Junior Boks arrive in Tbilisi in high spirits May 27, 2017

Sunday, 4 June: 16h00 – SA v Georgia Thursday, 8 June: 13h30 – SA vs Argentina

Roux praises Junior Bok character to secure draw May 31, 2017

The Junior Springboks arrived in Tbilisi, Georgia, on Friday evening in high spirits ahead of the World Rugby U20 Championship, which kicks off on Wednesday, 31 May. The team departed for the international spectacle from Cape Town on Thursday evening and travelled to Tbilisi via Istanbul. They started their recovery from the long journey immediately on arrival at the hotel with a swim. Junior Springbok backline coach Mzwandile Stick said the energy in the team was fantastic after touching down in Tbilisi as the players soaked up the new scenery from the airport to the hotel. “The energy in the team is amazing and that is exactly what we as coaches want to see with our opening match only a few days away,” said Stick. “This is a massive opportunity for the players, and you could see that they were ready for the challenge when we left SA. The team was in equally high spirits when we arrived in Tbilisi, despite the long journey, and you could see the delight on the players’ faces to be here when we landed. “Obviously recovery is very important now, as our first match is on Wednesday, but the players had a good swim on arrival, and after a good night’s rest we will be able to get on with training.” he squad will follow a similar training routine to that at the last two camps in Stellenbosch from Saturday as they put together the final touches in preparation for the clash against France. “We plan to follow the same training routine as that which we have in the last few weeks from Saturday, so the players can slot back into their normal routine from the outset of the tour,” said Stick. “The fact that the time difference between SA and Georgia is only two hours will also benefit us because it means the players do not have to adjust to a new time zone. “As a team we are very excited about the challenge ahead. We have prepared well, and now it is time to put that hard work into practice on the field.” The SA U20’s will kick off their campaign against France before meeting hosts, Georgia, and Argentina in their remaining pool matches on Sunday, 4 June and Thursday, 8 June respectively. Junior Springbok World Rugby U20 Championship fixtures (SA Times): Wednesday, 31 May: 13h30 – SA v France

Junior Springboks coach Chean Roux praised his team’s tremendous character to secure a 23-23 draw against France with a converted try in the dying seconds of their opening World Rugby U20 Championship match at the Avchala Stadium in Tbilisi, Georgia on Wednesday. A try in the final minute by Junior Springbok No 8 Juarno Augustus and a successful conversion by flyhalf Curwin Bosch saw the teams finish the clash tied at 23-23. “It was nerve-wrecking, but I had confidence that we could score in the end,” said Roux. “I knew that if we get ball possession late in the second half we would convert it into points, just as we did in the first half, because we had very little possession in the second half. “The players showed tremendous character and that is fantastic in a World Championship.” Roux singled out the team’s conditioning as one of the main positives in the match and said they would address the areas of their game that needed to improve in the next few days. “The positives were that similarly to some of the warm-up games, we ended on a high note, so I think our superior conditioning pulled us through in the end,” said Roux. “There will always be negatives if one doesn’t win a match. But I will have a look at the video to see what the negatives are and we will work on that.” Augustus opened up the scoring in the second minute with a pick-and-go and the successful conversion and a subsequent penalty goal by Bosch pushed the team 10-0 up on the scoreboard. French fullback Romain Buros closed the gap to five points with a charge-down try in the eighth minute. Roux’s team was dealt a double blow soon after as winger Wandisile Simelane was sin-binned for tripping, and nine minutes later prop Gerhard Steenekamp also received a yellow card for infringing at a breakdown, which forced the team to play with 13 men. The opposition capitalised on this as hooker Florian Dufour crossed the chalk in the 28th minute to push his team into a 12-10 lead. The SA U20’s, however, sustained the pressure applied by France well for the rest of the half and managed to maintain the two-point deficit going into the break.

France struck first in the second half with a try by Baptiste Couilloud, while flyhalf Romain Ntamack slotted over back-toback drop goals, while Bosch slotted over two penalty goals for South Africa to trail 23-16 early in the fourth quarter. The Junior Boks continued to fight until the final minute as they retained possession and applied pressure. A yellow card for France at the death, however, saw them opt for a lineout and this patience paid off with a try for Augustus, which Bosch converted for the draw. Scorers: Junior Springboks 23 (10) – Tries: Juarno Augustus (2). Conversions: Curwin Bosch (2). Penalty Goals: Bosch (3). France 23 (12) – Tries: Romain Buros, Florian Dufour, Baptiste Couilloud. Conversion: Romain Ntamack. Drop Goals: Romain Ntamack (2).

