October is probably my favorite issue of the year. I love learning about history (and getting spooked while I’m at it). When chatting with author Tom Griffith about his book Black Hills Myths and Legends (page 96), he told me to come to his bed and breakfast for his head shot. I then found out he’s also the co-owner of 1899 Inn with his wife, Nyla. On the spot we decided to make that our home feature, and I had a blast touring the site and seeing everything from the servants’ stairs to the incredible ceiling angles in the Music Room. Definitely worth a stay (or two).

I’ve always been really interested in South Dakota history, so when I heard about The Brothel Deadwood opening up (page 16), I was super excited to check it out with the team. While touring, all I could think of was “if these walls could talk,” and if you’re ever in the Deadwood area, make sure to stop by and learn about the 104 years of history. Also, for all of you Norwegians out there, the Pheasant in Brookings has a Scandi Waffle that we got to try (page 52), and now I’ll be making a monthly weekend trip up north for brunch. The Gjetost goat cheese will give you all of the Nordic vibes.

THE BROTHEL
DEADWOOD by Dawn Geertsema Get an up-close look inside the world’s oldest profession at The Brothel Deadwood located at the infamous address, 610 Main Street. Tours started August 1, exploring the real history and impact of the illegal Shasta Rooms brothel and its workers from 1876 until it (along with three other brothels) was busted by federal authorities on May 21, 1980. 16 |
605MAGAZINE.COM
“It was our Main Street initiative group trying to make sure that the focus came back to Main Street in Deadwood,” explained Deadwood History, Inc. communications director Rose Speirs. “They were also looking at ways to repurpose or reuse [the historical] second f loors of certain buildings on Main Street that were sitting empty and could be put to use,” said executive director Carolyn Weber. Deadwood History, Inc. is also behind the Historic Adams House, the Adams Museum, the Homestake Adams Research and Cultural Center, and the Days of ‘76 Museum. After about three years of planning and organizing, the group opened the tours of The Brothel Deadwood for visitors 16 years or older. “It’s a subject that has been often overlooked and misrepresented,” said Weber. “We’re trying to get the truth out about what happened here in Deadwood, make people aware of it and its role that it has in the complete narrative.” T H E H I S T O R Y I S S U E october 2020

“[SEX WORKERS] MADE A LOT OF MONEY, AND THEY SPENT A LOT OF MONEY IN OUR COMMUNITY. THEY GAVE GENEROUSLY. THEY WERE VERY PHILANTHROPIC TO ORGANIZATIONS HERE IN TOWN.” -Carolyn
The tours begin in the parlor before visitors follow tour guides into a series of nine to 10 rooms with varying stories and topics. The first four rooms are working rooms based in different eras of the brothel. “Of course we wanted to focus on the realities of sex work,” assured Weber. “We’re not trying to glamorize or glorify anything. We don’t take a stand. We’re not approving or condemning prostitution and the brothels in Deadwood.” After the era rooms, the tour leads into a personal bedroom of a worker, where it focuses on the human side of the women behind the profession. “These were real women who worked here, and we don’t want them to be defined for just that work and their job,” said Weber. “They’re multifaceted just like everybody else.”
Admission + Hours » TICKETS // $15/PERSON // 16+ » OCTOBER-APRIL // OPEN WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY 11 A.M. - 7 P.M. » MAY-SEPTEMBER // OPEN DAILY 11 A.M. - 7 P.M.
Following the personal bedroom is the madam’s office where monetary transactions took place, the madam’s bedroom, and more. At the end of the tours, there is a viewing room where videos of interviews with people who have interacted with the women are on display, Speirs said. Some interviewees include the current mayor of Deadwood, women who cleaned the rooms, and other locals. Many of the curated items and décor in the museum are accurate to the time periods the rooms are set in. Some items were donations, while others were bought elsewhere. Some of the items Weber has acquired include bedroom furniture, clothing, jewelry, and light fixtures—which are “dynamite,” according to Speirs. “It’s not just the furnishings,” said Speirs. “It’s the words that will help fine-tune the story.”

Speirs’ favorite parts of the brothel are the script and the interviews, while for Weber, the best part is the anecdotes spanning 104 years they have to share. “The stories we have to tell about incidents that have happened with individuals that were part of the brothels,” she informed. “There’s some really poignant and endearing stories, and there are ugly stories out there. And those are the things that I like a lot.”
24 |
And when you visit The Brothel Deadwood, they just have one request. “Look at it a little more objectively,” insisted Speirs. “It’s a very difficult subject matter. So maybe after you hear the story… it might be easier for you to see through somebody else’s eyes.”

