Try fest for Leinster U19’s with a 91-0 win over Connacht
5 September 2015 18:38 Try fest for Leinster U19 with a 91-0 win over Connacht It is difficult to know what coach Morgan Lennon would have earned from Leinster’s bloodless victory over Connacht in the U19 Inter-provincial Championship at Donnybrook on Saturday afternoon. The Leinster backs started out by hitting the line with ferocity, centre Jordan Larmour making the first bust and full-back Barry Goulding cracking Connacht in the left corner in the third minute. When out-half Luke Carty looked for space in behind Goulding returned the kick with interest. The combination between fly-half Ciaran Frawley and Larmour was accurate. Prop Rory Mulvihill made headway and the ball was shifted left for hooker Tadhg McElroy to plunge over. Almost straight from the restart, centre Michael McDermott scythed through to halfway and Larmour was there to speed home for James McGowan to convert for 17-0 in the 12th minute. It was already looking like a mismatch. This was confirmed by the next thrust, the ball moved smoothly into the hands of right wing Gavin Mullen, whose footwork was too much for Paul Prendergast. McGowan converted in the 17th minute. Number eight Paul Boyle used a solid scrum to tear over for the next one, McGowan’s two points bringing it to 31-0 in the 21st minute. It was already a foregone conclusion. But, Connacht scrum-half Donnchadh Reilly was giving his best to stem the tide. It didn’t last too long. Hooker McElroy took centre McDermott’s pass and fended off three tacklers for his second try for McGowan’s next conversion for 38-0 close to half-time. There was little Connacht could do, or were willing to do, as Frawley faked to pass and shrugged off two feeble tackles for McGowan to continue his shooting practice. Goulding took advantage of a hole to send wing Mc-
Gowan outside the reach of full-back Joe Murphy to hit the half century mark in 43 minutes. Connacht didn’t learn the lesson of leaving their numbers short on their left flank, McGowan sent away by Tim Foley and returning the favour for the replacement to touch down. In a flash, Larmour was freewheeling his way into the same corner for his second try and quickly followed this with his hat-trick for McGowan to add the conversion. Soon, wing Mullen tacked on another and McGowan won a foot race for his second with Foley’s conversion taking it out to 79-0 on the hour. The electric Larmour took off again and McGowan was right there to take his hat-trick. For once, Connacht managed to hold onto the ball and draw breathe, two penalties and a lineout taking them into the 22. They lost control of a maul. The ball was moved at speed and Larmour was on the end of the chain of passes. At Donnybrook - LEINSTER 91 (J Larmour 4 tries; J McGowan 3 tries, 5 cons; T Foley try, 3 cons; T McElroy, G Mullen 2 tries each; B Goulding, P Boyle, C Frawley try each); CONNACHT 0.
Leinster U19 Let Lead Slip Against Munster
13 September 2015 13:02 Coach Morgan Lennon came away with a great deal of regret from this U19 Interprovincial match-up at Cork Institute of Technology grounds on Saturday. Leinster went about building a winning 13-point lead only to let it slip away in the final quarter. Initially, the intent was spot-in with the back three of Barry Goulding, Gavin Mullen and James McGowan countering to good effect and the tempo earning a penalty which McGowan nailed in the eleventh minute. Munster were tending more towards a set-piece centred, pressure game. They did not spend all their time on the back foot, full-back breaking Liam Coombes for a lead try in the 20th minute.
