Pierre Louis-Costes spends more than six months a year away from his homestead in Aquitaine, France. The southwestern metropolitan region lies on the fringe of the great Atlantic Ocean and Spain’s border. Once upon a time the land was celebrated for its unrefined and overabundant gold resources. A curious capacity for unearthing nature’s finer gifts must have been passed down the bloodline. Just how many 19-year-old French bodyboarders that you know lock rail into Box bombs like Pierre?

Have you ever wondered just how many inverts it might’ve taken for MR to reach the sort of style and fluidity he’s oozing here at Rocky Point? 1000? 10,000? 20,000? more? While we could try crunch the numbers based on average inverts per surf, and surfs per year, fact is it’ll always be wrong. And who really wants a false fact? What we do perceive is that ever-airborne Mitch has lofted more inverts in his lifetime than he’s had hot dinners.

me to the new school. With nothing but a few household appliances (an electric carving knife and an iron), a block of polyethylene, and a little knowledge of surfboard schematics, on July 7, 1971, Mr. Tom Morey sat down in his shed and began whittling away at the world’s first Morey “Boogie”. Though in its earliest stages, Morey’s genius design was both practical and revolutionary. Drawing similarities to its fibre-glassed counterpart, it also brought new and different wave-riding possibilities for the average beach-goer.

Now, drawing at the same inspiration of legendary Mr. Morey, 71’s taken the practical printed magazine format and fused it with a new digital layout. The progression of technology, like the progression of the bodyboard design and the technical advancements in the sport itself, has allowed for us to bring all the modern multimedia tools to the table: video, animation, sound and interaction. As bodyboards have given us all a means to get involved with the ocean, now 71 is providing anyone with an Internet connection the chance to be influenced by modern bodyboarding. In essence, 71’s a digital journal for the modern bodyboarder. The primary ambition is to illustrate contemporary bodyboarding as a united whole – from the groms in club comps, to local shredders and the professionals. It’s the collective efforts of a bunch of creative fellas from across Australia and the world over who share a single passion. Without the works of our talented contributors we’d have nothing but a blank canvas. For your hard work, we thank you all. And with that, we’ll leave an open invitation for any media-savvy lad to contribute shots, stories, reports, or videos. Send your multimedia package to editorial@71mag.com and we’ll take your talents to the masses. We hope you enjoy our first issue as much as we enjoyed making it. The 71 Team.

19-year-old Adrian Harper’s a Sydneysider with a hatful of talent and some real promise. Maturing in the playful Northern Beaches, and soaking up the energy of local legends like the Player bros and Chris James, has bestowed the youngster with a fast, clean-cut technique and a sponsorship deal with foam giants LMNOP. Recently touring the temperate Balinese set-ups, Adrian’s now roaming the east coast of Oz filming for PJ Hadley’s up-coming podcast series, Hanus. Knowing little more, 71 tracked down Harper to test his character with some random prompts.

Full name: Adrian Kevin Harper. Age: 19. Location: Narrabeen, Sydney. Local: Little Narra. Sponsors: BSC, VU clothing, LMNOP bodyboards & Stealth fins. Set-up: 39.5” Dow Novy, 39.5” PP Jake Stone, black Stealth fins, ZION Trinity wetsuit. When and where did you start out? Flapping into closeouts at North Narrabeen about five years ago, until the locals sent me on my way. I then moved ’round the corner to Little

Go to contents.

Narra and I’ve been there ever since. Partners in crime: Just the fellas. May, Rob, Toby, Liam, Moody and Chris James. And the local groms like Martin Smith and Seb Miller. Where do you look for inspiration? Jono Bruce and Nick Gornall. Favourite move: Flips. Favourite type of wave: Wedge. What sucks? No money. No waves. Lack of sun. What’s rad? Money, waves, getting pissed, chicks, two for one at Subway, Mona pub and The Bounty

(Nightclub in Kuta). Who’s ripping? The usual guys like Jake Stone and Novy. Jono too. But locally Martin Smith’s been killing the comps, as well as Tim Bond. Alex Wilkie and Nick Perry are always shredding it up. Hottest chick you’ve seen: Majority of the girls on Kuta Beach. Best band/artist to invite to your 18th: Band would have to be Dangerous! But Dr Dre would be pretty fucking sick as well.

