50 YearS 50 Years OF MUSIC AND ART

It’s hard enough to perform at a top level for even a string of several years, nevertheless five entire decades. But that’s exactly what the long-standing Westerville Area Chamber Music & Arts Festival has been doing.

Well, technically it’s been 52 years, but who’s counting?

“Those years off [in 2020 and 2021] were from Covid. But any way you look at it, 50 years is a long time,” said Westerville Area Chamber Community & Outreach Manager Stacey Rusterholz.

While she said there won’t be anything ground breakingly different about the festival’s 50th iteration, the good news, there doesn’t have to be, as the festival continues to generate buzz among the Westerville community and beyond.

“The Westerville Area Chamber Music & Arts Festival has become a tradition in the community over the last 50 years, and we feel fortunate to be able to bring it back year after year with the support of local businesses and residents,” Rusterholz said.

This summer, the Westerville Music & Arts Festival will celebrate half a century of showcasing musicians, makers and more.
"There's a lot of excitement around the festival...it's such a great way to be able to show off the talent we have in the community."

In 2024, the event will take place July 13-14 at Westerville’s Heritage Park & Everal Barn, located at 60 N. Cleveland Ave. While the event isn’t free, it’s about as close to it as possible, as anyone over 10 years of age will be asked to pay $1 for admission. Trolley service to the festival will be available from both the Westerville Sports Complex and the public parking lot on E. Home St. in Uptown Westerville.

While all the vendors and entertainment have yet to be finalized, Lt. Dan’s New Legs will be the headlining band with 23 Southbound as the opening band on July 13. Additionally, Rusterholz said, each year around 20 different food vendors and 125 artists and makers are represented at the festival, alongside approximately 20,000 annual guests.

The event will also feature a youth arts area, interactive crafts, balloon art, with work spanning a multitude of mediums, including graphic design, ceramics, watercolor and much more.

“There’s a lot of excitement around the festival every year, and it’s such a great way to be able to show off the talent we have in the community,” Rusterholz said.

Arts Arts & CULTURE & CULTURE

“C urtain up! Light the lights!” Those lyrics from the musical Gypsy may dance in your head as you settle into your theater seat rapt with anticipation in one of the intimate venues at Otterbein University. Nationally renowned for its reputation in the arts, Otterbein’s highly respected faculty teach and inspire students who have gone on to successful careers - from Broadway and TV to dance companies and concert halls. With a diverse roster of performances and plenty of professional polish, Otterbein’s performing arts scene brings big city bravura to Westerville.

And speaking of Otterbein, the visual arts are well represented at The Frank Museum of Art and The Miller & Fisher Galleries . Three-dimensional art from Asia and Africa are the focus, while changing, multi-faceted exhibits spotlight local and national artists.

Art lovers can fuel their passion in the historic Uptown district where the David Myers Art Studio & Gallery offers private classes, art therapy, commissioned work and custom framing. But it’s Myers’ signature, vibrantly colored paintings and Westervillethemed lithographs that draw acclaim from art buffs. The Daylight Artist Collective is another gallery worth checking out; the joint venture among six female artists is known for its eclectic art styles including encaustic painting, fiber and photography.

The Westerville music scene is thriving thanks to local restaurants, bars and coffee shops that host live music year-round. For an intimate ambience, consider The Two-One Restaurant Bar & Patio at the Renaissance Columbus Westerville-Polaris Hotel on Friday or Saturday nights, Giammarco’s Italian Restaurant for music on the patio or in the Grotto, or the wide-ranging musical styles featured by Java Central

Coffee Roasters — their summer Lunchbox Concerts are a community staple. With the onset of warm weather, you’ll hear melodies wafting from all corners of town. The Fourth Friday Festivals, Uptown Friday Nights and the Westerville Music & Arts Festival (to be held July 13-14 in 2024) feature multiple musical genres and performers. And don’t miss the Sounds of Summer Concert Series at Alum Creek Park North Amphitheater because… who doesn’t love to picnic with a soundtrack?

For the theater geeks among us, Curtain Players, a Westerville adjacent, locally award-winning community theater, presents a full schedule of productions year-round in a quaint, vintage country church. From classic comedies to contemporary dramas and big, splashy musicals, there’s something sure to delight any theatergoer.

Public Public ARTWORK ARTWORK

“The American Issue” Sculpture

Located in the City Hall Courtyard and unveiled in June 2018, "The American Issue" stands as a captivating public art statue that intricately weaves together history and symbolism. The sculpture pays homage to Westerville's unique historical role, particularly 100 years ago, during the era of prohibition. The constitutional change was ardently championed by the Anti-Saloon League, an influential organization that relocated to Westerville in 1909, drawn by the city's staunch "pro-temperance" reputation. Created by nationally renowned artist and sculptor Matthew Gray Palmer.

