Flipping through each 605 issue, a lot of readers might not realize what all goes into each story. One prime example is the mural editorial on page 36. While we didn't have the chance to shoot all of the unique wall art across the state, we did capture many throughout the last year, including when I drove two hours out of the way to Faulkton to photograph the jaw-dropping mural on the grain elevator. I'm so happy I did. From Vermillion's newest collaboration to Art Alley, enjoy.

Time and time again, I find myself stopped in my tracks in front of a beautiful piece of artwork on our streets. That is why I was honored when I was asked to take photos of Zach DeBoer in front of his mural by Monk's Ale House. I enjoyed snapping a few photos while hearing about his inspiration (more on page 36). Another inspiring meeting was with this month's Meet the Creative, Carly Kewley. She spoke about things every up-and-coming designer needs to hear (check her out on page 68). Murals, sculptures, and design are all around us, and I'm so proud to use my skills to assist in sharing these designers' stories.

“
A lot of people reading this are probably like ‘archery is archery,’ but it’s not. What we have here is unique, in that we have all the archery disciplines.”
A Yankton native, Cull began work on a proposal to make Yankton home to the NFAA. In the beginning, the NFAA planned on just moving its offices to the area, but a grant awarded to the group by the Easton Foundation made it possible to build a plethora of shooting ranges. Construction started in 2008, and since then the facility has continued to expand. The archery center is the only place in the United States, and one of the few places in the world, with an Olympic-size indoor range.
18 |
“We have the Olympic arm, which is a flat field over 90 meters, which for those who don’t know is over a city block long,” said Cull. “It’s the only place in the United States where you can practice shooting at an Olympic length in a controlled environment.” In addition to its indoor ranges, the center has 145 acres of outdoor shooting experiences. “We have field ranges which are similar to a golf course. We have 28 targets of all different ranges. They are on the lay of the land, so you have to deal with uphill and downhill,” explained Cull. “Topography kind of dictates the difficulty of the ranges.”

FACT Recently, the Olympics named the center the largest archery center in the world. “To have the designation from World Archery, the Olympic body, that we are the world’s largest archery facility is pretty cool, and it means a lot to us. For Yankton, South Dakota that is unheard of,” he said. The center offers guests a wide variety of experiences from archery to trap shooting, indoor tennis courts, air rifle shooting, and more. “One of the biggest illusions we’ve had to overcome is that people think we are an Olympic training center and they can’t come here,” said Cull. “You can walk in with nothing, and you get some safety instructions and are able to have fun with the whole family.”
Despite being open to the public, in 2011 the Olympic and Paralympic archery teams trained at the facility prior to competing in the London Olympics. The center also hosts national and worldwide archery championships. In 2015, it hosted its first World Youth Archery Championships. “We had 50-some countries represented, and they were all minors, so there were a lot of things at stake. The people at World Archery liked the idea of how safe Yankton is because these are kids,” he said. The event spanned over 10 days and had almost 1,000 volunteers.

“
It really was a 'build it, and they will come' kind of thing.”
“The community is one of the biggest parts of making it work, and it has a big economic impact on the whole area,” explained Cull. Cull says that due to the sheer size of the archery center, the social distancing aspect of COVID-19 has been easy for them to address, but they’ve had issues looking at large events scheduled in the future. The center was scheduled to host the World Field Archery Championships in mid-September, though it has been postponed until 2022. According to a World Archery press release, a one-year postponement was rejected due to other postponements for next year, and the fact that the Hyundai World Archery Championships are scheduled to take place in Yankton in 2021.
24 |
“Fifty countries were scheduled to come, and we didn’t have embassies open yet, so people couldn't even go through the application process to get here,” recalled Cull. Growing up as an archer himself, Cull says his favorite aspect of the sport is the camaraderie. “It seems like an international way to bridge the gap between different cultures. When people are shooting a bow, they know they have some connection,” he said. “At least for a short time, that barrier can be broken.”