Had any near-death experiences out in the ocean? Nothing really, just the usual shark scares. Best contest result to date: Never been in one. When you’re not bodyboarding you’re most likely doing: Tanning, chilling with mates or getting loose. New maneuver you’re working on: The 720. Who’s going to be the next World Champ from the teens and twenties bracket? PLC (Pierre Louis-Costes), he’s a combo freak.

tyson. Tyson Ryan needs a little luck. A good win on the pokies, even a meat tray courtesy of the local RSL might just set him straight. Though the 19-year-old Sunny Coaster certainly isn’t lacking any good fortune when it comes to throwing tail, a few setbacks with cars and cash flow have been keeping things relatively quiet this year. And for a guy who surfs as fast and frantic as his favourite Rock riffs, staying calm and collected in Marcus Beach isn’t ideal. Nevertheless, a new job soil testing with his wily crew has allowed Ty to book a maiden trip to Hawaii. And suddenly things aren’t looking that bad at all.

Go to contents.

Full name: Tyson Alexander Ryan. Age: 19. Location: Marcus Beach. Local: Everywhere on “The Strip”. Sponsors: Turbo Surf Designs & Eppo’s Bodyboardshop. Stance: Natural. Best set-up: A board with no gimmicks, bluntcut fins, a gnarly Billabong wettie, and cut-off boardies.

Best reef set-up: The Rock. Best music to get you amping: Death to all but metal! Best possession you own: An old school Hard Rock Café LA t-shirt. Best woman to bed: Unsophisticated ladies. Best beer to get you talking trash: XXXX Bitter. Best attire to induce laughter: A red wig, a tutu and one pissed dero. Best vehicle to get the job done: Barrat’s car, “The Flap”. Best surf destination you’ve been to: South Coast. Best at throwing tail: Roach.

Best DVD part you’ve seen lately: Jakey Stone pissed singing Metal Skool on the Riptide DVD. Best way to kill time: Having a laugh with mates. Best Friday night fun: Thrashing my pissed body to Rock ‘n’ Roll with my mates, getting tally-ups and having a laugh about it the next day when you’re feeling like Dylan (Lee). Best grease feast following ≈forementioned Friday night: Dirty bird. Best approach to tearing on the knee: Not giving a shit what anyone else thinks.

Jimmy always sports a smile that stretches ear-to-ear. We both deliver Chinese at the same shoebox of a store, and even if he gets skunked with a delivery way out west there’s never any neg talk, he just waltzes out the door smirking. One of these days I’m gunna throw a steamed Dim Sim at him and see what happens... Like so many of the Goldy’s up-and-comers Jimmy’s got all the tech moves at his disposal. Once the lad fills in his still-growing, teenage frame we expect he’ll be throwing down some sizable hammers. Ladies and gents, Mr. Williamson.

Go to contents.

Full name: Jimmy Richard Williamson. Age: 17. Location: North Burleigh Gold Coast. Local: “North”. Sponsors: No Friends, BSC & Pride Bodyboards. Set-up: 40” Woodland Pride, black Stealth fins, Tiki wetty, BSC leash. Years on the bodyboard: Would be coming up to four years now. Starting out: Everyone around me was getting into it and I had friends who lived nearby who were always keen, so peer-pressure I guess. Surfing ’round home: First check would usually be the closest reef

down south, and then working my way back up the coast ’til I find something rideable. In the backseat: Usually surf with little Thorpe and James Meth, or whoever else is keen! Today’s conditions: Surfed “End Wedge” this morning. It was a fun, clean two-to-three foot, but it was a public holiday so crowds were stockstandard Goldy material. Current rippers: Thorpe, of course. He always surfs consistently well. And Jordan Putland AKA “Cutty” has been surfing insane of late. Move for a bowling section: Oh, I’d have to call a back flip.