Want to learn more? Check out the Anti-Saloon League Collection inside the Westerville History Museum .

Westerville boasts a rich cultural landscape with more than thirty public art pieces (monuments, sculptures and murals) that add flare and character to the city. Here's an overview of some notable public art installations in Westerville. View this map to explore all public art in Westerville.

First Responders ParkWorld Trade Center Steel

Westerville’s First Responders Park (374 W. Main St.) was first dedicated in 2010 to honor the service and sacrifice of all first responders. The park boasts three monuments, one of which is a section of steel known as “C-40” from the north tower of the World Trade Center which fell during the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

“Use Your Voice”

Megan Lee Designs Mural

The Megan Lee Designs Mural adds a splash of creativity and color to Westerville's public art scene.

Created by the talented local artist Megan Lee, this mural is a vibrant representation of the artist's unique style and encourages visitors to “use your voice.” The mural is located on the side of Megan Lee Designs Studio at 13 E. College Avenue.

“Mural on the Path”

Located at 137 E. College Ave., this mural is more than just a visual masterpiece—it's a collaborative effort aimed at inspiring individuals to forge their own unique journeys. Artist Jeremy Jarvis, along with a dedicated team, created a vibrant mural, stretching 68 feet wide and standing approximately 16 feet tall. The mural is strategically

positioned along one of the city’s recreational paths. The mural's design, conceptualized by Tim Lai Architects, encompasses a diverse representation of children, adults, and Westerville landmarks.

Westerville Legacy Mural

The eye-catching, 60-foot mural in Uptown Westerville (20 S. State St.) was painted by artist Nick Stull and features three individuals whose lives left an enduring impact on the community: William Henry Fouse, Benjamin Hanby and Agnes Meyer Driscoll.

Otterbein University’s first Black graduate, William Henry Fouse, class of 1893, was a teacher, principal, musician, lifelong learner and an inspiration to students and educators in his 45 years of work in public education.

Benjamin Hanby was a man of many titles, including minister, abolitionist, composer and teacher. His former home, The Hanby House , is listed on National Register of Historic Places and is a prominent location on the Ohio Historical Underground Railroad Trail

Agnes Meyer Driscoll stands out as a trailblazer in the history of Westerville, making significant contributions to the field of cryptanalysis and naval intelligence. Driscoll's pioneering work in codebreaking during the early 20th century garnered international recognition. You can see her historical plaque at 110 S. State Street.

Parks & RECREATION

Picture yourself rolling down the bike path, grocery purchases securely stowed as you head to the library to return a book. Then it’s over to Java Central for a friendfilled coffee meet-up and maybe, if time allows, a quick trip to Highlands Park Aquatic Center for a dip in the pool before heading home. It’s not a dream, just one of Westerville’s best kept secrets… you can get almost anywhere you want to go without a car, thanks to the city’s extensive, 50-plus miles of bike trails.

In on the secret for years is longtime Westerville resident and avid cyclist, Siobhan Blake, who credits the bike trails for enticing her to make Westerville her home. “There’s an amazing network of trails here; you can get to just about anywhere you want to go,” explains Siobhan, adding, “I will always pick riding

my bike somewhere if I can - we’re so fortunate to have one of the better [bike trails] here.” Conveniently connecting Westerville to area communities, the bike trail also encompasses part of the Ohio To Erie Trail (OTET) – a 326 mile route from the Ohio River in Cincinnati to Lake Erie in Cleveland.

The trail’s popularity among “bike packers” – cyclists who ride the entire length of the OTET in one trip – prompts Siobhan to point out that Westerville is well positioned for cyclists to enjoy its hospitality. Both the Aloft Columbus Westerville Hotel and the Renaissance Columbus Westerville-Polaris Hotel are located near the bike trail. Easy access to food (whether a quick bite or relaxing sit-down dinner), coffee, ice cream or an end of day beer or cocktail awaits just steps away in Uptown Westerville. Bike shops TREK and the Westerville Bike Shop are also trail

adjacent and the Westerville Bike Depot, right on the trail, offers repair tools, lockers and picnic tables in a shelter house. One of the newest and most convenient additions linking directly to the trail is North High Brewing , a full-service restaurant and brewery boasting an outdoor bar, huge digital TV, two patios and a fire pit. Fold-out pocket bike trail maps can be picked-up at the Westerville Community Center or through Visit Westerville

Convenience and exercise are great reasons to hit the bike trails, but Siobhan concedes the attraction for her is more about personal connection and a sense of community. “If I’d decided to drive… I would never have had so many personal interactions. I don’t think I’ve ever met an unpleasant person on the bike trail!”

Uptown Uptown

Blend Candle Co. is keeping Westerville’s flame alive with their eco-friendly, custom scented candles, exceptional events, and dedication to their community

Enter most large stores that sell candles and inquire about the candle ingredients, and you’re likely to hear about the fragrances they’re named after: vanilla bean, mahogany, coffee, butterscotch, and so on. Yet, what often goes unsaid are the toxins lurking inside of many of these manufactured candles today.