Roux pleased as Junior Boks outplay Georgia June 04, 2017

Junior Springbok coach Chean Roux lauded his team for powering their way to a 38-14 bonus-point victory against Georgia – with Manie Libbok and Wandisile Simelane each crossing for two tries – in their second pool match at the World Rugby Umder-20 Championship at the Avchala Stadium in Tbilisi on Sunday. The SA U20’s overcame a tightly-fought first quarter against the tournament hosts in front of a hostile crowd and managed to outscore them three tries to one in the first half. They built on this with a solid second-half showing, in which they added three tries to take their total for the match to six. “Our goal was to secure the win with a bonus point, so I am definitely pleased.” said Roux. “It was tough out there with the heat and the passionate crowd. The Georgians played well in the beginning and made it tough for us at times as they tried to slow down the game while we tried to speed it up, but we will take the bonus point win and move onto the next match against Argentina.” Zooming in on the game, Roux said: “We scored a few fantastic tries. We have a very talented backline that can score tries from anywhere on the field. “The character the team showed on defence to shut out Georgia

after several phases at times during the match was also outstanding. This is a special group of players, and we can build on this performance going into the match against Argentina.” Junior Springboks No 8 Juarno Augustus crossed the chalk for the team’s first try from a pick-and-go in the 16th minute, which fullback Jeanluc Cilliers converted to hand the team a 7-0 lead. Georgia fought back strongly and managed to get close to the South African’s tryline on a few occasions after camping there for several minutes, and their efforts paid off with a converted try by prop Ushangi Tcheishvili to level the scores. The Junior Boks, however, hit their straps minutes later, and the points followed as centre Simelane danced his way through the defence, while flyhalf Libbok touched down for the team’s third try four minutes before the halftime hooter thanks to an innovative chip-and-chase. The SA U20’s built on this with more attractive attacking rugby in the second half, which saw winger Yaw Penxe cross the tryline after a strong run. Simelane followed as he scored the team’s fifth try in a fine showing of fantastic inter-passing and support play to power their way to 31-7 lead. Georgia struck back with a try by replacement back Giorgi Gogoladze, who touched down from a grubber kick, which they successfully converted to take their score to 14 points, but this was soon cancelled out by Libbok who gathered a stunning pass by centre Damian Willemse. A yellow card for SA U20 replacement flanker Hendre Stassen in the dying minutes reduced the team to 14 men, and minutes later Zain Davids was red-carded, while the Georgians also received a yellow card. But despite sustained pressure by the hosts on the tryline, they were unable to add to their score and had to settle for the 38-14 defeat. Scorers: Junior Springboks 38 (19) – Tries: Juarno Augustus, Wandisile Simelane (2), Manie Libbok (2), Yaw Penxe. Conversions: Jeanluc Cilliers (2), Curwin Bosch (2). Georgia 14 (7) – Tries: Ushangi Tcheishvili, Giorgi Gogoladze. Conversions: Gela Aprasidze (2).

Junior Boks into World Rugby U20 Champs semis

June 08, 2017 Junior Springbok coach Chean Roux remained humble on Thursday as his team romped to an 11-try 72-14 bonus-point victory against Argentina in their final pool match at the World Rugby U20 Championship at the Avchala Stadium in Tbilisi to book a semi-final berth. The SA U20’s produced a solid all-round performance to outplay

Argentina, with hooker Johan Grobbelaar and winger Gianni Lombard each crossing the tryline twice. “We treated this match as a quarter-final and the players responded very well,” said Roux. “All credit must go to them. I think they delivered a fantastic performance. But we have achieved nothing yet. We have already started with the planning for the next game, with the opposition depending on what happens between Australia and England.” Asked if the victory gave the team confidence with the semi-final in mind, Roux said: “I think so. The players have worked hard. But this means nothing if we do not win the next match.” Grobbelaar opened up the scoring with two tries in four minutes, first from a rolling maul and then a stolen lineout, to push the side 12-0 ahead in the opening 10 minutes. Argentina struck back with a try from a pick-and-go minutes later, and this was followed by Junior Bok centre Wandisile Simelane receiving a yellow card for tripping a player. This, however, did not affect the Junior Boks’ rhythm as winger Gianni Lombard received a smart pass from centre Damian Willemse to score the team’s third try, while back-to-back tries by Willemse and winger Yaw Penxe shortly before the break compliments of good handling skills and innovative play, saw the team inflate their score to 31 points. Argentina were only able to add one try in the second quarter by winger and captain Tomas Malanos, who took advantage of an overlap out wide, which saw them trail 31-14 at the break. “Los Pumitas” were dealt a blow in the opening seconds of the second half with Franco Molina being sin-binned, and the SA U20’s capitalised on this with No 8 Juarno Augustus crossing the tryline. Roux’s team continued to run riot as Bosch added a penalty goal, while Lombard, Embrose Papier, Manie Libbok, and replacement backs Francois de Villiers and Jeanluc Cilliers added further tries in a rewarding second half to finish the match with an impressive 11 tries and a memorable 72-14 victory. Scorers: Junior Springboks 72 (31) – Tries: Johan Grobbelaar (2) Gianni Lombard (2), Damian Willemse, Yaw Penxe, Juarno Augustus, Embrose Papier, Manie Libbok, Francois de Villiers, Jeanluc Cilliers. Conversions: Curwin Bosch (7). Penalty Goal: Bosch. Argentina 14 (14) – Tries: Felix Luna, Tomas Malanos. Conversions: Tomas

