop for antique and vintage items throughout the 8,000-square-foot space. You could spend an entire afternoon digging throughout each setup, discovering jewelry, glassware, furniture, clothing, décor, and more. (605) 987-0041

Considering he has 27 years of experience at the restaurant, you’re in good hands with owner Sanya Dethleusay, who purchased the company from the previous owner seven years ago. The family-friendly business is open for lunch and dinner, and offers items like burgers, wings, fried appetizers, a variety of steaks, chicken options, sandwiches, a children’s menu, and seafood (including walleye, torsk, cod fillet, king crab legs, tilapia, and more). Dethleusay recommends the spring rolls, chislic, and their “Black Angus” Prime Rib on Fridays and Saturdays. Other highlights include their large selection of wine, liquor, and beer, and their “famous” homemade ranch and bacon salt (which they put on the rim of their Bloody Mary). (605) 987-9000

FOR A BEER OR BAR FOOD O ON THE ROCKS Looking to belly-up to the bar and watch a game or catch up with friends? On the Rocks is a place to stop by for pool, darts, bands, karaoke, or for complimentary popcorn. There are plenty of things to talk about with the $1 Mystery Shot, Pete the monkey (we would say more, but we’ll let you see him for yourself), and the “Bad Check Wall” (which literally displays the names of people who have written bad checks to the business on the wall). Hungry? Try items like their quesadilla, burgers, sandwiches, wraps, wings, or pizza. Or, if you feel like snacking, order the Belt Buster Basket, which includes cheese balls, onion rings, pickle chips, and jalapeño poppers. On the go? They also have a mini liquor store. uring Mod Sun's recent 25-city "Drive In Movie Tour," he experimented with video to document his fans at each stop. Sending out someone from his team with a camera, they captured lines of young fans exclaiming heartfelt sentiments like, "You've changed my life for the last four years, thank you," and, "You helped me get through a really rough time when my friend committed suicide; I love you so much." After touring for almost 15 years, Minnesota-native Mod Sun says he hasn't ever experienced his fans this way, and is grateful he decided to remove himself from the filming equation for the results.

"It was so special to me. I never really looked at the support that I have and as thoroughly as I did on this tour," he said. "It's one thing for fans to walk up to me and say I've really helped them out and it's great to meet me, all in 60 seconds. With this, leaving a message for me was a way I could take it better, because getting compliments to

your face is really difficult for me. Seeing it from the outside in, I could really take away from that." Mod Sun's positive energy seemed to transport through the phone when 605 chatted with the hip hop artist and writer (and painter, and poet ... we'll get to that) on a Friday evening. Rather than "fans," he referred to them as "friends," and genuinely spoke with affection when referencing them. "I'm really invested in these people that are supporting me. I love them," he said. "That's why I call all these people my friends instead of fans, because the people that listen to me I really connect with and would want to hang out with, and those are the people I'm searching for." The idea for the videos came about to coincide with Mod Sun's newest 11-track album, Movie, which also has a short

Mod Sun mentioned really following the law of attraction, which is the philosophy that focusing on positive or negative thoughts will bring positive or negative experiences into someone's life.

"The whole idea of Movie and everything like that is I personally look at my life in a way that I want to make it interesting all of the time; I want "I'm in the mantra that whatever to feel as if I'm being witnessed," you're thinking, you're asking for he said. "I never really know where it," he said. "If you get a parking to put that topic as far as that's ticket, for example, and you say, 'I faith, religion, or if it's a fact that never want another parking ticket we're entertainment for whatever is again,' unfortunately you just asked going on above us. Even if I'm alone, to get another one, because the I'm dancing, I'm singing, I'm on my universe is unbiased, and it doesn't typewriter. "What's the point of sitting down and feeling bad for yourself?" he asked. "We're getting fed that negative energy all the time. It's always been that way. Like, turn on the news ... there's never any good news. The world we live in