THE GEM STEAKHOUSE & SALOON by Alana Snyder
I, like many others, am a fan of the HBO series Deadwood. I also may have custom artwork of some of the characters in my house. But that’s a story for another time.
For a quick background, May of 1876 Al Swearengen arrived in Deadwood. By the end of the week, he had a dancehall in full swing called The Gem Theater, which officially opened in 1877. “The Gem was one of the longest running ‘entertainment venues’ in town,” said Joni Hamann, Mineral Palace director of player development. “It really was a brothel, to be honest.” Now dubbed The Gem Steakhouse & Saloon, it’s located in the original site of the theater inside of the Mineral Palace complex.

“We’ve focused on the history, so the menu has items based off of a character from the series,” said Hamann. “We take great pride that we’re the original location. A lot of people do come look for us because we’re The Gem.” The restaurant is on the second floor of the building, and the 605 crew arrived via elevator on a Friday evening. As we were in the area shooting stories and to throw the 605 Black Hills Classic, we were sweaty messes, which worked out as there’s no dress code.
28 |
“If you want a good steak, come here. We’re nothing fancy, we’re just us,” said Hamann. “You can be yourself, and it’s the way you like it.” It was definitely a place where you could come as you are or get dressed up and feel like ordering a bottle of wine with your meal. Our table had a view of the bar, which led off to a patio overlooking Main Street. Funny enough, it was directly across from The Brothel Deadwood, which is where we had just come from.

FACT
FOOD + DRINK
DUE TO THE DEADWOOD FIRES, THE GEM WAS RESURRECTED SEVERAL TIMES, BUT THE GREAT FIRE OF 1899 CLOSED ITS DOORS FOR GOOD. IN ITS PRIME, IT WOULD TAKE IN AS MUCH AS $10,000 IN A SINGLE EVENING.
After we noshed on a vegetable tray to get a good base, we started with Gold Strike Chislic. This typically has six ounces of breaded or unbreaded beef chislic served with a choice of steak sauce or BBQ sauce. We got both. Though both were cooked to tender perfection, we agreed the seasoning made the breaded option the winner (I know, chislic connoisseurs are gonna hate). “It literally falls apart,” said 605 multimedia designer Peyton Brokiewicz on the tenderness. “Yeah, sometimes chislic can be cooked to the point where it’s like beef jerky,” said 605 account manager Taylor Hanson. We were intrigued that the chislic was also served with oranges and cheese cubes. And we were intrigued enough to devour it. Next up included Merrick’s Garlic Ribeye (a 12-ounce aged ribeye, charbroiled and topped with hot garlic butter and parmesan cheese) and Cochran’s Strip (a 12-ounce aged New York strip steak prepared to the patron’s liking and topped with either melted blue cheese or hot garlic butter and parmesan cheese). We had the blue cheese. How have I never thought to melt cheese on my steak? Where did I miss this (simple) memo? The team was split on which one was the best, when the Mineral Palace Ribeye hit the table like a boulder. This 34-ounce choice bone-in ribeye was charbroiled medium rare to medium. Note, if you order this item, allow more time for the massiveness (and majesty) of it. Lead multimedia designer Jordan Cushman quietly exclaimed, “Dear God,” as it was placed in front of him.

THE TEAM ALSO TRIED WILD BILL’S WALLEYE—A 12-OUNCE GRILLED WALLEYE FILET.
Peyton only eats meat on rare occasions, and this was that said occasion. The entire meal was definitely an example of why people travel from all over the world to order steak from South Dakota. They did it justice. Just as we took our napkins off of our (bloated) laps, Chocolate Lava Cake, Cheesecake, Bananas Foster Cheesecake, Raspberry Swirl Cheesecake, and Tuxedo Cheesecake appeared. We groaned. We ate. We cleaned our plates.+
BOTTOM LINE: It was a great Friday night in Deadwood. We were beyond full of some of the best steak I’ve had in a while. We finished the experience with boozy ice cream drinks and looked out at Main Street to people watch. I’m looking forward to coming back to try breakfast and lunch. Heck, maybe I’ll just stay there.