DEMPSEY’S PIZZA + BREWHÄUS by Alana Snyder If you’re in Watertown and you don’t stop by Dempsey’s Brewery Pub & Restaurant, you’re doing it wrong. Why? For one, owner and executive chef Sean Dempsey is South Dakota’s only certified Pizzaiola and is a member of the United States Pizza Team.
1023 S. MAIN ST., ABERDEEN
Need I say more? Well, I will. It’s one of the best, if not the best place for the most unique brick-oven pizzas (because did you just read what I said?!) and is the second oldest brewery in the state. On top of that, it has European medieval-inspired décor and incredible housemade root beer and cream soda. So you can imagine my delight when I heard a sister location, Danger von Dempsey’s Pizza & Brewhäus, was opening in Aberdeen last year. I finally had a chance to come by for an early lunch on a Friday, which made me feel totally okay with having an 11 a.m. beer (TGIF). But we’ll get to that.

“We’re pretty good at making some weird stuff.” - DEMPSEY ON THE KAMIKAZE
Dempsey greeted me and told me several times that, though he is the owner, general manager Michael Bacon is also an award-winning pizza chef. I was now even more thrilled. The inside was a quainter, 82-seat version of Dempsey’s, with flags hanging from the ceilings and vibrant “Dempsey green” walls. “We’ve got a cool little vibe, something that is different,” said Sean. “You walk in and it kind of blows you away because the outside of the building is a little rough and the inside is very bright and very colorful.” Though they opened in 2019, Sean reminded me that it was a long journey to open the doors. “We've been trying for a few years now to get this off the ground and kept running into roadblocks, so we were just excited to finally get it open,” he said.
28 |
I’ve known Sean for years, and it was very on brand that soon after that comment he talked about more projects, as he usually is on to the next thing. Some included his hot dog cart business (see side bar), a trip he was taking soon to Madison for a potential third Dempsey’s location, and plans for more windows at the front of the building and a patio at the Aberdeen location. When I asked him what they’re known for, he mentioned the Pizza of the Week (see side bar on page 32) and the Kamikaze, which is the “Chef ’s choice” for putting together whatever they feel like. It could be “normal,” it could come out of left field (note: they ask that you set parameters like “not fish” or “not spicy”). “We recently did a Proper Chicago pizza, which was basically a Chicago-style hot dog in a pizza,” explained Sean. “It’s basically just us coming around and doing things like, ‘How do we get ramen on a pizza, and how does that taste,’ and trying to combine the texture with the flavors. It’s a lot of experimentation.”

SPECIALTY PIZZAS » Earl of Wales He also mentioned that the team tries to make everything from scratch, like the French Onion Dip, which he brought out first. It’s a secret recipe (I get why) and was served with enough tandoori naan for a family. I was solo, so I did the best I could, which was scratching the surface. The fried onions were the cherry (or literally the fried onions) on top. Sean had also noted there were five salads on the menu and that everything was “fresh cut in the morning.” I tried the Atlas Grecian with tzatziki dollop, green bell peppers, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, artichoke hearts, black olives, and tandoori naan on a bed of greens. The menu said you can add chicken, but I have zero idea how you would fit it into the dish and why you would ruin how beautiful it already was as-is.

I tried a few pizzas, like the Green Haven with a bleu cheese base, sirloin steak, mushrooms, green peppers, tomatoes, applewood smoked bacon, and gorgonzola crumbles. The one that was the most different for me was the Portland with a roasted red pepper hummus base, broccoli florets, tomatoes, red onions, Peppadews, green peppers, mushrooms, and fresh mozzarella. Last, but not least, I ended my feasting with a Battle Axe Blue, which was more of a purple-hued craft beer. Hey, by then it was after 12 p.m.
BOTTOM LINE: I’ve been to Dempsey’s in Watertown and didn’t realize that maybe I was the one doing it wrong by not letting the talented team guide me to a crazy pizza experience. Also, I don’t think I can ever have grocery store French onion dip again. I’m a changed person.

These pizzas I speak of range in price, but some of the highest are $18. That’s nothing. And isn’t the storytelling aspect of eating ramen on a pizza priceless?
For the entire summer of 2020, the tomatoes I had with the dishes I tried were the reddest I had seen all season. The salad was one of the best I’ve had anywhere. And again… in regard to dips, I’m changed. In general, though, Dempsey’s pizza should be on everyone’s list to try as soon as possible.

