BEST NEIGHBORHOOD RESTAURANT: MATT THE MILLER’S TAVERN Matt The Miller’s Tavern is a place where you can find some of your favorite dishes done with a twist. Instead of just nachos, you’ll be diving into ahi poke nachos served with a Guiness-soy reduction and wasabi aioli. It’s the little added flairs that elevate this tavern food beyond your typical pub, and part of
the reason why Matt The Miller’s has become so popular for Dublin residents. Coming in at a close second is Local Roots with its contemporary feel, locally-sourced American favorites, and live entertainment. Did we mention they offer happy hour seven days a week? 101 Beer Kitchen snuck in at third place for its warm service and consistently good eats.
BEST NEIGHBORHOOD BAR: VASO This winter, VASO wowed us with climate-controlled rooftop igloos. But through the warmer months, VASO continues to impress with its inventive and expertly-executed menu of cocktails, stunning views of downtown Dublin, and Instagrammable opportunities at every turn. See for yourself why VASO is the best time you can have drinking on a roof, no matter the season. As much as Dublin can appreciate an upscale drinking experience, it can get down with a more approachable one, too. Bogey Inn slid into silver after winning over the livers of boozehounds, especially during Memorial Tournament time. Local Roots made another appearance as Dublin’s third best bar according to the drinking public.

Fall 2019
ou may overlook Dublin, Ohio as a destination to explore if you’re not a golfer or a country club socialite, but we promise there is much more to Ohio’s Emerald City than golf polos, soccer moms, and roundabouts (be careful, they’re everywhere up there). Take our advice, Dublin is becoming one of the next best destinations for food, entertainment, and off campus drinking. In addition, countless parks, outdoor events, and sightseeing opportunities give this enormous Columbus suburb its own personality worthy of your time this summer. Head into Old Dublin on a sunny day to walk beneath the trees as you head towards the waterfalls at Indian Run Falls. You’ll find these peaceful and secluded walking paths provide more than enough separation from the chaos of city life. After enjoying your stroll, stop by Dublin’s Jeni’s ice cream location which is just a quick walk from the falls, or grab a table at Mr. Sushi for fresh seafood and a great happy hour. Sushi not your style? Not a problem. Old Dublin has other favorites all within walking distance like Harvest Pizzeria or Brazenhead.

If you’re in the mood for something more upscale, head across the river to Dublin’s newest dining, retail, and residential location known as the Bridge Street District. This “urbanburb” has transformed a former driving range into a haven for our generation. Growing every week with new stores and places to eat, Bridge Street has already become the perfect place to spend an evening in Dublin. Head over to Cap City Diner, a brand new location for one the best of Cameron Mitchell’s dining experiences. Keep the classy vibe going with cocktails at the AC Lounge, the swanky
H A RV E ST P I ZZ E R I A
hotel bar located on the ground floor, or head on up to VASO, a rooftop bar that sits eight stories up and overlooks the entire district. Of course, it'll be hard to ignore all of the noise and fun you hear from the new PiNS Mechanical Bar and it’s just a short walk away. If you decide to venture deeper into the city, Napa Kitchen + Bar is a quiet and authentic Italian restaurant that promises to serve you a meal you won’t forget. Just off of the highway, Flannagan’s remains one of Dublin’s favorite places to drink and listen to live music.
COLUMBUS ZOO & AQUARIUM
As with any city, there’s much more than the food that makes it worth visiting. We’ll assume that if you’re into golf you already know your way around the country clubs and won’t waste our time recommending places to play. While it may not come to mind as top place to visit, the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium has been an excellent place to spend the day with family and friends. Winning countless awards over the years, Columbus’ zoo is an easy thing for us to take for granted if we have grown up going as kids, but if you haven’t been recently or have never been then we advise you bump this up to the top of your to-do list this summer. Field of Corn
Celebrates 25 years 34
DUBLIN
Fall 2019
O
n August 28, 2019, one of Dublin’s most iconic public art installations celebrated its 25th anniversary.
The work titled “Field of Corn (with Osage Oranges)” was the third project in the Dublin Art Council’s Art in Public Places program. Located on Rings road, the sculpture consists of 109 “human-sized” (6 ft. 3 in. or 1.9 m) concrete ears of corn that stand upright in orderly rows. The field itself was once farmed by Sam Frantz, a leader in the use of hybridized corn. The artwork seeks to honor the city of Dublin’s farming legacy, while also memorializing rural landscapes. With help from the Dublin Historical Society, the site of the work was later named Frantz Park. In order to develop a significant work of art for the small park, which was owned by the City of Dublin, the Dublin Art in Public
Places program of the Dublin Arts Council commissioned the work through a juried competition. Of the many proposals the council considered, the project brought forth by Columbus, Ohio artist Malcolm Cochran, a professor of sculpture at the Ohio State University, was ultimately chosen. Cochran first visited the site of his newlycommissioned art installation in July of 1993. He was inspired to honor the not-so-distant farming past of the location when he noticed a short row of mature Osage Orange trees, which at one time, would have extended for miles along the property. Once his proposal was accepted, Cochran got to work on manufacturing the individual pieces of corn that make up the installation. Initially, three full-sized prototype “ears” were created—each with different kernel patterns—from which molds were made. The final pieces were then constructed cast using
white architectural concrete. Each finished ear of corn weighs 1500 lbs. The casting process took place at a concrete manufacturer in Georgia, and the ears were delivered to Ohio in four truckloads prior to installation. Once in place, the ears were individually oriented to create the illusion that no two pieces are exactly alike. Field of Corn (with Osage Oranges) was dedicated Oct. 30, 1994. To celebrate its 25th anniversary, Dublin Arts Council Executive Director David S. Guion announced that the public is invited to a “birthday party” celebration on Saturday, Sept. 28 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the site of the work. The artist will be on hand during the free, all-ages celebration, and food and beverages will be available for purchase.