As Hamann mentioned, it’s a very casual atmosphere. But it’s the atmosphere where The Gem Theater once stood, which is legendary. Also, you don’t have to twist my arm to have a cocktail on the patio and have one of the best views on Main Street.
It’s a steakhouse, but you can choose anything from a $9.95 quesadilla to a $52.95 34-ounce ribeye. Try items like Earp’s Sirloin for only $14.95. Affordable meat? Done.
Peyton doesn’t eat steak hardly ever, and she was digging each dish. That Mineral Palace Ribeye is forever engraved in my mind, and now I’m only eating my steak with melted cheese on top. It won’t be the same, though.

Meet the Creative
TYLER BLAKE by Dawn Geertsema Tyler Blake started his creative career as a dancer, but says he was met with “roadblocks” and never felt he was fully able to express himself in the dance world. Trying his hand at both photography and filmmaking, he experienced the same struggles. So, Blake says he no longer wanted to be “just a dancer” and branched out. He’s now the creative director and co-owner of wäke, an online clothing brand. Alongside his business partner and fiancé Monalisa Perez, Blake began building wäke in their basement. Before the wäke brand became the force it is today, Blake and Perez started by selling sunglasses on eBay and Poshmark.

I started wäke because... as an artist I needed a
space to express myself freely. Some may know that my journey as a creative started as a dancer, and even then I felt that there was a limit or a wall to just considering myself as ‘ just a dancer.’ Even as a freelance photographer and filmmaker I met my roadblocks to expressing myself freely. It was only when I created my own brand that allowed me to do what I want.
People might know me from... the People Being People podcast, a show that my fiancé/business partner Monalisa started to connect with our audience on a deeper level as entrepreneurs and individuals working at finding our place in the world every day. Our stories are far beyond the clothing and sharing our take on self-love through the clothing we create. We wanted to let people in beyond that, and [that] has connected us with so many cool people that have, in turn, shared their stories with us.
38 |
The best part of my job is... being able to create pieces of art for people to enjoy and connect to their own lives. It’s the best feeling.
One of my favorite projects has been... organizing our pop-up shop that we hosted in Chicago. With us being a baby as a company, we were pretty surprised with the turnout. [We] can’t wait to do more as the world starts to open back up.

WE’RE CURRENTLY IN THE PROCESS OF OUR FALL/WINTER 2021 COLLECTION, AND LET’S JUST SAY WE’RE PLANNING ON GETTING BACK TO THE CORE OF WHAT STREETWEAR IS ALL ABOUT. I’M REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THIS SEASON.”
Customers come to the website looking for... our No. 1
sellers, which are our t-shirts and BIKERSHORTS+. We might need to open a biker shorts factory someday because no matter what we drop people just keep buying biker shorts from us. Trust me; we work hard to keep them in stock. [It’s] a good problem to have. I won’t complain.
My favorite thing in our store right now is... our
REMINDERCHARM. It’s good to have the reminder every day that you’re valuable beyond measure, and I believe we work really hard at making sure that our customers know this.
I don’t do this alone... and wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for Monalisa. Business is business, but it’s even better when it’s within your family.
Our clothing style is inspired by... just being as stylish as you can
while staying comfortable and simplistic, yet loud at the same time.
What I loved about putting together wäke was... the grind
toward launching it. Monalisa and I literally sold sunglasses on Poshmark and eBay all of summer 2018 to get wäke started. Who would have known sunglasses were the answer?

What people might know about wäke is... that the brand is all about self-love and self-awareness. When I walk around downtown, one of my favorite places to stop by… was Kaizen Studio [before] COVID started. Something that is influencing me right now is... working on moving wäke out of our home. Steve
Jobs started Apple out of his garage, and wäke started out of our basement. We have a long way to go, and the process is interesting to say the least.

I love to grab a bite or drink... at Oshima Sushi Japanese Cuisine or JL Beers downtown, a couple of Monalisa’s and my favorite spots.
My favorite place to go for inspiration is... the internet right now... so much endless art
and creativity. When I was living back home in Chicago it was Saks Fifth Avenue. I loved stopping by Saks during my teenage years just to get inspired by all of the designer clothing. I understand it now—brands, business, and how they work. But it’s still crazy to me that there are hoodies out there priced at $1,200.

