Blackrock crush ‘Nure to book final spot Leinster schools Junior Cup s/f Blackrock 41 Terenure 3 Tony Ward – Published 10 March 2014 02:30 AM Blackrock’s Junior Cup team matched their senior brethren and moved to within one match of completing successive Junior and Senior Cup doubles for the first time since 1986/87 in a comprehensive seven-try victory at Donnybrook. And whether it is Belvedere or St Michael’s next up (they meet in the second semi-final tomorrow), on this emphatic evidence it is going to take some effort to prevent this Williamstown squad from retaining the U-16 title. You could not but feel for Terenure when, quite apart from going behind to tries touched down by Andrew Savage (five minutes) and fellow front-row Stephen McLoughlin (nine minutes), the first converted by Peter O’Reilly, they almost immediately lost their skipper and playmaker in chief Mark Fabian to injury. Not 10 minutes in, 12 points down and minus their captain, the writing for ‘Nure was on the wall. With gifted individuals in skipper Andrew Murphy and Patrick Patterson, wearing eight and nine respectively and at the heart of almost everything creative, there is certainly the basis of another cup winning ‘Rock unit. Not for a minute am I suggesting anything foregone but certainly they are made of the right stuff. By the 13th minute they had landed a third try, created and finished by the irrepressible Patterson in a flowing move off the base of the scrum involving powerhouse Murphy and speedy full-back James Moriarty. Terenure battled back and scored on their first incursion deep into ‘Rock territory as replacement out-half Jake Moore nailed a penalty to narrow the gap to 14. But that was as good as it got, as a deft offload by Carl Delaney created the opportunity for Reece Plumtree, O’Reilly and Murphy to set Liam Turner racing in for the fourth try and a 22-3 half-time lead. Terenure gave as good as they got in the third quarter before a sweetly delivered pass from loosehead Alan Francis set the impressive Plumtree racing clear for try number five, with O’Reilly adding the extras. Further tries from Turner and John Gallagher, the first converted by O’Reilly, completed the scoring and with it the warning from the reigning champions that this title is

not going to be given up easily. Newbridge, who had led for the majority of the second half, were left to rue not making their dominance count on the scoreboard as Terenure snatched an unlikely victory. Despite the first half ending scoreless, both sides had plenty of opportunities. Newbridge declined three points on offer and instead kicked for the corner after a quarter of an hour, but a knock-on at the line-out summed up a frustrating afternoon. Terenure fly-half Mark Fabian opted for a penalty attempt shortly before the break, but his kick skewed wide right. Newbridge, however, made a hash of clearing their lines, which almost allowed Keith Sweeney in for a try in the corner, but for a terrific last-ditch tackle by Luke Morris. Terenure should have opened the scoring 10 minutes after the restart, but the referee correctly ruled that the pass to Josh Strahan had been forward. That sparked the Co Kildare school into life again. Cian Murphy was on hand to intercept Callum Ashmore’s loose pass and the winger streaked clear under the posts. Morris added the extras to give his side a 7-0 lead heading into the final quarter.

Fabian reduced the deficit with a penalty after 44 minutes and, then, despite the game being played deep in ‘Nure territory, a break from Strahan allowed replacement Rory McGrath to put La Grue in for the match-winning try. Fabian then held his nerve to kick the conversion. Newbridge College – T Connolly; C Murphy, J Dean, D Murphy, K Kyne; L Morris (B Caufield 58), L Younge (D Ryan 42); N Stapleton, R Wynne (C Timmons 52), D Morrissey; L Heffernan, T Grant (E Morris 31); P O’Brien (L Kelly 59), B Howlett (D Doyle 58), P Ryan (capt). Terenure had the wind in their favour in the first half, but a plethora of errors in the face of some stirring defence prevented them from making any inroads until Mark Fabian made it 3-0 just before the break. Early in the second half, Kilkenny were turned over just 10m from the Terenure line. Kerins picked up possession at the base of the ruck and went on an arcing run, showing remarkable speed to outstrip the first line of defence and race up the right flank for a sensational score. Kilkenny stayed competitive, despite losing a player to the sin bin, and with four minutes left some good forward play off the line-out ended with captain, Josh Miller touching down. TERENURE COLLEGE – C Ashmore; K Sweeney, A Lagrue, J Murphy, J Strachan; M Fabian, M Eaton; J Kerins, J Cadell, Z Vaughan; C Somerville, J O’Hare; P Heneghan, A Melia, C Sherton.