Dream job: Professional bodyboarder. Current job: Chinese food delivery. Dream location: West oz. Current location: Gold Coast. Dream girl: Milf. Current girl: Single, but working on it. Five favourites from your iPod: Skidrow, Black Sabbath, Motley Crue, Iggy Pop and Danzig. Rights or lefts: Depends. Generally rights, but not too fussed. Religion: Hell no. Travel plans: West Oz in a few weeks and then NZ at the end of the year. Thanks to: NF, BSC and Pride for always helping me out.

BREAKDOWN. seq | alex ormerod

Go to contents.

For our maiden issue we're going to take you every bodyboarder should have in their repertoire. We’ll shot during a recent mission to the Barrier Reef with the

through bashing out a good reverse hack, a move be using the fine work of Damien King as our example; e Ormerod clan. Step 1 | Belting it.

So, first thing’s first – let’s discuss approaching your target. For the reverse hack the best type of section to hit is a foamy lip or a clean wall. Speed is a must. This type of move is executed best with plenty of power, so drive hard and long off your bottom turn. At this stage all weight, emphasis and momentum should be gathering on the inside rail. Hit your section with force and finesse. All that drive you’ve gathered off the bottom-turn should now be transferring to your outside rail – as you can see in frame one. Pull your legs up and out of the water. Folding them into a tight cross will aid your momentum and thrust, but also stylise the trick. Notice how Kingy’s torso has slid up his board from frames one to two. Nailing this weight transfer will stop you bogging and have your tail throwing some water.

2nd stage | Keeping it balanced

This brings us to the second stage of the reverse, the most crucial. You need to be almost perfectly centered on your board. If the weight distribution is slightly off, you’ll likely find yourself catching a rail or your tail. Look at Kingy’s head position in frames four, five and six. His eyes are always looking ahead scanning the section and mapping out his direction. Important to note in six is that the large muscle groups – the torso, arms and back – are all pushing down on the nose to keep the tail out.

3rd stage | Riding out.

Now we’re into the final stage – the landing. Almost there. In frame seven and eight you can see King has started to shift his body gradually into the normal prone position. Now his weight has started to shift back towards the tail as he rides out the final 70 degrees. Make sure you maintain a firm grip of your board as often the end of the spin is the most testing. And that’s just about curtains. You’ve learned the reverse bash, and now it’s time to put it to use. Go out and have a shred.

“Winny has the ability to adapt to whatever situation he is placed in and make it look effortless. From his early years he was all about fast-living, good times with the boys and global travel nailing good video-parts and shots, he dominated. Then he moved onto the competitive period on the world stage where he has progressively being in the thick of it as a World Title threat. A year off to settle into his love life and start a family seemed to slow Fever down in some of his loose ways, but more so strengthen his ability in the water and bring his focus on becoming the best person possible for his two favourite girls, Amy and Coco. It’s heavy; he seems to make the thought of having a kid easy. He has always stood out, but it seems more than ever there’s even more power in his punch. It shows in his comp results, images and clips he just keeps stacking up.” – Jose Marquina, fellow shredder and compadre.

“Dave gets the job done whether it’s two feet or 12 feet. He is by far the most consistent rider I work with. Give him a wedging bowl and he’ll bust any move you ask him to. Heavy pits? He’s already driving hard off the bottom drawing clean lines. He’s just such an easygoing guy to travel with, and I like dealing with guys who know that this is a job and when it’s time to work, it’s time to actually work! There was a stage when I called Dave “the apprentice” as we traveled, but now he’s a full-blown guru.” – Phil Gallagher, friend and sharp shooter.

up here. I’ve never seen it. I was skeptical. Maybe I’m just jealous. Maybe my mates are lairs or frothers. Maybe, just maybe the place had cranked for one all-time day and I’d foolishly blown it again for another loveless New Year’s Eve on the piss.