“We have people who come in every day, we have people come in for an experience, we have people come in every time they visit town, we have people come in just for the story.”
Johnson (pictured above) is also the grandson of owners Ronald and Georginia Olson, who have been the owners since 1966. The oldest full service restaurant in Brookings was established in 1949. “It was honestly hard to pick just a few items that represent us,” said Johnson.
“As we move forward in all of our traditions, we have chosen to lean into micro local food traditions, and it seems like a lot of restaurants in this part of the country lean away from it,” continued Johnson, “and we’re really proud of what this place has to offer. We not only use local ingredients, but we use it in a way that honors what people have been eating around here for a long time.”
This is because the Pheasant’s menu is inspired by a number of influences, like the culture and heritage of the area, for example.
Johnson says the Pheasant tries to find a balance of representing Scandinavian, German, and Native American food culture with its dishes.

The Scandi is a semi-sweet and tangy option with lemon-infused sour cream, gjetost (mild, caramelly Noregian cheese), and lingonberry preserves. “[The Scandi] is vegetarian, and it’s heavily Scandinavianinfluenced,” said Johnson. “Norweigians would typically eat a waffle with lingonberries, or brown cheese, or some kind berries with cream, so we put it all into one waffle.” For a side option, the Pheasant serves tater tots with a (smokey) twist. “I was trying to think of a side for a Nordic-central brunch menu and I set up smoked tots in the middle of the night and thought, ‘Has anyone ever smoked tots?’” Johnson said, “Those have been a real hit, and people come just for them sometimes.” More of eastern South Dakota is shown in the lineup with meats like bison, lamb, and steaks. A Native American focused dish is the South Dakota Bison Filet with Wojapi Sauce with six ounces of choice, grass-fed South Dakota bison tenderloin wrapped in bacon, fire-grilled medium rare, and topped with a First Nationsinspired sauce of raspberries, herbs, and local honey.
THE BLOODY VIKING IS ONE EXAMPLE OF THE PHEASANT USING INGREDIENTS RIGHT FROM THE PATIO. “WE GARNISH WITH WHAT WE HAVE AROUND, SO LATE SPRING, SUMMER, AND EARLY FALL WE HAVE ITEMS GROWING ON THE PATIO LIKE PEPPERS, ONIONS, TOMATOES, HERBS, AND KALE,” SAID JOHSON. “WE’LL GRAB SOME PEPPERS AND CHERRY TOMATOES, AND IN THE WINTER WE’LL CHOOSE MORE PICKLED ITEMS OR WHATEVER IS AVAILABLE AND SEASONAL.”

“We wanted to show the more traditional side of native foods, so it’s a fire-grilled piece of meat, and we use a honey-raspberry wojapi made with local honey, local raspberries, and sun-dried herbs,” said Johnson. The Pheasant Salad Lettuce Wraps is another way to showcase South Dakota meat with ring-necked pheasant with dried cranberries, apple, and pecans, served with heart of Romaine cups. Johnson says the salad was put together for a culinary competition years back and was created as an elevated version of the pheasant sandwich that was once served during World War II to service people in Aberdeen. 605MAGAZINE.COM

“The [pheasant salad] sandwich has received a lot of recognition from media like [O, The Oprah Magazine], and a lot of people don’t know we offer a [lettuce] wrap version,” explained Johnson. “We wanted to come up with something that was a four season thing that had ingredients you could find all year long and was freshened up.” Drinks are also concepted with fresh details in mind. Trevor Clements is the assistant manager and house ice cream artisan and cocktail artisan (pictured above). He uses both of his areas of expertise with concoctions like the Beer Float. “Occasionally we’ll have dessert drinks,” said Johnson. “In the fall Trevor makes an awesome pumpkin ice cream. There’s nothing chocolate in the float, but once you combine the carmelized, cinnamon ice cream with an oatmeal stout, it takes on a Mexican chocolate flavor.”

The eatery also has a wine club and the Pheasant Wine Cellar and Oil & Vinegar Tasting Bar. Because of this, the staff will make a shrub cocktail “that uses vinegar in some form.” The one created for 605 included brown sugar bourbon with mapleinfused balsamic vinegar, a cinnamon stick, and apple garnish. From café classics like hot roast beef to wine dinners, Johnson says the Pheasant appeases to a vast audience. “It’s really kind of a hub and it really reflects who we are, and I really hope everyone sees themselves represented in the menu.”

