EMBEDED & INLAYS Art-Gallery Studio Director:Jenny Wu & Daywne Oyler Academic Work 05.2016

Site locates in Palm Spring, a desert town near Los Angles. This design is a method-oriented design, we use two ways to create the main form: intert several cutting objects into the object and boolean the left part; put one section object to create an architectural central space, that's how we call it Embeded & Inlays.

Background Information The client bought a former factory in Putuo District , northwest in Shanghai, and want us to reconstruct the old buildings into a new art center. Since the client is a porcelain merchant, he wished the new art center to be build with a concept related to porcelian. I was fully responsible for the former dormitory of the workers, which will be rebuild as the new theme hotel of the art center. The old dormitory is in the Southwest of the site, as is marked red in the picture.

Breaking the porcelain into debris. One simple object turns into complicated pieces.

By picking out the curve pieces, I put them onto the foam board,so that they can stand up and create different kind of space.

Then,delineate the shape of the curve pieces, in ord e r t o o b s e r ve t h e i n ter-space well.

“What if we make all the pieces came from one or two cones? This can make the structure doable in architecture space.

Finally, the pieces will be simplified into chips of circles. The next question is ,how to divide these circles.

Cut out the tiny cracking foldings and smooth the edges if the pieces.

Simplify the sphere pieces into cone pieces, so that the pieces can be structures stand by themselves.

The two drawings of WASSILY KANDINSKY inspire me to draw these circles , according to the leading lines created b section points of the circles and columns. The circles create the curve walls which stand for the fragments of the porce selves well.

BETWEEN THE WALLS Revive of a dilapidated site Academic work Time: Ninth semester,2014 Location: Damanong Street, Hangzhou, China Collaborator: Li Hongjie Tutor: Pro. Hua Chen

This work was based on a research about No.60 Damanong street required by the local government. The outcome of the questionnaire answered by the residents show that this site cannot be used as a residential place any longer. So we decided to make it into a tea house with Mahjong Room inside, while enjoy the pedestrian volume the markets brought, block the negative influence of the noise and smell.

"Cannot bear this living condition any more!We wanna move out!"

Site is located just near a food market, which brought a huge pedestrian flowrate to the streets. Almost all the residents can meet with their neighbors here. However, pedestrian also bring the site a lot of noise every day, the meat shops around the area are also smelly.

The present houses in the site are in poor condition, the wood structure have been rotted, and roofs start to leak in water while raining days. Due to the high surroundings, there isn't too much sunlight in the site. Lacking basic living space, most residents have built up illegal temporary huts, which made the public space narrow and crowded.

The Walls Concept Illustration Walls are common elements in traditional Chinese dwellings. We have walls to help block the outside and create a relative private space, we also use the walls to divide space, creating the room and courtyard. There is two interesting thing about the Chinese walls: The first one is “KUANGJING“. In Chinese dwellings, walls can also create landscapes, using different sizes of windows as frames of the courtyard scenery. That is what we call”KUANGJING” in Chinese. It is one of the typical landscape design methods of tradition Chinese dwellings. The second thing is “JIN“. This means he space between the parallel walls. Different “JIN“ may have different functions. As the number of the “JIN“ increases, the privacy is becoming better and better. So we use these two functions of the walls as our concept. We divided the site into eight “JING“ according to the surrounding urban texture, and block the noise and smell from the markets by making the first “JIN“ the inlet courtyard in the house.

By realizing the two concept of the walls, we are also able to reconstruct the typical Chinese traditional space in the design. The circulation pattern and the way courtyards appear in front of our eyes. We also analyse three tyipical patterns of traditional circulation and sight, and rebuild the traditional spaces. We decide to study and abstract the patterns first and then transform them in a more concise way.

CIRCLE-SCRAPER Site locates on Roosevelt Island, just next to Four-Freedom Parl. And the office-park building is aimed to be three different companies' headquater. Park and amenities are added to improve the employees' working environment.

25th Precinct Station House Station House Studio Director: Jeanne Gang Academic Work 12.2015 Research done by Tracey L. Meares, indicates that the community that members know each other better will have a lower crime rate. Due to this argument, I am trying to creat a station house that would help the community members can randomly meet with each other and become familiar. When crime rate decreases and the station house becomes a place that everyone would like to go, the relationship between community and police will also improve. The site locates at east Harlemt in Manhattan.

Partition Walls: The most common and efficient way to devide a large area. The interior space keeps good privacy and clos ed feeling. Domes: Dome itself can de vide space as well as being structu re.The spcae insi de is always open, but the shape also gives the feeling of enclosure.

Second Floor

Arches: A beautiful form of structure, but har dly define a certa in space.People in side will not feel that they stay in a room. That might be why it is usually used in corridor.

Police House: Corridors and seperate ro oms Efficency and safety is alw ays the first consideration in a police station design. The Police need a clear cir culation to work.

Community House: Interacting rooms The interacting rooms are just space created for pe ople to know each other more.Even they come for different department in the building, they can sit and chat in the interacting roo ms.
