Alaska Youth Outdoor Science Early Leadership Summer Camps and Expeditions This program is run as weekly summer camps, in addition to backpacking trip options over the summer, and is designed to help young teens cultivate within themselves a sense of leadership, confidence and a lifelong love of our world’s wild spaces. Youth will level up from topics learned in earlier programs; knowledge, skills and abilities will be explored at a higher level, and participants are held to a more rigorous standard of behavior, leadership, teamwork and learning expectations. In this program, teens will have leadership opportunities with their peers, where they learn how to articulate conversations about safety, respect, responsibility and teamwork in the outdoors setting. Into the Woods Alaska’s Summer Camps are all about fostering a lifetime of outdoor safety skills and sustainability in outdoor recreation, for all ages, through authentic, place-based connections to our local wild spaces. Jr. Youth Outdoor Science Summer Camps and Expeditions Our Jr. Youth outdoor studies summer camps and expeditions are focused on teaching valuable environmental science concepts and knowledge as well as useful outdoor recreation and safety skills. While the younger groups are building foundations and engaging in more play-based learning activities, we meet our increasingly independent 10-13 year old participants with a more serious learning plan and set of expectations that will set them up for success when they take on bigger adventures as older teens. Through a fun and hands-on program, our Jr. Youth spend the day engaging with their peers while applying themselves to learning skills that will keep them safe over a lifetime of being outdoors. Some of the things our Jr. Youth will learn: wilderness first aid skills, knottying, backpacking skills, deeper understanding of environmental science knowledge, group leadership and teamwork skills, making “go/no-go” decisions, finding safety and getting help and much more! Young Outdoor Explorers Summer Camps Wake up, go to camp, play outside with friends all day, go home tired, sleep, repeat! Our young outdoor explorers are an exciting age group to work with - they are full of energy, flourishing independence, a zest for playing with friends and not missing any chances to show off their skills to their peers and adults. We meet our young outdoor explorers at their level, and then give them chances to challenge themselves and learn new skills. This age group’s curriculum focuses on the building blocks of wilderness safety skills, sustainability, critical problem solving, teamwork, friendship, accountability and taking ownership over their gear, actions and learning in the outdoors setting. We use a unique blend of theater in the woods, playing, art and outdoor skills sessions to help ignite a passion for outdoor science in this age group. Breakthrough Vocal Camp Does your child love to sing? This is the camp for them! Breakthrough Vocal Camp is back after two years off due to COVID-19 and we are so happy! Sign up your child, then have them select a song that they’re familiar with that they want to work on at camp and start learning it. *Note* Be mindful of song selection, as we only have a week to work on it. Make sure that the song selected is a song that will not be challenging to them. Something that they can sing now, not what they want to sing someday. The first part of each day will be focused on one-on-one sessions with both the vocal and the performance counselors. They will work on their solo song with them to help get them ready to perform. When campers are in individual sessions, the other campers are with another counselor doing crafts or playing music games to learn more all while have fun! The second half of the day will consist of a group number practice of a song that will have already been selected and sent to you when registration is complete. Towards the end of the day, we all will walk a block down the street to a playground for some unwind and fun time. At the end of the week, the campers will put on a performance for family and friends, full of song and dance of both their individual song and the group number to end the show! Our spots are limited to be able to focus on each camper, so book your camper now as our spots fill up every year!
