Award-winning food and attention demanding decor define Asterisk, one of Uptown’s cornerstone eateries

One of the truest ways to understand the culture of a place while traveling is through food. Restaurants are an extension of the people behind them, and in the case of Asterisk Supper Club and owner Megan Ada, even her weird and whimsical side is shining on full display.

Featuring floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, a plethora of darkfinished wood and a dramatic crystal chandelier, the eatery that was launched by Ada in 2016 definitely looks the part of a quirky but quality supper club, and there’s much more where that came from.

The interior–which was actually designed by Ada’s mother, Laurie–feels as much like a chic restaurant as it does a Victorian drawing room, bolstered by ornate lamp fixtures and patterned wallpaper.

The unique Uptown eatery does more than just evoke the past however, Asterisk recreates it.

Breaking the supper club mold, the eatery offers designated teatime hours (12-4 p.m., Wednesday-Sunday), where diners can sip a variety of culinary teas alongside scones, sandwiches and more. In line with Asterisk’s expressive interior, its tea cups and saucers also stand out in unique fashion.

“We collect mismatching tea cups, saucers, plates etc from thrift stores. We even get tea set donations from guests who want to see their loved ones that may have passed away put to good use,” Ada said. “It's special because when they dine with us, they're able to see these memories come to life.”

While Asterisk doubles as a new-age teahouse during the day, this doesn’t diminish the Uptown Westerville spot’s ability to entertain on an evening out. Billed as “exclusive, but inclusive,” the eatery serves upscale American comfort food and craft cocktails.

With simple entree names–dishes are titled Steak, Pot Pie, Meatloaf or Tuna–Asterisk makes its name

creating delicious, upscale versions of foods we all know and love. Its Lamb Chops, for example, are crusted in coriander and served on a ginger carrot puree alongside spiced cabbage and peas; its Scallops are served alongside a butternut rosemary risotto, anchovy orange and caper agrodulce.

And once you’re done taking in Asterisk’s one of a kind vibes and truly gourmet offerings, wind down with one of three simple, delicious desserts (Chocolate Tort, Apple Pie and Christie’s Butter Cake) alongside one of their craft cocktails from an eclectic menu. It promises an evening, like the restaurant itself, that’s familiar, unique and lovably quirky.

Your guide to breakfast, lunch and dinner outside in Westerville

Now that warmer weather has arrived, you can have the pleasure of diving into exciting new restaurants, all while taking in some sunshine and fresh air. The city of Westerville has no shortage of outdoor dining options, and we’ve put together some of our top picks.

Java Central Cafe & Roaster Sunny Street Cafe

If you’re starting your day with coffee and a light breakfast, Java Central Cafe & Roaster (20 S. State St.) is hard to beat. Just about any coffee-based drink you can imagine, smoothies, baked goods and even egg dishes and bagel sandwiches are offered. The outdoor seating is limited, but it makes up for lack of size with plenty of charm situated on an all-brick walkway within the beating heart of Uptown.

Looking for a breakfast that’s on the heartier side? Sunny Street Cafe (644 N. State St.) is a central Ohio chain that’s expanded to multiple other states in the eastern U.S., and for good reason. This from-scratch kitchen serves up everything from breakfast quesadillas to chicken and waffles, and its outdoor patio–complete with tasteful planters and bright-yellow umbrellas–is easy on the eyes as well.

Uptown Deli & Brew

A sizable patio and secluded biergarten with plenty of umbrellas when the summer sun is too much: That’s what you’ll find at Uptown Deli & Brew (41 N. State St.), which also happens to be the site of Westerville’s first brewery, Temperance Row Brewing Company. This Westerville restaurant and brewery is also a part of the Columbus Ale Trail, which you can learn more about here.

Jimmy V’s Grill & Pub

Another casual spot perfect for Lunch in Uptown Westerville, Jimmy V’s Grill & Pub (1 S. State St.) offers not only an expansive stone patio with abundant flowers and potted plants, the eatery’s outdoor space also abuts South State Street in the center of Uptown, so you can have a first-hand view for the lively hustle and bustle, and even take advantage of Westerville’s Uptown DORA.

For a truly delicious, and truly entertaining, outdoor dinner, Giammarco’s Italian Restaurant (6030 Chandler Ct) is hard to beat. You can grab a variety of traditional Sicilian dishes, pasta, and hearty pizzas, all on one of the liveliest p atios in the Columbus area. Regulation bocce ball courts, plenty of live music, and even full-roof rain coverage await.

