New York City is a design city
I was born and raised in Taipei, Taiwan. New York is where I aspire to work as a designer. It’s my ambition to study design in this city after I graduate. The reason is straightforward. There are the most design resources available, as well as the opportunity to meet world-class talents. It is a place where designers can have a big dream. New York differs from my hometown in a few ways. There is no earthquake in this area, and many of the buildings are slender and thin. Every function appears to be vertical. Because of this unique growth environment, public spaces have begun to expand vertically as well. This is an intriguing topic that, like lots of public spaces discussed with various axes and perspectives. I like public issues, especially infrastructure and large design. Because architecture is a traditional industry, the architects will eventually utilize the real space to solve the problem. When this space is larger the more positive energy can be released of course. A well-designed public space building is my heart’s desire as an architect with the sense of urban scale. This is what I have been aiming for. New York is also where I begin my journey. I am fortunate to be able to work with the fascinating talents of the world in the United States, to work on interesting public projects, and to allow myself to grow and thrive. I am going to do what I need to keep things moving forward.

Located in the Financial District of Boston, Winthrop Center will give a new definition and vitality to this part of the city. The tower’s massing is intended to be a landmark on the skyline of Boston, thus displaying deference for the nearby One Winthrop Square and other surrounding Art Deco-era structures constructed between the 1920s and 1940s. Winthrop Center seeks to update and revamp the current Winthrop Square, providing more open space to support Boston and bringing many other nearby public areas together. A large new civic space called the Connector will anchor the building and cross the site between the streets of Federal and Devonshire. This space is conceived as a year-round gathering place with programmed activities such as art shows or farmer’s markets, as well as more permanent retail establishments and restaurants.

The Monumental Column
THE CONNECTOR It is a unique gathering place active through all seasons activity from morning into the evening. It is a new urban room of shape and size, intended to be inherently civic in scale and function. The public space, a signature space, finished with warm stone-paving, shimmering ceiling metal panels, and transparent glazing. There are rates of dining, café, and market events flanking either side of the room. The market cafes, restaurants, office lobby, and other services open directly onto and flank the critical axis of the building, further energizing the pedestrian domain, close to streets.

THE MONUMENTAL COLUMN The Monumental column is at the connector ‘s west entrance. The overall height is 60 feet, installed from ground to 4th floor by several fabricated free-form stone panels that cover an original inclined column. The inspiration comes from a fluted wine glass. Suppose the light goes over the column at the bottom. Up to the top of the column, you can see the elegant, lozenge-shaped, and carved spiral pattern—the bottom light up during the nighttime. Representing connector entry is an icon.

Cornell University Statler Hotel Renovation

In January 2020, we worked on the renovation of the Porte- Cochere and Statler Hotel lobby, the teaching hotel on the Four Diamond campus of Cornell University, which serves as the first floor of the Ithaca campus. Greens are the main feature of this campus. The key concept is to build a whole new welcome entrance that links these greens.

NEW ENTRANCE In keeping with the project goals, the design of the Porte-cochere and lobby create a new, iconic entrance for guests to Cornell University’s campus and opens a new connection through the lobby to the campus to the West. The canopy design has a simple and elegant arrangement using a single architectural concrete pylon with painted structural framing fritted glass panels that allow light to pass through the lobby and create a column-free driveway area.

The high density population country: Taiwan
Clearly, urban infrastructure is the most influential force in any city, marking the boundaries of joy and pain, wealth and poverty, life and death. With the high density of an ever-rushing river of people, they directly stimulate the development among blocks, link and divide neighborhoods, and influence commercial development. About fifty years ago, in order to expand the road network and expand developments, some urban plans were rushed and not soundly balanced with the needs of the city. However, with rapid growth of the population, the city more than ever needs better infrastructure to serve more citizens. I consider that infrastructure buildings - such as rail stations, bus terminals, and airports - are the backbone of a city, and where architects make the greatest impact. Both the transport nodes and the infrastructure grids - power, water, sewage - are absolutely indispensable. Architects need to focus on the problems of areas and adjust their architectural functions for the city. In the high density environment of the city, infrastructures - especially transport infrastructures are not only equipped to provide just one function. They are multiple duties, to meet the varied needs of the populace. How to find the most needed infrastructures is a fascinating problem, and what motivates my interest.

