Desire... ... the starting point of all personal achievements, so says Napoleon Hill. Before you can invest faith in that achievement, any achievement, you have to want it first. The game changer is admitting to yourself that this thing, whatever it is, is the very thing you want. Nothing else will do.

So; what do you want?

When do you want it by?

How much of it do you want and what are you prepared to do to get it?

Ahhh, there’s the rub; what are you prepared to do to get it?

Desire, and what it brings into your life, is clearly not as simple as wishing for a sunny day and then basking the in rays of that sunshine. There are consequences. The actions of greedy bankers, jealous exes and deceitful politicians are rooted in desire and this has, unfortunately, tainted its power a little.

Desire is less of an attractive thing when linked to economic turmoil, suppressive policies and sexual violence. It’s also, often, seen as a very selfish emotion. Your desires, even if for the betterment of those around you, belong to you. The choices you make to pursue those desires are yours and if those desires are all consuming those around you could feel a tad neglected.

Chalk this down to the ‘sacrifice’… if you must… remember that thing you were prepared to do?

ike most of my interviews the conversation begins with the weather. Normally I would put this down to the Britishness of those I’m talking to but it’s March, England and still snowing!

Justification for a weather related rant, in my humble opinion.

Carly pacifies my usual weather envy by explaining that LA has had its own spell of haphazard cold weather, not UK level, but random enough to make me feel a little bit better.

I ask if it’s ever snowed in LA and this triggers an anecdote about London’s insistence on never putting up tents, even when the weather is exceptionally bad.

When covering The Dictator premier it started raining and they never put up a tent… at the Baftas they didn’t put up a tent, at the British Film Institute Festival they wouldn’t put up a tent. She describes it as ‘insane’. It could be the British stiff upper lip but for the interviewer no one wants to stop.

We laugh about the prospect of Ugg boots under ball gowns as I introduce the concept behind 72M Magazine – that it’s aimed at busy women, balancing business, life, work, ambitions and so forth. Carly’s bio makes her a perfect candidate and I’m not shy about telling her this. I also introduce the fact that she’s normally the interviewer “I’m horrible at interviews. There are some that are hideous and the internet is the worst, especially if they’re video interviews, because it still remains up there forever” She says, and I sympathise. I’ve steered clear of video interviews for this very reason but YouTube and Vimeo aren’t going away any time soon…

The first thing that struck me about Carly is her intellect.

If you’ve read my interview with Tehmina Sunny you’ll already know that I have a thing for super intelligent women. Whilst it’s impossible to judge a person’s intellect on looks alone a first class Law degree from Durham University, at the age of 19 pretty much seals it for me.

Carly, by her own admission, is the daughter of very strict, academic parents. Growing up in Scotland she had Stage School dreams but they had education in mind.

Neither mathematical nor scientific she felt her academic strengths were likely to be in the field of English, plus she loved watching Perry Mason and Ally McBeal.

Self-deprecation is a very British thing and when she brushes off her achievements I have to remind her that we’re talking about Durham University [the 3rd oldest university in England, after Oxford and Cambridge, in the top 5 UK universities and top 100 in the world rankings (2012) and QS world ranking (2012)] and firsts don’t come easy. You’re going to need natural aptitude and a heavy dose of hard work.

She continues to describe her frustration at the UK system where applying for Oxford university automatically rules

“There are definitely people who are put into the category of tough interviews and then there are those you just catch on a bad day ” you out for Cambridge, whilst in the US an applicant can target Harvard, Yale and Brown. Nonetheless she did well in school and Law was a natural progression that has taught her about analysing, arguing and interviewing.

Then came the gap year; and Vogue.

Carly, burned out after graduating at 19, with her 1st (and the only girl to have done so), was told by the Law firm she wanted to work at that she was really quite young and ought to take that gap year before

seventy2minutes with: carly steel her LPC [which she was going to do at Oxford]. She decided to do it and landed a position at Vogue; ideal for the girl who had long nursed a love for performance and then honed her interviewing skills through Law. However, in Hollywood, it’s rarely about the space between your ears and increasingly about what you’re wearing, where you train… what you’re eating. I’m curious about this dynamic of personal branding that has the world hooked on celebrity and the impact it has on her personal branding. How does she want people to receive her?

“That’s still a work in progress!”

She responds frankly. She’s starting to discover this more and more, admitting that at first she didn’t have a clue.

“My first interview was with Richard Gere and I just got thrown into it and my sole goal was to just get through it because I was humiliating myself!”

Carly adds that she started with pretty low expectations but once she could get through interviewing people without humiliating herself [her words, I swear] she started to work on finessing. Confessing to liking a mix of the fun and the serious, the sporting and the entertaining she wants to be taken seriously [strict and academic upbringing] but not be thought of as boring. Ultimately she is in the entertainment realm.

I point out that, essentially, as a reporter, who has acted [e.g. He’s Just Not That into You, Unstoppable] she is the proverbial poacher turned game keeper, turned poacher again and she acknowledges how different these experiences have been. A lot of live hosting at big awards shows; like the Oscars, never allow more than one take. In general, in entertainment reporting, you rarely have more than one take but scripted performances are about perfection therefore you have several takes, Carly explains, so it’s about self-development and there are certainly plenty of similarities between the two.

Acting techniques are used by Carly, when hosting, especially when talking to the camera or when talking about subjects that she’s not particularly connected to.

She’s also more comfortable with the camera than she is with lots of people and, the way she feels acting is going, there are very few chameleon actors and it has become more about what the individual can bring to the part.

I press her about the challenges she has faced and, as I suspected, there are many every day; the juggling act being the biggest.

