CBC MONKSTOWN WIN VINNIE MURRAY CUP March 10, 2017 / 11:29 am / Site Editor

Captain Eoghan Clarke drove CBC Monkstown to capture the Bank of Ireland Leinster Schools Vinnie Murray Senior Cup at Donnybrook on Thursday. There was a hectic opening to this one as Kilkenny drove forward powerfully before out-half Josh Miller exploited a narrow gap to get in behind. The ball was re-used quickly enough for left wing Lukeman Onilenla to fizz to the left corner in the third minute. The ease of access angered CBC and they hammered into the tackle to survive successive drives from number eight Reuben Pim and prop Owen Edgehill.

It took the kicking game of full-back James Reynolds and a penalty winning poach by lock Robert Ivers to give CBC room to move. The sniper’s instinct of wing Luke Sweeney worked a treat when he stepped up to intercept for a try which Reynolds converted for 7-5 in the ninth minute. The pace showed no signs of dropping as both schools found it easier to create than finish.

Then, Miller spotted space and delivered an inch-perfect kick to Tamilore Awonusi for the right wing to skin the cover in the 26th minute.

Replacements: Luke Hallam for Theunissen 60 mins; Conor Byrne for Read 62 mins; Harry Shaw for Newman 67 mins.

The give-and-take nature of the match continued with Reynolds squaring it from a penalty when Kilkenny crossed the offside line. Clarke was making ground on the ball, while Kilkenny were making turnovers work for them. CBC’s nine Shane O’Hanrahan was binned for a high challenge, which could have been interpreted as a penalty try, for Miller to kick Kilkenny 13-10 ahead at the break. They looked on the verge of extending their advantage when Sweeney stepped into his second interception to go the length of the pitch.

Reynolds guided the conversion in from the right for 17-13 in the 39th minute. Kilkenny did not show the same bounce-back when they went behind. That man Sweeney short through a hole in the middle for his hat-trick for Reynolds two to make it 24-13 in the 48th minute. Kilkenny looked to have blown their opportunity when driven back from the brink of a breakthrough. They reorganised for number eight Reuben Pim to blast a path to the line and Miller to convert in the 54th minute. CBC wing Conor Newman was sure he had sealed the game until his try was cruelly called back for a forward pass – a correct decision. This prompted Miller to sweep downfield on a one-man crusade without the support to make it count as CBC closed it out. CBC Monkstown 24 Kilkenny College 20 At Donnybrook – CBC MONKSTOWN 24 (L Sweeney 3 tries; J Reynolds pen, 3 cons); KILKENNY COLLEGE 20 (T Awonusi, L Onilenla, R Pim try each; J Miller pen, con). CBC: James Reynolds; Conor Newman, Cameron Watson, Darragh Forster, Luke Sweeney; Sean Power, Shane O’Hanrahan; Max Read, Mark Theunissen, Callum Kavanagh, Robert Ivers, Eoin Vaughan, Robert Doyle, Zach Sattar, Eoghan Clarke (capt).

CBC Monkstown put this Bank of Ireland Leinster Schools Vinnie Murray Cup semi-final to bed early at Donnybrook on Thursday. They showed why they will be such a tall order for Kilkenny when the schools meet in the final after their involvements in the Senior Cup have run their course. CBC were utterly dominant in the first-half display, striking as early as the third minute when wing Conor Newman cleared a path to the line for full-back James Reynolds to convert. The missed tackles began to take a toll and a deft kick by flyhalf Sean Power was not dealt with adequately. Amid the confusion, centre Darragh Forster was quickest to react for the second seven points. It wasn’t long before the third seven was punched in by Forster in the 25th minute. Reynolds was on target from the placed balls concluding the half with twelve points from the three conversions and two penalties for 27-nil at the break. They didn’t hold back as wing Luke Sweeney steamed away for a fine try in the 38th minute for Reynolds to convert. The likes of Wesley captain Campbell Classon and number eight David Moran never stopped working in a lost cause. Wes’ had enough about them to generate enough front ball for

