Haruptatincim hitist eum editor’s rant rem

Another quarter, another issue! The irony of producing an issue based on motivation when my own belly flopped during the summer is surely a sign that fate has a good sense of humour? After an energetic year filled with new exercise routines (Insanity anyone?), continuing studies, changing schools (my son, not me), an increasing workload and a growing business; the rest and restoration cited in Issue 6 seemed like a nanosecond when compared to the seemingly infinite toil! Lucky for me the creation of issue 7 did the very thing for me I hope it does for you; it gave me what an old boss used to call a ‘check up from the neck up’. The ever insightful Sarupa (page 48) shares 7 tips for staying motivated and, most importantly, discusses the very reasons why you may lack motivation. Mbeke talks about the importance of forward planning (page 53) and Jay says ‘keep it real’ when it comes to your workout, success is only around the corner (page 44). I spend 72 Minutes with BBC Chef, author of Purple Citrus and Sweet Perfume, and owner of Quince (Mayfair, London) Silvena Rowe, a lady whose personality is as vibrant as the dishes she creates. I also ask, of my contacts and connections, what they would motivate the world to do, if they could. See their answers on page 9. As this issue is all about motivation there’s plenty inside to raise your hopes about what you can achieve when the impetus strikes (page 9 – page 19). We haven’t skimped on the rest either; check out Nita’s views on what’s hot right now in beauty treatments (page 42), finding fashion that fits your shoe size (page 38) or your attitude (page 40),living it up in Barcelona (page 26) or settling down in Serbia (page 35). Be inspired, be motivated or be entertained.

Enjoy

motivation

After the ‘Rest and Restoration’ prescribed in July’s issue I wanted to explore the topic of motivation. What is that thing that drives successful people to achieve? What is the feeling, the knowledge, the understanding that takes you from standing still to reaching high? I asked business connections, friends, bloggers, actors… it turns out that there’s no magic formula, not really. From motivational talks to forward planning, everyone had a personal trigger. This makes it hard to deliver a prescriptive ‘do this… and you’ll get that’ article but opens the door to the concept that if you do want to ‘do this to get that’ then you need to find out, now, what motivates you. Is it your family? Money? Fame? Recognition? Identify that thing that feels like fire burning in your soul, that thing that gnaws at you insisting “I will achieve it” and just do it. To add an extra dimension to my exploration I wanted to know what people would, if they could, motivate the world to do (p9). The result makes interesting reading.

motivation When I was growing up, I always dreamt big and one of my clear visions was always to run my own business, so I studied Business throughout my educational life and when it was time to go to University. I needed a challenge, a course which I knew nothing about as I believed would grant me the extra focus I needed to really get on with it and fulfil my challenge. So when I came across “Surveying” as a course in the prospectus, I was drawn to it and at that point when I discovered they were only 10% women in the industry, I was further empowered and thought”anything deemed Male orientated” does not mean “no go area for Women” and vice versa, “anything deemed Women orientated” does not mean “no go area for Men” so off I went and did a four year Sandwich course (3 years full time plus 1 years work placement). To this date, I have no regrets of my choice and I embrace everything that comes along with holding a Bachelor’s Degrees Science to my name. Early morning start, I pray and seek God’s guidance for the day. I always read my bible in the morning and the word for today. Before I start getting ready for the day ahead, I catch up on any incoming emails from the previous day in relation to my Swanilenga Group world, they range from, events I need to attend, fashion shows I have confirmed to do, feature interviews and an overview on all my live projects. The last 3 months have been focused on working, drafting and releasing my 50 2 Is list – profiling International and Inspirational personalities, so I have been busy ensuring all profiles have been shortlisted, put together and went the list went live on my birthday – 14th September, I have worked on promoting it, circulating the links etc and keeping tabs on feedback, which has been positively humbling. https://502is.wordpress.com/about/50-2-isinternational-inspirational-people-not-so-hidden-gems/

If I could motivate the world to do one thing… Seek God’s guidance in all things and believe positively.

Feeling de-motivated is very normal for everyone. I always make it a point not to make that feeling drag on, so I tell myself “love it / hate it, if this is not done today, it will still be there tomorrow and the next day together with all other tasks already allocated to those days and I will still be the same person to get on with it, so best do myself a favour and clear the list on whatever day” I also constantly remind myself, “Our heavenly father has blessed us all with amazing tools and talents” wasting them does not do us any favours and a day spent doing nothing is lost and cannot be re-visited to make up for that lost time.

Some of the characters I’ve played recently are a Crimean nurse, an 11th century sex slave, a yummy mummy, an Elizabeth Duke obsessed Pharmacist and a young girl who is a Social media Addict and they are all so different. So that means becoming someone completley different everytime. Researching characters and learning different accents, shooting in different locations, my hair, make up and clothing being styled differently and working with different actors. It’s never predictable and I always feel extremelylucky to have such an exciting spontaneous job. Also being around people I love is guaranteed to keep me smiling...

I am Very ambitious, extremely competitive, strong for my size and a bit manic

Eleanor Bennett I like excersise, being outside, taking care of animals, listening to music and photography. I am a photographer, but not professionally, I’m only just paying for my eqipment and covering printing costs for now. I’m taking on creative comission work from Authors and publishers I was motivated to become a photographer by the amount of first place awards I had won. I thought I should have a go. I’m even going to be judging a national contest next year. I can’t wait to find something amazing. A typical day for me can be; waking up around 5am, check email, eat, work out, research photography, eat, emailing, sleep around 11:30 / midnight. When I feel demotivated typical days are fine. I like sticking to my own routine. I like feeling I get the most out of 24 hours. I do sometimes feel like I burn the candle at both ends but I’ll deal with it untill I get something steady weekly. I feel demotivated when I don’t get what is due to me and I might have to pester a company for 12 months to get it. I do it alone on the communication side , so for a 16 year old I must be fairly strong, I am always learning. My Mum knows to leave me be and concentrate, she understands It can be hard work but she is proud of me and never smothers me. Some people think I have an agent. I’m just very very persistant. If I could motivate the world to do one thing… That if they can’t make one person happy to then avoid people. I know too many people who feel they have the freedom to make others feel miserable. You do have that freedom but you can also bring joy to those that need it. If you ever feel that you are better than someone know that there is every chance for anyone to become worn down. I like that some feel happiness upon viewing my work. A little less stress leads to a fuller life.

I am Mem Ferda quite shy, introverted, determined and sensitive

It is always very hard to have an accurate perception of one’s self, others will always see you in a different light to how you see yourself. I am very introspective, given this, in terms of my personality; I’d say I am quite shy, introverted, determined and sensitive. Those who know me describe me as an extrovert when comfortable, funny, entertaining, honourable, loyal, obsessive, honest, compulsive, intelligent, likeable, and a bit crazy! I am a professional Actor. Since childhood I have always been creative. As a child my mother would have me learn poetry to recite at family functions and I grew to like the attention I was getting. In my teens I worked as a male model, which later led to doing commercials, and then TV and Film work. I then decided I wanted to do this full time, professionally, so I attended the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) graduating with a Postgraduate Diploma in Classical acting. After LAMDA, I was snapped up by a mainstream Agent and my career really took off. Every morning at 6:30 am I go for a swim followed by some cardio work at my local health club. I then go home for a light breakfast and then into my office to check emails, follow up calls etc. Around 11:00am I call my Agent to find out what meetings have been scheduled for me for that day. If there are any, I call my driver to pick me up and we head into London. If there are no meetings, I

If I could motivate the world to do one thing… it would be for each person to have patience for peace

Work on scripts, call my business partners and work on my computer until my wife comes home for our evening meal. We often go out to our favourite restaurant or have a nice romantic meal, catch up on the latest news and weather, followed by a movie. At any moment in time if I feel demotivated, I immediately banish the thought by thinking of how fortunate I am to have the life I have, where others may not have been as lucky. I try hard not to have thoughts of selfpity, I force an inspirational mind set, which makes me get up and get on.

