BACKGROUND

Problems faced by Homeless in Taiwan.

There was a strong public stigmatization (especially media.) against the homeless people. The homeless were marginalized in social welfare policies.

They are not considered to be underprivileged groups that result in reducing the rate of the reintegration.

How to help the homeless people to get back to a stable life? What is the key to getting back to a stable life?

SHIN-EN CHIEN

DESIGN PROCESS

User Research - Exploration and Analysis Data were collected through secondary data, quantitative and qualitative data, then find the non-profit service gap and what the homeless need immediately. User Experience Design - Concept Transformation Transforming the qualitative data set into to design point then create an early prototype version of a website and app.

User Experience Test Test the feasibility and viability of the early prototype. Tests reveal insights that redefine the problem.

User Experience Design - Improve According to the first prototype, we take notes and collect user feedback to improve our design.

User Experience Test Test the second prototype, and see if the improved iteration works better. Keep gathering feedback, iterating our prototype, and then test to see if it works.

USER RESEARCH - PROBLEMS Through the secondary data, in-depth interviews with the ten homeless and three nonprofit organizations. We find the non-profit service gap and requirement of the homeless.

Nonprofit organization service gap : Lack of life skills training Lack of adaptation in social work practice Lack of supervision Hard to erase the social stigma

The homeless who have particular work skills in the nonprofit organization : Lack of social value Lack of social connections No opportunity to use their technical skills The factors of social changing, physical discomfort, personal factors, etc., make them homeless, but they are very willing to develop the skills to help others, from which to gain a sense of achievement.

The homeless who have no particular work skills in the nonprofit organization : Lack of social value Lack of work skills Hard to accumulate wealth Have enthusiasm for learning, but due to the unfriendly working environment, and the slow progress of learning; however learning in the organization, the environment is relatively friendly, therefore they may be more willing to try to learn new skills.

SHIN-EN CHIEN

12

CONCEPT TRANSFORMATION - DESIGN GOAL It is much easier for a homeless person to get back to a stable life when they don’t have to worry about where to sleep and what to eat every day. Some people experiencing homelessness do not have life skills, either because they never acquired them or because they lost them through extended periods of homelessness. Helping people experiencing homelessness acquire life skills can keep them away from homelessness and resettle into the community.

BACKGROUND

Problems faced by Retired Seniors.

Have a difficult time adjusting to what they perceive as a life without purpose.

Social isolation can lead to depression and cause seniors to withdraw.

A lack of motivation to access exercise facilities often causes seniors to the risk of bone loss.

As we are entering an aging society, the health and well-being of the elderly need more attention.

SHIN-EN CHIEN

32

How might we ‌‌ Through the virtual pet to promote the retired seniors to enhance sports continuity and to improve the quality of life after retirement.

DESIGN PROCESS Motivation The market has now multiple fitness applications and trackers for different types of users. Some of the recommended fitness applications for the elderly are MyFitnessPal, Pocket Yoga, and Tai Chi for Seniors but none of this provides a way to help with the void of socialization and caregiving that elderly people face every day.

USER STUDY Target users Localize the elders from Taiwan. Age around 60, already retired, and adults aged around 50 who are preparing for their after-retirement life. Purpose of our interview To explore the expected social life for elders when their children are working away from home, and furthermore, to understand their social needs with the goal of improving the quality of life after retirement. // Interviews were structured into three parts // 1. Daily routines: What kind of things they found unaccustomed to or things you really liked? Describe the biggest differences in your life before and after retirement. 2. Social life: Which social activities you usually did? What topics you talked about with friends, and also your usage and expectations of a social application. 2. Spend time: When your children were working away from home, therefore what kind of things you did if you’ve got to spend time with their children.

Interview results They often tend to follow a daily routine rather than seek for changes. Most of them do exercise such as jogging or strolling in order to stay healthy. However, this comes with a limited effect as they don’t follow good exercise habits. They want to be caregiving rather than caretaking since they do not want to become a burden to others. They prefer to interact with others face-to-face, as it feels more real for them. They feel that they should contribute to the society in their limited time.

SHIN-EN CHIEN

34

CONCLUDE OUR USER STUDY Elders’ mental state of refusing to become a burden to their family. Unable to maintain their physical health, partly because they didn’t manage to build up good health habits before and after retirement.

Pain Points Do not have an exercise plan and proper nutritional knowledge. Don't have a partner to do exercise. No motivation to keep doing exercise. Value proposition The elders hope to maintain their physical health in order to not become a burden of their children, and thus think that they need to find something to do and exercise regularly after retirement.

DESIGN GOALS AND METHODS We hope to facilitate a social activity for the elderly that brings less psychological burden for them.

The service will cooperate with Sports center and we’ll survey the elderly to know which sports courses they need the most.

Our service is an app. All of them will be supported to co-cultivate the virtual pets. The virtual pets will be accompanied by them during exercise.

In the process of the exercise, the “fitpetner” will give a prize, such as sports curriculum coupons and restaurant coupons.

35
