Defending champions Roscrea see off Clongowes to reach Leinster senior final
Alan Tynan was the star man as Cistercian College won today’s semi-final. Mar 1st 2016, Cistercian College Roscrea 24 Clongowes Wood College 18 ROSCREA COLLEGE BOOKED their place in the Leinster senior schools cup final with a dramatic six-point victory over Clongowes Wood College.
The Kildare side had the better of the possession in the opening stages after the restart, though found the Roscrea defence hard to break down. Cistercian executed an impressive turn over on 45 minutes with Clongowes just a metre short of the line. And the defending champions came right back into the game after a brilliant sprinting surge from hooker Eoghan Maher saw him make 30 metres.
One of the favourites for the Leinster Schools Cup put out a strong statement today
Roscrea players celebrate at the final whistle today in Donnybrook.
Brian Diffley’s try 10 minutes from the end means the defending champions can look to claim their second Leinster senior schools cup title on 13 March. Clongowes opened the scoring after four minutes, Benjamin O’Shea slotting over a penalty after Roscrea’s Alan Tynan was penalised for not releasing following Clongowes pressure. The Kildare men had the better of the opening period, where defences won out, with Clongowes defensive line holding strong to keep out Roscrea’s first real territory gain. Within sixty seconds Clongowes had turned defence into attack. An intelligent hidden lay off by David Jeffares, allowing Daniel Sheehan to move into space. While Roscrea held up the first attacks on their line, full back Michael Silvester found the gap to land the game’s opening try. Benjamin O’Shea converted to give Clongowes a 10-0 lead in the 20th minute The try triggered the Roscrea forwards into action and resulted in a prolonged spell of pressure which saw Clongowes holding out for five minutes with last ditch tackles. Tighthead prop Dylan Murphy finally broke the Clongowes resistance, the Offaly men pressing hard in the maul from their lineout and deservedly touching down. Benjamin O’Shea added three points to Clongowes leads two minutes before the break with a calm penalty to leave Clongowes leading 13-5 at the interval.
Fly-half Tynan was a very cool customer in the Roscrea midfield, especially as his side trailed for the majority of the game. Tynan’s kicks to touch are a formidable weapon in Roscrea’s armour, while his super tackle on Benajmin O’Shea in the second half, prevented what would have been a key Clongowes try. Then Clongowes seized the first piece of space behind Roscrea’s rearguard with Alan Tynan’s covering tackle on Michael Silvester saving Roscrea. However Clongowes spread the ball quickly with Fiachra Lynch’s fast feet enabling him to bounce off a tackle to land a strong right handed try and place his team ahead, 18-12. Fiachra Lynch touches down for a try for Clongowes College. Five minutes later, Roscrea were right back in contention with Michael Milne crashing over after Roscrea had kept the ball in the forwards from their lineout. There was just the minimum between the teams and then the defending champions took the lead for the first time 10 minutes from the end. A clearly rattled Clongowes were placed on the back foot following Alan Tynan’s inch perfect kick into the corner. Roscrea’s pressure in the maul paid off as Brian Diffley landed the try with Kelly’s conversion giving Roscrea a 24 – 18 point lead. There was one final attempt at the try line from Clongowes, but the defending champions held firm to secure a passage to the final for a shot at their second Leinster Senior schools title. Miles O’Connor scored early in the second half as Clongowes took control. King’s Hospital 8-33 Clongowes Wood College CLONGOWES HAVE SECURED a place in the Leinster Schools Senior Cup quarter-finals after an impressive second-half performance against King’s Hospital. The underdogs entered the field to a huge cheer and looked so pumped for the game that there may have been concerns of them controlling their emotions during the contest. However, any fears were quickly eased and King’s dominated the early stages of the game. Clongowes were barely out of their own half when King’s were awarded the first penalty of the game after several errors by Clongowes. Full-back Paul McCullagh stood up to give them a 3-0 lead. That score sprung Clongowes into action and if it wasn’t for some last-ditch defending in the corner, their response would have been immediate. As the rain started to fall midway through the first-half, kicking became more prevalent, with King’s fly-half Daniel Courtney starting to pull the strings with some clever kicks into the 22.
Patrick Nulty and Clongowes were fired up - but fell behind early on. Source: Gary Carr/INPHO Clongowes, however got the crucial first try of the game as lock Florence McCarthy bundled the ball over the line after nice work from Patrick Nulty. Centre Benjamin O’Shea, who kicked well throughout in tough conditions, converted to give Clongowes a 7-3 lead. The men from Palmerstown didn’t wilt under the pressure and responded with a try of their own. After refusing to go for goal with a tricky penalty, they opted to kick into the corner and after several phases of play, they managed to re-take the lead after Sean Goodburn scored a maul try on the half-hour. The conversion was missed by McCullagh and King’s wouldn’t score again for the rest of the match. The game turned when O’Shea managed to score three penalties in quick succession, with two coming before the break to give Clongowes a 13-8 half-time lead. Paul McCullagh’s penalty was a rare moment of relief for King’s Hospital. Source: Gary Carr/INPHO Clongowes started the second-half just as they finished the first, in the opposition half. A third penalty by O’Shea increased the gap to eight points. The Kildare men were starting to dominate the game and King’s were unable to provide the response needed to get them back in the match. Miles O’Connor scored the second try of the game after a terrific interchange allowed O’Connor to cross the line after a darting run. His strength was too much for the opposition defence. Further tries by Patrick Nulty and winger Brian Maher wrapped up the victory. Brett Igoe, the head coach of Clongowes will be particularly happy with the final try, which demonstrated the
team’s pace and power accompanied by good distributuion for Maher to get the final score of the game. Clongowes progress to the quarter-finals but King’s Hospital can take plenty of positives from a battling first-half display.