“People don’t realise that the actors don’t just come up to you and give you however long you want with them.

seventy2minutes with: carly steel You have pressure to get in particular questions whilst making them feel very relaxed and like you have all the time in the world; even though you only have maybe a minute and a half!”

Then there’s dealing with their publicist and keeping an eye on whose coming next, whether you’re able to take a break, the tweeting and Facebook… multitasking, she declares, is not a skill she’s naturally endowed with!

What of those difficult interviews? She laughs.

Diplomatically she explains that it depends on the mood of the person. There are definitely people who are put into the category of tough interviews and then there are those you just catch on a bad day. As we all have bad days she’s reticent to name names especially when she’s not quite sure what category they fall into! Nevertheless she admits that it is hard when you get people with one word answers.

Having recently interviewed a well know comedic actor, who everyone thinks is really lovely, that was completely grumpy she’s well aware that public perceptions can make a miserable interview even worse! It can quickly feel like it’s all your fault so you work harder to bring them around.

This leads me to the assumption that there must be other reporters out there she admires or aspires to be like, others who deal with these challenges too…

Piers Morgan.

Controversial, but she loves what he’s doing on CNN. She know he’s very polarising but his British sense of humour and cheeky, witty style appeal to her. Mostly she loves that he just came in and took over that coveted Larry King chair.

Then there’s Katie Couric. Carly recently covered the Oscar nominees’ luncheon for TV Guide Network and they were right next to each other [Katie is one of the official Oscar correspondents for ABC]. Carly describes Katie’s skill of being able to ‘really put the knife in whilst it comes out really sweet so you don’t even know she’s done it.’ Apparently she can make everything she’s talking about seem really gentle and sweet, even when it’s not!

So where now for Brand Steel?

Carly’s interested in all aspects of life and people from different walks of life and different industries.

Film is her number 1 love. She would love to have a film show and a more general, broad interview show.

Something like a hybrid reality/interview show where the host spends time with the talent and really gets to know them. Oprah has started to do that on OWN with Oprah’s next chapter. She’d also love to interview Johnny Depp. He’s supposed to be a tough interview which makes it all the more appealing to her.

Now I’m curious!

My curiosity is further aroused by the revelation that he does not enjoy press. He does not like giving interviews. Obviously he’s handsome, she states, charismatic and very fascinating, but she genuinely has so many questions for him and would love to spend a day in the life of Johnny Depp.

Carly...on Desire I have a lot of burning desires, past, present and future! Manifesting things is an interesting topic which I’ve started to explore. There have been a lot of coincidences which I find fascinating. If you really do want something, from the bottom of your heart, you can literally will it into existence. I grew up in the countryside in Scotland, now living in LA, having worked at Vogue, having worked at E!, Network and TV Guide and doing this job… there are a million people who I’m sure can do a lot of these jobs a million times better so I’ve been more introspective and, sort of, figuring out why and how this has all come about. I think you have to work very hard at what you want, really think about what you want, be clear and specific then do everything you can to make it happen.

The worst thing about this industry is that for everything I do there’s been a hundred million things that I haven’t done. Every day you get turned down for things that you really, really want. It’s the sliding doors moment that could be life transforming. I’ve had major roles in major movies that I’ve gotten and then another person, who they first offered it to, decides they want it so you’re off it, or you’re in wardrobe fitting and then you’re off it before it starts or the funding falls out and it doesn’t happen.

There are so many instance of that, it happens all the time so it’s really hard making it, especially in this job when there’s a project that you’re really excited about, you fall in love with, you think you’re getting it and it gets ripped away from you and it’s awful.

If you’re in entertainment you want to be an artist, you want to be creative and retain certain sensitivities. You don’t want to become a hardened, icy person because that’s not going to be engaging or fun for people to watch and relate to. Yet at the same time you can’t be too sensitive and engage in it emotionally because it is very difficult and very heart-breaking so you have to maintain that balance.

If I could speak to my younger self at the beginning of this journey that I’m on I would tell her to be more

seventy2minutes with: carly steel diplomatic and to have more of a filter between what she thinks and what she says. I have no filter. I speak my mind and I’m far too honest. I’ve got into so much trouble because of that and that’s something I continue to work on, having more of a filter. I tend to be ruled by my emotions and I tend to act before thinking so I would say to my younger self “think before you act, when in doubt just don’t say anything!”.

Words to the wise women of the world... … in terms of academics you learn so much. In terms of a discipline it can be applied to anything you want to do in life so that training is excellent and there are qualities you can fall back on. I have a plan A, B, C, D and E for most things that I do and I look for longevity. You only live once, you should go for what you want. You should maximise any connections, friends, and friends of friends who might be able to help you and not be afraid to ask for help from people. You can only be turned down and that certainly has happened to me millions of times!

Every time you get turned down, the one time someone says ‘yes’ can change your life. That would definitely be my advice to them. Working for free, getting interns, work placements; all these are really useful to put a foot into it [a career] before you become fully submerged

Seventy2Minutes and 72M are about getting ready for everything life has to throw your way. In Carly’s line of work being prepared is clearly very important so what does she do to get ready for the world she finds herself in?

The armour goes on. This job is not for the faint hearted. I think about my questions, I do a lot of research, the more research I do the more prepared I feel, the more prepared I feel the more loose I can be once I get to the shoot. It’s a weird juxtaposition but it works for me. It’s a real mind, body, soul preparation and there is an expectation with your physical brand as well. You have to make sure you’re not getting lazy with that aspect and that you’re constantly working every day to be the best you can be. To sound the best, look the best, be the best, have the best question and to be on top form [personality wise]. It’s very all-encompassing as a job, you cannot let one of these things slip or the whole thing slips Every day is different in this job. Every day is a new film premier, a new film junket, a new awards show so in that respect it is something new every day and that is what I really love about it.

hen looking for desire, not my own, but what others thought ‘desire’ to be it surprised me that ‘sex’ and ‘chocolate’ were the frequent associations. I could presume that the world is full of lascivious gluttons but decide instead that, maybe, somewhere along the way we’ve managed to lose our understanding of what desire truly is.