Public Art embellishing the plains by Dawn Geertsema Murals of all varieties and colors continue to appear across South Dakota. Every mural, it seems, has a purpose, but no matter the original intention, each viewer may have their own interpretation.

The Black Hills: AN EVERCHANGING
The BHSU student murals were painted on multiple sections of parachute cloth before being later installed at their current location.

Perhaps one of the most recognizable public art displays in the state is Art Alley in Rapid City (pictured below). No two visits to the several blocks are the same, as the space is constantly seeing new artwork. With a permit from The Dahl Arts Center, any street artist can make a statement on the walls, making connections in the process. “There is definitely a community around it with particular artists who have worked there regularly,” said Katie Wolff, education coordinator at The Dahl. “It’s a space for people to connect with something that resonates with them.” Not far from Art Alley, Spearfish has art to offer, too. Black Hills State University (BHSU) students painted murals with the community’s help, learning valuable skills along the way (pictured above).
“I think in the end we calculated over 500 people had their hands in [the project] at some point,” said art professor Desy Schoenewies. “We learned how to talk to business owners all the way down to learning property and zoning rules.” Wolff, BHSU art intern and student at the time, says she was part of the process. “We based it around the layers of Spearfish and did that using all of the natural elements in the canyon, different types of wildflowers, the white buffalo for the Native American people,” she said. “That was kind of our design goal.” Schoenewies says that the group wanted to bring something lasting to Spearfish, but that the mural shouldn’t be permanent. “I hope someday somebody decides to paint over our mural and do something different,” she expressed. “Art in the public sphere should be transformative and [continuously] changing and evolving.”

“
It was just something to add beauty to what was then just a blacktop parking lot. It’s something to cause folks to slow down, something that makes that area a little more inviting than an empty parking lot.” -Zach DeBoer
Sioux Falls: BEYOND BEAUTIFICATION Last year, artist Zach DeBoer painted the “Greetings from Sioux Falls” mural, one of five murals he says were meant to “beautify the area” downtown. “It’s a very simplistic thing to just say that [murals] are pretty,” explained DeBoer. “Murals are an important part of placemaking, and they help tell the story and history of the place. They invite people in and make people feel comfortable and safe.” DeBoer says he feels that public art often makes a place more recognizable to visitors, making them realize, “I’m not just in any city. I’m not just in any strip mall. I’m in this place.”
40 |
The most recent mural DeBoer finished is on Monks Ale House, which is a depiction of a historic photo of a train that passed long ago. “Murals are great ways to activate and reactivate places,” he said. “They have a huge impact on the economy and people’s general well-being.” DeBoer also has painted murals in various other locations across the state, including Clear Lake, Huron, and Faulkton.

Faulkton: ELEVATING TOURISM Tourism is important for many small towns in South Dakota, and one of Faulkton’s biggest attractions is on the side of a grain elevator. It depicts photorealistic, larger-than-life people, with various hats blowing in the wind next to them. In 2018, Australian artist Guido van Helton finished the mural. “In terms of the financial impact, it’s just unbelievable the traffic we get through the town,” said project facilitator Dave Hedt, who is also from Australia. “We had a woman from Washington state fly all the way [here] just to see it.” According to Hedt, something special about van Helton’s murals is his artistic process. “Guido came and painted, and no one knew what he would paint,” recalled Hedt. “He lives in a community for four to six weeks before deciding what to paint based on how he feels the community is.” Hedt says that though van Helton never says exactly what his design represents, the community has their own interpretation. “The general consensus is that what he found in this community is that it takes a lot of people doing a lot of things to make small communities run,” explained Hedt. “People had to wear a lot of different hats to make the community go ‘round.”