wants to feed you bad news and set in fear. That does nothing for you. Every day you wake up should be amazing and be a blessing." Living life to the fullest, Mod Sun mentioned he has already completed two full bucket lists, including making a song with musician Travis Barker (check) and buying a car from Travis Barker (check - a Cadillac). Meet Bob Dylan? Check. One of the latest bucket list items to check off was to bring vulnerability into his next album. For the first time, he had a serious girlfriend when

the process of Movie began. "With [this album] I'm touching grounds that I've never touched before, which is talking about relationships and love," he said. "Most of my songs up to this point are loving life songs, not love songs. During this process, I was going through a two-year-long relationship." The passionate pair went from living together to separating to trying to make it work living apart. By the album's end, they had also come to the conclusion to part ways.

37

With this mantra, he has written several books under his independent publishing company, Youniverse Pub. Did I Ever Wake Up is a step-by-step guide on "how to make life a dream," and Happy to be Here Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 are journals half-written by Mod Sun, and are open the last half for the reader to become the author.

"I kept it honest, so if something happened, I put it down for a song that night," he said. "It definitely laid out the story that happened." Beautiful Problem is Mod Sun's latest video, which is heavily influenced by his ex-girlfriend. The last track, The End or Start Again?, is the mental battle of the break up.

38

"Every end is the new beginning. The love that we had may not have ended, it may have just continued. You can look at it from many different angles, like having memories you wouldn't trade for the world and how it's worth going through those things," he said. "It's a giant teaching tool, and those endings

may have made you better than you were before. Now going into a new relationship, instead of trying to find someone that completes me, how about two wholes making one? That's what I've learned, and I wanted to let people into that." Minneapolis R&B/soul/pop musician Caroline Smith is at a different stage of her album, which (fingers crossed) will be complete soon. Since Smith was direct support at the 605 Summer Classic in 2015, she moved with her band to Los Angeles to record. "We still consider Minneapolis our home base," she said. "The band and I ventured out to Los Angeles

to switch it up creatively while we were working on the new album and experience somewhere new."

The album, which has not yet been titled, reflects Smith's life throughout the writing process.

It's been four years since the release of Half About Being a Woman, and Smith says this is the closet it's felt to being complete.

"It took a lot of time, because I didn't want a record that had one vein and one vibe," she said. "I wrote and evolved in my everyday life ... like I had one year where I was feeling down, and one year I was feeling poppy. What I think I have now is a very balanced, cross-section of the past four years that it's been since I've released something."

"We're going to be playing a lot of new songs," she said. "This is us wrapping up an album, so we're excited to show those off." Mod Sun, who hasn't been to Sioux Falls since he played hockey as a teenager ("I'm not even [explicit] kidding you"), is looking forward to headlining Saturday for the music and South Dakota beer festival weekend. As our phone call came to an end, he vented about school sports and how he hates that you "have to choose one," which angers him about feeling like people have to choose what they want to be remembered by or known as. He referenced Jim Morrison's title as "American Poet" on the cover of Rolling Stone following his passing.

"On my tombstone, I want it to say, 'Artist. Writer. Poet. Musician. Painter.' I want it to say all these things," he said. He went on to say Paris is one of this favorite places in the world, and visits there often. He can be found frequently getting kicked out of Jim Morrison's gravesite at the famous Père Lachaise Cemetery. "I totally want to be buried there one day," he said.

MODERN MINIMALISM AT MOE'S BY NATALIE SLIETER

You’ve Been Framed opened in Sioux Falls in 2004. Originally, Dettler thought about adding a second location for another YBF store, but Dettler loved the accent pieces she purchased from MOE’S for the lifestyle store, and was familiar with their Midcentury look. We have been waiting for Lake Lorraine to become our second location, and MOE’S was the perfect fit,” said Dettler. When Dettler heard last summer that construction would begin in the Lake Lorraine area, she knew it was time to start collaborating so the store could be opened up as soon as possible. WISDOM FROM A CAR SEAT BY TRACY KIRBY | CRISTA BALLARD PHOTOGRAPHY