If we look at desire through the lens of the English Dictionary it means a ‘wish or longing’. Its etymological roots stem from the early 13th century from the French ‘desirrer’ or the Latin ‘desiderare’ and the meanings remain ‘to wish, desire, long for’ and ‘to wish, demand, expect’. Another point of view lies in the phrase ‘de sidere’, or ‘from the stars’.

So, pun aside, ‘when you wish on the stars’ what are you expecting in return? Sex and chocolate? Whilst harbouring desires for sex and chocolate is no crime it’s important to grasp the power of these desires. It’s potentially the worst kept Secret in the world that you can will into being the things that you desire the most so it should come as no surprise that sex and chocolate permeate every aspect of our lives, to the degree that we now complain about the over-sexualisation of everything. In monetary terms the sex industry is worth $5000 - $7000 Billion [ISJ.org.uk] and the global chocolate market is predicted to grow from $83.2 Billion to $98.3 Billion by 2016 [MarketsandMarkets.com]. We can interpret this one of two ways. Our desires have fuelled these or these have fuelled our desires. The first suggests responsibility. We want this so it has manifested. The second downplays our involvement and suggests that we only want these things because they are readily available.

When listing my own desires sex and chocolate do not feature. I’m not a nun nor am I allergic to cocoa but I have spent a great many years exploring what it means to be me. My date of birth, my name, the position of the planets when I was born, the shape of my face, the lines in the palm of my hands, my position in my family and many more besides. The conclusion results in a brief list of one. My heart’s desire is to live my life according to my own terms.

What of your desires? There’s plenty of sex and chocolate to go around, and more if you so wish, but how deep has your search taken you?

In numerology, the numerical equation of your name, the vowels in your name are said to reflect your souls vibration; the soul’s urge. The inference is that beneath the face you present to the world, and the surface of all the things you think you want, lays the naked truth of your souls desires. An inclination for adventure, a love of all things beautiful, a hankering for individuality or the insurmountable yearning for peace… your true

in search of desire desires are soul deep and are thought to be the driving force behind every decision you make; whether you know it or not.

In the infamous book ‘Think and Grow Rich’ Napoleon Hill testifies to the success of a collection of his contemporaries and suggests that the beginning of all achievement is desire. Nothing is done without someone having willed it. This places a lot of power in our courts and we all should know, after several franchise reboots, what comes with great power…

Then we have popular motivational speakers like the late Zig Ziglar and the effervescent Tony Robbins reinforcing the perception that we can reach the very heights that we dream of if only we stuck at it a little longer… tried a little harder… reached a little higher… dug a little deeper.

There’s plenty of sex and chocolate to go around, and more if you so wish The sceptic in us might rail against the industry that has blossomed on the soil of ‘self-help’ enthusiasm. The ‘selfhelp’ industry has been called everything from a cult [High Season for the self-help industry, The Independent, 2011], to fraud [Is the self-help industry a fraud? Psychology Today, 2011]. It’s easy to see why when you realise that it’s valued at $10 Billion in the USA alone for we, collectively, tend to view with suspicion anything ‘stained’ with big money; although becoming a millionaire seems to be a persisting fantasy of many [The top 50 things people want to do before they die, The Daily Mail, 2013].

This industry has also been criticised for causing disempowerment [Time to turn a critical eye on the self-help industry? The Open University, 2013] as those unable to manifest Ferrari Testarossa’s, holiday homes in the Amalfi and sexy ‘other halves’ are left feeling worthless and wholly disappointed.

This brings us back to that fundamental misunderstanding of desire. We have come to view it as satisfaction of the flesh or manifestation of material goods; things that are, in the grand scheme of things, fleeting.

Maybe the search for desire starts with a search for self. “I know what I want because I know what, and who, I am” is a far more powerful position to begin with when trying to connect with that force that lives behind the power of your daily actions.

in search of desire Imagine what you could achieve if every decision, made every day, moved you in the direction of your soul desire?

Achievements are not made of dreams you indulge in when sleeping; they are repeated actions, learned patterns of behaviour, focused decision making, and nothing holds your focus longer than something you really, really, want.

The search for desire and self are not new. Everyone, from scientists, philosophers, sports personalities, and self-appointed gurus, has paved the way since the dawn of time, it seems. My search unearthed many quotes and insights of which I fell in love with these; It is hard to contend against one’s heart’s desire; for whatever it wishes to have it buys at the cost of soul.

Heraclitus Knowledge of the self is the mother of all knowledge.

So it is incumbent on me to know my self, to know it completely, to know its minutiae, its characteristics, its subtleties, and its very atoms.

Khalil Gibran …if you know yourself and what you’re capable of, it’s just a matter of opportunity.

Bryan Cranston Nothing so succinctly highlighted how dominant your true desire can be, the importance of selfknowledge and the power of connecting the two.

Now the million dollar question; who are you and what do you want?

When our editor revealed the theme of this issue I thought: “Cool, this will be an easy one”. Two months and a blank page staring back at me later, I decided to get some inspirational help from my friends. Over on Facebook I went, with a “fun” word association game about “desire”. Some of the answers I got were “chocolate”, “more chocolate”, (obviously) “sex”, “Lamborghini”, “Prada bag”. My answer would have been: “U2”.

Not a tad wiser I started to seriously ponder what desire -really- meant to me. Surely it means to want, to long for, to crave....but, all Louboutins and Jimmy Choos aside, I realized that desire is actually what makes us get out of bed every single day (you thought it was your boss?): Desire is the fundamental motivation of all human action.