Brookings: CULTURE IN BRUSH STROKES
Whether it be onto windows or even inside the library, the public art scene in Brookings is continuing to expand. “Brookings Public Art Commission has been very encouraging of what we're doing,” said Ashley Ragsdale, executive director of the Brookings Arts Council. “We want to create a hub where people want to go and look at the arts and culture downtown, but also want to shop, eat, and immerse [themselves] in the cultural life of Brookings.” The community and businesses alike have been behind the move, supporting the artwork and the process, according to Ragsdale. “As an artist as well, I think it's really cool to be able to pitch an idea and have full support from all parties involved,” explained Ashley Biggar, director of Downtown Brookings and member of the Brookings Public Arts Commission. “It's very inviting to be innovative in Brookings.”
“
I’ve been putting up murals on businesses windows all over Brookings. It’s a part of my initiative during COVID-19 just to spread joy and positivity to passersby in a time we can’t be together.” -Ashley Biggar
And they say the community has been enjoying the art. Many people stop to take pictures in front of it, featuring it on social media with various associated hashtags. “It’s great exposure for us,” said Ragsdale. “It’s public art, which makes our downtown even better, and we love being able to give artists the opportunity to express themselves here in Brookings.”

Vermillion: RESTORE AND CONNECT Behind the Coyote Twin Theater in Vermillion, bright colors bring together elements of a two-part mural starting with a woman in front of the night sky looking over an abstract South Dakota landscape.
“The artists would lead and guide workshops with the community to see what they wanted portrayed, and then translate that through their creative and artistic lens,” said Hansen. And after many discussions, the collage came together.
Front and center on the adjacent wall is an indigenous woman nursing two babies. She floats above a banner written in the Lakota language that lead artist Reyna Hernandez says reads Eunkíčhetupi, meaning “We are restored.”
“What started to happen is we started to tell the Sioux creation story with the images we were putting together,” said Hernandez. “It was really cool because it wasn’t intentional, but it became very universal.”
Hernandez says she met with many partners and the community to come up with the concept for the mural, hoping to tell the story of the human experience.
Hernandez says she wanted to ensure that no one was left out of the story. For her, part of that representation was to bring women into the conversation.
“People were talking a lot about restoration, and we thought about that in terms of how indigenous people have been fighting for this restoration of culture and a restoration of an accurate history and who we are,” explained Hernandez. Connections between the community and art was the focus of the mural, according to project facilitator Amber Hansen.
44 |
“I know how it feels to not see myself represented in things,” explained Hernandez. “As soon as we put the images together, it started to tell our own story. It was like it all connected.”

A Splash of Color From a simple concept to the final product on a wall, it seems murals can’t be ignored. In many ways, public art is bringing more colors to the places it appears. And as a result, people are slowing down to take in the art that is now, more than ever, a part of South Dakotan culture. Whether a mural represents something grand to its viewers or it simply makes a good background for a picture, each one that goes up makes an impact on the community around it in one way or another. +

“The Alfredo is [general manager] Roxie Stanga’s homemade recipe for the sauce, and it has a white wine in it, and it’s absolutely delicious,” she said. Speaking of pasta and burgers, the macaroni has been a bestseller, and the two have been combined for the Mac Attack, which is a one-third pound cheeseburger topped with homemade mac and cheese. The Shrimp Tacos have also been a hit. “[The Shrimp Tacos] are by far one of my favorites, because it’s something new,” said Andrea. “We started out with all smoked meats, and the tacos are something completely different. A Homestead Brew ahomesteadbrew.com by Dawn Geertsema “We’re a farmhouse, field-to-glass brewery,” said owner Lee Anderson. “It’s trying to grow as many things as I possibly can. I won’t brew it unless there’s at least something that I grew in it.” At A Homestead Brew in Valley Springs, there are countless fruit trees and plants, such as blackberries, raspberries, and peaches to focus on its hops-focused brewing. "You’re literally just capturing something so fresh,” said Anderson. “You can see us grow it, process it, and brew it all on site.” By searching #grew2brew on social media, you can find many events the brewery hosts (i.e. food trucks, beer and food pairing dinners, hot air balloon launches) and watch the process from start to finish. He also offers the opportunity for groups like wedding parties to experience the brewing with private events (and even help with a oneoff brew). Anderson says his favorite parts of brewing are the extra efforts that he feels make his beers different. “When you pick up the product, you feel good about it,” explained Anderson. “[On our social media,] you can see my hard work, crawling around in a field, me brewing it. I don’t have to brew in the middle of the night, but I choose to. I don’t have to brew outside in lightning storms, but it’s fun.” He says he also enjoys spontaneous fermentation with wild yeast and microflora under the stars. The brewery is located where Anderson says his ancestors staked claim on an original homestead in 1882. “We’ve got the original claim shack that my grandpa was born in,” he said. “We took all of that barnwood off of there and installed it in the taproom.” Alongside pieces of Anderson’s history, there are modern elements in the taproom as well, including chandeliers hanging from the walls as well as granite, marble, and glass features. The taproom offers 10 tap beers and about 17 bottled options. Certain Homestead beers are also distributed throughout the state in stores like Hy-Vee.
Taproom Hours: Friday
5-9 p.m.
Saturday 2-9 p.m.
“A lot of these beers that we’re doing are single-barrel one-offs,” said Anderson. “In the time it takes me to make 3,000 glasses, I can make a couple hundred and put more work into that. That’s where I’m interested — how many ingredients can I grow organically to put into this. That’s where I get the joy in it.”