Like Bette Davis said, “it’s none of my business what other people think of me.” I run in the morning becasue I am training for a marathon. Then I usually have interviews and press for Henry Jaglom’s film that I am in, titled, Just 45 Minutes from Broadway. Then I have rehearsal for an upcoming play that I will be in followed by production meetings, play time with my dog, Garbo, a little indulgence in The Bachelor Pad and then bed. Since I am training for the Sacramento Marathon in December, I run with my running coach, Dr. Jason Karp, do sprints around a track or go surfing. motivation The question about motivating the world is crucial in what it reveals about the individual responding. If it were in your power to galvanise a single action from the collective you would... Think carefully on this because it reveals a great deal about your self, the way you see your world and the change you wish to bring about. What do you find in the world that leads to a desire to encourage more smiling, less self deprication, less littering? Bear in mind the boundedness of your perception of the world. No one can possibly know every corner of this planet, every act, or every person, so the ‘world’ in questions is undeniably your own. Even when we‘re dealing with seemingly enormous issues like war, or environmental sustainability, we draw attention to the very thing that strikes a chord within us, so much so that we would call on the rest of the world to follow suit. Many are familiar with Ghandi’s ‘You must be the change you want to see in the world’, an insight that suggests that change, like motivation, starts with the individual. However herein lies the realisation articulated by one of my respondents; “Everyone is entitled to their ideas, religion and ethics, respect that by not imposing your views or thoughts on them. Almost contradictory ...” The contradiction being that you cannot motivate anyone to do anything they we’re not inclined to do in the first place. The ‘i am’, in the statement by our featured contributors, is another demonstration that understanding your self is key to identifying and maintaining your motivation. The manic might flounder if forced into monotony, in the same way that the ‘fun lover’ might shy away from any experience perceived as excessively boring. This does not mean that life will spare you these experiences, nor does it mean that you sould avoid them all together, simply that understanding why you loathe them will help you deal with them whilst you move towards that thing that ignites your desire to become that ‘change you want to see in the world’ and in your self.

seventy2minutes with:  Silvena Rowe

I booked

a ‘Skype date’ with Silvena Rowe for 6pm. All my interviews have been this way, so far. Time is of the essence and I am the quintessential 72M woman, as is Silvena. She’s speaking to me from Quince, her May Fair Hotel based restaurant and I’m in my office surrounded by 4 years’ worth of study material, 2 inquisitive children and a list of burning questions.

The restaurant is busy so she’s been there all day but I don’t sense any fatigue just a ‘matter-of-fact’ this is what I do. She even thanks me for finding the time to speak with her! Silvena is a chef, if you hadn’t guessed. She’s also an author, a television personality, a restaurateur, a mother, a wife… Initially we touch on ‘Time Machine Chefs’, a cooking programme with a time travel twist where the Chefs in question are tasked with preparing meals from a set period using tools and techniques relevant to that period. Silvena is one of three judges and she explains the mechanics behind getting her to America, the scale of the project, the execution and the budget. We both agree that American’s like to do things big and she’s ‘chuffed’ at the opportunity that this gives her to gain a little bit more exposure stateside. Silvena is no stranger to television. She’s had regular slots on Saturday Kitchen (a UK based cookery program) and she was the food consultant on David Cronenberg’s Eastern Promises. We slip into a conversation about the rise of the Celebrity Chef; a phenomenon she states is unexpected, very ‘British’ and ‘American’ in its concept. The glamorisation of the profession, she believes, has led to a surge in today’s youth taking an active interest and she describes a situation where a classroom of children are asked that ubiquitous questions; “what do you want to be when you grow up?” Amongst the usual Teachers, Doctors and Firemen were now Chefs. Admittedly I can’t recall any of my classmates wanting to be Chefs but my son, 11, is an enthusiastic cook and insists on preparing something in the kitchen at least once a week. Silvena is often described as the ‘leading authority’ in the field of Eastern Mediterranean food, in the UK, and I’m curious as to how she shoulders such an accolade. Her response is refreshingly honest. There’s no need for her to be humble. She’s worked hard, learned her craft, her research has been thorough! Claudia Roden, she accepts, will always be regarded as the Queen of Eastern Mediterranean food but she, Silvena, brings a contemporary flavour (so to speak) and a modernity that reawakens our understanding, and our engagement, with Eastern Mediterranean food. I have to say I love her ‘matter-of-fact’ attitude. Her affirmations roll of her tongue wrapped in that awesome Slavic drawl and land in my ears like a command! I’m not about to challenge her, I‘ve done my homework and read up on her credentials, but she reminds me that she’s twice awarded (Glenfiddich Food and Drink Award, Gourmand Award ), a confirmation of a wider acceptance of her craft.

seventy2minutes with:  Silvena Rowe I want to know if she feels that it’s necessary for a Chef to love food. I’ve seen her on Saturday Kitchen and her relationship with food is intimate. The way she describes textures, ingredients and smells tells me that she’s a foodie. She agrees wholeheartedly that she’s a food lover, and then some. She also states that she’s a little bit greedy too! She says “food excites me” and you can really hear it in her voice. There’s no denying that her relationship with food is strong and I can’t help but link that relationship back to her father, a Turk and newspaper editor who instilled in her a love of cooking. After her father died Silvena travelled through Turkey, Syria, Lebanon and Jordan in a quest to rediscover her roots. Her travels resulted in “Purple Citrus & Sweet Perfume: Cuisine of the Eastern Mediterranean”, her bestselling book that has been described by readers as “A fresh approach” and “Exquisite”. She laments the inaccessibility of Syria due to current conflicts but enthuses about the rustic authenticity of these countries. As advanced as they have become, in parts, her journey exposed her to cultures she describes, warmly, as ‘phenomenal’ where so much remains unchanged. I tell her that we’re gifting two copies of “Purple Citrus and Sweet Perfume:” to two of our readers and ask her opinion as to how they should approach her recipes. In her words, she advises; “Enjoy it. It is a special book that I wanted to have lots of stories, so take the book to bed at night and enjoy the stories, then in the day take it into the kitchen then cook from it” These stories she speaks of are the hidden secrets that are forgotten in our age of information. During her travels she found that the incoming of the internet, mobile phones and modern technology had obscured the stories that were previously handed down between generations, stories that highlighted the basic elements of life. issues theme of ‘motivation’ is one I’m sharing with everyone I speak to. Motivation to act is so important and I wonder what she would do if she could motivate the world to do one thing, and one thing alone.