Fortunately, a fresh addition to Uptown Westerville, helmed by Michael Shannon and Denise Smith, is flipping the script. They care about what goes into the candles in their store and the candles you’re burning in your home. Blend Candle Co. provides a candle haven to the central Ohio community – that’s fun, beautiful, smells incredible, and is of course, paraffin-free and non-toxic.

“Some people care about what’s in their candles or daily use products, and some don’t, which is okay too. For us, healthy, non-toxic quality ingredients are important for our health and our pets! We wanted to create a product we’re proud of, for everyone to enjoy, and that isn’t full of toxins,” Smith emphasized.

Nestled in the heart of Uptown at 16 E. Main St., Blend Candle Co. welcomed its first patrons on November 19, 2023, to much anticipation. This 2,000 square-foot-studio isn’t just a place to grab candles and go though (but you can do that here, too!) – it’s an entirely interactive experience, where customers can concoct their own soy candles with hand-chosen scents displayed beautifully throughout the studio.

Beyond just candles, guests can indulge from an array of custom scented reed diffusers and hand soaps, all crafted from natural ingredients like jojoba oil and rosemary extract, housed in chic, reusable and refillable glassware. Smith hinted that soon, custom whipped sugar scrubs and perfume making will be available, plus body butters and other self-care essentials. “We have a lot of collaborations in the works with local artists and Uptown merchants in the space,” she teased.

For Shannon and Smith, opening a “scent studio” felt like a natural progression. With Shannon acquiring a hospitality degree and working in the hospitality industry in both Columbus and New York City, plus Smith’s entrepreneurial drive fueled by years of crafting homemade candles and soaps, Blend Candle Co. is the culmination of their shared passions for people, and specifically, for Westerville.

“We live in Westerville, and we love the community here,” Shannon explained. “There were spots for our storefront in other cities and neighborhoods that we could have chosen, but we really wanted to be here in our own community, providing a unique product and experience, and giving back in a way.”

"There were spots for our storefront in other cities....but we really wanted to be here in our own community, providing a unique product and experience, and giving back in a way."

Smith added, “My favorite thing has been meeting so many locals and community members. The outpouring support and warm welcomes have been powerful, and we’re so grateful for the community here.”

The studio’s inviting ambiance, complete with cozy exposed brick, warm lighting, communal tables, and large windows exude positive energy. “Customers are constantly walking in and saying, ‘Oh my gosh – this space is so beautiful,’” Shannon laughed. It’s become a sought-after venue for events like baby showers and wedding parties, with private party packages offering candle-making sessions and optional catering.

“We were initially unaware that we’d see so much interest in candle-making, group gatherings, and private events at our space,”

Shannon explained. “Going in and starting a new business, you’re confident that it would do well, but there’s always the ‘what if,’ you know? The amount of support though – through social media encouragement or just the warm comments when someone walks in – it’s so nice to see this happening,” Shannon humbly remarked.

Blend Candle Co.’s dedication to eco-conscious practices, tailored encounters, and exceptional service has ignited Uptown Westerville, fostering a movement of mindful, engaging, and immersive shopping that enlivens all of our senses at once.

Stop in and see for yourself! You don’t necessarily need a reservation (walk-ins are more than welcome) but to reserve group candle-making events, check out their website, blendcandleco.com

URBAN ESCAPE

At a glance, the Renaissance Columbus Westerville-Polaris Hotel might look like so many other chic, recently opened hotels of its kind. But it doesn't take long to see what sets it apart once you step inside.

From turtle shell lights, to decorative boat buoys and even a pool with specially painted walls meant to mimic the color lake water, the Renaissance Columbus Westerville-Polaris feels as much like a modern family cabin as it does a six year-old hotel.

“People are often surprised by this, but almost all Renaissance hotels have a theme, and they’re usually indigenous to the local area,” General Manager Ralph Mordocco said. “This hotel has a modern lake house or nautical theme to it.”

The hotel’s proximity to Alum Creek and the Hoover Reservoir inspired its designers to embrace the modern lake house theme throughout the building. This includes all of the hotel’s 222 rooms, its amenities, and even its high-end event space that can accommodate everything from weddings to corporate events.

The Renaissance Columbus WestervillePolaris Hotel offers amenities, top-tier dining alongside relaxed lakefront vibes

The Two-One, the signature restaurant of the Renaissance Westerville-Polaris, features a full outdoor space with laid back patio games, fire pits and even a small body of water, all contributing to its bonafide “day at the lake” vibes, according to Mordocco.

The eatery, which features a full slate of comfort food classics done with a culinary flare, takes its name after a piece of Westerville history as well.