Pink
Prairie
House
by Dawn Geertsema “I have always loved old houses, and having a brother in construction made this dream of flipping an old home our reality,” said elementary art teacher and homeowner Staci Simons. In 2018, Staci and her husband Kyle, the associate director of admissions at the University of Sioux Falls, moved their young family from their first house in Sioux Falls to a 1920s fixer upper in Dell Rapids.
Small-Town Feel -
The End of an Era
Staci says that after being a substitute teacher in Sioux Falls, she didn’t want to send her children to school with larger class sizes. “I like knowing the people I work with and just knowing the town,” said Staci, explaining why she wanted to send her daughters to the elementary school where she currently works. Originally from Watertown, Staci had no trouble moving to Dell Rapids. But for Kyle, she said, it was a different story. “It was hard for my husband to move here because it’s so small, and Colorado Springs {where Kyle grew up] is so big,” said Staci. “But he loves living here, just the quietness.” According to Staci, the location is perfect for daughters Sage, 4, and Rory, 2, who have plenty of space to play in the yard.
Though the three-bedroom home was originally built closer to downtown, it was moved to its current location in the 1970s and now has about 2,000 square feet. “We knew we wanted an older home,” explained Staci, “so we feel really lucky that it’s an old house transplanted in a newer neighborhood where the families are younger. It all lined up and felt like the right fit.” And so they got to work on renovations with the help of Staci’s brother, Jordan Spilde. Staci says that when they bought the house, the stairs were unreasonably steep, and that was a big negative for the Simonses. With Spilde’s assistance, they were able to redesign the staircase to make it more functional.

HOME + LIVING
They redid the entire kitchen, ripping out a wall dividing the kitchen and dining space to start. With the wall gone, they had plenty of space to build an island and design the space to fit them and their modern, eclectic style. “It’s my dream kitchen, and we finally got to do it,” stressed Staci. Mimicking their mother’s sleek kitchen, Sage and Rory have a play kitchen in the dining room that Spilde built out of an old entertainment center. “Do you like your kitchen the best?” Staci asked, looking down at Sage and Rory who were hiding by her legs. “Yes,” they nodded shyly.
Artistry in the Accents Throughout the home, there are many furnishings that Staci and her family members have acquired through gifts, thrifted, DIY’d, or repurposed to fit each space. From the floral chairs in the living room to the china cabinet in the dining room, Staci has created an environment that integrates many different design styles. She also has her art featured in a few places, including brush-stroke flowers in her master closet and a wall of hand-painted hash marks in the basement.
“My husband and I did the kitchen backsplash, which is why it has a lot of character. And those shelves [by the range] were just a board that was left in the garage.” - Staci One of the family’s newest projects is their front porch. Welcoming guests to the Simons’ home, the spacious porch features twinkle lights, succulents on the stairs, and a sturdy porch swing.
STACI’S BUDGET-FRIENDLY HOUSE FLIPPING TIPS: 1.
Search thrift stores, garage sales, and Facebook Marketplace.
2.
If you have a handy person in your life or you can do the work yourself, you’ll save a lot of money.

“I built it.” Staci paused before admitting, “Well, it came in all the pieces, and my husband was working. I was like, you know what, I’m not going to wait for him, I’m just gonna do it.”
“We’re actually not going to do any more big projects for a while,” said Staci. “Someday when the girls are older, we’ll have a better idea of what we want the basement to be like.”
Once the exterior was completed, Staci was able to convince Kyle that the front and back doors needed to be pink.
But for now, Staci says her family is content in their cozy home on the prairie, nestled happily between the pastel pink doors.