Her answer is telling of the environment she finds herself in in and reflective of most of the responses I’ve had to this question. She lives in London and as Londoners know the pace is fast, people can be aggressive and often thoughtless. She would motivate people to just be a little nicer, to stop, think, and smile more. She even admits to being rude and abrupt herself when stressed. Aren’t we all? Isn’t that what life does to us? I know she’s a busy woman. 72M is all about busyness and balance so I want to know what she does when demotivation kicks in. She says she has a lot of energy and is fortunate to do something that she loves, something she feels she is meant to do. Once more, in reflection of her openness she testifies to having chosen this profession because so many others allow their work to choose them, falling into roles that they don’t really like but are bound to spend hours of their day doing. Having found something she loves what she does no longer feels like work. This is very fortunate because being a Chef, even in your own restaurant, is no easy task. I ask her about Quince, described as “Soulful, sensual and spirited”, situated in The Mayfair Hotel, London. With its prestigious settings, in one of the most expensive cities in the world, it gives the impression of ‘fine dining exclusivity’. Silvena highlights that her menu is like she is. What you see is what you get, in no uncertain terms. She’s very down to earth (I agree) and “says it as it is” (oh yes). She describes herself as normal, outspoken, rough at the edges with a lot of energy. 24

The intention is that her menu is the same. It can be very ‘fine dining’ but it’s purposefully rough at the edges, encouraging visitors to share, have fun and indulge in the textures and flavours that mirror her passion for food. We have a quick conversation about orange Baklava. Having grown up in North London with many Turkish friends Baklava and Dolma are tasty treats that I have indulged in (once my adopted Turkish mums adapted them for my vegetarian tongue). She describes the process of cooking Baklava with whole oranges then tells me that she’s actually eating one as we speak! My mouth waters in envy, but it is her signature dish at Quince, and I’ve already made a mental note to pay her restaurant a visit. Finally

I ask her about her seventy2minutes.

She has, in her words, an amazing relationship with life. She loves every minute of it. Her Seventy2Minutes are made up of the moments that she loves, when she’s making the most amazing food, everyone is enjoying it, and the compliments are pouring in. This humbles her, a rare thing, and therapeutically cleanses her. She stresses that there are personal moments; children, families, special occasions, but these are a given. The food that she cooks and the people enjoying it in their special moments (think birthdays, anniversaries, and engagements) are, ultimately, the best. There’s one more question I have to ask. Her love for food is so glaringly obvious that I want to know if there is one person she wishes to cook for, one individual to share her passion for food with; “My father” She says. “He was always very cautious with his compliments but they were there for me. He would be so proud.” And I don’t doubt it.

Barcelona

SPECIAL

B

arcelona is a dense sprawling city, with very significant areas each with their own flavour and attraction. It seems a cliche to say there’s something for everyone, but there really is, and so my first and, in my mind, essential tip is to begin your day at Santa Caterina Market, where under its theatrical coloured roof, you will find an array of food stalls to satisfy any breakfast craving. From here, you are in a perfect position to head north-west up a small alleyway, to the Go Car depot, for the most unique and personal day’s transportation. The two-seat open-topped yellow vehicle is a talking GPS tour car, so you drive at your own pace, guided by a navigation system that also informs you about the sights and imparts local knowledge, such as where to get great tapas. If you see something you like, park up (it fits in a motorcycle bay) and hop out and enjoy. A visit to Barcelona has to include some Gaudi, and the inspired architect has presence all over the city, so swing by the Sagada Familia, the famously unfinished cathedral, and the serene (aside from all the tourists) Park Guell which can be like walking around a Dali painting. Make a stop for Tapas whenever you feel hungry - the beauty of Barcelona is that you can get quick, cheap, quality eats wherever you are, and tapas stops are the perfect accompaniment to a busy afternoon shopping, throughout the many boutiques and major stores you will pass.

www.andilanahotels.com/es

Of course, the exhausting day so far will probably require a siesta (when in Rome right?) and late afternoon on the beach is the perfect time. You’re going to need the rest, because your evening, if playing like a true Catalan will start late, and end much later. If city beaches are not your thing, head west along the coast to Sitges, a quieter beachside town with an array of chilled cafes, bars, traditional shopping and quaint marina. Food with friends is the focus of a spectacular Spanish evening, so you can find a restaurant with some outdoor buzz along the popular but touristy Las Ramblas, or dine with a local’s discretion at the elegant Patagonia BW. Here, you will be treated to delectable Argentinian beef and Spanish wines in a modern setting, and certain regulars are honored with their own personally engraved steak knife presented to them by the owner. Everything I sampled here was superb, but the standout piece if you like rich taste is the Medallon Rossini, a tenderloin fillet topped with duck foie and Malbec sauce.

seventy2minutes.com  Winter 2012

With the aftertaste of quality red firmly on your palate, head over to the Gothic Quarter and simply wander around the narrow streets lined with magical architecture. These avenues play host to many cavernous and intricate tapas and wine dens, where the setting ranges from romantic to artsy, and is full of conversation, fun and friendly encounter. When you’re ready to drop, which should be when the sun is coming up, Barcelona has a wonderful array of hotel accommodation, from the traditional to the modern and boutique, such as the big name W on the beach that has rave reviews, to the intimate, classy and very personally designed Market Hotel, where both the elegance and rustic elements of the surrounding city’s architecture permeates your walls and into your dreams.

B brit on the Haruptatincim hitist eum rem boulevard

rit on the oulevard Monthly musings & shenanigans from a Brit in LA

Aaaah, 4th of July. Independence Day. The day that Americans celebrate their independence from the Brits (or the day Will Smith “whooped ET’s ass”, whichever you prefer). So in true British ironic homage, a group of us (including several Grange Hill alumni and a few token yanks) claimed a rather fine territory on Manhattan Beach, just south of LA, to enjoy the start of summer in classic SoCal fashion. If you like burgers, beach, bikinis, bodies in bikinis, or the letter B in general, it’s a great spot to bugger off to.

Talking of buggering off, the following weekend welcomed the inaugural Pop Con LA - a pop culture festival of film, fashion, music and generally much cult horror and sci-fi goodness (including the Back To The Future DeLorean) at the LA Convention centre, whose STTV Awards ceremony graciously nominated my web-comedy, Andy & Chaz Bugger Off To America, as Best Comedy, and yours truly as Best Comedy Actor, and was hosted by none other than Corey Feldman. We also launched our new project The Adventures of Dude & Bro at the ITV Fest there, and many weblebrities and new-media stars turned out in force, rocked the red carpet (as I did in my best threads from Turkish brand Tween) and after-partied on the rooftop of Icon to the sounds of top female DJ Shy. I wound down that week with a relaxing and beautiful evening at one of my favorite places in LA, and one of the most beautiful concert venues in the world, the Hollywood Bowl. Enjoying well-crafted cocktails and a fresh gourmet picnic basket from the Patina Restaurant Group there under the stars, we were entertained by a Ray Charles tribute, with Babyface, Martina McBride, BeBe Winans and the Count Basie Orchestra lending their talent to the great man’s tunes. This venue really is worth a visit, with many legendary artists performing soon including Bob Dylan, Florence & The Machine and Jason Mraz, and fireworks if you get the right night. It was a good job some

relaxing went on, in prep for the geektastic crazython onslaught called ComicCon that was about to hit me.... One of my favorite festivals in the world, ComicCon began as a cult convention for comic book lovers, but now includes anything slightly fantastical in the world of film, TV and

comics, with an insane amount of huge stars showing up to publicise their various new releases, take part in panels and events, and give breaking news on projects, all squished up with thousands of dedicated costumed fans roaming the streets of San Diego. The randomness of superfan rubbing strange shoulder with superstar makes for an extremely fun and upbeat time, with every nook, cranny and venue of the downtown area dressing up and immersing in the theme. The first night we party-hopped from the Wired Cafe to the zombie-laden Fearnet party at Voyeur, passing through the AMP lounge and a surreal and philosophical conversation with the Double Rainbow YouTube guy, ending up at the Maxim/FX party, amidst the superhard cast of Sons Of Anarchy, supersmall Elijah Wood and superhot Maxim host Aja Dang and Katrina Law from Spartacus.

