[ EMPATHY ]

The ultimate meaning of any building is beyond aechiticture: it directs our consciousness back to the world and towards our won sense of self and being. —— Pallasmaa <The Eyes Of The Skin>

Empathy is a concept in the field of psychology and here I'd like to use it to express people's common sensibility to space. No matter what kind of cultural genes, human beings have similar feelings for a particular space and have their own hidden emotional experiences, which are the basis of empathy. When technological advance enables us to replicate a large number of functional buildings, people often lose the perception of space instinct which does really touch. In fact, I am less concerned with the physical form of architecture but more care about its emotional connotations and the possibility of events. I hope people can feel the breath of the building, to touch its skin, to walk in its cavity. When its presence touching people's responses, that's the power of empathy flowing.

01 PARADISE LOST - Immersive Theatre Tarragona, Spain Instructor: Wenbo Ni 2019-Summer Individual Work

In <The Eyes Of The Skin>, it is stated that human beings gradually established the dominant position of vision in perception during evolution, while other cognitive methods (including but not limited to touch, smell, hearing and sense of direction) fade away. That making human's perception level become single and incomplete. The development of entertainment industry also reflects this feature. The decline of theater and the rise of film reflects that modern people's cognition is more flat and digital after experiencing the information explosion. Whether it is drama or space, when visual cognition dominates, it makes me reflect on how our original perceptual abilities can be awakened. For this project, I chose a series of films as the script to translate the plots and sub-scenes in space, creating a unique immersive theater rooted in the plot. The connection between the actor and the audience is no longer invisible contact from the lens to the screen, but the real breathing of the repressed smell, the touch of the rough texture, the exploration of the unknown sense of direction... I think only immersive integration into the environment can bring the most real touch. What space should do is to provide a place for emotional fermentation.

Base: Corbera d’Ebre, Terra Alta, Tarragona Corbera d'Ebre is a municipality in the comarca of la Terra Alta in Catalonia, Spain. It is one of the 12 municipalities comprising the wine-growing region of the Spanish Denominación de Origen classification of the Spanish wine Terra Alta.

Wine Chateau

The town was completely destroyed during the Battle of the Ebro (25 July–16 November 1938) and although the lower part of the town was rebuilt, the upper part, known as Poble Vell (Old Town), including the old church on the hill, has been kept as a reminder.

Ruins of the Old Church

Spanish Civil War

Site: Old Church The base is located in a small town in Spain. The entire village was destroyed due to the civil war. Only the ruins remain. The town has rich cultural deposits but relies on agriculture and wine industry to develop its economy. The original church (Esglesia DE Sant Pere) has long lost its original architectural structure and cultural connotation. The old church was structurally reinforced by a team to provide basic active space. This project intends to establish an underground immersive theater based on the context of the site and the spirit of the old church, preserving the church ruins as the entrance and exit of the immersive theater. On the one hand, the combination of senses and drama is discussed under the proper architectural foundation. On the other hand, it also brings new vitality to the lonely tourism industry with new forms of drama. 03

Script: Alien Alien series is a successful commercial film. The director Ridley Scott used sound and visual cues with great precision to create the classic horror image. However, apart from the thrilling plot, hidden behind the visual satisfaction, what really touches people's hearts is the film itself asking the question of religion (creation) : does the creator really exist? This spiritual core is closely related to the birth and destruction of the religion. In series, <Prometheus> and <Covenant> tell the story of Human searching for the creator and witness of the new creation process of artificial intelligence as creator. The script of <Paradise Lost> will reorganize the two films' story structure, each plot will take place in a space with different characteristics and the script's timeline will be connected by actors' moving lines. Only in this church, which itself had a strong spirituality but was abandoned functionally, could it be possible two use the primitive senses to recognize movement, direction, speed and time. So I chose this episodic and thoughtful religious fable as the script for immersive theater. The audience is expected to follow the actors in the dark, isolated underground theater to participate in a dramatic performance, and then, out of the old church, in the strong sunlight to re-awaken the soul of thinking.

02 Kingdom of Foods - Sanyuanli Market Rebuild Zuojiazhuang, Beijing, China Instructor: Wenbo Ni 2019-Winter Individual Work

The development of online economy has greatly affected our daily consumption habits. Generation Z's online consumption ratio is much higher than that of physical consumption. When we click on the mobile phone, we can place a quick order on apps, and food delivery can be delivered to our door. Is there any meaning in the existence of food markets, supermarkets and clothing stores below the line? That's what I'm thinking about: how to make every purchase feel ritualistic. The base is located in a food market in central Beijing, where residents supply food from all over the world because of its proximity to the embassy district. Such a market due to the space constraints the space experience is poor: shopkeepers squatted in their own small stalls, sellers choose materials and just hurried away... In reality, however, what a wonderful thing to buy food, where we can touch the tender asparagus, smell the delicious scent from sausage and taste the palatefull cheese, all of which the modern people accustomed to online consumption will forget. I observed and recorded the change of people flow in the market in a day, and created highlights for the market through the change of sunlight. In Sanyuanli market, people can process their food directly, visit the growing process of plants, and buy seafood as if they were visiting an aquarium. Creating a sense of experience is the new vitality of physical consumption!

