NETHERLANDS 2 (D. DE HAAN, D.DEKKER) ENGLAND 2 (E.WAY, E.KIMBER) Netherlands were the better team in the opening half taking a early lead via D de Haan. England pushed them hard and earned a corner, which was struck home by E.Way. England then went ahead again via E.Kimber, a stunning reverse slap that the keeper had no chance of getting to. A very determined Dutch team came out following the break and pushed England hard with chances going wide and hitting the bar it had all the hallmarks of a game that could slip away from them, but they pressed hard and earned a corner which D.Dekker. The last 10 minutes saw pressure being applied by both teams, but 2-2 stood at the final whistle. England’s coach Jody Paul said that he felt his team started poorly but then sorted it out and played really well in the second half “We were full value and should have gotten one more goal. Our chat at half time was keeping positive and we played much better in the second half. The Dutch pressed us hard.” He admitted that England had too many turnovers and that’s not something that you can do against a side like The Netherlands. Overall the Dutch could have won and whilst he wasn’t overly pleased with the draw he was happy with the improved performance of his young team. Both teams had chances but it took another PC to change the scoreline, this time E.Gilmour also via a direct flick brought the scoreline to 1-1, and that’s how the game remained at the half time. England pilled on the pressure in the early stages of the
second half and were rewarded as J.Oates scored and England led for just 2 minutes when A.Alvarez levelled the score again. England had the better of the possession and E.Gilmour was once again on target with another flick which was on target. Both teams had chances towards the end of the game, but the English defence stayed strong and a corner in the 53rd minute sealed the victory for England. den Broucke made four saves to deny England and claim European bronze. It came after a cracking encounter between two side full of pace, trickery and power with little quarter asked for or given. England took the lead from a tenth minute penalty corner when Euan Gilmour grabbed a smartly taken rebound from close range. But this was never going to be an easy ride for either team. Soon after, Boris Gougnard tested Rory McCallum’s reflexes and Belgium won a corner in the 14th minute when William Hewer dived in, picking up a yellow in the process. Cyril Freyling fired in the drag-flick, clipping the underside of the crossbar for his fifth goal of the campaign to make it 1-1. England bounced back, winning a number of corners before the half-time break but could not find a way through the defences of van den Broucke. Belgium then went in front early in the second half when Romain Delavignette’s pass trickled all the way through to Boris Gougnard. With time in the circle, he steadied himself before unleashing a rocket to the top corner for a 2-1 advantage. It signalled the start of an English onslaught as they pushed forward in search of their equaliser. Their corner count moved up and up while both sides shipped yellow cards. The leveller came in the 62nd minute from one of those corners, Lucas Ward pumping home the second phase chance with a brutal bash. Belgium had the better chances to win it in the closing phases but McCallum kept out a pair of shots to send the game to shoot-out. There, Emile Esquilin gave Belgium the early advantage, Oliver Rogerson equalised in round two before Loic Sidler scored the all-important effort for 2-1 before van der Broucke took over with three successive saves and a bronze medal.
England U18 Boys hit Italy for six 25.07.2016 England Under-18 Boys 6 (1) Italy Under-18 Boys 0 (0) Five second half goals helped England Under-18 Boys secure their first win of the EuroHockey Youth Championships as they beat Italy in Cork on Monday afternoon. Superior energy and fitness levels showed as England scored several late goals while Italy were down to ten men and ran out of steam. “I was pleased with the way the boys took up the task and moved the ball stick to stick and carried out the game plan which was an improvement on the previous day’s second half performance,” said Head Coach Jody Paul. “Energy and fitness showed in the last quarter of this match, and it was a good result going into our final group game against Spain.” Eddie Way got England off the mark from a 27th minute penalty corner, but Italy had proved hard to break down with some strong defensive play and were very much still in the game at half time. But as the second half progressed England took control, and although both sides were shown yellow cards it was England who coped better and made the most of the time when Italy were short-handed. A break down the right came across the dead ball line, and the Italian goalkeeper could only parry the ball away, while Tom Crowson was on hand to tidy up with a 45th minute goal. Eddie Way fired low to the goalkeeper’s right at a 59th minute penalty corner which put England three-nil ahead. Matt Ramshaw scored his first England goal from a 62nd minute melee in front of goal, and captain James Oates scored on 64 minutes to make it five-nil. Finally, Duncan Scott scored the sixth goal after some very good tight skills in the circle. As well as their goal-scoring feats, England defended well with Rory McCallum doing superbly in goal and making good saves at two Italian penalty corners. After a rest day on Tuesday, the Under-18 Boys face Spain on Wednesday lunchtime.