Carly Kewley by Molly Sperlich Carly Kewley considers herself a “solopreneur.” After the birth of her second child, Kewley says she struggled with postpartum depression. This led her to pursue a new avenue and launch her graphic design and brand development company, CK Design, to “extend conversations and shine a light on others who want to share their voices and dreams.” 605 spoke with Kewley about the importance of brand building, and how she juggles running a business and life.

Building your personal or business brand is important because… it’s your story. But before delving too
far into that, branding gets thrown around a lot these days and tends to get watered down. So for anyone new to branding and wanting to grasp it more, it’s deep. It’s not ‘just a logo,’ a website, a color palette, content, or pictures. It’s an experience, and it’s a story. If your business was a person, the bones and wiring would be the structure of how it functions. The hobbies, conversations, interests, clothes they wear, music they listen to—that’s the personality. That’s the brand. It’s an experience. It’s a story. It’s ever-evolving.
70 |
The most important aspects of creating a brand are… focus, goal setting, purpose, and clarity. Without either of
those things, you’re lacking a foundation. You can’t build a business or an empire on a weak foundation.
I started CK Design because… when I was running [my first
company] ArtByCarly, I was doing everything under the sun that I was passionate about—wedding photography, family photos, logo design, custom art, and my own original art. It grew so fast and I had such a lack of focus on [one service] that it got overwhelming. Was I a wedding photographer or a logo and website designer? (continued on page 72...)

In short, both; but it forced a fork in the road that created pause for my viewers. Not only that, it was hard for me to even describe what I did. I didn’t have a one-sentence elevator pitch. I learned the importance and value of narrowing your niche and focus.
My favorite thing to photograph is… my family. I love taking pictures of my daughters and my husband when he lets me.
I find balance between work and everyday life by… not working on the weekends and trying really hard to create boundaries of not working after 5:30 p.m.
My favorite thing about running my own business is... the freedom and ability to scale it how I want.
The most difficult thing about running my own business is… letting go and learning to outsource. 72 |

A recent project I’m proud of is… I recently teamed up with
[local business] wäke to raise awareness to a nonprofit organization called SocialWorks. Watching the protests and riots stirred some deep movement in me. I wanted to find a way to support a black-owned local business, amplify their voice, and create an opportunity for others to do the same. I’m still learning and relearning, so I didn’t feel that I had a place to really share or vocalize much without being ignorant or sloppy. wäke and I teamed up to create a fundraiser for SocialWorks, and with every donation, [donors] were gifted a set of Canva templates—10 stories, 10 squares—all branded for wäke and SocialWorks to highlight their work. They were all created for customization for anyone to share their story.

Where The Child things are
MOVING IN by Kyle Determan
For some reason or another, Reid and I always pack as much into one month out of the year as humanly possible. This year it was August, and as if finishing graduate school, adjusting to life with a 2 year old, and higher UPS demands because of COVID-19 weren’t enough, we thought buying and moving into a new house would be fun… 88 |
605MAGAZINE.COM
LIFESTYLE
I’m totally kidding—no one ever thinks moving is fun, because it isn’t. It’s the worst.
As frustrating and laborious as finding the house was, we had no idea that the next couple of steps would really be the challenge.
The boxes, the tape guns, and the overwhelming scent of Sharpie that fills the dust-filled air are enough to bring anyone’s spirits down. Add a cranky toddler, and it’s the perfect recipe for a multiple-breakdown fiasco.
Besides paperwork, insurance, and countless calls to and from banks, the idea that we had to move our entire house to another house was a little daunting, especially considering we're going down in square footage.
We had been looking for a new house for a while, and when we finally found one within our price range and with a great backyard, we moved as quick as we could to make it ours.
Even more of an issue? Figuring out the best way to transition Sloan from one house to another without making her feel lost or confused.
Let’s just say a global pandemic has worked wonders for the housing market.
While we've shown her pictures of the house and pointed out where certain things will go, I don’t think she'll really understand until our first night there, when she has to sleep in a brand-new room.
T H E A R T + D E S I G N I S S U E september 2020
LIFESTYLE
Then comes the question of how. How do we make this as seamless as possible? How do we create a space for her that makes her feel at home? I started with the packing process itself. Sloan helped put books in boxes, she colored on one side while we labeled the other, and she “helped” organize our “keep” and “throw” piles. Deciding to take little pieces from her room every day allowed her to still feel like she had a space and allowed me to focus on other aspects of the house. I was really worried about her feeling out of control and anxious with so much of her daily life packed away, but as always, she blew me away with her adaptability and calmness. My Pinterest board is filled with all of these brand-new ideas and concepts for the new place, but after completely planning Sloan’s new room in my head, I realized that keeping her room the same for the time being makes the most sense for both of us.