I rolled over to the next day for a more chilled lunch at the Coronado hotel with my good friend Lauren Cohan (Maggie Greene in one of my favourite shows The Walking Dead) and some of its other stars, and the producer of Breaking Bad, arguably the best television show in history of histories, which received its Season 5 premiere right there at ComicCon, and is bound to collect Emmys soon like Walter White collects dead bodies. From there we hit the Writers Guild party (with a thud, you could’ve heard a pen drop) and then the Machinima party (which hit us back hard - then picked us up with more liquor) ending up at the multi-zoned and glamor-themed True Blood / Playboy party, where the ‘coolest-dude-of-the-night-award’ had to go to a very hairy William H Macy in a very fetching striped suit. I was barely able to get a few days of LA recovery in, before heading southbound yet again for Opening Day at the Del Mar Racetrack, a hat-filled classy affair somewhat like ladies day at Ascot minus rain and royalty. The poker-hot venue of choice for my midweek dinner was Laurel Hardware, a new bar-restaurant converted from a longstanding hardware store. With the street fascia unchanged, and decor lending itself to tools of the trade, dripping with the tools of the other trade (namely top Hollywood agents) this looks like it may become a temporary classic, just like the starlets sipping their Aqua Di Vida whilst the Creeping Fig spouts his latest success, but that aside, it’s a beautiful and fun lively spot to start or end an eve. The following night welcomed renowned UK bridal headwear designer Hermione Harbutt, exclusively champagne-launching her Red Carpet range amongst stars and journalists at the West Hollywood Palihouse to roaring approval. The end of July felt a little strange as some brit-friends and I traipsed around Hollywood looking for somewhere that was showing Danny Boyle’s epic Olympics opening ceremony.

Our friends at Irish hangout Rock & Reilly kindly catered (and endured our anthem-chorus) and it was a proud moment, but also one where we missed being in the homeland. The Games dominated the box for the next few weeks, whilst on the big screen I thoroughly enjoyed a screening of The Big Lebowski at Cinespia: outdoor screenings amidst the famous graves of the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. August heated up considerably, so ocean fun dominated the agenda, but I also enjoyed dinner at the classic Sunset Tower Hotel, followed by MacAfrica & Jeff Gund’s jazz night starring Jeff Goldblum and Fishbone’s Angelo Moore. We dressed as Rockers and Ravers for actress Ali Costello’s themed birthday, and hid amongst multiple Freddy Kruegers at Mad Monster’s anniversary screening of Nightmare on Elm Street: Dream Warriors at the famous Chinese Theater. From one Krueger to another, I spent the next week very unglamorously in a derelict warehouse, filming my role of homeless warrior Ajax in new web-series and movie The Darkness Descending, penned by and starring Frank Krueger. I attended new art project Intersecting LA, the premiere of Vietnamese star Kathy Uyen’s $uperCapitalist movie, and celebrity publicist Jane Owen’s birthday, and I bookended the LA summer by a relaxing and very American Labor Day, doing very little labor. A few days later however, I was back to my normal British self, after-partying sporting a bright pink “Pussay Patrol” t-shirt, sipping a Newcy Brown in the Kings Head, amongst the comical cast of The Inbetweeners Movie, which just opened Stateside, and quite frankly left me gagging... for another holiday!

the alex experience

Editorially briefed to offer, in this edition of The Alex Experience, a piece concerning motivation, the writer was struck by the microcosmic and for some time was lost for what to write. mm… from what angle to approach such a massive idea as what prompts.

Do we need to begin at the beginning and consider what motivates us to life itself? This might encompass ideas about primeval drives to reproduction, continuance of a species and the balance of earthly nature. Such an avenue of thought presents immediately a huge and dazzling gateway leading from it expediently marked ‘Why are we here?’ but which can’t possibly be traversed in 800 words.

Shall we look at the infinitesimal moment by moment choices that we are all constantly making? Can that even be fathomed? And surely these aren’t as important as the ‘big’ decisions, right? We’ll come back to that in a moment. Beyond some of our most basic drives like quelling hunger, needing warmth or sexual expression that might come under the banner of survival, the 21st century world we find ourselves in is rife with suggestions of ways to Just do it™. So if we are strong in family this would be important and, for some, the genesis of duty that is often exercised further in the rank and file or the 9 to 5. We need not get whimsical on adolescent thoughts of fame for the overwhelming media obsession with the microscopic analysis of the neuroses of others overflows with this already. A golden gongs moment then to ponder the Olympic medallists, the Oscar winners, Nobel Laureates, Pulitzer prize possessors and those honoured for Empiric endeavours? Or is it true that where there is a title there is always a fiction? From the decorated though, might be sewn the seed to a bedroom poster, the imitation sung into a hairbrush, the smashing of records, the re-writing of history or the birth of a new generation of heroes. Must we make demonstration of our being devout to our guiding forces, to those esteemed in our faith that we do a greater work in honour of our ascended forebears? And what if we don’t make observance of this or insult, with or without intention, the pride that others

hold for their doctrines, are we to be condemned to act, or otherwise, through fear of retribution?

Whatever the goal we should all at least want to be autonomous in our decision making, whether we are aiming to hit the back of the net, get a promotion, maintain or improve our health, learn a new skill or simply enjoy the freedom of our unalienable human rights, right? Of course we are all too well aware that there is an ongoing game for the pursuit of the tweedle dum & tweedle dee of prizes for some. By way of the mere mechanism that is money, to gain the ultimate in power they cast a matrix of control to ensure that whatever dark forces motivate them continue to be fed. Which brings us back to the ‘big decisions’. For these must be the ones taken by our worthy ‘leaders’, that go by names such as law, act or treaty brought about by debates, pledges and promises. The ones purported to be motivated to the ‘needs of everyone’. But look closer and you will see secreted in the last paragraph a word that is also used to describe a segment of a play, a fantasy; a story. Another …fiction. If you are a person spurred on by what appears to be a novelty idea; truth, then you might discern that these ‘rulers’ are in fact helpless without our wilful ignorance, apathy and above all our consent, and that far from by mere patience or accident; they achieve them …by design. Hold on a minute, you say, we’re not being distracted or deceived. We don’t ever respond to advertising, hypnosis is bunk, subliminal messages and symbolism is a myth and I’ve never seen a movie or read a story about any rags to riches Princess. So, perhaps now, I come to some of my motivation. To suggest only that these external influences are drowning out your voice of love inside. The voice that speaks to you constantly guiding you to your peace, yet is so quiet that you may be unfortunate enough to go a life time being ‘entertained’ and never really hear it. This bliss within, as unique as each of us, is a place that once found, inside us all, will realise the promise that we all know our world is meant to be.

