RICHARD SHIPLEY
BIOGRAPHY
Born in 1973, Richard Shipley hails originally from York, where he began painting in the 1980’s as the graffiti artist CageOne; now residing in the South West of England, Richard's artwork is continually evolving and has been stripped back in to a pure abstract aesthetic, which features in popular culture, private collections and Art exhibitions across the globe. The dominant feature in Richard’s work is light in the urban environment and how it is dispersed, dramatically casting shadows across different surfaces, creating contrasting tones and textures. His work immerses the viewer in a conceptual yet soulful representation of the human condition, and subtly invokes whispers of vulnerability and fear.
The work is produced using a variety of materials, from aerosols to charcoal on either wooden panels, canvas or paper. Ranging from very minimal, subtle pieces to bold angular shapes, often blended with aggressive undertones.
With an inspired acknowledgment of such pioneers as Boccioni, Richter and Lowry, Richard Shipley manifests both depth of movement and emotive expression whilst retaining a crafted economy of rich simplicity.

Instantly arresting, with jarring and stormy compositions, Richard Shipley’s provocative compositions leaves no one indifferent. A lattice of intersecting angles, shapes and oblique forms confront the eye. His textured layers of brush work, strident pen strokes and spray paint evoke a gritty urban reality familiar to most of us. As in any urban environment, movement is perpetual. Lines scurry across a stark horizon. Brutal, pointed edges invade shared spaces and threaten to rupture our ordered world. Yet in other pieces Richard takes us to more intimate settings, where a pale haze invites us to explore the tense and unsettled inner spaces within ourselves. In his ‘Red’ series we are enveloped in a deep, crimson maelstrom of emotion. Immersed in shifting currents of red and black contours, the threat to our frail sense of security is acute. Richard’s work is beautiful, rhythmic and discordant. But under each layer of reality I also find truth. Roberto Palma Forjan