Then the Biologist in me took over (yes, I have a degree): Desire is the trigger of progress. If you look at it that way, desire seems to be an inevitable and elementary part of human evolution. It is the inner spark in us humans that drives us, the sum of all questions seeking for an answer. This desire can neither be explained, nor controlled.

All you can do is embrace it and...unleash it.

Tight clothes and me have never been good friends: when I was younger, I was way too insecure to show off my larger-than-life- Mediterranean curves.

Nowadays, with maturity and wisdom (ok, and dieting) bringing a grin of self-enlightenment to my face, well, I just don’t care anymore.

No Call to Action - People are more likely to respond to a sale or service if you give them clear concise calls to action.

What You Can Do: A call to action can be as simple as “Click Here to Subscribe” or “Read the Entire Article”.

Use as many as is appropriate to get your visitors to do the desired action. When you post something, you can ask people to retweet or share on their Facebook page. Offer discounts on your products with calls to action like “Click Here to Get $25.00 Off Your First Order” or “Click Button for Special Offer”. The possibilities are endless and effective!

Not Writing Effective Profiles – Your

profile is the first impression that most people will get of you so you want to make it impressive.

Just slapping up your name and hometown is not going to get the job done. A complete well-written profile will help build your credibility.

hat does ‘desire’ mean to you?

Lust for an unobtainable fantasy object?

The secretary in stockings and suspenders?

The man from the new Diet Coke advert?

Fantasies are normally just that, unless you’re the boss of that secretary, unobtainable goals best left that way, but still desirable.

But what of the fantasy of obtaining our goals through desire?

In this case the desire to make the most of the talents we’ve been given by whoever is running this show upstairs.

I don’t think this magazine is the forum for me to reveal my inner most fantasy desires, if my Mum ever gets the hang of e-magazines, she may end up reading this, so instead I’ll focus on the pre-watershed aspects of desire.

I support a football team who are not exactly Premier League, they’re not even Premier Inn. They’re called Hereford United and as a family we follow them mainly due to my Dad going to school there, and me being born in the city, and I know I’ll be following them until one of us ceases to exist. Because of our status in the football food chain, the personnel we are able to employ on the pitch are not always of the highest calibre. We pay peanuts and get monkeys as far as the talent goes, often including hand me downs from the bigger fish.

Sometimes on loan, sometimes on a permanent basis, there are two types. The ones that think two years as a schoolboy at Manchester United mean they’re God’s gift to football give them a season of having to fend for themselves trawling football’s outposts and often they sink without a trace.

Or there are the ones with that desire to bounce back who realise a couple of years at Hereford’s level can be the springboard back to the big time, if they put the effort in. It’s fair to say it’s the latter that we welcome.

In fact there’s a third category, the ones happy to be a big fish in a small pool, and one of my favourite players, who I won’t name, probably had more talent with a ball at his feet than any other I’ve seen, but lacked the desire by his

own admission, and therefore never really made the step back up, something I think he probably regrets now.

In all walks of life, you have to want it, talent helps, but there are so many talented people out there who don’t make it because they don’t really want it enough.

Of late the name of Gareth Bale is being mentioned alongside the footballing gods of Messi and Ronaldo, the lad always had the talent of course, but it’s the extra hours on the training pitch perfecting his skills that now make him such a sought after player.

In my own career in radio, if I’m honest I could have got a lot higher, but for a variety of reasons although I worked hard, I didn’t hone the skills as much as I could have done, and now I see others who applied themselves more working at that higher level, and fair play to them.

It’s why I’m really trying with my writing, there are many times when it’s a struggle, when you’re faced with 200 pages to edit for the ninth time, but you know you have to do it, you have to have that desire to get yourself probably ninety per cent of the way down the track, before the publishers and agents help you to achieve that lucrative final ten per cent.

Many won’t get there, who knows whether I will, but like I say it won’t be for lack of trying.

But here’s a question to ponder before I go.

Does a lack of desire make you a lesser person? Or does it just mean that you don’t feel the need to prove yourself, to better yourself, maybe instead of wanting to be lots happier, you’re just happy with your lot?

o try and encapsulate all that is good about Serbian art, music and food in one short article feels, at best, like an exercise in futility. discover Nestling amongst the restaurants and street performers are a number of art galleries displaying the rich mix of artistic styles with influences from the myriad of cultures that have left their mark on Belgrade down the centuries.

Skadarlija is truly a great place to enjoy a feast of superb traditional Serbian cuisine or to simply order a Turkish coffee or a beer and sit back and watch the exuberant, colourful world of Belgrade go by.

I am constantly amazed at the popularity of the likes of Ronald and the “Coffee Experiences” here in Belgrade. The city has a host of kafanas and street food vendors offering home style pljeskavica (the most delicious burgers you could ever hope to taste) and wonderfully rich, dark coffee that, in my opinion, is immeasurably better than

Don’t be fooled, however, into believing that Belgrade only has the traditional on offer. Dotted along the banks of the River Sava are the splavs (rafts). If turbo folk and European music styles are more to your taste then here you can find more than enough choice to keep you happy for many a long night and early morning. Belgrade in the summer never seems to want to sleep and the multitude of raft

clubs and restaurants stay open into the very early hours to provide the energetic visitor with excellent food and an eclectic mix of live music.

Now, while I profess to know very little about the mysterious cult of fashion, I have it on good authority that Belgrade boasts a growing number of very exciting young designers.

Concert goers are also well catered for in Belgrade with a few large venues playing host to the likes of Madonna, The Rolling Stones, Belgrade Fashion week showcases Jennifer Lopez and Metallica in recent years and Depeche Mode, Mark Knopfler, Dave is an English national living in Belgrade, Rammstein, a CELTA qualified English language teacher, Andrea Bocelli writer, proofreader and language editor. and Pink Floyd all due LINKEDIN/Dave Calcutt to visit here later this year.