Fed up with hearing the hype, and surfing the place apparently “below average”, I decided for the first swell of September I wasn’t going to fucken blow it. South Straddie was the call going round. And as expected it pumped. Me, I wasn’t wholehearted in committing to the crowds and severe sunburn that awaits its inhabitants beyond the wall. I was keen to try something different; throw my eggs in the basket I’d written-off so many times before. And so I did. My first session of the September swell at the wedge was good. It inspired sessions, two and three. However, number four kept a grin on my face long after I’d left the water. I had returned to grommet-hood, and what a glorious feeling it was. I even enjoyed delivering Chinese that night. That never happens.

Let me tell you a little of the place. The set-up is postcard material. Dolphins are dime-a-dozen, as are the hammerheads and wharfies all after the same kill. At times the crowds and snaking will have

you toying with thoughts of homemade surf bombs; at times you’ll see fourto-five foot side wedges rocketing and feathering down towards the pub in the distance – a mouth-watering sight.

But what exactly was it about these C-shaped gifts from the Great Ocean that had me frothing out? First, the push: I’m generally a onemove per wave type-aguy; the speed and push from a wedge beats any generated from kicking. The possibilities: with beckoning sections at your fingertips, why not have a crack at throwing out something big. The crew – surfing is always better with your mates, and for some odd reason wedge breaks attract plenty of eager punters. So were the waves of September reminiscent of the New Years the boys’ spoke of ? Not to them. They wrote it off.

“Yeah it was pretty good,” they mused, knowing I was fully psyched. “You were just the keenest out there”. Maybe I was. But I swear I watched a few five-footers bomb into the corner. Am I converting to a fan? Will I retract

Video “Try to get some up-to-date footage of yourself. Every bit counts.” Photos “Sponsors love photos. If you’re a photogenic booger they can see how they can market you.” Reputation “Having the rep of being a standout at every notable session is something that you should always try and strive for. Word of mouth is a powerful tool.”

Attitude “Super keen, but realistic. Show them that you’ve got achievable goals and your determined to get them. Be happy.” Comp results “Not my thing, but will definitely impress. Competitiveness is a good thing.”

In the modern bodyboarding game, what’s the best way to go about getting a sponsor? Not knowing much about sponsorship deals, promotion and representation, 71 sought the wisdom of recent Morey signing Jason Finlay. Age: 23. Location: Wollongong/Bawley. Local: Whalebone/Nuggan. Occupation: Bodyboarder/ PE Teacher. Sponsors: Morey Bodyboards, Zion Wetsuits, IAMNONE Clothing, Boogerking Online Store. Surfing set-up: Morey Mach 7X, Zion steamer and Churchills. Traits a professional bodyboarder needs in our day and age: All round ability – tight technical stuff, as well as big strong lines in the big salt. On top of that you need to be having fun every session. If you’re not having fun you’re doing it for the wrong reasons. What do you believe sponsors are looking to get out of their riders? Excitement, I guess. I believe they want people to be excited about their rider, and therefore excited about Go to contents.

the products that rider is using. Of course this usually comes by getting a lot of exposure. I guess primarily through shots and footage, but even just through being a standout at all the notable sessions. How’d you first go about getting on board with Morey? What did you take to them to sell Jason Finlay? Well, I was looking around for a new board sponsor, and Morey was at the top of my list. With Bunting being the only other guy on the team I knew there was an opening. I put together a really nice resume/book with my past exposure, my plans for the future and details of what I could do for their company. With this I also had an upto-date video resume that I attached. From here I sent it through to the fellas, and waited for a response.

