HISTORY MADE AS TEMPLE CARRIG CLAIM FIRST FR GODFREY CUP TITLE March 10, 2017 / 9:24 am / Site Editor
Temple Carrig took the first competition they have taken part in when holding on gamely to win the Bank of Ireland Leinster Schools Fr Godfrey Junior Cup at Donnybrook on Thursday. The Greystones school looked for space straight away, while Wesley preferred a more pragmatic route forward. The first real crack came when Wesley won a scrum against the head for number eight Peter Costello to take the ball on. The recycle came for full-back Jamie Metchette to stretch the defence going left. A penalty was conceded by Temple and they were punished when captain Jamie Kavanagh went quickly and Metchette popped up on the left to skate in for 5-0 in the 10th minute.
Temple Carrig looked to number eight Patrick Kieran,

and centres Cian Hingerty and Jack Ryan to take it to their opponents. Slowly, Wesley owned more of the territory as their driving game kept them in the right areas. It left Temple looking to strike from distance, a risky business, from out-half Sean Mason’s distribution. Wesley’s centre Luke Fitzpatrick and big lock Tadgh O’Neill made inroads before the breakdown let them down. Mason was always probing for an opening and it was his eye for space that forced a lineout on halfway. From there, Ryan thundered on and his offload found Kieran with the legs to get away from the defence for the tying try. Mason converted for 7-5 on the half-time whistle. Wesley had to be vigilant when captain Kieran burst clear to put wing Max Patton in a promising position until closed down by Metchette. A high tackle allowed full-back Thade Shanahan to find the corner and Wesley’s Daniel Fives was binned for the indiscretion. A phenomenal carry by centre Ryan took Temple right up to the line. It was enough for a scrum and Conor Fulham broke right to feed Max Patton for their second try in the 44th minute. They had something to really protect and replacement James McGoldrick had to be stopped in his tracks to keep it that way. Wesley looked to lift the tempo, scrum-half Jack Atkinson tapping a penalty. The pressure caused flanker Zach Evans to be binned under severe pressure. Number eight Peter Costello carried with intent and lock Tadgh O’Neill drove over to narrow the difference to 12-10 in the 57th minute. They came again, centre Fitzpatrick raiding down the right without being able to get away. But that was it. Temple had survived. History had been made.

There were certainly no first day Donnybrook jitters for Temple as they took hold of the ball and refused to part with it until hooker David Prendergast’s nimble offload put wing Josh Sproul over on the left in the second minute. It must have come as something of a shock to St Mary’s defence system as the offloads kept coming. Then, St Mary’s finally got their hands on the ball for flanker Clinton Nkpa to fire up their attack on the left and wing Oscar King to speed over on the right to level it up. The give and take continued as Temple out-half Sean Mason moved the ball beautifully into the hands of strong centres Cian Hingerty and Jack Ryan for full-back Thade Shanahan to make it 10-5 in the tenth minute.
The Greystones school had hit their stride and they were not about to let up, wing Max Patton flashing around the outside for their third try. This did not discourage St Mary’s, out-half Ruairi Hanlon’s ball over the top taken on the bounce by King. The support could not get there in time and Temple broke away for scrum-half Conor Fulham to finish off a smart move. The quick-thinking of Hanlon to launch a penalty was pre-planned, for captain Karl Martin was all alone to collect and dot down as well as add the conversion for 20-12 in the 25th minute. They weren’t done. Hanlon’s exquisite floated pass put wing Dominic McCabe away to narrow it to 20-17 at the interval. There was an air of excitement about the second-half given what had gone before. It never lived up to the expectation as Temple simply ran away with it. Right wing Patton became a one-man scoring machine in racking up a second-half hat-trick to make it a personal haul of four. There was also time for one from prop Jordon O’Connor to ease Temple Carrig through to the Bank of Ireland Junior Cup first round where they will play Belvedere. Read the preview for the Bank of Ireland Fr Godfrey Cup semi-final between St Mary’s Diocesan and Temple Carrig School (Thursday, Donnybrook, 12pm). This is a most interesting encounter in that it pitches in new school Temple Carrig and St Mary’s from Drogheda. Temple Carrig was formed just three years ago and have made it to this point in their first year of Junior Cup. The Bray school was looking forward to taking on local rivals Pres when St Mary’s ruined that potential cracker by taking out the more familiar Bray school 36-29 in the quarter-final. “You could say it is a Cup-tie between two schools that have never heard of each other,” said Temple coach Mark Crean. Temple have an impressive leader in number eight Patrick Kieran, their captain and go-forward fall-back. Fly-half Sean Mason is their playmaker and Jack Ryan gives their backline a focal point for their attack. St Mary’s are more about the collective than the individuals. Having said that, their captain Karl Martin has pounced for four tries in two matches. The potential of St Mary’s this season was flagged when they moved from the Development section to the Duff Cup for which they have already qualified for the final. They are in bonus-territory. But, you wouldn’t know that from the way they have came through against Pres Bray in the quarter-final.
The schools were level on five occasions before St Mary’s edged it 36-29 in a belter of a game. It is this commitment to keep going that will form the foundation for what is a really interesting encounter between two new forces. St Mary’s: Luke Sweeney; Sean Murray, Oscar King, Tony Smith, Dominic McCabe; Karl Martin, Sean Horan; David Hobbs, Mark Tully, Killian Jennings, Evan Tyndall, Darragh O’Brien, Clinton Nkpa, Jake Cunningham, Jack McQuail. Temple Carrig: Thade Shanahan; Josh Sproul, Cian Hingerty, Jack Ryan, Max Patton; Sean Mason, Conor Fulham; Jordan O’Connor, David Prendergast, Cormac Coffey, Joe Barford, Killian Burke, James Clark, Zach Evans, Patrick Kieran (capt). PATHS TO THE SEMI-FINAL. FIRST ROUND: St Mary’s 39 King’s Hospital 19; Temple Carrig 70 Good Counsel, New Ross 0. QUARTER-FINAL: St Mary’s 36 Pres Bray 29; Temple Carrig 22 Scoil Chonglais 10.
