THE CITY STRIPED BY COLLAGED WALLS

Tutor : Park, Yong-Seo / School of Architecture KNU Buksung-ro is an old place where the modern history remaining. In the dawn of 20’s century, Chosun Dynasty opened to foreign intercourse and the Japanese Colonial perioud(1910 ~ 1945) started. Daegu was a walled city, but in 1908 it was destroyed by Japanese invaders. New boulevard ,which is now called Buksung-ro, was constructed where on the right place of the rampart was stand. This tragic affair was a starting point of modern city plan of Daegu. The Solid Line (Original ramparts) became a road as a Void Line (Buksung-ro, the modern boulevard) ,which makes the city’s boundary ambiguous. This project focused on how can we reuse the old buildings and deďŹ ne the relation between contemporary culture and modern buildings. This project was exhibited at the Kyungpook National University School of Architecture in September 2013.

SELFISH HOLDERS

Competition : Crystal Scale Prize 2012 / Special Selection with Kim, Jae-Jun What kind of architecture can accomodate the neo-prisoner ,who has escaped from the everyday life by himself? Our question terminated in this boutique hotel as a neo-prison where accomodate these people. Design a boutique hotel in the city was the theme of this project. Garosu-gil in Gang-nam district is a boulevard of shopping and rest. Various kind of retail shops are concentrated in this place and young people and travelers ďŹ nd here to enjoy the special scenery of it. Serosu-gil is a stretched roads from the Garosu-gil and it’s a rear side of main boulevard. Unique shops are opened here and it’s quite place. But people hardly ďŹ nd the hotel near the Garosu-gil due to sudden jump of foreign travellers in South Korea nowadays. We planned a hotel at the starting point of Garosu-gil and it will be a appropriate place for rest and meditate. Each rooms are connected with elevators directly and guests can get in to the room straight through the elevators from the hall. People can use the stairs ,which are connected incidentally to common spaces. This project was exhibited at the Korean Institute of Culture Architecture in November 2012.

VILNIUS JOURNEY

Tutor : Gintautas BlaĹžiĹŤnas / School of Architecture Vilnius Gediminas Technical University RaduĹĄkeviÄ?ians palace in the historical city of Vilnius is situated on the important location of city. Refurbishment for ofďŹ ce of Architectural Association Lithuania and preservation of beautiful facade of the palace is the main theme of project. The facade that isolated and lost it’s own original shape due to the construction of main street -KalvarijĹł road- ,which is result of modern development of Vilnius, is remain as a relic of Vilnius. The RaduĹĄkeviÄ?ians palace located on embankment is an important element for impression of riverside. The original palace was bigger than present situation. While the oldtown Vilnius designated as a UNESCO World Heritage property the ramnant of the palace completely left alone. Restoration of lost part of palace and a proper space for Architectural Association of Vilnius through refurbishment was requested. This project was exhibited for ArchitektĹŤrinÄ— renovacija(ARFU-11) class at the VGTU(Vilnius Gediminas Technical University) School of Architecture in Lithuania, December 2012.

ISLAND (RE)USES

Tutor : Kim, Sung-Woo / School of Architecture Seoul National University Korea is a peninsula surrounded by massive amount of small islands. For centuries, people ,who living in these islands, lived based on ďŹ shing and local trading. But rapid modernization drew the communities out from islands to cities and population of islands have been slowly declining. Nowadays, islands have been uninhabited and forgot. Recovering one of these islands -Anjwa islnad- is objective of this project and maximizing productivity of tidal at is the main issue. The island is very important place for our future food supply and tidal at ,where tremandous provision of the sea food, is a supplier of sea food for urban city life. My project focuced on the role of the tidal at for today’s society. The tidal at has a machanism ,operating two times of low and high tides every day, and I ďŹ nd a latency of the Anjwa island from this point. Fishermen go to the tidal at when low tide comes, and right before high tide comes, they return to the embankment. Fishermen return to embankment by using this nature force -low and high tide- with their prizes such as ďŹ shes, crabs, and shellďŹ shes. This machanism has been existed for millions of years. This project was exhibited at the Seoul National University School of Architecture in June 2012.

SPIRALS

Tutor : Lee, Jeong-Ho / School of Architecture KNU

HundertWasser ,who is artist ,architect and social activist simultaneously, had a special idea of nature. He thought nature has a number of layer ,changing everytime and containing a number of identities and latencies. In his idea architecture ,which is made by human, is special layer as same as the nature and changeable thing. The facade of the architecture must be changeble every time and Wasser tried to show this in his architecture. He placed some public designed artifacts on his architecture and these artifacts became epicenter of the local culture. Spiral is the core philosophy of his life and he believed eternal recurrence of life, death and nature. This project was exhibited at the Kyungpook National University School of Architecture in October 2010.

BIM PROJECTS

Professor : Choo, Seung-Yeon / School of Architecture KNU

I have studied BIM and Energy simulation including architectural design for last two uears in Digital Architectural Design Lab(DADL) in Kyungpook National University. DADL’s key objective is to ďŹ nd out the possibility of performance-based design in terms of architecture and technology simutaneously. My thesis is about correlation between the design of school building’s facade, constructed in 1960 to 1970’s in South Korea, and energy efďŹ ciency which is essential element for contemporary renovation design process. The next following projects were made at DADL, Kyungpook National University School of Architecture between 2014 and 2015.

01. Andong Healthcare Centre Competition Professor : Choo, Seung-Yeon / School of Architecture KNU

The client requested an additional health care centre as a local epicentre for citizens of Andong. As a result of aging phenomenon, people need more health care centre to prevent a disease as well as cure their illness. The design proposes compact and complex space. The building involves two functions of medical examination for patients and residence for nurses. As student of DADL, my responsibility included leadership in design development, collaborate with another students with graphics and visualizations, and Revit architecture 3D modelling. This projects were made at DADL, Kyungpook National University School of Architecture in 2014.

02. Private house in Kijang Professor : Choo, Seung-Yeon / School of Architecture KNU

The client requested a large single story house for his mother including his own weekend house in rural area of Busan. However, recently adjusted plot has a limited possibilities of single story hosing design due to its legislative principles, such as building to land ratio. Accordingly, two story house, involving clients weekend house in ďŹ rst oor, was suggested. As student of DADL, my responsibility included leadership in design development, desinging graphics and visualizations with Revit architecture 3D modelling, and discussing with client. This projects were made at DADL, Kyungpook National University School of Architecture in 2015.

03. Kinfork Competition : 10th Korean Rural Architecture Competition, UIA / Selected Prize Sari-Myeon residential and senior / junior centre for local people is a complex proposal. The target buildings, original warehouse and former kindergarten, have special image for local residents, since they have distinctive shape and scale over the area. We tried to preserve the original shape of the buildings monumentally and complement new hexagonal roofs in terms of the interpreted image of traditional Korean cottage ‘Cho-ga gip’ -small and round shaped with thatched roof house-. ‘Cho-ga gip’ exists with two phases of dark personal places and bright community places. Internal space is small and dark, whilst the brightness of outside, making inner space transparent. One space and two places. The freestanding walls which constructed on the site have a similar inner space with ‘Cho-ga gip’, and architectural systems such as ventilation and plumbing, are installed inside of these walls. The spaces between freestanding walls such like multipurpose halls have a bright inner space and make a transparency with outside through large system windows. The entrances of all centers are between spaces and elevated up to 450mm height for ‘Maru’ -traditional semi inner space with wooden floor- and people take off there shoes before enter. This projects were made at DADL, Kyungpook National University School of Architecture in 2015.