What does riding for Morey now mean to you personally? It’s insane! Morey’s the original bodyboard! It’s got its feet well-grounded in the bodyboarding world, got an incredible rep, bullshit boards and equipment, and I’m up riding next to Bunting. Real stoked! What’s the board you’re riding at the moment, and how does it go? I’m riding the Mach-7X at the moment. I’m feeling so comfortable on it, so stoked to be so happy with my board. Also getting a few customs with the same shape, just a few different cores and stringer systems to test out. Exciting times. The Morey team in Australia’s comparatively smaller to that of the US. Do you know of any other Morey signings in the pipeline? No, none

that I know of. But I love the fact that the Aussie team is smaller! Having a small team is really personal, and mean you can really work close with each other towards the same goals. With the help of Morey where are you hoping to take your skills on the boog? World and Oz tour titles? Death-pits? World domination? For the immediate future, competitions aren’t on my agenda. I’m going to try get through to the Pipe comp as that’s the kind of waves I want to be riding. Besides that I’m super keen to try and get a lot of coverage in bigger, rather than average stuff. THRASH’D and FLUX2 (Fever Dream) are coming out in a few months, so now with Morey backing me I’m looking to travel and surf crazy amounts for them.

Anticipation is a keyword that comes to mind whilst daydreaming of Hawaii. The whole time you’re thinking, “What’s Mother Nature going to throw at us tomorrow, or even in two hours?” The ocean, the weather, and the winds can all change at the drop of a hat. But regardless of conditions, you’ve got to dedicate yourself wholly to the place. My trip to Hawaii this year was a little different to usual. Normally the focus of my travels is to ride the giants myself, but instead I made it my goal to capture the ladies riding at their best. I wanted to prove just how dedicated these female athletes really were. On the first morning of the Pipe contest I remember looking around and taking notice just how fit all the female bodyboarders were – more so than any other event I’d been too. It was obvious that these girls were ready to charge, and had been in training

for months leading up to the event. The level these girls had reached was mind-blowing, and they were competing at one of the most respected and feared breaks worldwide. Girls were getting spat of barrels, launching huge rolls out of the bowl; they even put the stand-up ladies to shame (not that they weren’t giving it a good nudge too). You could see in their confidence, their resolve, that the bodyboarders had the place wired. I was just so pumped watching these girls; I would have to say it was some of the best riding I’ve ever witnessed! The youngest competitor aged 12 from Japan, absolutely charged! Aussie Kaitlin Murphy was surfing smooth and drew powerful lines. She was certainly a stand out. Neymara was the barrel queen, and when I sat and looked through my photos I realised how many barrels the World Champ had locked into. But Luize Marie from Venezuela stole the show and surfed exceptional from the get-go, scoring a perfect 10.0 for a big barrel in the final. In typical Hawaiian style, the girls partied and drank well into the night following the crowning of the new Pipe champ. The thing I love most about Hawaii is the amazing vibe. There may be rivalries in the water, but back on dry land it’s one big happy family. And that’s what’ll keep me coming back time and time again…

As expected with the gracious conditions, competition was both tight and technical. Standout performances came from the usual suspects Thorpe Waluew, Tom Rigby, Corey McLean and Stevie Lloyd. Other note-worthy acts included Jimmy Williamson, Jordan Putland, Tim Roy and Sam Bolton. WBA event two was held on May 9th, at the beautiful Whaley Beach on Sydney’s northern beaches. We were greeted with sunshine and clean two-to-three foot swell lines rolling in. Also awaiting our arrival was a crew of more than 20 fluoro-clad girls ready to join the fun! It was awesome to see such a good mix of girls turn up for the event, including our international members Chiara Pisapia from Italy, Lucy Cioffi from Cornwall UK, plus Noriko Smith from Japan and Eveline Mussi from Brazil. Thanks to all the girls who turned up and helped out with setting up, judging, and cleaning up! The next WBA event is penned for October 31st, with “Halloween” as the theme of the day. We haven’t set a location as yet, so stay tuned to the official WBA website, which is regularly updated with the latest women’s news and photos: www.womensbodyboarding.com