This did not unduly ruffle Leinster and they returned to territorial dominance long enough for Goulding to be the last man on the end of the line for a finish into the right corner to make it 8-5 at the interval. They were not content to sit on this and McGowan cut in from the left flank to score under the posts for his rudimentary conversion to make it 15-5 in the 41st minute. Left wing McGowan was on hand to add three more points two minutes later. It was all looking like one-way traffic until second row Jack Regan was binned in the 50th minute and Leinster had to defend with 14 men. Munster mopped up 14 points in those seven minutes from converted tries by replacement Dylan Reeves Wasik and left wing Glen Dickenson to slip into a one-point lead. The deterioration in the weather conditions impeded Leinster’s handling and desire to strike from distance. Munster were more comfortable to work the ball forward in inches rather than metres and it paid off when centre Peader Collins pinched the killer try, converted by Fitzgerald, in the 67th minute. “It was very disappointing,” reacted Lennon. “We ended up in a situation where we had a strong lead and were probably one more score from winning the game.” “Then, they got momentum from the sin bin and scored 14 points in those seven minutes. “It was very difficult to wrestle the momentum back off of Munster once they had it. They kicked the ball down the field, chased hard and tackled hard and put the pressure on.” MUNSTER U19s 26 LEINSTER U19s 18 At Cork IT - MUNSTER 26 (L Coombes, P Collins, G Dickensen, D Reeves-Wasik try each; C Fitzgerald 3 cons); LEINSTER 18 (J McGowan try, 2 pens, con; B Goulding try)
Leinster U19s Defeat Ulster in Donnybrook 20 September 2015 13:05 Leinster’s defiance in defence and centre Jordan Larmour’s two tries saw them home against a dangerous Ulster in the U19 Interprovincial Championship at Donnybrook on Saturday. Ulster started out aggressively with lock Robin Sinton hammering his opposite number Jack Regan and Leinster’s Gavin Mullen taking out Robert Balacoune before the left wing had received the ball. Fly-half Paul Kerr’s penalty was on target, but short of length. It wasn’t long before number eight Zac Jordan was clean through until arrested by a textbook tackle from fullback Barry Goulding. Leinster’s first joy came from second row Oisin Dowling’s break out of defence and James MacGowan’s penalty from the left for an edge in the fifth minute. Ulster’s Sinton was fortunate to escape nothing more serious than the sanction of a penalty for his illegal contact into Dowling. They made use of the let-off when full-back Andrew McGreggor surged into the 22 and right wing Jonathan Haldane dotted down from a quick recycle to take the lead in the tenth minute. The battle of the breakdown was going Ulster’s way and Leinster flanker Conor Farrell was binned on the advice of a touch judge. The visitors were almost in clover again when centre Callum McLaughlin’s pass-under-pressure could not find the unmarked Balacoune. Leinster get juice out of Dowling’s miss-pass and Mullen’s speed down the right before he was blindsided by Sinton. They were awarded a penalty at the next ruck. MacGowan sliced the posts to recover a 6-5 advantage in the 18th minute, largely against the run of play and chances. It took a groundhog intervention by number eight Paul
Boyle on the floor to stem Ulster. Centre Jordan Larmour’s straight line onto the ball stressed the visitors and MacGowan made it 9-3 form straight in front in the 22nd minute. Ulster wing Jonathan Haldane’s intrusion into the line was decisive, his speculative long pass to Balacoune not sharp enough to get the job done. However, out-half Paul Kerr did hammer out a penalty in the 26th minute. They came again with purpose until Larmour separated full-back McGreggor from the ball. It was Larmour who lit up the afternoon with an individual try right out of the top drawer as he streaked away down the left and beat the last defender with an in-to-out move for MacGowan’s two to make it 16-8 in the 33rd minute. On resumption, MacGowan was not able to land a penalty from distance. Hooker Tadgh McElroy and prop Rory Mulvihill gave go-forward off the shoulder of flyhalf Ciaran Frawley. Ulster number eight Zac Jordan was harshly binned for not releasing McElroy in the tackle. MacGowan’s shot smashed of the outside of the left post. Ulster needed a reaction. They got it when McGreggor flew into space and Balacoune was stopped short by fullback Goulding for the cost of a penalty. They went to the corner. Centre Josh Jordan took the ball up and wing Haldane had the gas to get outside MacGowan for a try which narrowed it to 16-13 in the 45th minute. The slight of hand of Frawley nearly put Larmour into a hole. Ulster’s countered strongly through Josh Jordan as the fluidity of the game was disrupted by mistakes and a plethora of replacements. Ulster’s McGreggor slipped into a tackle by Jack Regan, who saw yellow, and Ulster went for the lineout into maul. It almost worked out, their wing Ryan Wilson spilling the ball in the act of scoring. They wouldn’t go away. The Leinster defence was stretched to breaking point. They needed air and they
got it when Larmour simply moved into fifth gear for the tremendous try, converted by MacGowan. LEINSTER 23 ULSTER 13 At Donnybrook - LEINSTER 23 (J Larmour 2 tries; J MacGowan 3 pens, 2 cons); ULSTER 13 (J Haldane 2 tries; P Kerr pen).
