BRISTOL RUGBY: Ellis Genge ready for final challenge as England U20s go for world glory By SteveCotton | Posted: June 19, 2015

Bristol Rugby prop Ellis Genge has played a key role in England reaching the world under-20 final A CORNER of Cremona in Italy will resemble a mini Bristol this weekend, as Ellis Genge’s friends and family head out for the final of the World Rugby Under-20 Championship. Bristol prop Genge has been an integral part of England’s run to the final, contributing to a dominant forward display in the 28-20 semi-final win over South Africa. England face the altogether tougher challenge of toppling New Zealand – 45-7 semi-final winners against France – in tomorrow’s final. And Genge, whose parents Rich and Alison flew out ahead of the semi-final, is expecting more support to arrive for this weekend’s final. “I have a few friends and family coming out now we’ve reached the final – but I think the sound of hot weather and pizza tempted a few of them more than the rugby did,” joked the 20-year-old. “The support has been incredible in general. My parents came out for the semi and I got a tad emotional about that, and rightly so! I would like to thank everyone for all the support I have received.” Genge posted a picture of him handing his match shirt from Monday’s semi-final to his father – and he explained: “My old man is a pessimist most times with my rugby, so I think watching us get through to a world cup final broke his walls down a bit! “I was honoured to give my match shirt to someone who is such a big inspiration of mine.” Genge, who made six first-team appearances for Bristol last season, is proud of England’s performances in reaching the final – but acknowledged they still have
plenty to do before they can celebrate. “It’s far from over yet and we have achieved nothing to date,” he said. “We came here with high expectations and we’re still waiting to fulfil them. “It is exciting beating a great Springbok outfit and getting to the final – and we can’t shy away from that. But we’ve had time to switch off and now we need to focus on our next goal – winning the World Cup. “I have respect for the All Blacks. Having a few friends now who are Kiwi or played over in New Zealand, I’ve had an insight to what they’re like. “As a team, we are excited to test ourselves against a tidy All Blacks outfit, and personally I cannot wait.” To reach the final, England had to bounce back from a 30-18 humbling at the hands of France in their final pool match. And Genge said: “I am proud to be a part of this team, whether we win or lose, and whether we perform or not. “I think the France game was a blessing in disguise for us, because it gave us an eye opener as to what we needed to do to be on our game. We reassessed, came back, and did what we needed to do against the Boks.” England will be looking to win a third successive Under-20 world title tomorrow, having triumphed over South Africa in last year’s final in New Zealand, and over Wales in France in 2013. Some will inevitably be disappointed when they miss out, but the squad we have selected is what we believe to be the best fit for this particular game.” BRISTOL Rugby Ellis Genge has been named in the England Under-20s squad ahead of the Junior World Championship in June.

And now the 19-year-old is looking for a treble when England aim to kick-start their Six Nations campaign after last weekend’s 21-15 loss in Wales. We were our own worst enemies last weekend,” said Genge. “Wales played out of their skin, as we knew they would against England, but our discipline and our sloppiness at the breakdown cost us “But, on a personal level, being involved in the 20s has been class. To make my 20s debut in the same season as my Championship debut for Bristol has been unreal. “It will be great to play our first home match on Friday. On my first appearance at Brickfields for Plymouth, Albion got their first win of the season, so hopefully it will be the same for England on Friday. “Last season, England 20s lost their first Six Nations game 21-15 and went on to defend the World Cup that summer, so that’s what we’re looking to do from here.”