This lake-house themed hotel (409 Altair Pkwy.), offers guests a little piece of lakefront cabin life in the city. The hotel boasts a sizable outdoor space for diners featuring a medley of lawn games, seating and fire pits. It’s even situated on a small body of water itself.

Giammarco’s Italian Restaurant The Two-One Barrel & Boar

With warmer weather here, Barrel & Boar (8 N State St) offers lunch and dinner service outdoors under chic string-bulb lighting. Found out back of the restaurant, visitors will often enjoy live music on their vibrant patio. Enter through the main entrance on State Street or off of E. College Avenue.

DINING BY DIRECTION

Uptown

When in Uptown, start your day off right at Northstar Café, where ethics in sourcing is as important as quality. New Westerville studio

Uptown Art & Clay

reinvents the paint & sip format with a pinch of childhood whimsy

What do garden gnomes, sushi dishes, and decorative jars all have in common?

Uptown Art & Clay, of course.

The exciting new Uptown spot— which officially opened its doors at the end of March 2022–provides a fun new riff on the ever-popular Paint & Sip format, allowing artistically-inclined individuals the chance to create their own, free-standing art pieces and functional sculptures, from ages six and up.

For owner Sylvana Whittaker, who was teaching painting before COVID-19 hit, it was the pandemic that pushed the longtime central Ohio artist to take a chance and go out on her own.

“Before the pandemic hit I started teaching painting at another studio, and wine and paint nights became an even bigger thing. I thought it was such a great idea for artists to make money, she said. After the pandemic, they closed down and I started thinking why don't I just do it myself, and why don't I do it with clay.”

To Whittaker, who was herself hooked on pottery three decades following a lecture about the ritual Japanese firing process of Raku, one of the best ways to engage potential new artists is by swapping out an ageold piece of ceramic gear: the pottery wheel.

Guests to Uptown Art & Clay participate in any number of “Create & Sip” events, which typically run for 2.5 hours, building any number of items— such as coiled bowls, bird feeders and platters—using just their hands.

According to Whittaker, this lessens the barriers to entry for beginners, and it also leads to the creation of objects she finds more expressive and interesting.

Today, one of Uptown Art & Clay’s most popular classes actually began as an offering for kids only, before being brought back by popular demand.

“I was doing a Spring Gnomes class for kids, but kept getting adults who wanted to make them, too,” she said. “And today it’s my most popular adult class.”

You can check out Whittaker’s eclectic class list—which offers events for all ages and occasions—on Uptown Art & Clay’s website, and purchase tickets for any of them. Classes typically start at $45.

The Suite Life

The Renaissance Columbus Westerville-Polaris Hotel offers amenities, top-tier dining alongside relaxed lakefront vibes

At a glance, the Renaissance Columbus Westerville-Polaris Hotel might look like so many other chic, recently-opened hotels of its kind. But it doesn't take long to see what sets it apart once you step inside.

From turtle shell lights, to decorative boat buoys and even a pool with specially-painted walls meant to mimic the color lake water, the Renaissance Columbus Westerville-Polaris feels as much like a modern family cabin as it does a five year-old hotel.

“People are often surprised by this, but almost all Renaissance hotels have have a theme, and they’re usually indigenous to the local area,” general manager Ralph Mordocco said. “This hotel has a modern lake

house or nautical theme to it.”

The hotel’s proximity to Alum Creek and the Hoover Reservoir inspired its designers to embrace the modern lake house theme throughout the building. This means all of the hotel’s 222 rooms, its amenities, and even its high-end event space that can accommodate everything from weddings to corporate events.

The Two-One, the signature restaurant of the Renaissance Westerville-Polaris, features a full outdoor space with laid back patio games, fire pits and even a small body of water, all contributing to its bonafide “day at the lake” vibes, according to Mordocco.

The eatery, which features a full slate of comfort food classics done with a culinary flare, takes its name after a piece of Westerville history as well. The Two-One is named after the 21st amendment, which criminalized alcohol and launched Prohibition.

“Working through menu and beverage ideas, we always want to find a way to tie things back to Westerville and its history,” Mordocco said.

And even though the restaurant was inspired by the law that forbade alcoholic drinks, the Two-One is a fantastic spot to grab a cocktail or two, anchored by its creative cocktail program, which features its own 2022 private barrel selection from whiskey-maker Russel’s Reserve. The Two-One was one of only six Ohio establishments to receive this prestigious private barrel opportunity, which was personally created by and even branded with the eatery’s name.