To anyone that has any contact with children, as well as any sort of vehicular transport of them, they know, there is indeed a dark side to this whole “begetting” of children situation. That dark side being, of course, car seats. Car seats! How I loathe and love you all at the same time. You protect my children from harm, and for that I am forever and ever grateful. But why do you have to be so puzzling, beefy, and impossible to move? Even the ones that advertise themselves as “easy to install” and “tighten

with a click” are simply liars. Liars. There is a reason there are several places you can go and have your work as a parent checked when it comes to car seat install; any type of academic prowess has no meaning or bearing on your ability to install the seats. I have seen highly intelligent grown men and women (who shall remain nameless) reduced to tantrums and lament trying to install a tiny car seat. Was that a click? Is that the click we are supposed to hear? Listen! Did it click? Is this moving side-to-side more than a quarter of an inch? How

much is a quarter of an inch? Is this thing level? Wait. Was that the click?

even then, I am not 100 percent confident they would be installed right.

YOU GUYS KNOW WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT.

Last week, however, I was forced to do this very thing. I had purchased a large mirror for our house, and I was so excited to get the mirror home. My husband (wisely) advised me to just pay the delivery fee to get the mirror moved, but brilliant

And that is why once my husband installs the bulky seats, I vow to never move them. They become permanent fixtures in my vehicle, much like the straw wrapper trash that is perpetually strewn about. Wanna carpool? Nope. Because that would mean I would have to move my car seats, and that would take approximately one decade to remove and reinstall, and

me balked at the idea and proudly said, “No! We can do it, Jon.” Which is just really code for, “You can do it, Jon.” With a sigh, he acquiesced and asked me to clean out the car, including the car

LIFESTYLE

CAR SEATS! HOW I LOATHE AND LOVE YOU ALL AT THE SAME TIME. seats, to make room for the mirror, so he could quickly run to the store and pick it up since he was short on time. I happily agreed. At first, I felt victorious. I cleaned out the whole car first, and then started in on removing the car seats. I unhooked all the straps, pressed all the right buttons, and out they came. But what awaited me when I looked under the seats once they were removed … dear reader, I was not prepared. You see, often times, when there is crying or screaming in the

backseat, I put the fire out by merely throwing a snack back there. In fact, currently I keep a Costco-sized behemoth jar of animal crackers in the passenger seat and pass a handful back if/when all hell breaks loose in the backseat. I always thought it was a genius move, until the moment I removed the car seats. In that moment, I questioned every parenting decision I’ve ever made, because what I found was truly heinous: A mountain of undeniable moldy, moldy snack remnants. Crumbs of every shape

and color. Debris of all kinds. A science project of disgusting.

with a clean exterior, but, unbeknownst to me, a rotting, disgusting interior.

I wanted to take a picture to show my husband, but then I quickly realized that was a bad move. Why would I ever want concrete evidence this ever happened on my watch? So, instead, I quickly got to work (unfortunately, without a much-needed hazmat suit) and cleaned, bleached, and destroyed all the evidence. I took all the covers off the seats and washed them on the “sanitize” cycle on our washer and dryer and pretended it all never happened.

The more I thought about it, the more this whole debacle became such a metaphor for so many things for me as it relates to life in general. I can so easily become overwhelmed by a problem or issue and just throw quick, easy fixes at it. But if I do the hard work now, wrestle the issue or situation out of the way, and clean up the debris and decay it hides in its shadow — it won’t have time to fester. And thus, I won’t have such a vile, gag-inducing, noxious mess to clean up down the line.

