As a German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche once said, “And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music.”From this statement ‘Dance’ is a performance that expresses performers’ emotions and stories by simple but delicate body movements, hence, without words, audiences can explore a whole new world.

N owadays, street dance becomes one of the most popular dance styles in the world. Unlike other dance

styles, the spirit of street dance allows dancers to walk out of traditional stages and find their own stages in the city.

DANCER & DJ AUDIENCE

PARTY

In the street dance industry nowadays, it is not only a dancing activity for dancers, but also a full process that involves music making, training, performance, costume, and exhibition. In my thesis project, I tried to create a new form of performance and training center for street dancers in the city that gathered all of their needs while they could still find their original spirit of liberty.

BATTLE

The project used the space elements derived from the analysis of a representative dancers’ movements, and different prototypes of street dance performance in a city environment as spatial notation to choreograph on the site.

4.Used the “space form” element to form volumes and created various scales of spaces for different uses.

SPACE RHYTHM To develop the project, there are were 4 kinds of main elements being used for the space choreograph as architecture ways.

5.Added on steel structures between buildings to create stages for temporary performances.

1. Space Nodes--Lighting for public activities 2. Space Frames--Structure system 3. Space Forms--Buildings for indoor use 4. Space Rhythms--Main circulation

The Chaoma bus station project was a 2 month-studio of

construction study in the 4th grade at Tunghai university. In the first 2 weeks, the project started from analyzing an individual abstract art work, afteranalyzing the art work by mimicking model, everyone had to decide a construction system which could mostly represent the original study.

Folded plate structure rooftop

I-bim and steel column

In the second phase of the studio, students had to utilize the construction system which they chose to address with real problems in the city-massive transportations, public activities, physical environment, etc. In this project, folded plate structure was the main structural system. By creating a continued space, passengers could fluently recognize the circulation of the bus station, which was more convenient and efficient for them to catch on their bus. The folding rooftop also provided special space experience by refracting natural lights and made it more recognizable for passengers in the city.

T he single housing project iwas located in an alley next to one of the most crowded shopping areas in Taichung City,

DISTANCE

Taiwan.

USERS

The street of the site is filled with creative shops that sell designed clothes and artificial art works that require public attention and places to be shown out.

Since there are many tourists and students who often visit the area, a lot of young people open their own shops and art studios within the alley. The project aimed to create a community for those young shop owners, whether how far they originally lived, every individual in the community could possess their own living unit combining with their own shop and resident. Moreover, the public space in the community could be employed as fashion runway during some specific seasons. Therefore, all of residents in the community could present their own works and products to promote their own shop.

CONTEXT

fashion runway

Since most of shop owners are living far from their working places. It is more efficient for their lives by to integrate their living needs and work needs.

The corridor between buildings provides a stage for people to exhibit their work.

The unit of this project was formed by traditional building type of Taiwan that was built beside the site. The slope of rooftop created loft spaces and provided more opportunities for sunlight to come in.

By combining users, context and distance requirements, The prototype of one unit in the community eventually represents the efficiency of residents’ life.

In the exchange program of CEU San Pablo University,

students had to attend for a 6-months project by designing a winery. The project started from designing a wine bottle within a month, which could introduce the basic knowledge of wine production process in Spain to the students from different cultures.

WINE PRODUCTION SYSTEM TANK ROOM

The main project was actually comes after the first month, students had to design a winery. The site is located in one of the representative wine hometowns in Spain-La Rioja.

BARREL STORAGE

In this project, the way people dealed with the relation between nature and the wine production chain was very crucial. For my design, three volumes were placed between the river and the field that represented the cycle of wine’s life-from grapes to bottles. Furthermore, volumes were lower at the river part to show humble through the nature, which could also create a comfortable corridor for visitors to enjoy their wines beneath the river.

Can a fabric own the property of stones? In the project Stubborn Soft Playground the boundary between soft and hard materials is starting to be challenged.

The project started from a personal drawing by every student that enrolled in the studio, each student had to find the material that most matched with their drawings, and tried to make a 1 : 1 installation to talk about the stories of their own study. In this project, several experiments were used to find out how to demonstrate opposite properties on fabrics. After those studies, the fabric was hung in a forest for public activities, due to the combination of different materials, the fabric could provide multiple space experiences for users. The hierarchy of light penetration and diversity of height it created provide a special playground for passengers.

SOFT-HARD

HARD-SOFT

In the SOFT TO HARD experiment, I picked two kinds of soft materials-paper and stockings as the body that were going to be changed in their properties by muds and ink penetration. When the penetration happened, some larger particles would coagulate on upper part of the fabrics. Due to the difference of thickness, lights would penetrate in diverse strengths, hence, created a special sequence of shadow.

In the HARD TO SOFT experiment, I tried to use fabric as the mold to cast concrete, as the result, the concrete piece demonstrated the stretchable visual effect as fabrics., However, it still kept its own load bearing ability.

In the one-month workshop in Rome, local Italian archi-

tects spent 2 weeks taking students to walk around the city in order to expand students’ realization of Italian culture and indigenous architecture thought. After two weeks of walking tour, participants had to work as a team to create a praying center by collage and model making. The designing project “IL SEGRETO GIARDINO” means “The Saint Garden”, which is the main concept of the work. The project was located in a tourist center of Rome which is surrounded by ancient city wall relic. The location provides a desirable context for people to separate themselves from the bustling city. In the design, we utilized white marble as the material to create a shorter wall around the original relic. In contrast with the huge and cultural city wall, the new wall showed the humbleness of diverse religions in its scale and pithy form. Moreover, we planted multiple scales of local pine trees as the icon of ancient chapel dome, which could also create favorable condition for users.

D

uring 2016, I had a chance to work in Hsu Dan-Ho Architects as a designer, which allowed me to face the practical world of architecture. The project “JIENXING FONGHUANG was a 6-month individual work, which is under construction now, and it will be finished around 2018 summer. This building was designed as a dormitory for students, since the site is located in a tiny area, designers had to face the limitation of scale but they still created enough spaces for resident use. Therefore, in the design, each residential unit has its own balcony and restroom, furthermore, the public circulation is placed as the center core of the building, in order to create minimum public use and maximum private spaces. On the other hand, the facade of the building was designed by different materials, in contrast with other buildings in the community, showing the energy of students.

Tunghai Architecture in Rome

ABOUT ME

During my academic life in Tunghai University, I had learned the way to solve problems for others with logic and creative methods. Fortunately, I also had a chance to travel the world as a dancer and an architecture student, consequently, those experiences sprout my mind on improving myself by learning from different cultures. After I graduated, I had been working in a very diverse industry-movie making, architecture, lighting design, real estate, community rebuilding...etc. All of them did not only require knowledge from college but also the ability of integrating different technics as a whole. Furthermore, based on my work experience as a freelancer, I had a chance to create a freelance application with my friends, although the entrepreneurial attempt did not really work due to some factors, that experience still helped me finds my inadequacy on my idea accomplishment. Hence, I decide to give myself a chance on improving my knowledge and skills by studying abroad.
