To me, what is
[DESIGN]
?
Everyone has different interpretation about "Design". To me, the answer of "What is Design?" is constantly changing as time goes on. Before study design, I thought design is a complex of beauty and smart, something is made beautiful and smart is design. After study for one year indusrial design, I thought design is problem solving, something cleverly and perfectly solve the problem is design. And now, I consider design is "connection". After understanding user's needs, designer connects objects, services or systems to user's life, in a delicate, right, and pleasent way. I believe design is an action that can change the world, and make human's life better.

-PRODUT DESIGNFLOW is a innovative city folding bike t hat makes user more easily and comfortablely explore a city. W ith the special folding mechanism we designed, it can be folded to a very small size in a few seconds, thus user can carry the bike on subway or metro, even on plane without an effort. We hope our design will let city explorers or bike lovers visit a city with fluency and have a better riding experience.

[BACKROUND] -HOW TO EXPLORE THE CITY WITH FLUENCY?
In the begining, we were thinking about what is the best transportation for city exploring. We interview our friends who love to travel or visit different place, and they all said bike is the best tool for doing this thing. Because the speed of riding bike is proper, you would not miss anything in the journey. In addition, riding bike is a comfortable experience, you can not only look the view but also feel the wind and temper, all of your senses will recept the information form the environment.

Thus we started to get knowledge about what is city explorer or bike lover like when he/she visits a city with his/her bike? Where is the place he/she usually visit? How long does he/she always spend? After searched a lot of information from internet, we had a general understanding about their mindset. However, we still had many questions about the detail, so we prepared to have a interview plan to get further information.

"... Most of time I can only ride for 5km around my home because my strengh is limited... I know the bike can be carryed on the subway, but it's too annoying and exhausting to do this... "
"... I ride folding bike because it's compact and portable that can carry on subway and let in my room. But the folding process is annoying and exhausting that I need to spend 10 minutes to fold it before enter the subway station... "
"... I used to ride my bike in my living area, but after doing that for about 10 times, I feel bored about the same view and experience in this area. I want to explore more place and find different thing with my bike... "
"... I just want a bike which ride comfortably and carry easily. I don't need the high tech or some fancy features, just the simple and functional bike is the best to me..."
DESIRE ABOUT TRANSFER In this stage, we found that bike lovers have the desire of transfer with their bike when they are exploring the city. Depend on their response, we also found that they feel exhausted and annoyed when they try to carry their bike into the subway or metro station. They all mentioned that there is no proper city bike covering both well-riding on the road and easycarrying for transfer. Thus we started to think about waht is the crucial problem that bother the user most, and how can we slove that problem with a clever design.

We also made a map of riding the folding bike. People may think folding bike is a better choice if someone need to transfer with his/her bike. But after research, we found that folding bike still has the same problems as the regular one. Moreover, the folding process is difficult and annoying, makes people feel exhausted and frustrated. What's worse is that riding the folding bike is less comfortable than the regular bike because of the smaller wheels.

[INSIGHT] - W H AT A R E T H E C R U C I A L P R O B L E M S O F C I T Y E X P L O R I N G ?
REGULAR BIKE 1.Hard to carry into the subway station Because the regular is big and heavy, it is hard to carry into the subway or metro station. Moreover, almost all subway/metro law in different country doesn't allow the regular bike on the esclator, makes this task more unconvience and exhausting.
2.Unconvience when stand the bike in carriage When user is in the carriage, he/she need to find a space for his/her bike, and stand his/ her bike for a time. It is also an exhausting task because the carriage usually overcrowed, standing with the bike in the crowd is very uncomfortable experience.
FOLDING BIKE 1.Uncomfortable riding experience Because of the smaller wheel than regular bike, ride the folding bike is less comfortable and speed. Smaller wheel makes the bike very compact when it is folded, but weaken the most important thing--riding experience.
2.Time-consuming folding process Nowadays folding bike emphasize on smaller and compacter size, but it cause the folding process very annoying and time consuming. Lots of users mentioned that they feel exhausted and frustrated when they try to fold their bike.

In this stage, we develop lots of idea, draw numerous sketches and use many post-it in order to solve the problems we had found earlier. We not only think about the function and mechanism, but also try the form and style. We want this city bike makes people feel "fluency" both usage and looks, so we work so hard to take these parts into consideration.