Mind your own

business

What’s your motivation? Starting your own business and being your own boss might sound amazing but what’s your motivation and, most importantly, is it sustainable? Working within the confines of a predetermined structure might seem suffocating to you but can you make it on your own? Really? Whilst we admire the impetus of go-getting high achievers make sure that this path is right for you and then pursue your dreams with the ferocity, and the determination, of an entrepreneur. Ask yourself how many of the factors below reflect your motivations and how many of them will help you sustain a profitable business.

Push factors

Pull factors

> My 9-5 doesn’t give me any job satisfaction

> I want to be my own boss

> There’s no scope for development where I work

> I have a fantastic idea that would make a great business

> I find the hierarchical structures, where I work, suffocating

> I’m self motivated, driven and innovative

> I’m constantly dreaming of something better

> I want something that fits around my family

> I hate my manager!

> I think I can make more money running my own business

> I feel I can do better > I don’t like being told what to do Ultimately, your motivations (whether pushing, or pulling, you towards an entrepreneurial direction,) should endure or your business will falter. Make sure you know the difference between ‘job dissatisfaction’, ‘person/organisation mismatch’ and the desire, tenacity and focus to make it on your own!

Lense by Andy Holmes

What’s my motivation?

T

he popular cry amongst the acting profession, often once a thespian has been placed into a scene and is wondering just how to play it.

But of course, “All the world’s a stage and all the men and women merely players: They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts.”

Thanks for that Will, and it leads us back to my original question, for if we all play many parts in life, what are our motivations? As someone who has spent most of his working life around the media, a large amount of that motivation must come from within. Recently I hired an apprentice to work with me and a number of the applicants had the skills on paper, but little evidence that they would be prepared to go the extra mile. The person I’ve hired showed proof of that in interview and a month in, has already shown an aptitude to working outside of office hours to get the job done. Media jobs at the lower end of the scale can get away with offering really bad salaries because of the high demand for them. If candidate one turns down fifteen grand a year, candidate two will lap it up, knowing that a foot in the door is better than trying to kick it down from the outside. It’s a survival of the fittest profession attracting those prepared to be single minded and self motivated, you can’t exist and most importantly you won’t stand out without those skills. I’m slightly worried therefore, that if I attempt to return to the centre of the media world from the peripheral, something I’m considering, that I may not be as successful as I’m older and wiser than when I first attempted it. On a positive that means I’m more switched on to the realities of how hard a profession it is. When I got into radio I would’ve worked for nothing, would’ve travelled from one end of the country to the other for work. Now I’ve got a comfortable salary and a comfortable life, will I be as keen to jump through the hoops to stand out?

I’m sure when I get married and have children, what motivates me will alter again, suddenly it won’t be all about me. Instead I will have the motivations to provide for my family, to make sure they don’t miss out, even if that means sacrificing some of those dreams that I may have. What else motivates us? Often the sense of wanting to prove others wrong. I used to play football for a team where our captain was also my boss. He was one of the better footballers I’ve played with, but also had a Roy Keane-esque approach to winding me up, riling me (in the nicest possible way) so that I would perform with my sporting juices in full flow. On the flip side, when I play with people who don’t have that approach, I can get bored and lose concentration easily. Then there’s the relationship break up motivation, one I experienced a few months ago. It’s perhaps not a question of proving yourself to your ex, but more a case of wanting to motivate yourself to improve other parts of your life so that you dwell less on what you may have lost. That can of course be counter productive as you end up using up all of your internal motivation up and become burnt out, without the motivation of a partner to back yourself up. At that point, we often really need good friends not only to motivate us, as they often see our best qualities, but also to remind ourselves that it’s okay to be unmotivated from time to time, to take a moment to take stock and be proud of the journey that the motivation has taken us on so far. At that point, you really need to recharge your batteries and take a break, something I’m aiming to do in September. So whatever parts you are currently playing, be sure to know what your motivation is. Good luck in those roles and I will look forward to speaking to you all again soon from Behind the Lense. health, wealth & wisdom I could be bounded in a nutshell, and count myself a king of infinite space

space

...so said Shakespeare’s Hamlet, and so could you, with a few simple tips that shed light on how to make the best of the space you live in.

colour

materials

Light and cool. Don’t fall for the cream trap either. Go stark, white and clinical (far more interesting) or get some colour on those walls. Pistachio, rose, powder blue, chalk (ok... so this is just a ‘posh’ version of cream). Use the same colour on all walls if the room is very, very small and avoid coving.

Be adventurous. As there is less to cover experiment with leather on the walls (bedroom, office) or whitewashed pebbles on the floors (bathroom, ensuite) . If you prefer wood keep it light with plain ash, cedar of Lebanon or Burr Maple. If you crave a little colour avoid the temptaion to paint or paper a ‘feature’ wall and simply accesorise with cushions, towels or plants...

furnish Less is more. Smaller furniture won’t make much of a difference but less clutter will. If your room is a living space 1 large sofa is better than a small 3 piece suite. If you’re room is a bedroom think about hidden storage, floating shelves, blinds instead of full length curtains. The more floor and wall you see the more space your mind believes there is.

34

seventy2minutes.com  Winter 2012

move something A door, a wall... sometimes the only way to achieve that space is to move a poorly placed wall, or remove a door so the energy flows from one room to the other. Use the same colour on the walls of adjoining rooms, and the same flooring, to create that flow, and maintain the illusion of space.

Belgr ade Serbia! the weather is distinctive – low forties in the summer and as low as minus twenty‑five in winter.

An Englishman in Serbia If, a few years ago, anyone would have told me the day would come when I would uproot and move to Belgrade to live I would probably have laughed in their face. Well, 14 months ago that day arrived and here I am. Why? I got married, to a Belgradian, and it seemed considerably easier for me to move here than for her to move to England. How? I gave up a performance management job working for the local authority and swapped it for a new career teaching English as a second language. I can already hear the mutterings of “those who can, do and those who can’t, teach” It’s really not like that at all! Suffice to say it offers variety, job satisfaction and a relatively easy entry into the job market here.

What have I discovered here? The people, by and large are very friendly. The food and drink, on the whole, is exceptional and the weather is distinctive – low forties in the summer and as low as minus twenty five in winter. And lots of snow! People here are very proud to be Serbian, I like that and I can relate to that as I am very proud to be English. Given the relatively recent political events (more of that in future articles) people are, surprisingly, very open and welcoming towards me as an Englishman. I genuinely love living here. My next challenge is to learn the language…..wish me luck

O

ver the last 6 or so months, I’ve been working with a young artist out of Seoul, by the name of Minjae Lee. He’s a very talented young artist, who’s seemed to produce very few pieces of work each year (3-6) and his focus on the eyes and the use of highly intricate patterns, make his pieces both interesting and thought provoking. Like many artists, Minjae likes to keep to himself, stay out of the spot light and just get on and do his work. Even to the point he was invited to speak at a TED event and turned it down. There is no doubt he’s an artist to watch, who’s art works have increased ten fold in the year, but more than that he brings a new element to the art world, where his use of color and capturing emotion is according to some “captivating” and to others “....simply beautiful”. Being a self taught artist Minjae really took a big chance, pursuing his dream of becoming a full time artist, to do what he loves and make a career out of it. His story is not only inspiring for other artists, but his works give inspiration and that is something very much missed in many art works today. In this article I have decided to simply show his works, rather than just talk about it. www.grenomj.com www.facebook.com/grenomj