The Two-One is named after the 21st amendment, which criminalized alcohol and launched Prohibition.

“Working through menu and beverage ideas, we always want to find a way to tie things back to Westerville and its history,” Mordocco said.

And even though the restaurant was inspired by the law that forbade alcoholic drinks, the Two-One is a fantastic spot to grab a cocktail or two, anchored by its creative cocktail program, which features its own 2022 private barrel selection from whiskey-maker Russel’s Reserve.

The Two-One was one of only six Ohio establishments to receive this prestigious private barrel opportunity, which was

personally created by and even branded with the eatery’s name.

In fact, the first thing you’re likely to notice when you walk into the lobby of this Westerville hotel is its lively and engaging bar. And according to Mordocco, this is intentional.

“The center point of the lobby is the main bar of the Two-One, and that’s kind of the Renaissance’s theme, we focus hotels on beverage and food, versus food and beverage, which is what you normally see,” he said. “Having our bar in such a central location creates an environment where people can come down, work in the lobby, eat, drink and socialize if you want to. It’s all available.”

ELEVATE YOUR STAY

The decor at the Aloft Columbus Westerville Hotel may be minimalist, but don’t let that fool you: This sleek accommodation is packed with attractions, and located nearby Uptown Westerville.

The 101-room hotel, which opened in early 2018, is located along Westerville’s southern gateway at 32 Heatherdown Dr. The hotel, situated on a 2.6 acre parcel of land, is one of the first sights of the city that many visitors catch, and that’s definitely not a bad thing.

Lovers of the arts and the fashionforward will feel right at home in the chic new hotel, which boasts a refined, and totally comprehensive, look and feel.

The Aloft Columbus Westerville Hotel boasts an enticing aesthetic, lively social spaces and much more

The polished aesthetic visible from a quick glance at its exterior–complete with a handful of bright blue neon streaks across its facade–are cohesively carried throughout the hotel.

Bold colors, eye-grabbing patterns and a host of unique textures bring the hotel’s minimalist charm together, alongside the addition of truly unusual (and weirdly wonderful) shelving systems and bookcases.

The sleek Aloft Columbus Westerville is more than just a pretty face, however.

The south Westerville hotel also features a fitness center, free coffee and tea, plenty of kid-friendly activities and sustainable amenities. This comes in addition to its luxurious indoor pool, which is heated and complemented by beautiful wooden cross beams on the ceiling and horizontal wood paneling.

When all that swimming works up an appetite, head down to the swanky WXYZ Bar, which features a lively spot

for cocktails, wine and beer alongside a variety of snacks. And while you’re likely there grabbing a nightcap or nursing a few craft cocktails, you can also enjoy the unexpectedly vivacious atmosphere the bar boasts.

This is in large part due to the music. The hotel hosts a wide variety of live performances from talented local and national musicians. What’s more, these evenings (which you can keep up with on the hotel’s social media pages) are free to attend, and welcome to locals, meaning you can rub elbows with residents and other hotel guests alike.

Premium movie channels can boost your experience if you choose to stick around the room, and the Aloft Columbus Westerville’s location, just a short drive from hubs like Easton Town Center, Polaris Fashion Place and Downtown Columbus, mean the entire Columbus area is at your fingertips as well.

SCROOGE SCROOGE

Good Medicine Productions will return its popular, interactive interpretation of A Christmas Carol, known as Uptown Scrooge, to the streets of Westerville this winter

When you think of dramatic productions during the holiday season, the first thing that comes to mind for so many of us is Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol

It has also, however, been produced in nearly every capacity imaginable, with over 100 renditions viable on the Internet Movie Database (IMDB) alone.

So, instead of simply rehashing A Christmas Carol, Good Medicine Productions plan to take the classic production into a bold new frontier this winter: The real world.

This winter Uptown Scrooge —an immersive, interactive re-creation of the play—will take place throughout the festive streets of Uptown Westerville.

“Every theater company does a version of A Christmas Carol. I think it’s a redemption story, and for the audience to really connect with Scrooge’s journey, they have to go through it,” said Good Medicine founder Kristie Vuocolo.

In 2024, performances will be held on Saturdays and Sundays, Dec. 1-22. While some details of this year’s performances haven’t been determined yet, Vuocolo said the production will span the streets of Uptown Westerville and even into businesses, with actors–who are open to interacting with play-goers–scattered across a section of the city.

In a fun full circle moment, this year’s production will include actors actually collecting donations for Good Medicine Productions posing as beggars.

“Each location that the audience is taken to somehow relates to the theme,” Vuocolo said. “Yes or no questions are posed to audience members, but people aren’t forced to interact with actors. They can do what they’re most comfortable with.”

2024 will be the 6th iteration of Uptown Scrooge. The interactive play was first performed in 2016, and until 2019 was held every year. It is now a semiannual event, and is typically held every other year.