[ P ROT OT Y P E ] -HOW CAN WE TEST OUR IDEA? We did a lot of tests of our ideas to make sure that which idea could be worked or adjusted. We not only made scaled rough models, but also several real sized models to check the proportion and usability. We approximately did four times big modifications in this stage, and finally, arised the best one which will be shown in next page.

After repetively developed and defined our idea, we finally came up with an innovative city folding bike, FLOW. FLOW can be easily and quickly folded to a compact size, which makes user carry it into the station or on the plane without exhaustion. Moreover, because of the fix-gear liked proportion, FLOW has more comfortable riding experience than other regular folding bikes.This picture shows the components of FLOW which will be mentioned later.

[HOW TO USE] -EASY AND QUICK FOLDING PROCESS
1.UNLOCK First, push the orange buttom to unlock the "Safety Belt Lock", and the down tube will seperate from the head.
2.PULL Second, draw the down tube up and pull the rotary mechanism on the top tube.

3.SLIDE Third, slide the back-triangle to the head with the slider in the top tube and fold fold the top tube.
4.FOLD Last, if you need to put FLOW in the luggage or trunk, fold the top-tube, the handlebar and the paddle to make it more compact.

[SECNARIO] -TRANSFER WITH BIKE WITHOUT AN EFFORT
TA K E O N S U B W AY O R M E T R O FLOW can be very simply and quickly folded in a few second, so if you carry it to take on the subway or metro, you don't need to stand out of the station and fold your bike for fifteen minutes with exhaustion. More over, after folding it, both wheels are parallel, so it's more easily to stand the bike and carry it when you in the station or on the carriage.

TA K E O N P L A N E Moreover, FLOW can also be folded to a very small size, which fit the size of a regular luggage. If you want to carry your bike on plane, most bike or folding bike need extra paid because the size is too big. FLOW conform to the regular luggage size regulation of most airline, so you don't worry about spending a lot of money to take on plane or being prohibited from the airline officer

Sometimes, parents and children can't have a nice communication
The gap between parents and children is a long-term problem. During the research, we found the two cycle about communication of them. If they are in the good one, the connection between parents and children will grow fonder. However, if they have a bad communication, the relationship will gradually worsen. How can we make them avoid the vicious cycle, and become virtuous cycle? How can we build a better communication between them?

1.Writing is better than talking Writing can prevent using emotional and hurtful words because people are more calm and rational than arguing.
2.Afraid to express idea face to face Sometime, children want to tell their feeling, but they think parents are still angry and may scold them.
3.Forget to responce Both of them know there are some problem in their relationship, but as time gose by, they forget to have communication with each other. However, The problems still exist, and will become worse next breaking out.
4.Express ideas unclearly confusedly Children may not be mature enough to express their thought and idea clearly. Sometime, parents can't realize what their kids say, or even misunderstand them.

CO-HO is a stand lamp that can boost deeper communication between family members. Connecting with CO-HO APP, if a request is sent from the APP, one of the CO-HO lamp would bend down and the light will turn on. Only after the requested member responses on the APP, and then both show their palms under the light together for induction, will the light return to it’s original state. This setting is to make sure that both members and accept each other’s ideas.

COMPETITORS -WHO IS MY COMPETITOR? In order to understand the trend of cold drip coffee maker on the market, I make a simple research at these two--Driver and Iwaki, which are most popular for now.

During the Ideation, I list all the procedures of using ice drip coffee maker and draw an User Journey Map to think about which one of the step making user upset or frustrated. These manners help me to find out the problems of making ice drip coffee.
I sketch a lot in order to find creative solutions. I hope I can creat a new ice drip coffee maker not only a novel modeling, but also a innovative experience.

Because the coffee maker is a little heavy, the brass shelf can share weight of the maker, makes users easier pour coffee.
The coffee pot can tear apart from the coffee maker, this makes it easy wash and dry out.
The cone style coffee dripper makes users easily discard the wet coffee powder.

[SCENARIO] -USING NYMPH'S TEAR NYMPH'S TEAR is a more thoughtful ice drip coffee maker. Considering the whole process of making a cold drip coffee, not only when users are assembling the maker. Ice drip coffee ferments easily if the temperature is too high, so most of the time users put the coffee maker in the refrigerator. NYMPH'S TEAR's brass shelf allows users to put the maker into the refrigerator easily while also making the coffee pot stable.