Shakespeare in Serbian anyone?

One of my English language students eagerly informed me recently that he had been to see a performance of The Merchant of Venice in Serbian. Just as I was about to congratulate him on his cultural education he then proceeded to tell me that he left the theatre, and his girlfriend!, during the interval in order to catch the second half of the Real Madrid vs Manchester United Champions League game. Manchester United lost so I consider that to be an adequately cultural high point to compensate for missing Shakespeare’s second half Given that this is 72M and there are some who may be interested in the fashion offerings in Belgrade I feel it is apt for me to give, at least, a small mention to the subject.

The Makato Aida interview

W

hen I was 11, attending school back home in England, all of a sudden, I started looking at girls differently. It’s at this onset of puberty, when our minds change, we start kissing, going on dates, holding hands and becoming more and more attracted to the opposite sex.

In Japan the school girl is, in many cases, both a power symbol and powerful. In the culture, older men can pay a young girl in products (bags, clothes, cell phones) to simply spend time with them and although this is supposed to be an innocent affair, in principle, things can develop quickly and few artists focus as much on this innocence and desirability of a school girl, than Aida Makoto. With prostitution, happening bars, soap lands and any manor of random sex related establishment existing, the Japanese art culture has, and is, deeply affected by its sex culture, as with any culture.

It’s safe to say Aida Makoto is one of the biggest artists in Japan today and one of the most talented artists in the world. The talent, ability, scale and imagination of this man is second to none and should make many artists step back and see just how much they need to learn.

I’ve heard a lot about this man, from being disturbed, a parasite on the image of Japan, a pervert, a master artist and so many others. It’s true, many of his works revolve around shocking imagery of naked female amputees, being lead around by a collar for sexual purposes and it’s true there is a video of him masturbating for some time, which was filmed at an exhibition in NYC and it’s true many of his works are based around sex and young girls. With that said, he’s one of the most controversial and talented artists in the world today and I’d recommend going to his exhibition at the Mori Art Museum, Roppongi, Tokyo.

After seeing Mr Aida’s exhibition, I can’t say I enjoyed the entire experience, as I felt the space was simply too big and he should have done a slightly smaller exhibition.

Showing such a large body of work, spanning his entire career, was simply lost on me, as I really wanted to see his best pieces, which I did in the final gallery of the exhibition. But don’t get me wrong, for some, seeing how he developed, is maybe even more fascinating.

Aida’s exhibition, gave me a great insight into this controversial Japanese master artist, or so I thought, and therein lies the problem. With so many making assumptions of who an artist is, based on his works, making up any manor of fantastical stories to explain the inner most workings of an artist, in the end we don’t have a clue.

man with a nonchalant attitude. With every question I asked, he took his time and answered with honesty, sincerity and without any care for how it might come across, knowing the interview could portray him in any manner of negative light, he was frankly, just honest.

We spoke for maybe an hour and a half and in that time and I leaned many things about the man behind the art. He loves young girls, or more accurately he loves the idea of young girls, full of youth and energy, unbroken by the harsh world we live in, still maintaining innocence… and who doesn’t like that in our children?

school girls are revered, where sick days don’t exist, where temples are right beside sky scrapers and S & M dungeons are next to fine dining restaurants, it’s impossible to understand anything about the Japanese culture unless you’ve lived here and Aida Makoto’s work takes all of this into account. He’s an exceptionally gifted artist and as with all art, it’s highly subjective, but I personally find both his art and the man, very interesting.

I’m not saying I like all of his art, I don’t, and sometimes I genuinely dislike the art works of some artists I really admire, but when you enter the last Gallery of

He never speaks to young girls as, in his words, “they have nothing to say”, I’m not quoting him exactly, but I believe he feels what could an 11 year old and a man in his 40’s possibly have to discuss? He admires from a distance and I sensed nothing seedy in his words.

He’s modest and although he teaches, he will constantly play down his ability. Maybe you feel this is a Japanese trait, but he has genuine modesty and that’s something I appreciate. Having a few drinks with his students, giving me more than the time agreed for the interview, going to new artists’ exhibitions, working on student projects, all seem to be things he genuinely enjoys. He believes an artist should always create something new, change, evolve and create original art. He believes in the traditional way of developing your career, slow and steady or you could end up like “Vanilla Ice”, “Los Del Rio” or “Johann Pachelbel”.

Lastly, I’d like to sum up this part of the interview, if you meet the man, you will be surprised to find a man so different to your expectations. He’s a man, who’s grown up in a very different society to anyone in the west and his works might be shocking to us, they might even be shocking to some Japanese, but the sex industry, the culture and general life in Japan is something you can only understand after spending real time here.

In the only country to ever be bombed by a nuclear device, where Christianity is not a wide spread religion, where Christian views of sex don’t really apply, where

If you can, I’d recommend going to see “Tensai de Gomennasai” or a rough translation would be “Sorry for being a genius” and make sure you read his statement at the end, if nothing else, you’ll be surprised.

I’d also like to make sure anyone reading this, understands, I do not have an opinion on what’s right or wrong about Aida Makoto’s, in any moral or political context. All I can say is, he’s very talented and I’m looking forward to see what he produces in the coming years.

T

he run up to Christmas can be a funny time for us Brits on The Boulevard. Whilst we are often heard quoting our climate affection for California that we can ski and surf in the same day, our romanticism means that we also miss the crisp frosty mornings, dew glistening on the trees, snow falling gently across the British hills and a hot cup of cocoa , if we decide not to fly east for winter. Deep down though, we know we’re only missing sleet and slush, grey skies and shopper-rage, but it doesn’t stop the longing for that Christmassy feeling. As a transplant I’ve found summer to be a better time to visit home. When you return in late December, family is on the agenda, but all your friends are visiting their families in respective hometowns, so meet-up efficiency slides.

