Patricia Alvarez’s hat trick saw Spain claim fifth spot from the girls EuroHockey Youth Championships with hosts Ireland forced to settle for sixth in the competition at Garryduff. Spain took the lead in the 13th minute when Florencia Amundson slammed home with sheer power with her fourth goal of the campaign. Ireland produced a fine response with Michelle Carey and Freya McDermott pushing them forward from midfield while Niamh Carey’s driving run ended with a smart Paula Ruiz save. Spain, though, were more incisive. Alvarez hit the post from one chance before Lucia Abajo Saenz de Tejada got a deft deflection to a crash ball for the second goal. Alvarez extended the lead further in the second half with an excellent attack through the middle, picking out the bottom corner across the goalkeeper’s bows. Alejandra Conill hit the post for Spain for a second time moments later but Ireland never stopped battling and got their reward when Rosie Henderson flipped a pass through to Michelle Carey. She was 40 metres out from goal when she picked up the ball but the defence back-pedalled and she took fullt advantage, hitting a crisp strike through Ruiz. Spain replied immediately, however, with Alvarez nabbing her second. Chances came and went at each end and Alvarez finished out the tournament with her third goal and Alejandra Conill got another at the end. The win meant they finish the tournament in fifth place with Ireland sixth.

Score 0–1
Ireland 1 (E Curran) Poland 0 Ellen Curran’s 12th minute sliding goal was enough to earn Ireland their second win of the Girls EuroHockey Youth Championships, giving them their second win of the campaign. It means they have six points in Pool C with a potential win over Spain on Saturday giving them fifth place from the tournament. Curran had missed the last game of the initial group stages through injury but she returned in some style, pouncing at the right post after Rachel Burns picked her out from the left of the circle. It was a lead they would never relinquish in an end-toend battle in which both sides threw everything forward but were unable to find the final outcomes. Michelle Carey’s excellent runs from midfield at pace caused lots of danger while Jessica McMaster was a real star with her stickwork and pace, too. Poland, meanwhile, forced a series of corners but found Emma Buckley in strong form between the posts. McMaster went within inches of winning the tie with six minutes to go but Klaudia Glowacka scrambled across to prevent the danger. Poland’s attempts to draw level, though, petered out in the last few minutes when a pair of yellow cards limited their chances and Ireland had their second win.
26th July 2016: Ireland’s girls come back from a 2-0 deficit to beat a well organised Russian team 2-3 and blow Pool B wide open! Russia 2 (V.Borisova 2) Ireland 3 (H.Irwin, J.McMaster, M.Barry) Russia dominated the first half of this game and went ahead via V.Borisova, just into the second half she doubled the score from a nicely executed corner in the 37th minute. Ireland’s 12, Jessica Mc Master worked hard pressing for corners which were being wasted as they ripped past the post, but in the 51st minute Ireland brought on Ellen Curran who immediate had an impact on the play and played a beautiful pass to Hannah Irwin who sent it home. In the 65th minute Mc Master got her reward for her huge effort as she equalised.
In the 70th minute Michelle Barry put Ireland ahead to clinch the win. Irish Coach Stephen Arbuthnot said “We had a lot of things to fix after the first game, we didn’t start well at all, we had an honest meeting and were disappointed in ourselves.” He said of the match today that they “needed a big response which didn’t come in the first half, it had to come in the second half, but to be honest we never felt we would lose that game, even at 2-0 down.” He was frustrated at the number of corners awarded that were not converted as the scoreline could have been greater!