“OUR INTENT ALWAYS HAS BEEN TO BRING GREAT CRAFT BEER TO THE CITIZENS AND STUDENTS IN BROOKINGS AND DO SO IN SUCH A WAY THAT IS SUPER UNDERSTANDABLE AND TRANSPARENT,” SAID OWNER SETH KOCH. “PEOPLE CAN COME AND CHECK OUT THE TAPROOM, GET TO KNOW THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE THE BEER, AND GET TO KNOW THEIR COMMUNITY IN GENERAL.” After opening the taproom doors in 2013, Wooden Legs Brewing Company has aimed to kindle “great beer and great conversation” between friends bonding over a board game. “We’ve kind of leaned into the fact that all of our staff has a little bit of ‘nerdy’ in them,” said Koch. “When we started talking about ways to bring people together to just chill and enjoy the experience, board games were a really natural way of doing it.” The brewery’s board game collection includes The Settlers of Catan, Santorini, Brewmaster: Craft Beer Game, the prized Monopoly: Onyx Edition, and more. At various times throughout the week, guests can attend events like Trivia Tuesday, a battle of brains; Learn to Play, a chance to learn a new game; and Wall Street Wednesday, a stock market-style drinking experience. Koch says Wall Street Wednesday is one of the most unique events they host. Starting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, prices of all beers fluctuate from their original amount depending on what people are drinking more of and what they aren’t. “We have our prices on a big screen, and if nobody orders a particular beer for two minutes, the beer price drops,” said Koch. “And if somebody comes in and orders two or three of a certain pint in two minutes, that price goes up and all the others go down. It’s like a dynamically ran happy hour.” Being one of the first craft beer breweries on I-29, Koch says his brewery focuses on catering to a diverse set of tastes. “Sometimes this is the first craft beer bar they’ve been in, let alone brewery in some cases. We really try hard to make sure there’s a bouquet of a whole bunch of different beers,” said Koch. And when those customers walk through the doors of Wooden Legs, Koch wants them to remember one thing: “It’s okay to be a little dorky and talk with the people you brought.”+

1899 INN I
by Dawn Geertsema
WITH BEER, CIDER & HARD SELTZERS.
n 1884 Deadwood, H.B. Wardman built a small, one-story home for his family of four. With the passing of his wife, Wardman sold his business, moved his home, and began construction on a notably larger, Queen Anne-style home at the front of his new lot. He finished construction in 18 99 , and the house became the family home. After 121 years, the house is now something different.
Tucked inside the Presidential District of Deadwood, the home—now the 1899 Inn bed and breakfast—is run by Tom and Nyla Griffith. “It takes [guests] back in time and allows them to explore the history and mystery of not only Deadwood, but the Black Hills,” said Tom.
PRAIRIE BERRY LLC | HILL CITY, SD
Famous Furniture In the Old Library Room, the matching walnut bedroom set once belonged to Hank Frawley, a famous 19thcentury Deadwood rancher and lawyer. Frawley brought the furniture to Deadwood in the 1880s in a covered wagon. Some of his law books can be found in the room as well.
19th Century Suites The inn has six units to offer and can house 18 guests comfortably. Each room has a different theme: Old Library Room, Music Room, Attic Suite, Maid’s Room, Writing Room, and Master Suite. Tom says virtually all of the furniture in the inn is period-correct. From bedroom sets and couches to books and hutches, most of the furniture comes from the late 19th century to the early 20th century.
“The whole house is stunning. It was designed by an architect out of Chicago,” said Nyla. “When you f irst come in, there’s a big grand staircase up to the second and third f loors. The woodwork is incredible; the massiveness of the chunks of wood that form the staircase are impressive.” But they always have to keep in mind how old the home is. T H E H I S T O R Y I S S U E october 2020
“ With a 120-year-old house, there’s always something that needs to be f ixed,” admitted Nyla. Tom added, “There’s a different project every day.”
HOME + LIVING
Restoring History For a decade, the inn was owned and operated by their son Dustin Floyd and his wife, Laura. The couple completed countless renovations during their ownership. “When Dustin and Laura bought this years ago, it had been in foreclosure,” said Tom. “It had been vacant for two to three years. The bank had not heated it or drained the pipes, so every pipe had burst.” Tom and Nyla say that along with the infrastructure fixes, like plumbing and electrical that came along with owning the house, Dustin and Laura had also restored many pieces, including light fixtures, doorknobs, and stained glass. “They’re real purists when it comes to history,” explained Nyla. And Tom agreed, chiming in, “They really tried to return the home to its original grandeur.”

