Exeter Chiefs' Stuart Townsend makes premature return from England duty By Western Morning News | Posted: June 08, 2015
Exeter Chiefs’ Stuart Townsend has had to curtail his trip to Italy to play for England at the World Rugby Under-20 Championship. The Chiefs’ scrum-half was injured playing against Wales in Calvisano at the weekend. Bath’s Will Homer will replace Townsend, who sustained a knee injury in last Saturday’s 30-16 victory, in the England Under-20 squad. The Exeter prospect had scored twice against Japan, and added his third try of the campaign in the weekend win over Wales. England Under-20 head coach Jon Callard said: “It is hugely disappointing for Stuart, who has worked extremely hard over the last ten months to get himself into fantastic shape. • Exeter Chiefs duo on England Under 20s bench for semi-final “He has proved his fitness and his speed of delivery from the breakdown has been exceptional. He was playing very well and I feel for him.” Callard added: “We plan for eventualities like this. Will is experienced, familiar with the squad, and has been training hard with Bath right up until the Premiership final, so we know he is well prepared and ready to take this opportunity. “In addition, James Mitchell has had game time already in both pool games and played well during the Six Nations. He brings a lot of energy and tempo so, along with the rest of the management, I am confident that this change will be seamless for the squad.”

Stuart Townsend and Sam Skinner score tries in England U20 win By Western Morning News | Posted: June 02, 2015
Stuart Townsend of England Under-20s and Exeter Chiefs. England kicked off the defence of their World Rugby Under-20 title with a 59-7 victory over Championship newcomers Japan at the Stadio San Michele in Calvisano, Italy. In a dominant and composed first half England built a strong 45-0 lead with tries from George Perkins, Jack Walker, Tom Howe and two apiece for Aaron Morris and Exeter Chiefs scrum-half Stuart Townsend. Japan were not to be completely undone and following the break kept England under pressure with a passionate and determined performance. England head coach Jon Callard said: “I am pleased with that performance, we came out of the blocks and started really well. We were clinical with the opportunities that presented themselves to us. • Exeter Chiefs' Tomas Francis joins Tom James in Wales' World Cup training squad • Exeter Chiefs youngsters called into England squad • Exeter Chiefs' Sam Skinner called up to England U20 starting line-up "Second half we emptied the bench and Japan found momentum. To their credit, they were very good and stretched us on the edge with their attacking play. We are through the first game and will be all the better for the experience of dealing with the heat and conditions out here.” England opened the scoring within the first minute through Perkins which Rory Jennings converted. A second was added minutes later when hooker Jack Walker charged over in the corner, again Jennings was on target. STownsend darted over from the back of England’s driving maul before full-back Morris got in on the action to score England’s fourth try and secure the all-important bonus point. Jennings’ conversion put England 26-0 ahead within 15 minutes. A second soon followed for Morris as he raced onto the offload from Nick Tompkins. Just before the half hour mark Japan began building some phases with periods of attack in England’s half but strong work at the breakdown by Paul Hill caused Japan to be penalised for not releasing. Townsend took the penalty quickly, sprinting down field to claim his second in an all round authoritative performance. Tom Howe, making his first England start, added one more just before half time, again created by Tompkins – this time a perfectly weighted grubber. Replacement Sam Skinner, of Exeter Chiefs, got the score board ticking within minutes of the second half. It looked like Japan had responded when Tevita Tatafu drove over the line, much to the delight of the crowd however it was disallowed for obstruction. Buoyed by their efforts, Japan remained on the offensive and were eventually rewarded with a penalty try when Max Clark saw yellow for a deliberate knock on. Ryuji Noguchi converted to claim the full seven points with 20 minutes left to play. Momentum remained with Japan until the final ten minutes when England pushed for a final score and it was debutant Will Witty who went over. A third Exeter Chiefs player also saw action as, like Skinner, Jack Innard came on as a replacement at half time.