That said, Brits in LA kicked off the month with a Christmas party so that all could come, complete with full Christmas dinner, Santa, lashings of drinks and a community hall style feeling despite being in Hollywood (and yes, there was a red carpet peppered with a few UK soap star names before you ask!). The party scene wound up for me with the VGA Awards after-party at Greystone Manor nightclub. Imagine a pumping nightclub, scantily clad waitresses, and a disproportionate number of guys that code video games. Hmmm, good job I had good friends and a steady supply of booze and canapés to enjoy...

Since LA is full of freelancers, nobody seems to work much through December. It seems as though they sit down for Thanksgiving dinner and American Football and then sleep it off till early January. So it makes a great time for getting away without feeling guilty and unproductive. I took in a quick weekend excursion to ski at Big Bear Mountain (only an hour and a half from LA) before an epic cross-country drive to Telluride in Colorado with my good friends Skeet and Amelia (silly decision road-tripping on deserted highways with the killer from ‘Scream’?)

We stopped halfway at the Grand Canyon, an awe inspiring sight that really doesn’t translate in pictures of film. After a sunset hike, a cozy cabin sleep, and a sunrise stroll we continued to Telluride for three days of ski-ing and shenanigans courtesy of the US Ski Team for the Ski Cross and Snowboard Cross World Cup. An idyllic setting and a stunning hotel apartment suite at the Madeline made for a memorable pre-Christmas vacation, and at amazing value, as I won this at a silent auction to benefit TACA (Talk About Curing Autism). That’s my new party tip, as you get to support good causes and enjoy yourself in one fell swoop. We traveled back via Sedona for a relaxing wind-down at the Sedona Rouge resort, along with some more breath taking views, food, and crazy hippies and their vortexes.

Back in LA, I was fortunate enough to be treated to an advance screening of Les Miserables at the Directors Guild, which I thought was stunning - despite my ears protesting profusely every time Javert hit the screen. Christmas dinner with good friends, stunning sunset cocktails in Laguna Beach, followed by New Year’s Eve food poisoning tied a nice bow on the end of my 2012. Don’t feel sorry for me, after all the partying we get through here, it was actually a nice break (although I did wish I’d seen Tony Bennett sing in 2013 at gazillionaire Alec Gores’ NYE bash at the Hotel Bel Air).

January means one thing in Hollywood. Awards Season. When you know the next two months will be an onslaught of shiny gold statues, over-emotional agent/wife thanking speeches and champagne and canapés like it’s going out of fashion.

One of the first big ones is the Golden Globes, and this year, whilst (surprisingly) not nominated for my 4 and a half lines in Brett Ratner’s unaired pilot (tantrum) I was fortunate / D-list enough to attend the Secret Room Gifting Lounge - a bizarre Hollywood concept that is like a glamorous car boot sale of new stuff you don’t pay for. Think of it like live QVC - talent, media and influencers are invited to meet the makers of products who are hoping for a celebrity fan or endorser and as such I now will probably never have to buy moisturizer, Mexican vacations and subscription-baby-clothing ever again.

My Saturday brunch consisted of Eggs Benedict with a side of Nicole Kidman, Keith Urban, Jon Bon Jovi and Stacy Keibler. The intimate Gold Meets Golden event thrown by CW3PR bought together Olympic Gold Medallists including Missy Franklin and Gabby Douglas with film stars and rockstars at Equinox Sports Club, prior to the Golden Globes themselves and was a perfect way to spend Saturday morning sipping Mimosas, and yes Nicole is as stunning and elegant in person. A busy weekend, many of the stars at this hotfooted it over to BAFTA LA’s Tea Party at the Four Seasons, full of nominees including most of the Les Mis cast, where british designer and sponsor Jennifer Ewah’s

brit on the boulevard Eden Diodati range caught the eye of Anne Hathaway, and worn the next day at the premiere of Schwarzenegger’s The Last Stand by Twilight actress Judi Shekoni, so watch out for her designs as the next hot thing on the red carpet. No rest for the wicked, the entertainment industry then make their pilgrimage to the mountains of Utah for the annual Sundance film festival, started many years ago by Robert Redford in the quaint ski town of Park City. I chose to road trip through Vegas, taking in a delectable rib-eye dinner in the fun but pumping STK restaurant at the Cosmopolitan Hotel, where we had a stunning suite, and unrivalled views from our private balcony, a feature that most Vegas hotels don’t have. We continued the drive through the mountains in a brand new electric Prius, generously supplied by Toyota Santa Monica, and I swear I spent more on coffee on this trip than I spent on gas - incredibly efficient. Toyota were a sponsor for the event I hosted during Sundance along with Beltran Brito Immigration Attorneys - “A Very British Roast” honoring the nominated British Filmmakers - which also raised awareness for Fuel Freedom Foundation, and featured a fantastic live performance by American Idol finalist Crystal Bowersox The rest of Sundance was a kaleidoscope blur of

Aside from being in the company of aviation legends, we gained great advice on finding our partners and sponsors. February was dominated by more awards shows and major events. I attended the Annie’s (animation awards) where the awesome Wreck It Ralph rightly cleaned up. I skipped over SuperBowl (they keep dropping the ball, what is that?), sashayed through Grammy parties, and was wowed at the Wow Creations Oscar Gift Suite, particularly by JetLev Newport Beach, a water-jet pack that basically turns you into a flying superhero, which I can’t wait to try! I chuckled my way through the Toscars, Brits in LA’s alternative awards ceremony where random teams make short parodies of the Oscar-nod films. I watched emerging Irish youth talent in motion at the Cinemagic event along with Samantha Mumba and Ross King, and danced the night away at OK! Magazine’s bash, where I bumped into British actress Camilla Arfwedson who’s set to make a big splash in Hollywood. Oscar weekend was equally glamorous, from the Weinstein event where I schmoozed with Tarantino reminiscing our Cannes shenanigans, and the suave Jamie Foxx wandered over to eloquently introduce himself

parties, films, lounges and fantastically serene skiing that deserves a whole article to itself, so i’ll keep you wondering...