I

have worked in the shoe and fashion industry for 30 years including fabulous brands such as Red of Dead, Ted Baker, Shellys and Jaeger but last year I got a bee in my bonnet. I researched the web extensively and simply couldn’t find the sort of shoe styles my daughter would buy in Office and Top Shop made to a good quality for anyone over a size 8. There are some well-established specialists and recently sites have mushroomed for women with shoe sizes 8-12 because recognition is growing that this part of the market is not served well and the high street has been slow to catch up. However, I can’t find shoes that follow the catwalk trends, appealing to a young, fashion-conscious girl who just wants the same sort of shoes that her friends can find with ease. There is lots of evidence to show that younger and younger girls are emerging with larger feet – the fact that the shoes will appeal to women of any age with a keen sense of fashion, is a bonus. Our Missima brand has a dedicated professional footwear designer and we build and create the collection with exactly the same principles as the other brands I have worked for.

Challenges Launching a sandal range in the wettest summer on record! Another challenge is finding factories that will make something special in small quantities, delivering on time and to a price we can afford. Missima is not a cheap brand as we are building in a lot of design and quality but still, prices should not be excessive.

Opportunities We have received a surprising number of enquiries from other specialist sites and shops wanting to stock the brand. This is a wonderful endorsement that the collection can offer these retailers something different. I had always planned to wholesale but given the level of interest, we are fasttracking this plan to Spring 2013.

Lessons learned We should have planned an autumn 2012 collection! The original strategy for Missima to be a summer collection only but we missed an opportunity. The overwhelming message from our customers has been that we should have created a winter range with the same level of fashionability as summer 2012. We will definitely be planning a collection for autumn 2013 but in the meantime, we are well on the way to developing spring 2013.

Style Beyond by Katherine Pegka

Size

If, according to statistics, women take, on average, 72 minutes to get ready for a big night out, then 71 out of the 72 are pretty much dominated by the question “does this make me look fat?”. The last minute is being spent on a frenzied search for the car keys. I am not gonna give you any styling tips here on how to look slimmer, leaner, or good naked. I am also not gonna tell you that it’s ok to be obese, because, well, it’s not. What I am gonna tell you is this: appreciate and cherish the body you are given. Nourish and pamper it. Take good care of it. Listen to it. Love it. Don’t distress by comparing yourself to over-styled size 0 models and celebrities. Find your style, for your body. Go beyond numbers and sizes. I have three different sizes in my closet (no size 0 or even 2, mind you), so what? Style is not about that. Style comes naturally, you either have it or you don’t. Style is about the perfect fit, not the perfect body. It is the perfection of a point of view. Yours.

or years the beauty industry has been known for making people look and feel great, but most of the treatments until recently have only given short term superficial results. Nowadays, we are in a results driven world, where we are heavily influenced by the media to always look good, and so the beauty industry has evolved to meet the fast growing demands and needs of clients, but what are those needs? People want to look younger for longer, and they’re willing to pay for the privilege. Botox and fillers are becoming ever more popular and far too many are using these methods as a quick fix but whilst they may work for weeks or months they aren’t addressing, delaying or preventing the real problems, which is the ageing of the skin. So why rush into having Botox and fillers when you can delay the need for these for years by keeping the skin young?!

© Pictures istockphoto.com

UVA rays and free radicals are one of the main causes for premature ageing as they attack the skin all year round. UVA is present all year round and even comes from artificial lighting and your computer screens and can penetrate through clothes and also buildings. It is important to protect your skin daily, whether you are leaving the house or not as this is the most damaging ray penetrating deepest into the skin. At the same time, free radicals attack your skin depleting its nutrients. Scarily this same damage can mutate into skin cancer. It is easy to protect your skin by using a reflective, anti-oxidant sunscreen. I highly recommend RAD SPF15 by Environ. This sunscreen has UVA and UVB filters as well high anti-oxidant content to disarm and protect against free radical attack. The ageing process begins once we hit around 25 years old. The body then starts to continuously deplete its vitamins. So the skin begins to slowly shrivel from a lovely, smooth and firm grape-like condition to eventually, in later years looking like a dry prune!

HeavenSentBeauty People who have poor diets, lack of sleep, stress, smoke, drink excess alcohol or take drugs will deplete far more vitamins from their bodies than a person who has a good diet and lifestyle, and will therefore age much faster. So what if we could replenish the vitamins that we lose from the skin on a daily basis, what would we achieve?! Good News! We would achieve a massive anti-ageing effect to the skin! Supplementing your diet with a good quality vitamin will feed the skin from the inside. Check out the “Advanced Nutrition Programme”, for good quality, skin specific supplements.

BEAUTY

After years of research on the skin on how to prevent premature ageing and skin cancer Environ has combined active vitamin A, C & E in their products to effectively normalise, strengthen and protect the skin whilst boosting the production of elastin and collagen, therefore plumping the skin and improving the look of fine lines and wrinkles. As our skin is made up of vitamins, it is easily able to recognise these active vitamin ingredients, allowing them to penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin. The Environ cosmaceutical skincare range is one of the leading anti-ageing skincare products in the beauty industry. It fortifies and heals the skin topically, with its unique step up programme. A nourished and satisfied skin will not produce too much oil, look congested or spotty; it will also not look dry, dehydrated, flaky or lined and wrinkled. It will look young, soft and velvety. This is what a daily skincare regime with Environ has done for my clients over the recent years, and it will do it for you-Guaranteed!

T

he key to beginning and maintaining a workout plan is your motivation. You need to really understand the why’s and what for’s when you begin every workout. Without the understanding of your true motivations whether they be to lose weight, to get fit or achieve a sporting goal you will not seriously be able to focus on the task at hand. Everyone gets their fuel for motivation differently, don’t compare yourself to anyone else unless you know for sure they are very similar to you. Books, music and a great film can install the motivation we need inside of us, so make sure you have those 3 tools at hand anytime you want or need.

I remember reading a motivational piece when I was a teenager and to this day it still motivates me... It goes, success is failure turned inside out, the silver tints of the clouds of doubt, you never know how close you are, it maybe nearer when it seems so a far, so stick to the fight when your hardest hit, its when things are at their worst you must not quit!

So to finish off, ask yourself what it is your looking to achieve, how much you’re willing to pay (in terms of adherence), and then use every motivational tool that works for you to keep you on the right path to exercise success. Be true to yourself and keep it real.x

Find a motivational speaker that is in tune with your way of thinking. Try searching youtube and then you will have a wealth of free videos to help boost and inspire you.

Keep it really simple

RSS

(an acronym for Real Simple Syndication), is not as scary as it sounds, yet many people are not taking advantage of this amazing technology. RSS feed readers, sometimes referred to as news feeds, feeders, or feed burners, are one of the easiest and most efficient ways to obtain news, blog posts and more through the internet. Prior to using an RSS feed reader, I remember suffering from information overload while surfing the internet. With the influx of websites and articles I found interesting, I never had the time to absorb them all in one sitting. When I did have time, I usually forgot about them. Then came my RSS feed reader! Now, when I see an article or website I am interested in reading, I simply subscribe to the feed or add the web address to my feed reader. Now, all the latest information from each site gets delivered to my feed reader electronically. Through my feed reader, I can save what I want to read later, dispose of what I don’t, and more! Many RSS feed readers are not only free, they easy to sign up for. Having an email subscription through MSN, Gmail, Yahoo and many other sites, give you the option to obtain a reader for free. App stores also offer a variety of feed readers for most technological devices. Rather than miss out on the latest news and more because life simply, “got in the way,” take a moment and subscribe to a feed reader today.