Our last contest was held on a perfect, sunny day at Molly Reef, with offshore winds and one-to-two feet of swell. Though it didn’t look too inviting on first glance, we sent the Grommies out to test the water and found it to be quiet contestable. In the Grommet’s final, Dylan Fletcher held his form from his earlier heats to edge out Zac Self and Darcy Eiffert. Liam Glass and Joe Silver battled hard for first place in the Junior’s division. Joe had the upper hand in the first rounds, but it was Liam who finished first in the finals. The Open’s division was close and could’ve gone any way. Sam Cuthbert, Liam Glass and Joe Silver all fought for the top three spots; again Liam Glass took the cake. The conditions had rapidly deteriorated for the DK final, but the boys made the most of it. On a roll from his earlier heats in the grom division, Dylan Fletcher had a blinder and pulled off a maiden win. What a day Fletch had! Next contest is scheduled for the11th of October. Unfortunately this is in the middle of the school holidays, but there’s not much we can do about it. Sorry for those that can’t make it, but I’m sure when you’re away in Bali or up the coast you’ll be enjoying yourselves anyway.

Following a maiden win at the coveted Shark Island Challenge back in July, the boys from Limited Edition caught up with their newly crowned Champ, Ewan Donnachie. The following interview ensued.

Ewan, congratulations on your win! It’s a huge achievement to win with so many competitors in the event this year. What’s it like to be in Cronulla amongst the local legends and crowned the Shark Island champion? E: Cheers! Um… honestly, it’s one of those things I never thought possible. I grew up watching the Go to contents.

Island Challenge in the old Rush vids and it was, in my eyes, the epitome of elite competition. Guys going crazy, charging, boosting, getting pounded. I was honoured to be selected as an Invitee, to simply compete and continue the SIC tradition – let alone win! Ha, it seems pretty surreal!

SHARKSLANDCHALLENGE-

It’s been a goal of yours to make the main event of the Shark Island Challenge for several years. What’s it like to receive the call from Mark Fordham saying you have received an Invitee wildcard? E: Yeah, I was over the moon. I’d made the main event once before and kind of felt like things didn’t

come together for me that first time round. Then the next year, I missed out in the trials by just one spot; I was pretty cut. As a result, I was super excited to get the call; it meant I had another opportunity to have a solid crack. You’ve really been working hard in the past 12-months – surfing gnarly

71_SHARK ISLAND CHALLENGE 09. sessions at Luna Park and Shippies, which have resulted in some amazing shots and footage, and the cover of Movement magazine. As a free surfer, a cover is usually the pinnacle, but now you’re the ’09 Shark Island Champion. What rates higher? E: Whoa! You can’t ask me that haha! Um, gonna be honest, I reckon the cover was probably a touch sweeter. Ever since I left school, I worked so hard to get any magazine

My first wave was a top-to-bottom freefall on a solid eight-footer. Interesting start to the surf, but it seriously pumped me up. I caught a few more before getting a little careless and taking off on a smaller one. It hit the reef on a weird angle; warped, closed-out and twisted me in such an awkward position that I ruptured the medial ligament in my right knee, strained my back pretty hard and tweaked my neck. Caught

coverage. I spent hours on the road, emailing around, checking charts, making calls; trying to always be in the right place at the right time. For years I got absolutely nothing – not a single shot published. Then I managed to crack the drought with one double, which led to another double, then a feature interview, and so on. It felt like the wheels were in motion. To top it all off, I managed to score that cover less than 12-months after my first serious shot. Not taking anything away from the Island win, I just feel the cover had more hard work behind it. You sustained ligament damage at Luna session only a few weeks before the SIC began. Tell us about that session? What went through your mind when received the injury? E: That session was pretty amazing.