Hualian Train Station

Hualian train station is located on the east side of Taiwan. The terrain is a narrow plain. The left side is near the Central Mountain range and the right side is near the Pacific Ocean. Work responsibility: // Develop the design and construction drawings for C area (the concrete part) // Develop the design for the city canopies
The ridership of train is increasing, so it is important to promote the development of the elevated railway. In Taiwan, all urban development started from the train stations, because people are only active in front of the train station, causing these developments to be uneven between the two sides. This project keeps the original train station and builds a new elevated train station. Through the design of the air bridge, shops and canopies, the new station attempts to stitch the two different sides of the railway and can accommodate more passengers in the future.

City Canopy Detail drawing The material of the umbrella consists of wood grain aluminum plates and painted steel pipes. The main structure is comprised of four painted steel pipes that branch out to combine with the second structure. The wood grain aluminum plates provide shade effects. The top of the canopy is responsible for rain protection and there are water holes in the corner for drainage.

Frontal concrete façadeOn the right side of the city canopy, there are fairfaced concrete design. In order to make the left and right façade look consistent, the right side of the concrete facade also has the grille design. The unit of concrete grille is from a square that folds at the bottom and top in the opposite direction, and then is assembled together. 16 concrete grilles are controlled by two arcs that represent transformation and rhythm. Behind the concrete façade, there are retail stores and exhibition spaces. The façade is also an important entrance symbol.

In order to make the development efficiently, the 19-story building combines mixed use programs. The underground part is for subway use, and the 1st to 3rd floors are for commercial use, and the rest is for residential use. In Taiwan, there is an urban law that makes commercial activity happen in the lower floors. On the design part, the “big white S” links the canopy, commercial spaces and neighboring structures.

The front side of Taipei MRT Zhongshan station faces the main street of the city. On the back side, it connects with a narrower lane. The total height of the building is limited under the line- 1:3.6 and 1:2. Because the building mixes commercial spaces with subway use, it can be built higher. The front of the façade features a different design than the back side, because more activity usually happens on the main street.

Work responsibility: // Develop the design and construction drawings for the Student Activity Center, the corridor, and the restaurant, which are all located in the north dormitory. // Develop the design for the city canopies
The third dormitory is designed for graduate students to use. This is a 10-story tall dormitory. If we read from the plan, the entrance matches the buildings on the left and right sides. The north-west side of the building features the student restaurant, and the north-east side houses the student activity center. The middle of the project has a wind corridor that allows natural light and wind to reach both the north and south dormitories. In the plan, there are at least two rooms that are designed for public use. Especially for the design of the north-east side, the big stair way is linked with the landscape to bring comfort to the students in the dormitory.

Lanzhou Dongjiao School is a school used by primary and middle school for nine years. The geographical location is around the Yellow River in front of it and the hills behind it. In the overall school shape, the south is low and the north is high echoes the relationship between the terrain and the city. On the other hand, it provides Maximum daylight guaranteed by sunshine. Local cultural bricks are used on the facade, which expresses the combination of traditional materials and modern craftsmanship. The primary and middle school are divided into east and west. The primary school is in the east, and the middle school is in the west. Therefore, the public space is the central axis of the design and connects the various public teaching areas (multifunctional hall, school history exhibition, library, etc.) In the meantime, the offices surround the public circulation line that allow teachers and students can enjoy creative public space and ensure the safety of student activities in the yards.

Multi-layered courtyard with vibrant facadeDifferent from traditional teaching buildings, Lanzhou Dongjiao School has created a multi-level courtyard for students to have the green and natural learning space. The strip-shaped building divides the school base into six courtyards, and the public central axis is connected to each courtyard. The middle school and the primary school courtyards have its own theme: game courtyard, performance courtyard, distribution courtyard, etc. Also, the use of bricks is divided into two types: general bricks and modeling bricks, providing empty parts for necessary air conditioning and lighting.

Zhongzhou Kindergarten is in downtown Shenzhen. The main entrance is near Shenzhen North Railway Station. Its main design feature is an infinite shaped roof, which provides a large outdoor space for children to play. There are total 18 classrooms, including grade 01, grade 02 and grade 03. The shape of the volume forms two courtyards, and the classroom is composed of sliding doors, so that children can get close to the natural environment while studying. In terms of detailed design, the material of the wooden roof is glulam planks, and the overall slope is 1:12 gentle slope design. The surrounding guardrail is also provided with more than 1m3 to protect children from climbing over the fence. The combination of wooden beams and steel columns provides a length of 12M wide Unit modulus of 10M. The classroom units are arranged in an infinite shape under the entire large roof.