Junior Boks go down fighting against England

June 13, 2017 Junior Springboks coach Chean Roux was disappointed as his team went down 24-22 in the World Rugby U20 Championship

semi-final against England at the M.Meskhi Stadium in Tbilisi, Georgia, but he said the players deserved credit for fighting until the end. The SA U20’s trailed 17-12 at the break as England scored two converted tries and a penalty goal, while the Junior Boks’ managed two tries by No 8 Juarno Augustus and one conversion by flyhalf Curwin Bosch. Roux’s team fought back strongly in the second half with a converted try and penalty goal to take a 22-17 lead. But a converted try by England in the dying minutes pushed them 24-22 ahead, which they hung onto until the final whistle. “I thought the players showed tremendous character out there and fought right until the end. And in the end of it all we were only two points short of advancing to the final,” said Roux. “That said, I think a great foundation has been laid. This is a fantastic bunch of players and they are very talented. We have another game left, and it would be good if we can finish on a high and secure third place.” England struck first in the tightly-fought first half with captain and No 8 Zach Mercer touching down in the third minute after receiving a pass in space following a series of pick-and-go’s. But the SA U20’s struck back minutes later with Augustus touching down thanks to good inter-passing and support play, which Bosch converted to level the scores at 7-7. England, however, stretched their score to 17 points compliments of a converted try by scrumhalf Alex Mitchell and a penalty goal by Max Malins. The Junior Boks reduced the deficit to 17-12 on the stroke of halftime as Augustus forced his way over the tryline from a pickand-go. They backed this up with another try early in the second half thanks to a well-timed dive into the traffic at a ruck under the posts by lock Ruben van Heerden to take a 19-17 lead. Bosch added a penalty goal with eight minutes left on the clock to extend the team’s lead to 22-17, but this was cancelled out by Mercer’s second try under the uprights, which Malins converted for a 24-22 lead. Bosch tried to force the Junior Boks back into the lead with a drop-goal soon after, but his attempt was unsuccessful, which allowed England to secure the victory. Scorers: Junior Springboks 22 (12) – Tries: Juarno Augustus (2), Ruben van Heerden. Conversions: Curwin Bosch (2). Penalty Goal: Curwin Bosch. England 24 (17) - Tries: Zach Mercer (2), Alex Mitchell. Conversions: Max Malins (3). Penalty Goal: Max Malins.

Junior Boks’ fighting spirit earns them bronze

June 18, 2017 The Junior Boks overcame a tight first half in which they trailed 8-7, to deliver a strong second-half showing in which they crossed the tryline four times, with hooker Johan Grobbelaar touching down twice, to outplay their opponents. They backed this up with a solid defensive effort in which they limited France to a consolation try in the dying minutes from a quick tap to take their try tally to two for the match, and to secure the convincing victory. “The players showed great character to come out in the second half the way they did in what marked their fifth match in the tournament,” said Roux. “We didn’t play perfect rugby, but we stuck to our structures and one or two things we worked on before this match gave us momentum. “All the credit must go to the players, they played very well. This is a special group of players.” With the team having putting in the hard yards to prepare for the tournament since March, Roux said the victory was well deserved. “It is going to sad to get on the plane and say our goodbyes when we return home,” said Roux. “But the players really deserve this win for all the hard work they put in over the last few months.” France came out firing and applied pressure on the Junior Boks from the outset as they retained possession and put together phases, while they gained yards on attack with their smart off-loads. But the SA U20’s absorbed the pressure well and managed to shut them out on defence. The Junior Boks struck first with lock Ruben van Heerden scoring a try against the posts in the 15th minute from a pickand-go, which Manie Libbok converted to hand Roux’s team a 7-0 lead. France hit back with a try by hooker Peato Mauvaka from a

rolling maul, and flyhalf Baptiste Couilloud slotted over a penalty goal six minutes before halftime to force their way into an 8-7 lead, which they held onto going into the break. The Junior Boks reclaimed the lead shortly after the break as hooker Johan Grobbelaar received the ball in space and dashed to the tryline, with Libbok’s conversion and a subsequent penalty goal pushing them 17-8 ahead. They built on this with a stunning intercept try by replacement centre David Brits, which was followed by tries by Grobbelaar and No 8 Juarno Augustus, while another penalty goal by Libbok in between inflated their lead to 37-8. France forced their way over the tryline with three minutes left compliments of Couilloud, but this was too little too late and they had to settle for the 37-15 defeat. Scorers: Junior Springboks 37 (7) – Tries: Ruben van Heerden, Johan Grobbelaar (2), David Brits, Juarno Augustus. Conversions: Manie Libbok (3). Penalty Goals: Manie Libbok (2). France 15 (8) – Tries: Peato Mauvaka, Baptiste Couilloud. Conversion: Baptiste Couilloud. Penalty Goal: Baptiste Couilloud.