a few more, including the biggest wave I’ve ever got out there; made a couple, got pumped on a couple and then decided to head in. It wasn’t until I hit the beach and cooled down that I realised just how sore my knee was; I could barely walk for days. I was pretty stressed I would miss the SIC, so I flew home to commence physiotherapy immediately. When the opening rounds of the SIC began and you hadn’t surfed for several weeks due to your injury, did you rate your chances? E: Not really. Not only was my knee cooked, but also I was sick, unfit and lacking confidence. I figured I was lucky to be able to surf in it at all, so I just got out there with a fairly relaxed mindset; not expecting too much of myself. When the top nine riders were called

up at the presentation and you were among them, what were your thoughts at that time? E: I started getting a little nervous because all afternoon people had been saying they thought I had won. I thought they were crazy, but when Mark (Fordham) announced me as one of the top nine I started thinking, “Maybe I’m in with a chance here”. Then it came down to just you and Rissole (Christian Riguccini), a past winner of the event. What was going through your head? E: I was just thinking how devastated I’d be if I placed second. I was already in shock for placing in the top two, and just kept thinking, “Oh man, this is gonna kill me if I’m second!” Any plans for the 10 large prize purse? E: Bank it for the moment, I think. I’ll just use it for any trips that pop up in

“hey mum! yeah, i just won the 2009 shark island challenge! nah. nah, i won’t be home for dinner.” pic | nomad

the next couple years. Woo hoo! Any last comments? E: Yeah, a massive thanks to all my family and friends. Also, huge props to my sponsors Custom X, Limited Edition fins, Bodyboarders Surf Co and Peak for providing me with such amazing equipment and support! Cheers!

09ebbpro Perfect conditions greeted the finalists of the EBB Pro, which was completed in clean, sizable waves just north of the Yallingup area in WA.The Boneyards beachie hosted some of the country’s best riders, all vying for the chance to claim the title and invaluable points. A 15-minute walk from the closest car park did little to dampen the spirits of competitors who were blessed with perfect threeto-four foot waves that were fast, hollow and punchy. “The guys really lifted for the occasion, with some insane tubes and massive boosts,” said event Head Judge, Nathan Duccase. “All the guys were surfing so well that any of them could have won today. The competitors kept pushing each other to go deeper and bigger,” he said. Notable high performances from the quarterfinals included Jake Stone (QLD), Tim Fowler (WA), Phillip Windsor (WA), Jones Russell (NSW), Mitch Woodland (NSW), Cade Sharp (QLD) and Corey McLean (QLD). You can get a sick pit on the take-off then it just throws these sections up that you have to go big on,” Clarke said. The semi finals featured a starstudded line-up. The big names were penned in to battle it out with a few lesser-known WA lads. In semi one, Jake Stone continued his winning streak. He posted a 16.27, which included two eight-point plus rides, but Timmy Fowler stole the show with one of the waves of the event. Fowler was rewarded with a

Semi two featured some of the best young talent in Australia. Jones Russell was pitted against Mitch Woodland, Cade Sharp and Corey Mclean. In what could have been a final anywhere else, some of the big guns in Australian bodyboarding fought it would for the remaining two spots in the final. The lead changed consistently, but in the end Russell and McLean scooped into better

waves and advanced to the final. The thirty-minute final initiated with Jake Stone locking in a 9.07 ride; ringing alarm bells for his fellow finalists. Unfortunately, the rest of the heat was a slow one for Stone who could only manage a backup 6.50 ride. On the other hand, McLean began warming up in the latter end. Corey only caught four waves in thirty minutes, but his last two delivered a winning combination. A 7.17 placed him in a good position, but in the dying minutes a deep tube and combination of spins and rolls for an 8.67 was enough for him to finish ahead of Stoney. “I love it here in WA,” said an elated

McLean. “I probably enjoy this coastline more than any other location on tour. You have so many different options to work with. The first day we were surfing a supershallow sucky left, then today we’re surfing a tubing beachy. I’ll definitely be back next year to defend the title.” In the DK division, Trent Sanford (WA) had an emphatic win to make it backto-back titles. Long considered as WA’s best on the knee, Scarborough’s Sanford showed he hadn’t lost any of his touch, pulling some big gouges and carves off the lip. Sanford finished ahead of Mark Boehm (Doubleview, WA), Matt Fergusson (Woodlands, WA), Glenn Sullivan (Port Macquaire, NSW) and Liam O’Keefe (Trigg, WA). “Its great to actually compete in a strong DK division. It’s such an important part of the sport that I’ll look to support as best I can,” said Sanford. The IBA Rebel Sport Pro Tour turns next to Knight Beach in South Australia, before concluding in Queensland at the same time of the Australian National Titles.