Location Analysis Sanyuanli market is located in the third ring road of Beijing. There are many residential communities around, and the south side is adjacent to the Beijing embassy district and many high-end hotels. Foreigners from the embassy district come to buy different food from their hometowns, chefs from the surrounding high-end restaurants come in the early morning to buy various ingredients, and even many citizens come from far away on weekends. Progress Diagram One reason the Sanyuanli market has survived Beijing's strict policies is that it sells food in huge abundance. Foods from all over the world can be sold within the 165 meters. Therefore, in the Sanyuanli market, residents often have access to many ingredients they have never heard of. Behind these ingredients are exotic cultures, and their production and practices have been orally popularized in the Sanyuanli market, so it is a veritable museum of species. Market

03 Art Invasion - Gated Residential Community Rebuild Wangjing, Beijing, China Instructor: Wenhao Ding 2019-Autumn Individual Work

The theme of this project is: "Architecture Negotiation" between Subculture and Mainstream space. I chose independent artists as a subcultural group, trying to challenge the traditional use of gated communities through the invasion of art.The two sides of the negotiation have their own problems: the old communities from 1980s are facing homogenization and aging population; Besides, independent artists lost their creating places due to economic pressure. During the negotiation, the space and the passenger flow demand of artists is in conflict with the privacy demand of other tenants. The game between the two sides includes their own interests and problems: how can artists break through the blockade of physical boundaries? How do visitors overcome the perception barrier? How do inhabitants face the eyes from the street and the urban? I did not focus on the result of the negotiation, but expressed a possible development process, which simulated the growth process of a spontaneous art area from three progressive levels of "room", "building" and "community". When architects proposed the prototype based on the genetic conditions, the government, social organizations, individuals even the media gradually participated, affecting the physical shape of the community. Regardless of whether the community will revive and decline under the influence of the art industry to the end, a high degree of participation of citizens is a truly meaningful social issue. The "autonomous artchitecture" in the process may be the most appropriate form of the community.

In the process of urban-rural integration, the dilemma of the demolition of the art district has become a microcosm in the process of Beijing's eastward expansion. After the failure of the "Mild Winter" (2009-2010 art zone rights protection plan), most of the more than 20 self-formed art parks, including Cui Gezhuang township, have long ceased to exist. However, the remaining 798 or Distillery Art Park was gradually commercialized. With the replacement of capital, galleries, bars and shops, gradually eliminating the original artist studios. As a result, more and more independent artists are forced to move away due to economic, policy and other reasons, and the context of our discussion is based on this. Besides the SongZhuang model (physically flat development), is there more urban space that can be used as a petri dish for art? When artists move into old high-rise communities as cultural activation points, would they bring new faces to the expressionless gated communities? Would there be new features for ageing residents and mobile tenants?

Art college is an active point in the community, which constantly generating new art groups, bringing possibilities for cultural industry in Wangjing area.

High-rise apartments have become the most common building type in Chinese cities, which is particularly prominent in the rapid development process of Wangjing districtin. After nearly 20 years of development, Wangjing district has been divided by closed residential communities, forming aw homogeneous and repetitive urban image. Wanghua Road Community was built in the 1990s which formed a unique spatial temperament. The high-rise, enclosed and fluid against the backdrop of the surrounding fine arts academy and commercial buildings, is a suitable petri dish for the development of art.

04 Recall Pagoda - Hutong Micro Update Xicheng district, Beijing Instructor: Fan Lu 2019-Winter Team Work Responsible for: Site Research(40%), Concept(50%),Modeling(80%), Drawing(60%)

The White Tower has a long history and has witnessed the rise and fall of Buddhism in China. It is a cultural symbol of Beijing. However, with the explosive growth of Beijing's urban population, the surrounding texture of the city has been destroyed, and residents have been unable to see the White Tower. The original Beijing courtyard has become a shantytown of unfamiliar tenants. We ask: what role should religion play in a modern community? We hope that by reconstructing the visual connection between the community and the White Tower, we can recall the spiritual influence of the White Tower on the hutong. According to the building density and the sight relationship with the White Tower, we classified the city typologically and put forward relevant strategies respectively. In terms of urban design means, we choose Point, Line, Plane, and combine the corresponding height difference to create a richer experience of hutong life with traditional functions. On the basis of the original building texture, the transformation and addition of the White Tower area to achieve a micro-update.