But, for some reason, I just cannot forget. I cannot forget the filth that was residing just out of sight, but ever-so-close to my children on a daily basis. If only I would have moved the car seats every once in awhile, I would have seen the build up and removed it before it had a chance to decay and mold. If only I wasn’t so overwhelmed, intimidated, and fearful of the monstrosities that are car seats in this 21st century, I would have peered back there and solved the problem before it began. But, alas, such was not the case. For months and months, I drove around

I’ve started checking my car seats once a week. It hasn’t been easy. The convoluted straps and buckles of the labyrinth of car seat engineering and I have become one. I’ve even washed the car seat covers twice since. And you know what? No one else has noticed. No one can see a change. But, I can. I know there is no longer decomposing debris in my car or in my life anymore, and that peace of mind is so worth all the unnoticed heavy (car seat) lifting. •

O DRIFTERS BAR & GRILLE (605) 220-5014 // driftersbarandgrille.com // 325 E. Hustan Ave., Fort Pierre, S.D. 57532

No matter where we sat, there was an incredible view of the Missouri River, and it felt like we were on vacation. Our server, Tara, greeted us, and handed us menus that I wish I could have taken home with me. They were presented on classy, wooden boards. Each page of the food and drink menus had beautiful seafood and river-inspired designs. “Who designed this? This is amazing,” I said.

When we finally got to actually reading the menu, it was apparent we were not at what you would expect from an average “bar and grille.” First off, I love a good theme, and food items were listed as “Bait, Hooks, Lines, Sinkers, and For the Crew.” I was loving it.

to Oyster Po-Boy to Chicken Strips. It’s been a while since I’ve seen such a nice variety of seafood options. My eyes darted to the Tuna Stack. “Sushi rice, avocado, seared Yellowfin Tuna, spicy mayo, eel sauce, and scallions.” What in the what?! It came out and looked like a giant piece of sushi, expect eating this with a fork is a must and is more acceptable that chopsticks in this presentation. It was heaven. The sauces had so much flavor, and there was plenty on the plate to dip in to. It was so good that I honestly have thought of reasons to try to get to Fort Pierre so I can order it again. For a lighter fare, we tried Thai, which included edamame, red peppers, carrots, toasted peanuts, scallions, and sesame ginger dressing. There are protein addons, so I chose shrimp. This definitely is a good choice if you don’t want anything

They had everything from Coconut Shrimp to Chipotle Chicken Nachos

Walking into the restaurant (which is connected to its event center), it felt like a modern boathouse, with a canoe hanging over the bar and cowhide (faux or real, I’m not sure) bar stools. A classy seagull statue welcomes you at the entrance, and the open floor plan had varieties of seating, including a nice area for a larger dinner or business meeting.

“Oh, thanks! I actually did all of the branding,” she replied. We then found out Tara Berg worked directly with the owner, Emily Zarecky, on the design for the business through her company, DESIGNWORKS. It did seem like a lot of details with the décor and branding were very well thought out, and I found out later from Zarecky that she had been planning the restaurant and event center for 10 years when the land was purchased in 2006. Drifters is the “kickoff” to more phases for the Riverwalk Landing Development on Teton Island. They are working on an expansive marina with on-site boating services, as well as developing small businesses and residential condominiums.

THAI too heavy, but I would suggest ordering the protein to kick it up a notch. The Irish Burger was next, and it looked like a food commercial. It was gooey goodness, with a bleu cheesestuffed Angus burger, an Irish whiskey glaze, Guinness beer cheese, and was topped with haystacks and a pretzel bun. I’m almost positive I said this last month, but pretzel buns

make everything better. We ordered the steak fries for our side, and they were one of my highlights. Not only did we get to indulge in the thick fries seasoned with pepper and sea salt, but we doubled down with a side of onion rings. They were so crispy, you could easily bite through them (even for those of us who failed to put in our rubber bands with braces and don’t have aligned

jaws… sorry, Mom). John was on a diet, which almost seemed cruel to eat all of these things in front of him, so he ordered the Tuna. This was pan-seared, Mediterranean tapenade, with garbanzo bean puree. Again, the sauce reigned supreme and made the meal very savory, and the tuna almost seemed to melt when you cut into it.