Mon£y Matter$ Rain, sunshine, freezing temperatures don’t make much difference as there is always a battle for motivation. Uplifted or feeling brow beaten motivating yourself to stay on track or on purpose is quite often the difference between success and struggle. Although I have to say there is something quite revealing in the lack of motivation patterns people have. How can you be motivated when you are doing something that you don’t want to do? It’s not impossible, I accept that. If lack of motivation keeps kicking in it might be trying to tell you something, now there’s a thought to ponder on! If on the other hand you aren’t motivated to do the things that you may have on your ‘to-do list’ or dream list then you are probably being distracted. It might not be that you are sat around doing nothing; quite often the cause of the lack of motivation is so bona fide it becomes plausible and unchallengeable. To help you figure out how to beat that lack of motivation so you can get on with the things you are passionate about I am going to share my categories for a lack of motivation.

Sarupa Shah The Soul Agent www.sarupashah.com www.facebook.com/ SarupaShahTheSoulAgent

The different dresses of lack of motivation

Distracted

Bona fide

The distraction is mostly fear based. The fashionable term and the marketers dream being, you are playing small. I am getting a pet hate for that as no-one plays small or big, you are simply being you in any given moment, but I use it here for ease of explanation. Distraction is classic, the TV is more interesting then working on your business…the washing up more enticing then writing your book. You know you are doing it but it is as if it is a force outside of you that you can’t stop being drawn into! Distraction is not just a physical thing however as overwhelm and stress are distractions too!

This type of motivation challenge is when there is something genuine and plausible going on. You could be ill, serious or not, be involved in one of life’s many dramas, or supporting others through their own drama. Plausible, unchallengeable and justified but you don’t need me to tell you that this is still a choice, albeit it often made unconsciously!

Laziness Sometimes lack of motivation is pure and simple laziness. Sometimes you just can’t be bothered…and trying to pretend it is something else is like finding someone else’s can of worms and claiming them as your own! Better to call it what it is, it’s simpler than pretending it is something else!

The sacrifice Other times as I have said there is a lack of motivation because your heart and soul is not in what you are doing. Maybe you are one of those people who just can’t say no to others calls for help but then the motivation issue kicks in, the excuses why you can’t help them move, or babysit again but you end up doing it and it usurps your time and motivation for you.

seventy2minutes.com  Winter 2012

You probably recognise you in each category because they are all really different shades of lack of motivation; the outcome in all cases is the same. Something you have committed to or are passionate about you have lost your motivation mojo for. However knowing what is causing the motivation deficit in your life means you can respond accordingly. There was some kind of promise about this year. 2012 the year that the world was supposed to change or was it end…? Not sure if the earth has moved for you yet or if it feels like things are declining, going south so to speak and in some way it doesn’t matter because you will benefit in raising your motivation bar. Motivation matters as it is the fuel to your power and without it well life is a bit damp squib and not exciting. Here are my tips for getting really motivated, energised and juiced up so life can feel exciting whatever it is you do.

health, wealth & wisdom

Your 7 tips for staying motivated Here’s to your dream, idea, passion getting the boost it deserves from you

1

Get clear on what you want to do, achieve, create, experience etc. Write it out and then give yourself a deadline. Something that is achievable and realistic.

Without a timescale things have a habit of becoming pipe dreams and the thing that is talked about but never materialised. Revisit this daily and make it a sacred and intimate moment for you. It will feed your big WHY and get you juiced up for taking action.

2

Create a plan! Outline the steps and actions that will manifest what you want to focus on and get them in your diary. If you are saying what diary…get one they are immensely helpful.

3

Create strong boundaries so the patterns of sacrificing ‘you’ and your dream can stop. Busying yourself with other people’s lives when you are not being paid for it and often thanked for it is masking your lack of commitment to you. It’s not about saying to loved ones you can’t count on me, but time to get real with how much it is a copping out of your life ‘yes’ for you.

Also with this having a timetable that you stick to in a day will help.

4

Give yourself rewards. Yes I am talking carrot dangling here, but why not, nothing like a treat to help raise that motivation bar.

5

Give yourself a break if you notice you are lacking the motivation to stick to your plan. Sometimes let yourself get deliberately distracted for a fixed amount of time and then get back to ‘doing despite’! Doing despite is one of my personal mottos as you sometimes have to throw yourself at something to move through the reasons why not! But...you can spontaneously get your motivation mojo back when you just change your energy. It’s not the same as caving in it is more like you are being smart and rebuilding your motivation store!

Word of warning if this becomes a pattern the question to ask is, ‘do I really want to do this…?’ This is when lack of motivation is a great ally and messenger, so it’s not all bad.

6

Get some help as you don’t have to figure it all out alone. Especially as the bigger your mission the easier it is to lose yourself in reasons why not. In a world of coaching, there will be a coach to help you achieve what you want, someone who can guide you and motivate you. Especially if you know you are the distracted type as getting to the route of the fear is significant.

7

Don’t obsess, motivation is impacted by so many things and if you follow the steps above you will find that you are going to be on track to end 2012 with a high! The truth is if you are in balance then some distraction can be good for you, it can be the motivator as no one wants to go to the other extreme of being a control junkie…

Apart from blogging, free lance journalism and clothes designing with my grandmother, I’m an English teacher.

I think, even in the modern times, women don’t have the same chances as men. And if we have, men can make our lives so much harder in the office environment and so ever. However, our job, as women, is to conquer all the spaces we can to make society as equal as possible… on the other hand, women can do whatever they want in this country. They’re also president! Right now, we have a woman doing pretty well as the head-chief of the government.

I use it for everything, to work, to have fun. I can’t live without! It’s amazing the sense of community we all have nowadays and the urgent need to see what’s going on in our neighborhood, city, country, all over the world…

culture As everywhere, America is a huge influence. To go there has become so cheap that; today you spend less travelling to Miami than to some cities of Brazil. Here, travel internationally is, in general, cheaper than travelling domestically and it has changed the local culture and the sense of a globalized world. On the other hand, Portugal is still strong for Brazilians. If we decide to travel to Europe, for example, Lisbon is our first stop. So, Brazilians go there a lot and their culture is a bit similar to ours. Plus, I have to say, I love their food!

fun I love dancing! I take classes 4 times a week! In fact, I dance everyday. It’s a passion, I love classical ballet. I’m also very into music, I can play the guitar and when I have some spare time, I really enjoy composing some songs…

living As everyone, I love New York, most of all, and Paris. However, I would love to live in Buenos Aires, Argentina. What a charming city in South America!

men They’re very flirtatious and sexist, but nothing as exaggerated as in Cuba for example. They respect it if a woman rejects them.