WHAT I’VE
LEARNED
1
Pack boxes by items, not rooms. Don’t limit your inner interior designer by assigning your stuff to their old spaces. Maybe your books will be in your living room and not your den, and that’s okay.
2
Markers are a kid’s best friend. Sloan was really into our permanent markers, so by giving her her own set, she was able to “label” her boxes how she saw fit.
3
Always pack dÉcor first. Your walls may look naked, but it’s better than scrambling to find your work clothes in a sea of already-taped boxes.
T H E A R T + D E S I G N I S S U E september 2020
Not only does that take a project off of my list, but it allows her to associate a room she knows and loves with a new, and potentially scary, place. Change is scary for everyone, but it can be especially daunting if you're 2 and don’t understand why your house suddenly looks, smells, and feels different. A place where she is always supposed to feel warm and safe in is suddenly new, and acknowledging that has really helped me understand my own anxiety toward the moving process. While things will be new and different, there's nothing that says it also has to be scary.
94 |
Sloan will play with her cars no matter where they are. She’ll still find comfort in her blankets and stuffed animals because they haven’t changed. She’ll still look to Reid and I and feel at home. Everyone is apprehensive when it comes to moving, and even more so when the move includes other people. Switching the emphasis from the house itself to the experiences that may come from it is a surefire way to realize that home is where you feel loved, not the address you give to Jimmy John's for delivery. I’ll take a Turkey Tom, by the way.+

Diana Behl 605 PROFILE
by Dawn Geertsema
Based in Brookings, Diana Behl works with traditional and other forms of printmaking. She’s an associate professor and studio art program coordinator at South Dakota State University, and the artist says the best part of living and working in South Dakota is learning countless things from her students. Behl opens up about her pieces, her green thumb, and offers advice for aspiring artists.
Check out some of Behl’s art at the South Dakota Art Museum.
96 |
What's your favorite art medium to work with? My work is rooted in printmaking processes, such as intaglio and relief. I love working in the print studio with copper plates, linoleum, and hand-set type. I combine these processes with collage and drawing to create colorful and layered mixed media works on paper.
Where are your favorite places to grab a bite or drink in Brookings? I enjoy a pour-over from Kool Beans [Coffee & Roasterie], or a Sidecar cocktail from The Pheasant [Restaurant & Lounge]. Both are an indulgent comfort and are made even better when I get to chat with friends there.
Where's your favorite place to go for inspiration? The “everyday” is an important theme in my art, and inspiration is found in all aspects of my ordinary day-today. It's discovered on walks in my neighborhood, while visiting new places, within the things I read and listen to, or the observations made in my home, garden, or studio.
What would you tell an aspiring artist who’s in a funk? A vital aspect of an art practice is developing perseverance and selfreflection. Making art uses many different skills, and it's always helpful to step away and engage in another activity where the stakes don’t seem so high—cooking, biking, taking photographs, visiting the library, laughing, and listening to music and podcasts. Use these activities to help bring new perspectives into your work and ideas. Then try again to find a place of joy in making, or approach your task from a different angle.
What do you love about the South Dakota art scene, and what do you think the scene needs more of? I'm grateful for the community I have met through Ipso Gallery [in Sioux Falls] and the South Dakota Art Museum [in Brookings]. Both have made me feel at home in South Dakota, have supported my work, and have introduced me to new people and ideas. I would like to see this kind of support and visibility continue to expand in the state to create an encouraging, inclusive place for artists to make and share their work.