[Which clearly had nothing to do with the couple of gorgeous models in our group]. I watched a private screening of nominated short Buzkashi Boys, for which BOTB supporter Turkish Airlines graciously granted a life-changing experience, by flying over the two teenage stars from Afghanistan to walk the Oscar red carpet, allowing Rally.org’s fundraising to go towards a college career. Oscar Sunday began as it should, predictably, with a nice Brunch; elegantly at an exclusive screening party at the W Hotel; and weirdly awesomely retro-ly with 80’s legend Steve Guttenberg joining us for pizza. Lovely he was, but Johnny Number 5 was nowhere to be seen. I was clearly brushed with his Hollywood success glitter however, as the following week saw me booked as a model for renowned artist Emma Ferrira’s new exhibition at Venice Biennale, and my film Stefano Formaggio being green-lit, so I’m sure I will be abusing my new position as Film Director very soon on the Boulevard.... Watch this space.

Exhausted, we road-tripped back via the Hoover Dam to marvel at the architectural monstrosity, before devouring an gastronomical monstrosity of equal proportion at Hash House A GoGo in Vegas, famous for their oversized portions.

I witnessed grown men broken over the sheer magnitude of their dinner. Shut-eye in the legendary (now tired and resembling the night-shift waitress) Flamingo, and I rushed back to 90210 just in time to attend the Raise Your Voice Gala at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Ironically my raspy post-Sundance party voice got be confused for a patient, at this benefit for celebrated vocal surgeon Steven Zeitels, not bad company to be in, when you consider his former patients are Roger Daltry, Christina Perri, Steven Tyler and Lionel Richie, all whom performed intimate classics on the night. Simply legendary.

ost of us need 7.7 hours of sleep in order for us to function optimally, and it only takes 2-3 days of sleep deprivation (less that 4 hrs a night – listen up mums with small babies) to send our hormones into overdrive. In short sleep is vital to our Muscular recovery and hormonal processes which are linked to fat burn.

Inadequate sleep is something we definitely want to avoid if our goals are to reduce fat but consequently in doing so we also reduce our risk of developing obesity and Diabetes, Great thumbs up for those of us who sleep well....But why, and how, can we check we are doing so?

Sleep loss messes with how your body uses glucose (sugar/carbs) by

As the risk of Insulin Resistance increases; our cravings for high carb foods increase. If we give into these cravings then more demand is placed on the pancreas to secrete even more insulin to clean up the sugar, and the circle goes on.

Eliminating sugar from your eating plan is one of my big principles when working with a client. In times where lack of sleep is unavoidable (shift workers for example), this helps the organ to remain less stressed, and able to do its role in releasing the right amount of Insulin whilst still supporting the clean up the natural sugars we obtain such as fruit.

Between the hours of 10pm and 6am lies your optimal recovery/ sleep window to help cells to repair and bring stress levels down before the daily stresses of life begin the following day! If we miss out on some of these hours or regularly interrupt sleep, we miss out on a crucial recovery period! Sleep deprivation also increases the stress hormone cortisol. In any individual cortisol levels begin to decrease after 2pm in the afternoon and are at their lowest during 10pm and 2am. During these times if you are still working

Avoid Caffeine

If you are following any healthy eating plan, replace with herbal teas such as peppermint or Tulsi. Be careful not to drink much fluid an hour before bed so you avoid the wake up for bathroom runs at crucial times. If you have to have caffeine, drink it before 10am & not after!

Magnesium is also great for muscle recovery and repair top up with supplements like this of an evening but consult a doctor first if you are unsure it’s right for you!

Years ago I attended a workshop and as I sat listening, the speaker stated that we are often the people who sabotage our own success! How? Why? No!! Yes I can be a dramatist at times and I certainly wondered why one would sabotage their own success. After all, didn’t I want success?????

However, on leaving the workshop I thought about the phone calls and texts which I had not returned. The meetings I had arrived at…late! The judgments I had made based on my picture and prejudgments of others who were successful! The sleep I had taken when I needed

to give additional two or three hours to complete that proposal! Yes, self sabotage was a reality that I had played a hand in! I also thought about the stories of ‘successes’ which I had heard and internalized along my life’s journey.

The idea of having two, three or four times my current salary was acceptable to me. However, the possibility of owning millions of pounds was harder to imagine.

What would I do with all that money! So, the thought becomes reality and the money goes elsewhere. After all, I have told the universe that I am not deserving of this.

I also recalled the many people who had gained much, had lost more! Famous ‘celebrities’, people winning the ‘lottery’ and ‘self made millionaires. Many had no experience of how to manage money and the more they earned, the bigger their expenditure become.

Many were bankrupt after their roller coaster spending sprees! I didn’t want to be like them either!!

You know you are worth it but it seems others don’t, well not yet anyway!

Love and sex are things we like to keep private mostly even from those we love on occasion.

Those who break this cardinal rule are often judged, talked about behind their back and labelled in varying degrees of unkindness. If we share about our money desires we fear the same.

