To me, what is
[DESIGN]
?
Everyone has different interpretation about "Design". To me, the answer of "What is Design?" is constantly changing as time goes on. Before study design, I thought design is a complex of beauty and smart. Something is made beautiful and smart is design. After study for one year indusrial design, I thought design is solving problem. Something cleverly and perfectly solve the problem is design. And now, I consider design is "connect". Designers connect objects to the user's life, after understanding their needs, in a delicate, right, and pleasent way. I believe design is an action that can change the world, and make everything better.

Sometimes, parents and children can't have a nice communication
The gap between parents and children is a long-term problem. During the research, we found the two cycle about communication of them. If they are in the good one, the connection between parents and children will grow fonder. However, if they have a bad communication, the relationship will gradually worsen. How can we make them avoid the vicious cycle, and become virtuous cycle? How can we build a better communication between them?

[PROBLEM] -FOUND SOME INTEREST KNOWLEDGE
1.Writing is better than talking Writing can prevent using emotional and hurtful words because people are more calm and rational than arguing.
2.Afraid to express idea face to face Sometime, children want to tell their feeling, but they think parents are still angry and may scold them.
3.Forget to responce Both of them know there are some problem in their relationship, but as time gose by, they forget to have communication with each other. However, The problems still exist, and will become worse next breaking out.
4.Express ideas unclearly confusedly Children may not be mature enough to express their thought and idea clearly. Sometime, parents can't realize what their kids say, or even misunderstand them.

[ I D E AT I O N ] -HOUSE APPLIANCE We spent a lot of time thinking what is the best appliance to feat our design goal, and what kind of function can reach it. High technology may achieve our concept, but we want it looks simple, normal but beautiful, like a wonderful furniture someone will put at home.

CO-HO is a stand lamp that can boost deeper communication between family members. Connecting with CO-HO APP, if a request is sent from the APP, one of the CO-HO lamp would bend down and the light will turn on. Only after the requested member responses on the APP, and then both show their palms under the light together for induction, will the light return to it’s original state. This setting is to make sure that both members and accept each other’s ideas.

One of the family members want to initiate a conversation. He/she sends a message and a stem of CO-HO bends to indicate the new message. The designated message receiver responds on CO-HO App. The message sender and receiver put their hands under CO-HO together to straighten it.

Although I realize dutch coffee more, I still have many unclear questions, so I decide to have a interview plan...

To get more knowledge about dutch coffee, I go to a famous coffee shop which have very nice duch coffee. Not only taste the coffee and observe some coffee device, but also interview the shop owner. He have made coffee for several years, and making dutch is one of his specialties.

COMPETITORS -DRIVER & IWAKI In order to understand the trend of cold drip coffee maker on the market, I make a simple research at these two--Driver and Iwaki, which are most popular for now.

[ I D E AT I O N ] -PROCESS OF MAKING A ICE DRIP COFFEE During the Ideation, I list all the procedures of using ice drip coffee maker and draw an User Journey Map to think about which one of the step making user upset or frustrated. These manners help me to find out the problems of making ice drip coffee.
I sketch a lot in order to find creative solutions. I hope I can creat a new ice drip coffee maker not only a novel modeling, but also a innovative experience.

[ P ROT OT Y P E ] -MAKE SURE THE SIZE & MODELING The size of ice drip coffee maker is very importment. Since it must be smaller than storage space in the refrigerator, but it still need to have enough volume for drinking. I made a lot of rough models for testing the proper size of the maker, confirm my design is precise.

Because the coffee maker is a little heavy, the brass shelf can share weight of the maker, makes users easier pour coffee.
The coffee pot can tear apart from the coffee maker, this makes it easy wash and dry out.
The cone style coffee dripper makes users easily discard the wet coffee powder.

[SCENARIO] -USING NYMPH'S TEAR NYMPH'S TEAR is a more thoughtful ice drip coffee maker. Considering the whole process of making a cold drip coffee, not only when users are assembling the maker. Ice drip coffee ferments easily if the temperature is too high, so most of the time users put the coffee maker in the refrigerator. NYMPH'S TEAR's brass shelf allows users to put the maker into the refrigerator easily while also making the coffee pot stable.