ZARECKY MADE US THE FOX IN THE HEN HOUSE COCKTAIL, MADE WITH CROWN VANILLA, SIMPLE SYRUP, FRESH LEMON, AND EGG WHITE. IT WASN’T TOO SWEET, AND WAS SO DELICIOUS IT ALMOST SEEMS DANGEROUS.

O BOTTOM LINE:

Everything was very fresh and delicious. And if it wasn’t weird, I would write love letters to the Tuna Stack. Seriously. Don’t worry, Tuna Stack; I’m coming back for you!

I love, love, loved the modern boathouse vibe. The views can’t be beat, and it should be amazing in these warmer months with a bonfire outside and all of the water activity to watch as you enjoy a meal or drinks. If you’re in the area, it’s a can’t-miss.

It’s very much priced right with items like ribeye being $24 and sliders costing $10. I’m not sure how these prices compare to other Pierre/Fort Pierre restaurants, but you’re definitely getting your money’s worth.

Did I mention the Tuna Stack yet? Even the burger and fries had so many flavors, and the sauces! Oh, all of the (amazing) sauces!

“ARE YOU GUYS LOST?” IS A QUESTION KASEY ABBOTT AND BOB THIMJON SAY THEY GET A LOT. “IS SOMEONE MAKING YOU DO THIS?” IS ONE THAT OFTEN FOLLOWS. 605 sat down at Ode to Food and Drinks in Sioux Falls with the two Ride Across South Dakota (RASDak) organizers, overlooking the spot along the Big Sioux River that their seven-day, 517-mile bike tour will meet its finish line. The ride takes place June 4-10, launches in Rapid City, and runs through spots like the Badlands, Wall, Presho, and Wessington Springs. The route has shifted each year, but organizers are offering a locational throwback to the tour’s inaugural run. “Sioux Falls is really a beautiful city, and we’ve done so much with our riverfront, we thought, we need to show this off,” said Abbott. “A lot has changed in five years.” A lot has changed for RASDak, too. Five years ago, Abbott and Thimjon say the entire tour was planned in two months, after the popular Tour Dakota bike ride set up their kickstands. Now, it’s a year-round process, and the ride has grown from 85 participants to nearly 200.

Perhaps the biggest issue, they say, is making sure participants

vidual days with the group. It’s a big effort for the 15 volunteers Abbott says make up their team. In addition to finding hospitality options along the way, volunteers mark routes, provide safety trailers and warnings to drivers, transport cyclists’ luggage to each campsite, and coordinate rest room facilities. SAG volunteers look out for weary riders and help transport bikes in severe weather. While comparable bike tours can cost thousands of dollars, registration fees this year cost only $175.

don’t overdo it.

Days can be long. The group covers about 75-100 miles a day, with rest stops about every 15 miles. Days begin around 5:30 a.m., and all cyclists have to be at the day’s final host destination by 5 p.m. You don’t have to be experienced, Abbott and Thimjon assured, but preparation pays off. “There are some people that do not prepare that much, but we recommend that you spend a lot of time in the ‘saddle,’” explained Abbott, “because you’ve gotta be in cardio shape, and you also have to have your butt toughened up enough that you don’t get sore.” Thimjon agreed, “If you get sore early in the week, it’s not going to get any better during the rest of the week.”

“We’ll have trouble in that people will want to finish the ride and won’t quit, and we just have to be careful that people don’t push themselves too far,” said Abbott. “Our SAG team does a good job of making sure nobody gets into trouble.” Stops along the way often come with local specialties and are what make this tour unique. Cyclists come across spots known for their pies, kuchen pastries, donuts, or homemade soups. In others, farm families have served up massive dinners to the pack of hungry riders in parts of the state many locals haven’t stumbled upon. “Somehow, I think everybody gains some weight during the week,” said Abbott. And the tour gives back – doubling some towns’ populations with hundreds of riders and stimulating local business. Funds collected through RASDak also allow the group to boost communities through scholarships. Five hundred dollar awards go to students in five towns this year, whose projects have helped improve their communities. A $500 scholarship is also awarded to the town that bicyclists vote as their favorite overnight stay.