A Change of Scenery When Dustin and Laura decided they didn’t want to run the inn anymore, Tom and Nyla stepped up and took over in June 2020. “Tom and I had been doing some jobs that required a lot of mental effort, and we decided we’d like to do something different,” said Nyla. “We had had a bed and breakfast in the past, and we decided it’d be a great change for us.”

And a change it was. Both Nyla and Tom are authors of various books (see more on Tom’s latest work on page 96), and the couple says they spent much of their marriage traveling both for books and exploration. “It works out really well because I run around and do breakfast. I make the food and serve everyone. Tom talks to them,” said Nyla. “He’s got the background. He’s got the ability to tell everyone about the Black Hills and the surrounding area, where they should be going, what they should be seeing.”

Breakfasts and Tourism Tom boasted, proud of his wife, “I have to put a kudos out to Nyla because she makes outstanding breakfasts.”
Tom says breakfast also features jelly made from the grapes that grow on the front porch.
Nyla spends all day in the only modern part of the home, the kitchen, making gourmet food for guests to enjoy in the morning. She says the most time consuming part of the process is the fresh sourdough bread she makes from scratch every day.
And while she mostly chooses the meals she focuses on, Nyla says she’s more than willing to make people food that conforms to their special dietary needs.
“It takes all day to make two loaves, as it needs to be attended to every 30 minutes. We try to provide something that you’re not going to make yourself at home,” she said. “People seem really appreciative of the breakfast we make.”
While guests are eating their breakfast, Tom says he loves to create travel itineraries and spend time chatting with guests. “We enjoy visiting with them, learning a little bit about them, what intrigues them, what excites them so we can actually tailor a plan for their trip,” he explained.

Tom says that time with guests is his favorite part of running the 1899 Inn, explaining though, “Not just to help them form a travel itinerary for the day, but to give them a sense of who we are, what this inn is about, and the colorful characters who have inhabited this place in the past.”

It was incredibly well received, and CBS News actually did a story on it. + Every school I ever went to is no longer for its original purpose. Take Me Home, Country Road
Pre-Pandemic Fave
We haven’t had time to go on many walks. But we live in the country. So if we want to go on a walk, we just hop on the gravel road and take off down the path.
My favorite restaurant was Minervas, pre-pandemic. I loved their salad bar, which I don’t think exists right now. They used to make a New York Strip [steak] with garlic and blue cheese. It was excellent.
I love the Badlands [National Park], especially at night. The stars are just incredible. There’s no light pollution out there, so you can see the Milky Way and the stars around it. We’re beyond tent camping years, so we stay in cabins out there.
I’ve got two daughters and two grandchildren. They’re 10 and 12 years old. We like to spend time with them. We have a trampoline out here, a pool that we just put down. We’ve had a nice summer to utilize the pool and trampoline. And we have golf carts that they really like to drive around. They enjoy summers out here on the farm.

Feeling the Heat
We used to go someplace warm in the winter, though we didn’t do that last year. We’ve really started to enjoy Orange Beach, AL. It has beautiful sugar sand beaches, and it’s right between the Mississippi and Florida. It’s a beautiful secret area.

Where the Child Things Are
Ghosts, Bats, and Witches’ Hats by Kyle Determan For many of us in the Midwest, the first couple days of cool weather ignite an excitement that had been dormant since last fall. Sweaters, warm drinks, pumpkins, and the return of classic horror films on ABC Family.
In our house it means a never-ending pot of apple cider on the stove and endless hours on Pinterest in an attempt to find the perfect Halloween costume. Back in the day, before stocking up on festive dĂŠcor was my biggest concern, I was the queen of scary movies. Everything from the original Halloween movies to the latest Jordan Peele psychological thriller had my name written all over it.

MONSTER-B-GONE If your little one is suddenly afraid of what lurks in the dark, make them some Monster-B-Gone spray. We use water, coconut oil, and lavender oil to ward off any unwanted nighttime scaries.
Due to my lack of ability to stay up past 9:30 p.m., and because I don’t want to scar Sloan this early in life, I tend to stay away from the horror flicks and find myself enthralled in Curious George: A Halloween Boo Fest.
I started to look into things that could be making her world seem scarier than usual. We put nightlights in the darkest parts of the house, I put her books about monsters in her closet, and I even sat her down to explain why things aren’t scary.
So you can imagine my surprise when all of a sudden Sloan started saying “scary” to other people at the park, the ice machine in our fridge, and walking into dark rooms.
This is, until I realized that I was actually trying to tell my toddler that there is nothing to be afraid of in her giant, adult-sized world.
I’m usually pretty fluent in Sloan, so this new word seemed out of place and random, making me wonder where she had learned it and why she was suddenly associating commonplace things with fear.