Unlike normal ice drip coffee makers where users must disassemble the device to pour coffee, there is a special cut inside the maker lets users pour coffee directly from the maker. To reduce the effort of pouring coffee, two rotational pairs were designed onto the coffee pot and the brass shelf. NYMPH'S TEAR hopes to help coffee lovers enjoy ice drip coffee more conveniently!

...This behavior is unconvience because every time you enter the indoor area, you need to fold your umbrella and put it in bag. Furthermore, because the umprella is wet, so your hands will get wet when you folding it. Worsen, using disposal plastic bag as a covering is wasteful and environmentally hazardous.

In this assignment, professor ask us create our work with "trash", all the resources and componets must be garbage. Usually, we have to make some works for school assignments, but after scoring, they become trash and cause a lot of environmental problems (because the materials of the models are hard to resolve). So this time, we change our starting point, make something without consuming and wasting. I think this restriction is very interesting and meanful, so I start to ideat what kind of form can convey the concept that "Do something good for the environment".

[ TA I N A N ] In this conference workshop, I cooperated with students from other countries. Our assignment is to do a project about Tainan. Since they don’t know Tainan, I took them on a tour. During four days tour, we realize riding bicycle is the best way to visit Taiwan. So we designed a bike system that was better than the original one(TBike). In additional, we made an App, to make touring Tainan easier and more comfortable.

We found some problems when we tried to make a plan about visiting Tainan. First, because not all of us familiarizing Tainan, we didn’t have any idea about where to visit. And when we finally decided our journey, we faced to another problem--how to get there? The only way we could choose is taking taxi and walking on foot.

The weather in Tainan is extremely hot, we all felt exhausted after the day. Therefore, we decided to designing a new manner and system about touring in Tainan.
Thus, we decide to solve 'The problems of foreigners traveling Tainan.'

Planning -Took way too long. -Solid hour of planning. -No real app that can help plan for us. -People unfamiliar with the area don’t know where to go.
Walking -Tainan is hot. -Getting to the next place can take a long time. -Directions are hard if you are alone by yourself.
Place to go -Once we get to the destination, it was hard to figure out where to go next. -Disconnection with places close by worth seeing but no one knows about. -Not everyone knows what’s close by.

Taxis -Not always convenient. -Splitting fare with friends is hard. -No real app that can help plan for us. -Drivers don’t always know English.
Scooters -Need to have special license to drive a scooter. -People unfamiliar/ concerned with driving a scooter.

[TOPIC 'CO-'] -HUMAN x ENVIRONMENT
We are indifferent of environment.
We already know about environmental deterioration, and we can see a lot of data show that the weather is getting more and more abnormal, but why people don't take action save the earth? We think the reason is that people don't directly feel the change of the environment. Diagram and data maybe display some information of that, but we don't really think that concern with us.

[DESIGN GOAL] -HUMANS' SENSE Make people sense the environment more directly.
We think if we can make people feel the change of environmental factors more directly instead o f s h o w i n g t h e n u m b e r, p e o p l e w i l l b e c o m e aware that the environment has worsen, and the weather has extremely changed.

[CONCEPT] -STRENGTHEN THE CONNECTION In order to make people feel the environment more directly, we let some environmental factors transform into the senses thich we are familiar with--sight and hearing. The reason we choose these three factors is that they are the main factors effecting human comfort .
[HOW IT WORKS] -TECHNOLOGY OF IT Humidity- Color Change: There is CoCl2 covering on the surface. This material shows different color according to the humidity of the environment.
In the center of some selected hexagons are LSR (light sensitive resistor), which senses the sunlight’s angle and intensity, causing the overall structure to change continuously.
In some other hexagons’ center holes inlays resonance tubes, which can receive wind and originate sounds. Because the structure changes continuously, the sounds vary every moment.
The structure are hexagons constructed with regular triangles.

When the environment conditions are bad, FEEL- ING BOND will display a abnormality look. It’s color will be dark red, and it’s structure will deform severely. And if “FEELING BOND” i s l o c a t e d i n o v e r- u r b a n i z e d a re a , i t c o u l d n ’t o r i g i n a t e v o i c e , w h i c h means that the pressure humans have imposed on nature had already made Mother Earth dying and silent.

[ C O NC LUSI O N ] I always considered "What is good design?" when I did these works. I believe the most important factor in the design process is users.