“We’ve earned a ton of good will by stopping in these small towns… and it shows that bike tourism is viable in South Dakota, and there’s a lot of opportunities,” recalled Abbott. The tour isn’t just encouraging locals to learn more about the area, but attracting national attention. Cyclists are traveling from 25 states and Canada this June to experience the state’s landscape more intimately than from the confines of a speeding SUV. “That’s the fun thing – showing people from all over the country,” said Abbott. “Everybody knows about the Badlands and the Black Hills, but [it’s about] showing them all these other cool little places. As far as variety goes, I can’t think of a state that has more variety with the scenery and the culture.” “It’s a fun week with great people and great scenery,” agreed Thimjon. Mile by mile, RASDak is proving that bike tourism is a growing industry in South Dakota. And that, Abbott says, pays off. “It’s a lot of us who say this – it’s the best week of the year for us.” FOR MORE INFORMATION AND A FULL MAP OF RASDAK’S TOUR, VISIT RASDAK.COM.

517 mile bike tour EE Rasdakians sport new themed jerseys each year for the ride. EE It’s recommended that cyclists wear a special mirror attached to a helmet or sunglasses in order to view traffic behind them. EE RASDak cyclists are encouraged to get most of their miles in during the morning hours to avoid severe weather and tough head winds – more common during the afternoons. EE If 517 miles aren’t enough, cyclists have the option of adding extra miles through alternative route options at some points in the trip.

YES, ALL THREE OF THESE GUYS ARE NAMED JOHN. YES, IT WAS A POPULAR NAME IN THE ‘80S. THE IDENTITY OF THESE THREE AMIGOS HAVE BEEN ALTERED TO PROTECT THE INNOCENT. HAVE A QUESTION FOR THE JOHNS? SHOOT AN E-MAIL THEIR WAY AT THEJOHNS@605MAGAZINE.COM.

MY COUSIN’S WEDDING HAPPENS TO BE THE WEEKEND BEFORE OUR LAST FAMILY REUNION. WHAT DO I DO WHEN MY BOSS ONLY LETS ME TAKE OFF ONE LONG WEEKEND?

OUR KIDS HAVE SUMMER ACTIVITIES ALMOST EVERY DAY. HOW DO I CONVINCE THEM TO MAKE TIME FOR FAMILY WITHOUT MAKING THEIR ACTIVITIES SEEM UNIMPORTANT?

I LOVE GOING TO CONCERTS IN THE SUMMER, BUT I DON’T WANT TO BREAK THE BANK. WHAT ARE SOME WAYS TO ENJOY LIVE MUSIC WITHOUT PUTTING A HUGE DENT IN MY BANK ACCOUNT?

JR: One weekend off and your choices are either a cousin’s wedding or family reunion? Your cousin will probably get married again, and there sure as heck will be another family reunion. Take a pass on both and strike out on your own.

JR: Say, "Listen, kid, we aren’t going to make swimming lessons today. Instead, we're going to the lake, where you'll really learn how to doggie paddle." Helpful and a veiled threat!

JR: If scores of people who appear not to have a dollar to their name can follow Phish and Grateful Dead around for decades, you can find a way. You might have to eat cheese and avoid showers all summer, but you can do it.

JW: Skip the wedding; this is your excuse. Weddings are the worst, and now you're free at last! JT: That's very kind of you to be stuck between two family events for your weekend off of work. How about this ... I bet your cousin won't be attending the family reunion, since they'll probably be on their honeymoon. If they're celebrating their honeymoon at the family reunion, you all need to start questioning your "closeness."

JW: Develop an elaborate scheme in which there is no way to succeed, then they will be ultimately grounded for doing something wrong, and thus they'll have to miss some of their activities. It's all mind games, son. JT: Is George Jr. signing himself up? Maybe just don't sign them up for so many activities and make them choose. Then they'll spend the rest of their lives regretting not picking ballet... I'm talking about a friend, of course.