Truth is if you fancied someone and never told them and waited for them to notice and want you, it would be a long wait. Playing the flirting game, being coy, pretending you aren’t interested in the hope they take that as the signal you are, while actually deliberately chucking water on the desire seems counterintuitive to me. Of course it is; it’s foolish to

make it so hard for yourself. Keeping your desires hidden isn’t really a good course of action and is simply delaying your passions being fulfilled even if that ends up being elsewhere.

Research suggests women in particular don’t like talking about money or asking for their dues. If you don’t voice your desire with passion and confidence then you can’t cry into your pillow when it doesn’t materialise. You have been playing ‘hokey cokey’ with what you want.

Whether it is a pay rise, case for a bonus or raising your prices because (a) you are worth it and (b) it matches the secret desire you have had for money, the wait and see if it happens by magic, is fizzling out your money desire into something that will always be out of reach.

Fizzled out means you let your boss fob you off again. You accept that maybe next year your bonus will reflect what amazing work you have done. You accept your friend can’t pay you back the money you lent her, yet

she is having another spa weekend.

You don’t want to say anything or make a stand as money is crass and talking about it and maybe even reading about it is makes you crass and let’s not forget uncomfortable.

When it comes to money we have to accept things, there is no doubt to that in all areas of life. It is what it is. The confusion however in accepting is it isn’t the same as surrendering. Surrendering is such a load of poppycock when it comes to having the best life.

The opposite of surrender is not fight either; it simply is to not give up.

If your money desire is not being met then go get it satisfied elsewhere.

Don’t give up. Stop pretending you don’t have a money desire. This ‘I don’t need money’ malarkey or money is wrong and the root of all evil is a cover for the fact that you are struggling to meet your desire. It is also the reason why your money desires remain unfulfilled.

Write in a journal what it is you want more of from money. Write about how different life would be and what more you would do. It is not an ‘if only’ type of energy that you are tapping into, that takes you back into fantasy land! Write practically and unleash your desire into the world. Anchor it, ground it, and own it. You don’t have to share it unless you want to but stop it being a secret, something you are ashamed of, embarrassed or in denial about!

If you desire something you have to make it happen as otherwise it slips back into fantasy or at best it’s always out of reach, right?

Start looking for new jobs; start to make a strong case for a pay rise or great bonus. Start to look at your spending patterns. Believing in the energy of extravagant treats as a fix to counteract the truth that money, desiring it and changing how you live with it feels near impossible. The approach gives an immediate sense of gratification, the high…but then comes the low. It isn’t responsible and it keeps adding to your woe that having a money desire is a bad thing.

It makes you believe your desire will not be achieved. Start living your money dream now rather than later

A no from a boss, a job, a client, or a bank loan means you can be clearer on what you want, and what your next action is going to be, to make your money desire a reality.

A no seen as a closed door or a ‘never’ will just become that for you; instead see it as an open door to limitless opportunity to get what you want elsewhere in another way.

curator The Food Curator (AKA Michael Robinson) is a bon viveur and aficionado of all things food based in London. He has a passion for cooking, dining and American muscle cars.

The main ingredient is of course the lobster. Now you could buy a fresh live one, cook it and leave it to cool. If you do this then follow the cooking instructions as no two lobsters are the same. A good “cheat” is getting a cooked frozen lobster as they are so convenient and defrost well. Bear in mind defrosting time can be overnight or longer.

Here is the hard bit but it is well worth the reward! Remove all the meat from the lobster tail and claws and chop into chunks about the same size as the top half of you thumb.

Put the meat to one side.

In a bowl add the mayonnaise, parsley, a little squeeze of lemon juice, salt and pepper. Mix thoroughly, now taste.

The lemon should just cut through the creaminess of the mayo.

Now add the lobster and mix round once more so that the meat is covered. Leave in the fridge for 30 minutes to an hour, just enough time to let the flavours meld.

Food fashion throws up lots of new concepts, but none recently could be as easy or cool as the lobster roll.

There has been a lot of fuss made over this delicious, luxury sandwich since it broke out of the North Eastern US and made it onto the global foodie stage.

A few restaurants in London are now serving this as a “feature” dish and I’m going to show you how to make this perfect deluxe lunch!

Ingredients

1 x Lobster (average size will make 2 rolls) 2 x White bread rolls 4 x Tbsp Mayonnaise 1 x Tsp finely chopped parsley 1 x Squeeze lemon juice Shredded lettuce for garnish Butter Pinch of salt Pinch of pepper Cayenne pepper to finish

Prepare the lettuce and slice thinly. I usually do this a little in advance of building the sandwich to let the lettuce dry after washing.

The original US version of this uses soft hotdog rolls. I have “Europeanised” mine by using a nice crusty French bread roll. I think the crisp bread is a great partner for the soft, saucy filling.

Slice the bread lengthways and lightly butter the face on both pieces. Put face down in a frying pan on a medium heat and gently toast the faces of the bread until golden.

Now build you roll! When the lobster mix goes on, dust a very small amount of cayenne pepper over it, you can use paprika but you will get a more “smoky” flavour rather than a little kick of spicy heat.

Finish by topping with the lettuce.

There you have it!

Thought to be over 4000 years old Chinese astrology is rooted in astronomy and accords to the Chinese calendar year. Like the Feng Shui explored in Issue 3 it brings together the concepts of Yin and Yang, heaven and earth energy, Confucian wisdom and the 5 elements (Fire, Earth, Metal, Water, and Wood).

Like western Astrology the inner meanderings of Chinese astrology can become very complex. The base understanding, however, remains the same. Your destiny can be determined by your date and time of birth, the position of the planets and comets, and the position of the Sun and Moon.

As with any ‘ology’ there are numerous online tools that you can use to help unravel who you are, according to the Chinese zodiac, but the belief in what you find is yours alone.