“Had my round five heat today and got first. I’m stoked to have made it to the Top 16 and the money rounds. Just one more heat now and I’ll be into the man-on-man heats. That’d be quite an accomplishment. I walked the streets of Chile for the first time today. All the houses and stores are run-down, there are wild dogs wandering the streets, beggars, and drunks talking to themselves on street corners. There was some initial culture shock, but I’ve become used to it now.” ••

“Following a lunch fit for a King in the main city (at one of the 10 finest restaurants in the country), we then went to the mall and held a promo at a local surf store. I wasn’t expecting too much, but it was nuts. About 50 or more people rocked up for signatures and photos. It’s sick to see everyone’s so amped on it over here!” ••

“I’ve been hanging out with Pierre quite a bit; he’s the only other young guy on the tour. He’s been surfing insane and really consistent. It’s been good surfing with him and trying to keep up. I’m still struggling with Spanish. It’s so hard to communicate, especially with girls. I can’t understand a thing and I feel like an idiot haha.” ••

DW: “This day the waves were four-to-six feet and pretty good; about 30 guys out. Hard to get waves though. BP, Hubb, Novy, King, Pierre and Amaury were all ripping. Promise there’s no bias. Oh, Igor from the Canaries punched two huge rev airs, which were pretty impressive. The beach is semi like Mexico, though it doesn’t get the stiff offshores, so it’s never that clean.” ••

••

DW: “The thing that is really blowing me away about this contest is the amount of people that come to the competition each day. Picture this; the beach Chilca is a 50-minute drive from the major city of Lima. Then it’s a twokilometer walk up to the end of the beach, but if you have the luxury of a 4WD you can drive up. I guesstimate about 1000 people a day would come up and watch, collect autographs and take as many photos as their memory cards could hold. It was out of control the support they had for it. It was pretty amazing.” Go to contents. ••

Dave Winchester, big punt in the Chilca contest arena. ••

Who says it’s all surf and signatures for the world’s top 50? ••

DW: “Fan attack. Dear God. Peru and Chile are the only two places where the town gets so behind the contest. On average you would get 50 photos a day, most of ’em with someone who you’ve had one with days before. The funniest thing I saw was when Brad, Chad and I decided to leave the contest area via the back fence. I looked to my right and see 20 kids running at us. I jumped on my bike and peddled off. Looking back I see one kid had jumped on Chad’s back whilst riding, and dragging him down to be mobbed by 20 of them.” ••

DW: “On our last night in Chile we got talking with Jason Bitzer. He’s got a mate who’s a pro at the wave house in Santiago. Just so happens we have a 10-hour lay over and his mate can get us on for free (usually $500 US an hour). This was perfect to ease my mind of the contest. Benny P and I hit it and had a ball; doing a few tiny inverts, rolls and spins. It’s so much harder than it looks.” ••

DW: “Day eight: We were off traveling again, flight leaving at 4:40 am. Yay. Seat 1A, best ever. I’d never flown to Tacna before. It’s at the very bottom of Peru, so it was pretty interesting when we got there. Trying to find a taxi that would drive us an hour over the border was hard to find. We eventually get one for 50 US. ••

DW: “Traveling with Kingy and Ben is pretty funny, both two-times world champs; both keen to write each other off at any stage of the trip, so there’s only fun to be had.” ••

DW: “We didn’t realise the flow rider scene is so huge here. There’s a national tour and even world championships held in Singapore. Our guide, Oscar, is currently third on the national tour and was amazing on it. He hadn’t surfed it in two weeks, but first wave he pulls two big rolls and an ARS into the pit. This guy new what he was doing. The most interesting thing about Oscar was when he surfs in the ocean he prefers to go right. The flow rider is only a left, so I’d hate to see him on a right-hander.” ••