Ohio State’s Veterinary Medical Center adds specialty eye services to Dublin facility

A
s of July 16, the Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) in Dublin offers pets in need of specialty eye care greater access to board-certified, veterinary ophthalmologists, due to the expansion of the Comparative Ophthalmology service beyond our campus location to our Dublin facility. This addition complements the recently expanded orthopedic surgery service within the Dublin medical center. Until recently, non-emergency ophthalmology appointments at main campus have been booked nearly four months out, says Dr. Eric Miller, clinical assistant professor of Comparative Ophthalmology. “With eye cases, you never really know how serious the problem is until you evaluate, and since you don’t know, you can’t wait,” he says. “People appreciate our quality of patient care and client service, so our busy caseload is in large part due to word of mouth,” says Dr. Anne Metzler, professor and ophthalmology service head. The Comparative Ophthalmology service at the VMC-Dublin will have two appointment days — Tuesday and Wednesday — allowing up to 15 cases to be seen each day, by one of our board-certified ophthalmologists, a registered veterinary technician
(RVT) and veterinary assistant. “Expanding our initial exam services to the Dublin facility enables us to accommodate more surgeries at our campus location, improving service for all clients and their pets,” says Dr. Miller. The addition of a third, board-certified ophthalmologist in late 2018 — Dr. Georgina Newbold — makes this expanded access possible. The service team, which also includes three residents and three technicians, agrees this change will help expedite more cases. “We do better when we get the cases earlier,” adds Dr. Miller. “Vision and comfort is our motto.” The Ophthalmology service at Dublin will operate on an outpatient basis, with appointments for a variety of common conditions, including corneal ulcers, dry eye and glaucoma. Emergency services and surgeries will continue to be scheduled at the campus location. Dom Tiberi promotes safer driving through Maria’s Message

fter Dom Tiberi received an earlymorning visit from the police six years ago this September to tell him the devasting news of his daughter Maria’s fatal car accident, the Dublin resident and 10TVWBNS sports anchor has been on a neverending mission. Maria’s Message is Tiberi’s quest to return cars to what they once were: a form of transportation, rather than mobile offices or entertainment centers that provide drivers with endless distractions. While it has never been determined exactly what diverted Maria’s attention from the road, experts concluded that she did not apply the brakes as she hit a semi that was stopped in traffic. She was traveling the speed limit and wearing a seat belt. Tiberi brings Maria’s Message to high school and college audiences, speaking to a range of driving habits from texting to drinking to applying makeup—anything that steals focus from the task at hand. For young people with lots on their minds and the tendency
to juggle many activities at once, distracted driving is a matter of life or death. The U.S. government reports that 27% of distracted drivers in fatal car crashes are in their 20s. Taking a parent’s perspective, Maria’s Message encourages young people to become defensive drivers and to take a safe driving pledge. Tiberi has reached over 80,000 young people with Maria’s Message. Through various fundraisers, The Maria Tiberi Foundation has purchased over 40 driving simulators, mostly for law enforcement, including the Dublin Police Department. The simulators take drivers through a range of realistic driving distractions to demonstrate the difficulties of multitasking on the road. Many of the simulators are used at outreach events. For his efforts to use technology to make a difference, Dublin Mayor Greg Peterson named Tiberi a STEM Star as part of the STEM Star Award program started by COSI.
The program honors everyday people who use science, technology, engineering, and math to better their communities. The simulators will be followed by driving schools, one near the Tiberi’s home city of Dublin, and another near OSU where Maria attended college and was studying to be a graphic designer. The schools are projected to reach 2,500 drivers each year as part of distracted driving preventative education. In addition to funding driver education, The Maria Tiberi Foundation also sponsors a $1000 scholarship for a Dublin Coffman student intending to major in the Media and Graphic Arts fields.
The 2019 Maria’s Walk will take place at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium on September 14. Visit mariatiberifoundation.org.
