Belgium And Germany Boys Make Early Impact In Pool A As Spain Top Pool B

Irish coach Gareth Borland said of his team’s performance: “We gave them a good battle in the first half and were well in the game but gave them too many soft short corners. “We are happy with this as a start point, happy with the boys and their attitude, working right the way until the end of the game.” Team Minute Shirt # Player Action Score Germany 13 9 BOCK Fedor Penalty Corner 1–0 Germany 25 27 SCHIFFER Jan Penalty Corner 2–0 Germany 45 25 KNOBLING Eric Field Goal 3–0 Germany 60 27 SCHIFFER Jan Penalty Corner 4–0 Germany 63 14 HINRICHS Teo Field Goal 5–0

Germany on the attack against Ireland. 24th July 2016: Day 1 of the U18 EuroHockey Championship got underway at 2 venues in Cork, with all the teams in action. U18 Boys EuroHockey Championships, Pool A Germany 5 (J Schiffer 2, F Bock, E Knobling, T Henrichs) Ireland 0 Germany’s corner proficiency under-pinned their excellent start to the campaign, scoring from three set-pieces to see off home hosts Ireland. They did not have it all their own way, though, as Matthew Nelson almost nicked in for an early goal, through one-onone with Alexander Stadler but the goalkeeper stood tall from the first major chance. The Germans were moving the ball well, however, using their platform to launch overlaps down the two sidelines to create chances. They went ahead from their second corner in the 13th minute, Fedor Bock flicking in from a switch move. Despite Raphael Hartkopf ’s yellow card, Germany extended their lead when Jan Schiffer went direct from another corner, 2-0 at half-time. Eric Knobling finished off an excellent right wing move for the third 10 minutes into the second half when Linus Muller wriggled free and his pass was met perfectly by the attacker. Schiffer flicked in an unorthodox personal second to make it 4-0 from the sixth German corner. Teo Henrichs then completed the scoring with a brilliant lobbed finish from the right baseline, finding the tightest possible angle.

Belgium 3 (Freyling, Devis, Gougnard) Ireland 1(Sarratt) Belgium have booked their semi final spot of the U18 Eurohockey Championships with a 3-1 victory over Ireland, though the scoreline in no way reflects how closely matched these two sides were for the opening 60 minutes of this action packed game. There was rarely a dull moment in front of a packed crowd in Garryduff, with vocal Irish and Belgium fans cheering on their sides. Kyle Marshall was the engine room of the Irish side and distributed the ball up the pitch at will. But Belgium had an equal to Marshall in the form of Loic Sidler who created opportunities from thin air as he glided through the centre of the field. The sides exchanged penalty corner goals in the first half, Ireland’s coming from Guy Sarratt once again to add to his hat trick from yesterday’s match against Czech Republic. Belgium to the lead for the first time thanks to a tap in at the back post that caught the Irish defence unawares in the 59th minute. Ireland pulled keeper Luke Roleston, who made several fine saves, in the 64th minute but were quickly caught in a 2v1 situation that left the kicking-back with no chance and Boris Gougnard made it 3-1. A super performance from both sides with very little in it for the vast majority of the game; Ireland now move into Pool C and face Spain at 12pm on Friday. Ireland – Spain 0-5 (0-4) Spain produced a brilliant first half performance to assure their place in the top tier of the EuroHockey Youth Championships with a 5-0 win over hosts Ireland. The majority of the damage was done in the first half hour with four Spanish goals before the second half proved a fractious affair with lots of cards being shown. Ireland had the first major chance, though, Rafael Alvarez Reville making an incredible diving save from Andrew O’Hare’s close range touch. Within 30 seconds, Spain had their first goal, Alejandro Alvarez shooting a high reverse into the roof of the net. Enrique Zorita fired in a low drag-flick soon after before Alvaro Tello made it 3-0 in the 17thminute when he finished off Cesar Curiel’s cross. Sam Cortes added another corner goal for the fourth on the half hour for an imposing advantage which Ireland never really looked like reducing. Five players had been sin-binned in the first half and the trend for cards followed in the second half with Spain receiving a red card while three Irish players took yellows, reducing them to eight for a time. Zorita scored his second from a powerful drag-flick with seven minutes to complete the result. It means Spain are safe with one game to go against the Czech Republic while Ireland and Italy meet on Saturday with the winner retaining their place in the top tier. Ireland 2 (M Crookshanks, M Nelson) Italy 2 (M Malucchi, F Rubin) Matthew Nelson showed nerves of steel to sweep home a crucial equaliser for Ireland, one that keeps them in the top tier of the Under-18 EuroHockey Youth Championships for the next edition. It means Italy are relegated in devastating fashion, the goal coming with just seven minutes left on the clock in what was a must-win game for Gianluca Cirilli’s team. Nelson had also created the first goal for Ireland, setting up Matthew Crookshanks with a neat spin and pass which was slapped home first time. Italy replied instantly with Matthias Malucchi scoring from the penalty spot less than a minute after this side went behind. And they continued to take the game to Ireland in the second half, taking the lead from a penalty corner, Filippo Rubin picking out the top of the goal with a powerful effort. It put the hosts under huge pressure but they kept plugging away and when Nelson was found on his own on the right of the circle, he calmly picked his spot and swept home for 2-2. Italy had their moments in the closing phases but Ireland clung on for the all-important result.