In fact, the first thing you’re likely to notice when you walk into the lobby of this Westerville hotel is its lively and engaging bar. And according to Mordocco, this is intentional.

“The center point of the lobby is the main bar of the Two-One, and that’s kind of the Renaissance’s theme, we focus hotels on beverage and food, versus food and beverage, which is what you normally see,” he said. “Having our bar in such a central location creates an environment where people can come down, work in the lobby, eat, drink and socialize if you want to. It’s all available.”

Lofty Expectations

The Aloft Columbus Westerville Hotel boasts an enticing aesthetic, lively social spaces and much more

The decor at the Aloft Columbus Westerville Hotel may be minimalist, but don’t let that fool you: This sleek accommodation is packed with attractions, and located nearby Uptown Westerville.

The 101-room hotel, which opened in early 2018, is located along Westerville’s southern gateway, at 32 Heatherdown Dr. The hotel, situated on a 2.6 acre parcel of land, is one of the first sights of the city that many visitors catch, and that’s definitely not a bad thing.

Lovers of the arts and the fashionforward will feel right at home in the chic new hotel, which boasts a refined, and totally comprehensive, look and feel. The polished aesthetic visible from a quick glance at its exterior–complete with a handful of bright blue neon streaks across its facade–are cohesively carried throughout the hotel.

Bold colors, eye-grabbing patterns and a host of unique textures bring the hotel’s minimalist charm together, alongside the addition of truly unusual (and weirdly wonderful) shelving systems and bookcases.

The sleek Aloft Columbus Westerville is more than just a pretty face, however.

The south Westerville hotel also features a fitness center, free coffee and tea, plenty of kid-friendly activities and sustainable amenities. This comes in addition to its luxurious indoor pool, which is heated and complemented by beautiful wooden cross beams on the ceiling and horizontal wood paneling.

When all that swimming works up an appetite, head down to the swanky WXYZ Bar, which features a lively spot for cocktails, wine and beer alongside a variety of snacks. And while you’re

likely there grabbing a nightcap or nursing a few craft cocktails, you can also enjoy the unexpectedly vivacious atmosphere the bar boasts.

This is in large part due to the music. The hotel hosts a wide variety of live performances from talented local and national musicians. What’s more, these evenings (which you can keep up with on the hotel’s social media pages) are free to attend, and welcome to locals, meaning you can rub elbows with residents and other hotel guests alike.

Premium movie channels can boost your experience if you choose to stick around the room, and the Aloft Columbus Westerville’s location, just a short drive from hubs like Easton Town Center, Polaris Fashion Place and Downtown Columbus, mean the entire Columbus area is at your fingertips as well.

Westerville Adjacent

Just like Polaris, Easton Town Center has become a hub for local dining and entertainment.

Less than ten minutes from Uptown Westerville is one of central’s Ohio’s go-to hotspots for, well, a little bit of everything in Polaris Fashion Place.

The two-story Topgolf offers a climate-controlled space, state of the art driving range, food and a full bar. Looking to tire out the kids? Big Air Trampoline Park is always a safe bet, and Lighthouse Immersive–offering an interactive space for art exhibitions–helps scratch that creative itch in a unique way.

There’s no shortage of food options in the Polaris area. Marcella’s provides top-notch Italian cuisine from the city’s most storied restaurateur, Cameron Mitchell. Another one of his concepts, Molly Woo’s, serves pan-Asian fare in a truly unique setting complete with paper lanterns. The nearby Kitchen Social is approachable but still widely regarded as one of the city’s best.

Mitchell’s Ocean Club is the spot for seafood, and fun newcomer CUT 132 bends all the rules of the traditional American steakhouse, in a good way. Stop by Kona Grill or Weenie Wonder for more casual options that will still hit the spot.

For an after-dinner drink spot, GrizzlyBird Brewing Company several miles northwest of Uptown is bursting with local personality and great brews.

Did You Know?

Downtown Columbus is only a 20-minute drive from the heart of Westerville? The historic North Market, the Ohio State House and the picturesque Scioto Mile await, alongside a multitude of other spots for food and fun.

If you’re looking to head somewhere else, the John Glenn International Airport is an even shorter trip, clocking in it at approximately 15 minutes. As Columbus continues to grow, so does its busiest airport’s slate of domestic and international options.