Unlike normal ice drip coffee makers where users must disassemble the device to pour coffee, there is a special cut inside the maker lets users pour coffee directly from the maker. To reduce the effort of pouring coffee, two rotational pairs were designed onto the coffee pot and the brass shelf. NYMPH'S TEAR hopes to help coffee lovers enjoy ice drip coffee more conveniently!

...This behavior is unconvience because every time you enter the indoor area, you need to fold your umbrella and put it in bag. Furthermore, because the umprella is wet, so your hands will get wet when you folding it. Worsen, using disposal plastic bag as a covering is wasteful and environmentally hazardous.

In this assignment, professor ask us create our work with "trash", all the resources and componets must be garbage. Usually, we have to make some works for school assignments, but after scoring, they become trash and cause a lot of environmental problems (because the materials of the models are hard to resolve). So this time, we change our starting point, make something without consuming and wasting. I think this restriction is very interesting and meanful, so I start to ideat what kind of form can convey the concept that "Do something good for the environment".

Workshop Theme
[ TA I N A N ] In this conference workshop, I cooperated with students from other countries. Our assignment is to do a project about Tainan. Since they don’t know Tainan, I took them on a tour. During four days tour, we realize riding bicycle is the best way to visit Taiwan. So we designed a bike system that was better than the original one(TBike). In additional, we made an App, to make touring Tainan easier and more comfortable.

We found some problems when we tried to make a plan about visiting Tainan. First, because not all of us familiarizing Tainan, we didn’t have any idea about where to visit. And when we finally decided our journey, we faced to another problem--how to get there? The only way we could choose is taking taxi and walking on foot.

[PROBLEMS] - T H E D I F F I C U LT I E S W E F A C E D
Planning -Took way too long. -Solid hour of planning. -No real app that can help plan for us. -People unfamiliar with the area don’t know where to go.
Walking -Tainan is hot. -Getting to the next place can take a long time. -Directions are hard if you are alone by yourself.
Place to go -Once we get to the destination, it was hard to figure out where to go next. -Disconnection with places close by worth seeing but no one knows about. -Not everyone knows what’s close by.

Taxis -Not always convenient. -Splitting fare with friends is hard. -No real app that can help plan for us. -Drivers don’t always know English.
Scooters -Need to have special license to drive a scooter. -People unfamiliar/ concerned with driving a scooter.
T-Bike -Not placed in enough places. -Can’t park bike when it’s full. -Can’t rent bike when it’s empty. -Can't find the bike station.

[ RESEARCH FOR TP1] - P R O D U C T I N F O R M AT I O N TP1 is a product combined transistor radio and portable record player, which was designed by a famous Germany industrial designer - Dieter Rams. The famous about TP1 is its aesthetic and utility. It not only be well-working when the radio and record player are seperated, but also useful when user combine the two parts of this product.

[ INSPIRED BY DIETER RAMS] -TEN PRINCIPLES OF GOOD DESIGN What is good design? Dieter rams expressed in his ten principles for good design in 1970s, which is still useful and valuable in nowadays design circle. If we look the detail of TP1, we can find lots of these principles in this product. I think this is the reason that TP1 can be so impact and classic, even influence the next half century products like iPod family.
What I learnt from him? To e n s u r e I r e a l l y u n d e r s t a n d t h i s p r o d u c t a n d h i s principles, I came up with an idea to practice these rules that is designing a modern TP1. I thought I would turely understand why TP1 and these principles can be so timeless and classic during the design process, and keep these in a modern one. I hoped I can learn these pricuples and handle very skillfully in the future project.

[ MODERN TP1] -REDESIGN FOR MODERN TP1 TP1 is a combination of a radio and a CD player, however, as time gone by, people nowadays use different gadgets to enjoy music. I was thinking what devices meet people's listenning habit the best and at the same time fit the 1+1>2 feature of TP1. After ideation, I came up with an idea of portable bluetooth speaker plus portable wireless charger. I think these two devices can working well not only independently but also when assembled, just like the original TP1. Last but not least, in this project, I constantly checked whether my design obeyed Dieter Rams's ten design principles, kept altering it to be a good design.

[ C O NC LUSI O N ] I always considered "What is good design?" when I did these works. I believe the most important factor in the design process is users.