At the beginning of the design, we first arranged the necessary classroom space, enclosing the two courtyards, and then softened the boundary. The courtyard space in the middle is outlined by the intertwined form, which also provides plenty of sunlight and air ventilation to provide a comfortable learning environment for the children.

Learning environment in the inner courtyardThe kindergarten classrooms are divided into upper and lower floors. The classroom doors are sliding doors, which can be fully opened and directly face the courtyard. Architecture is a prosthesis to nature
What is a prosthesis? The definition of a prosthesis is a specific device that can focus on the subject’s injury and provided a synthetic part to remedy or reinforce it. When the prosthesis was worn, then it can restore the original function of the lost part, or even become more robust. For me, nature is an existing, innate and irresistible force that we must successfully and wisely reckon with. Constantly, architecture should be designed and built with nature constantly in mind. Unfortunately, In the twenty-first century, people know how to destroy nature, but do not know how to repair nature. Thanks to the new technology, today’s technology is no longer difficult to create a 100-storey skyscraper. Nowadays, architects need to think further on how to use advanced technology to find the balance between architecture and nature. I believe that in the next century, architecture for our city will play the role of prosthesis, merging man and nature to grant new abilities to both. For a city’s prosthesis, there are basically three major characteristics: An architectural body can be reformed according to the environment need. Architectures can convert natural resources to satisfy human needs. Architecture will be a prototype that can be mass-produced and applied by modern technology. The new multi-functional architecture, which connects nature and human beings that is able to restore natural damage, and then supplies it to mankind. Through industrial production, the new architectures will be tightly placed into human life. This is not only an ideal built by my imagination, but a reality I want to bring to life. I believe that as long as we discuss the use of space, the topic can be a part of architecture. As a young aspiring architect of a new century, I believe that discovering how architecture can heal the wounds of the environment can help strike a new, healthier balance between man and nature. This is why we need to think carefully about the subject.

My thesis story is set in the near future- 20 years from now. When people cannot adapt to their original living environment, people need an “Urban Prosthesis” to balance between human and nature. A prosthesis is able to be taken on and off. It is an automatic design without human operations.

I assume the design is built after climate changes. (The subway system already lost it original functions). Therefore, the terminals and vehicles are able to be the role as a repairer. Basically, the new structure of the subway station should have the function of, charge electricity, maintenance, pump and defend water. The end of these lines will be my sites- the repair start points.

Train Prosthesis Support cars have a lot of potential to be a role to repair our city, because trains are moveable vehicles that can go with an existing track system from places to place. However, in the climate change, when the next disaster comes, can they still carry out task normally? In the natural world, animal’s physical structure are more durable than human beings. As a prosthesis, it can also be combined with robotic vehicles. If we combine these features with support cars, they can be the main repair-roles in our city.

Street houses are a special type of building in Taiwan. The width versus length has inharmonious proportion. The atmosphere of lighting environment The idea is from crack that can make light pass into the house naturally. In the third floor. The brightest floor consists of many planes and open areas that are suitable places to work efficiently. In the second floor, large windows at the front and rear of the building light the kitchen and living room. Finally, the ground floor are private rooms that do not have many windows. The sole function of the ground floor is to provide a place to sleep.

3 neighborhood stations Undergraduate thesis
In 2015, the aging railway network of the city of Taichung was scheduled to be completely elevated in the following year. However the old ground network has already distorted the layout of the surrounding neighborhood. The rebuilt train station will play a new role, not only by improving land use and removing site difficulties, but also linking both sides of the tracks into one unified community.

Above the green blanket, it has an automatic checking machine that serves as the passengers’ gateway to the welcoming greenery. The green blanket is also a vast courtyard, perfect for a stroll and for viewing the neighborhood.

Station02The bicycle bridge The bicycle bridge connects with the eastside block, allowing bikers to ride along river’s path. There are bushes planted at the entrance of the bridge, to welcome the riders.

Station03Citizens’ plaza and students’ activity sites With the large number of passengers, the student can hold many types of activities easily. The inviting new entrance represents the city gate, and a LED board provide useful information. The new venue of students would be the public space and a friendly arena for the urban.