What I’ve Learned » Children crave knowledge. Take the time to explain noises, people, or situations that seem to make them uncomfortable. » You can still celebrate Halloween with littles, just in a different manner. Utilize specials of their favorite shows or books to explore Halloween and all it has to offer.
Illogical fears? Maybe. But do I still feel afraid in those situations? Absolutely.
» Parents often dread trickor-treating with young children due to the variety of terrifying costumes that roam from house to house. Taking your child to a costume store and showing them they’re just that may ease their (and your) apprehension.
I did some research and found that children of Sloan’s age begin to comprehend playing pretend and the idea of imaginary worlds, which often leads to a blurred line of fantasy and reality. Not only that, but their long-term memory is beginning to develop, creating a bank of images, sounds, and moments that could evoke fear and apprehension. Instead of telling Sloan her fears aren’t real, I’m focusing on figuring out what makes things scary and how to help her understand them. Take the ice machine, for example; I let Sloan fill her own cup with ice, and now when she hears the ice she understands that the noise has a purpose.

Not all things are as easily explained, like her fear of the dark and why she doesn’t need to feel scared. Where I would usually try to console her and say, “it isn’t scary,” I now talk her through turning off the light, using a flashlight to see nothing has changed, and together we accept that even though we can’t see into the closet, we know there’s nothing to be afraid of. Fears change with age, experience, and outside factors, most of which we can’t control. The one thing we can control is how we embrace and understand the fears within our children, helping them cope with the uncertainty of new or fleeting anxiety. Whether it be a sudden fear of the dark, the overwhelming need to be attached at your hip, or an abrupt suspicion of strangers, kids often don’t have the tools to understand their newfound worries. This is where we come in. When we give our kids the support, words, and explanations they need to interpret their anxieties, they realize that fear comes from the unknown, and not weakness or fragility. Happy Halloween, everyone! And remember, being afraid is a natural part of life, and it’s our job to make it as smooth as possible.+

T.D. Griffith by Dawn Geertsema
Author/co-author of more than 80 books, Tom Griffith (under pen name T.D. Griffith) has set up his home base right where he says he always longs to be, the Black Hills. Griffith and his wife Nyla, a novelist, spend their days exploring and writing about the wonders of the area. Most recently, the couple became the innkeepers of one of the highest rated lodging properties in Deadwood, the 1899 Inn (read about it on page 66). Throughout his career, Griffith has been a reporter, a photographer, and an editor. His newest project, “Black

5 QUESTIONS WITH GRIFFITH How do you spend your time when you aren’t writing?
How long did you spend working on “Black Hills Myths and Legends?”
I travel quite a bit. Over the past 25 years or so, I’ve been to and written about 80 countries around the world. These aren’t three-day visits; they’re three week visits. My folks actually made us into travelers. They really instilled a sense of adventure in us.
The research took longer than the writing. There are 13 chapters, each about different myths in the Black Hills. They range from the Mammoth Site to Mount Rushmore National Memorial to Crazy Horse Memorial. It was about seven months.
Where’s your favorite place to go for inspiration?
When did you know you wanted to be an author?
The Black Hills. I love to come home. I spent a lot of time as a youth traveling through South Dakota, seeing our relatives from all over. I fell in love with this state. Every summer, I looked forward to coming back to the Black Hills.
It was seventh grade. My father was a writer and a conservationist. As the son of a writer, I was kind of naturally magnetized by it. I also spent summers as a youth with my grandmother in Mitchell. She was deaf, so I would write everything to her. Those summers, I guess I was learning to be a writer.

What has been your favorite project so far? I spent five years helping the Mount Rushmore Society mount a nationwide campaign to preserve the memorial and to stage its dedication in 1991 on the 50th anniversary. We raised $25 million, and it resulted in $56 million in improvements at Mount Rushmore, doubled the visitor lengthof-stay, and added a million people a year to the visitation. What I loved about that project is that very few of us get to do things that go beyond us.
