the winter months, lower than 40% to avoid condensation on windows. Furnace installed or portable? Furnace installed systems have the benefit of whole house conditioning, automatic water feeds, remote control panels. But most frequently on a furnace in the crawl space or garage, resulting in out of sight, sometimes hard to access, and unmaintained condition. They also often pull unfiltered air out of the return duct, blow it across the wet screens, then into the distribution system. The immediate drawback is that the unfiltered air the humidifier uses has dust and exfoliated skin particles that is captured by the wet filter, and is a delicious growth medium for mold and bacterial growth. The second type is a portable unit that can be re-filled, and moved around the home, These models usually also will have a wicking filter.
HUMIDIFIER K C E H C Y T I L A E R The patient showed up at a local hospital room with shortness of breath, rapid shallow breathing, sharp stabbing chest pain. The immediate step was to move him into a negative pressure room, and run a COVID-19 rapid test. Results were negative. With additional testing, and investigation it was revealed the patient had a bacterial lung infection rather than COVID. The root cause was found to be an unmaintained humidifier in the patient’s home.
Establish a cleaning routine A little on-line research suggests the filters in these units should be cleaned once a week, and if taken out of use, the filters removed, stored dry, and the water tray emptied, and if there is a water supply, it needs to be turned off. There are excellent articles on cleaning (vinegar, a mild acid is popular), storing, and use of humidifiers on line these days. What ever you do, for the sake of your health, maintain a regular cleaning schedule on your humidifier, it is important for you and your family.
Humidifiers First, a little understanding of the dynamics. Everyone’s metabolism is different, what works for one, may not affect the other. So, a few of us may find very dry conditions result in dry eyes, dry nasal passages leading to nose bleeds, chapped skin or lips, itchy dry skin, worsened asthma & allergy symptoms, all to varying degrees depending on the person. Increasing the humidity in the home often helps. Now, consider your home. Commonly, the ambient air in it has a humidity level of between 40-60% relative humidity. This means there is water floating in the air. With wood stoves, forced air furnaces this often decreases. With hydronic boilers, the levels are more normal. As a rule of thumb, during the summer you will want humidity levels to be below 50%, ideally 30-45%. In