replacement Fergus Noonan to find the line for out-half Bill Corrigan to convert in the 49th minute. It was that flyer Sweeney who clocked up his second from distance in the 59th minute. Wesley did have the final say when Moran claimed a try from short yardage. Monkstown move into the Leinster Senior Cup where they will tangle with Cistercian College Roscrea at Castle Avenue next Friday. CBC MONKSTOWN 39 WESLEY COLLEGE 12 At Donnybrook – CBC MONKSTOWN 39 (L Sweeney, D Forster 2 tries each; C Newman try; J Reynolds 2 pens, 4 cons); WESLEY COLLEGE 12 (F Noonan, D Moran try each; B Corrigan con) CBC: James Reynolds; Conor Newman, Cameron Watson, Darragh Forster, Luke Sweeney; Sean Power, Shane O’Hanrahan; Max Read, Mark Theunissen, Callum Kavanagh, Robert Ivers, Eoin Vaughan, Robert Doyle, Zach Sattar, Eoghan Clarke (capt). MONKSTOWN NARROWLY DEFEAT ST GERARD’S January 25, 2016 Captain fantastic Robert Jordan struck a 68th minute penalty to put CBC Monkstown through to the Bank of Ireland Leinster Schools Senior Cup quarter-final at Donnybrook on Monday. Captain fantastic Robert Jordan struck a 68th minute penalty to put CBC Monkstown through to the Bank of Ireland Leinster Schools Senior Cup quarter-final at Donnybrook on Monday. The initial exchanges were frothy with mistakes and misadventure as the two schools got straight down to business at breakneck speed and intensity. Scrum-half Jordan was a cool head. He broke right and then

chipped and chased in two separate attacks to set up a great position. There was a smooth lineout and surging maul that travelled to the line with William Fay in the van for the opening try in the seventh minute. In response, St Gerard’s nine Cormac Foley blazed away for thirty metres. Lock Chris Symonds was at his shoulder in support to cause a penalty offence from which fly-half Tom Foley exacted a toll of three points. The Wicklow school was growing into the game before flanker Ethan Baxter was binned for the added punishment of a penalty. Despite Jack McAteer’s take at the lineout, CBC could not escape the clutches of the St Gerard’s maul defence. Monkstown were inclined to let their larger forwards, like prop Eoghan Clarke, truck it up in what was a sensible option. It tempted an infringement at a ruck. Jordan was just off target from 38 metres. The Monkstown maul was a real weapon and Jordan’s slick grubber forced another lineout.

Prop Callum Kavanagh came closest to a second try when the ball was ripped away in the tackle. St Gerard’s were finding it difficult to exit their half. But, they were restored to their full complement without leaking any points. Their number eight Billy O’Reilly found the front-foot, spinning away from a defender, and it took a smart decision from wing Patrick Rogers to prevent full-back Ben Kealy from doing damage down the left. CBC almost created a thing of beauty when wing Rogers popped up in midfield and was inches away from sending fullback Darragh Porter to the corner, leaving them to stew over a two-point (5-3) lead. They went back on the attack for two wide passes to put Tom O’Callaghan in between defenders. He just couldn’t get the ball away to wing Tom Kelly. A neat lineout move put Fay through into a hole and the number eight’s bulk as too much for the thin cover to cope

with and Jordan converted from the left for 12-3 in the 39th minute. Thre looked to be nothing on when St Gerard’s centre Marc Baker shot into space. Their flanker Connor O’Farrell was rocked in the tackle by lock McAteer. There could have been instant compensation from a shot at goal. Tom Foley pushed it left. He quickly made amends with a superb gliding finish to narrow the difference to 12-8 in the 46th minute. The reaction from CBC was impressive, out-half Shane O’Hanrahan’s educated left foot putting them into the right area where Kealy handled the pressure well as last man back. The weight of pressure started to tell. St Gerard’s second row Chris Symonds was binned. But, Jordan slipped his penalty left and wide in what was a let-off. They just kept the foot down by not overplaying in their own half. Then, the concession of two quick penalties handed St Gerard’s an entry point. Centre Baker beat the first man up. But, their accuracy failed them on the next phase. Kealy turned pennies to pounds by losing his feet, then recovering them to outwit the CBC chasers. It was all there for the taking. It just depended on which side could execute better. St Gerard’s had their lineout sacked and miscued a backline move as CBC came up hard in defence. The dangerous Baker looked their best bet and right wing Matthew Dalton was whipped down inside the 22. They stayed on message. Their next lineout was nicely worked and scrum-half Foley’s long pass was taken back against the grain by Baker for a superb try for 13-12 in the 68th minute. It wasn’t over as CBC centre O’Callaghan burst from deep and Fay straightened the attack. A penalty came their way and Jordan put his earlier misses behind him to strike from 30 metres. At Donnybrook – CBC MONKSTOWN 15 (W Fay 2 tries; R Jordan pen, con); ST GERARD’S SCHOOL 13 (T Foley try, pen; M Baker try). Monkstown: Darragh Porter; Patrick Rogers, Tom O’Callaghan, Darragh Foster, Tom Kelly; Shane O’Hanrahan, Robert Jordan (capt); Callum Kavanagh, Alex Holmes Eoghan Clarke, Jack McAteer, Alec Byrne, Kenzi Kouadri, Zach Sattar, William Fay. Replacements: Dylan O’Regan for Kavanagh 47 mins; Geoffrey Mahon for Kelly 68 mins.