travel I love travelling, even when it wasn’t as fashionable as it is today. Since my teens, I’ve never missed a chance to travel, and I’ve been to almost all the important cities of Brazil! Internationally, I’ve been to some great countries like England, France, Spain, South Africa, Cuba, America, Argentina, Portugal… however I really wish I could travel more and I dream of visiting Italy and Japan in the near future…

women You mean, how Brazilian women are? I think women here are open minded, as we live in a mixed culture country, and also very into looking good no matter what. Women in Brazil love fashion and all the beauty rituals. Nails, hair, clothes, they do it all! That’s why people say Brazilian women are beautiful, they work hard for that!

location Brazil From Rio de Janeiro, but currently living in Recife

Working without boundaries

I

woke up the day after Usain Bolt had won another Gold medal for Jamaica in the Olympics. The first man to win 6 Olympic gold medals and 5 time world champion. He is 25 and comes from a country village called ‘Trelawney’ in Jamaica. My parents too come from Jamaica in St Anne’s Bay where Robert Nesta Marley and Marcus Mosiah Garvey were born. Jamaica was again on the map and I lay in bed thinking and wondering about the drivers that would keep Usain Bolt going again and again and again. Motivation needs drivers! There has to be something, someone, a cause, a deadline, a lifeline something that will keep you moving towards the goals you have set or that have been set for you. As a motivational speaker, I am aware of the challenges which many of us have when it comes to sustaining motivation. As someone who often found it hard to stick to schedules in the past, I now make list with very achievable targets which, once met, I have the pleasure of ticking off! Having a whole project with no steps is a model which I know does not work for me. The positive thing about having steps against which to measure your achievement and advancement towards the end goal can also support you with future projects and planning as your template can be modified to fit the desired outcome. As a result of this, I plan for at least one week ahead. I suggest that any plan for the week also allows some room for flexibility or eventualities which may come up! The plan for the week will be an important part of maintaining your motivation. A strategy for how you are going to eat also needs to be included. Understand that your diet is a crucial part of maintaining good energy. The energy which will allow you to carry out the planned activities, then my dears, you have to plan how, when and where you are going to eat! Nipping out one day for a ‘burger and chips’ is okay…if it’s just the one day! What will happen on the other days though? I recall when I followed the ‘Eat breakfast like a King’, ‘lunch like a prince’ and ‘supper like a pauper’ model. The basic meaning of which is to eat big in the morning, small in the evening and middle sized meal in the afternoon. As my parents come from Jamaica and I grew up on African food my love for yam, green bananas, ackee

Mbeke Waseme is a Management Coach (currently at Channel 4), Trainer, Educational Consultant, Mother of Two, Author and Photographer.

with saltfish or callaloo with saltfish or red peas stew has never waned! All bring back positive memories! So, I tried my ‘eat like a king’ with yam, banana and steamed fish for about three weeks. The plus side was that I ate well each morning, didn’t require lunch until around 2.30-3.00pm and didn’t snack in-between breakfast and lunch at all. The reality however was that I had to shop two to three times each week whilst working 1.5 hours from my home in a neighbourhood where African foods were not readily available. I’d rush back to my part of London before the African owned stores closed and it became stressful! I reverted to oat groats until I could come up with a better option! On reflection, it was a great idea and I felt wonderful while it lasted. It however wasn’t practical for me in an ‘employed’ state. As a self-employed individual, I have so much more freedom around these areas of my life and whilst I cannot maintain this regime every day, I can certainly maintain it much more regularly than if I were in a 9-5 job. So do plan your diet well, in the same way that you plan your meetings, your exercise and your social appointments. The last area of motivation which I’d like to touch on here is the driver which comes from your ‘purpose’ for being here. This is linked to having a clear understanding and analysis of your character, strengths and areas for development. This may come from your own intuition and insight. You may know exactly what is right for you and have been able to move towards that reality. If you however have not, there are many tools out there which may be used to support you with development, character and skill assessments as you plan your move forward. Why could this be important? It could be important as whether we work for ourselves or for someone else, we have the right to be motivated, inspired and to feel as if ‘this’ is happening ‘on purpose’ and not ‘by accident’.

“ ” People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing – that’s why we recommend it daily. – Zig Ziglar

When you truly move towards knowing and understanding what your drivers are, you will be able to keep going and to keep motivating yourself over and over again.

YOU-ology It’s in your hands Palmistry, Palm Reading, Chirology, Chiromancy... whatever you chose to call this it involves the practice of ‘reading’ or ‘assessing’ the appearance of your palm in order to highlight your characteristics or paint a picture of your future. Anything from the flexibility of your fingers to the lines in your hand can alert a palm reader to a fate, or future challenge that awaits you. There are many beliefs regarding what hand should be read (left or right), what the hands represent (past or future) and even if they are gender appropriate (right for men, left for women). In reality receiving a reading can be as much about the reader as it is about you, but don’t let this put you off as there is much to discover…

It’s all about S

ome believe that knowing yourself is the key to health, wealth and happiness but the path to selfdiscovery rarely runneth smooth.

Are you affected by the waxing of the moon? Do your hands hold the secret to your past? Is your name the reason why you love being the centre of attention?

Before you scoff wait a minute!

Interpretation If you choose to study palmistry in order to read your own palms note that there is an awful lot of material to wade through. Readings are often low cost (20 GBP/ 35 USD) and it is definitely worth visiting a trained palm reader first. This way you can use any subsequent research to confirm (or denounce) what they say about you. As our starter for ten we’ve picked out some of the key elements of palm reading for you but log on to seventy2minutes.com for some useful links!.

The shape of things to come?

Thumb

Will power. Flexible thumbs suggest adaptability whilst rigid thumbs suggest inflexibility.

Index Finger (1st)

Jupiter. Ego, fortune, career. Length is reflective of dominance, desire to lead and advance in life. The longer the finger the stronger these elements.

Middle Finger (2nd)

Saturn. Sociability, responsibility, law abiding. Longer lengths suggest aloofness and shorter lengths suggest carelessness.

Ring Finger (3rd)

Sun. Fame, intelligence. Long fingers (judged by being longer than the index) suggests risk taking and creativity.

Little Finger (4th)

Mercury. Power, health, communication. Long fingers (above the first phalanx of the ring finger) suggest inherent talent, eloquence and high intelligence.

Some palm readers will look at the shape of your hand to determine traits that describe your personality: FIRE HANDS Typically longer palms with shorter fingers and square in shape. These people are thought to be passionate, tempestuos and ambitious. AIR HANDS Typically equal palms and fingers with protruding knuckles. These types are thought to be intellectual. WATER HANDS Typically oval palm with lengthy fingers. These are the hands of creatives. EARTH HANDS Typically equal palms and fingers, broad, thick and coarse. Earth associated with practicality, vitality and steadfastness.

The length of my palm (longer vertically, shorter horizontally) and fingers reflect WATER HANDS, indicative of creativity, sensitivity and one who is emotional. My flexible thumb, long and tapered at the base, suggests adaptability, faithfulness and a knack for diplomacy.

Lines Majorly consisting of the Heart (Love, attraction), Head (Learning, communication, knowledge) and Life (Vitality, physical health, life changes) lines. It’s felt that almost all people should exhibit these lines in their hands.

Mounts Complementing the lines are mounts, separated into 7 distinct segments made up of 10 areas, which correspond with the planets (Mars has 3). It’s thought that a study of the mounts will reveal insights about how you manage these planetary influences (e.g. Moon = emotions)
