Belgium And Germany Boys Make Early Impact In Pool A As Spain Top Pool B Germany on the attack against Ireland. Picture: Adrian Boehm Germany 5 (J Schiffer 2, F Bock, E Knobling, T Henrichs) Ireland 0 Germany’s corner proficiency under-pinned their excellent start to the campaign, scoring from three set-pieces to see off home hosts Ireland. They did not have it all their own way, though, as Matthew Nelson almost nicked in for an early goal, through one-on-one with Alexander Stadler but the goalkeeper stood tall from the first major chance. The Germans were moving the ball well, however, using their platform to launch overlaps down the two sidelines to create chances. They went ahead from their second corner in the 13th minute, Fedor Bock flicking in from a switch move. Despite Raphael Hartkopf ’s yellow card, Germany extended their lead when Jan Schiffer went direct from another corner, 2-0 at half-time. Eric Knobling finished off an excellent right wing move for the third 10 minutes into the second half when Linus Muller wriggled free and his pass was met perfectly by the attacker. Schiffer flicked in an unorthodox personal second to make it 4-0 from the sixth German corner. Teo Henrichs then completed the scoring with a brilliant lobbed finish from the right baseline, finding the tightest possible angle. Irish coach Gareth Borland said of his team’s performance: “We gave them a good battle in the first half and were well in the game but gave them too many soft short corners. “We are happy with this as a start point, happy with the boys and their attitude, working right the way until the end of the game.” Team Minute Shirt # Player Action

Jan Schiffer scored no fewer than 5 goals all from penalty corners; he produced a selection of drag flicks left and right combined with low drills into the bottom corners to leave Vaclav Uhlir with no chance in the Czech goal. The Germans transitioned the ball from defence to attack in the blink of an eye but credit must go to the entire Czech team for their spirited performance throughout. Germany Are U18 EuroHockey Men’s Champions 30th July 2016: After 20 games we have a new EuroHockey Champion, Germany Final: Germany 4 (R Hartkopf 2, J Schiffer, L Harms) Netherlands 3 (D de Vilder 2, S Schoenaker)
Germany won an epic penalty corner shootout to win the boys EuroHockey Youth Championships title ahead of the Netherlands as their first half work was never caught by the orange tide. Despite all the goals coming from set pieces, this was a match full of flair and technical wizardry, the dribbling skills on display a joy to watch in an intense affair, enjoyed by a large crowd at the Mardyke. Leopold Harms got the ball rolling in the 16th minute with a low drag-flick; Raphael Hartkopf got the second, sliding in to deflect Paul Doesch’s low push into the goal. Siem Schoenacker got one back when a corner move was blocked but the Dutch recovered before working the ball into the centre and he flicked in. Jan Schiffer – who ended as tournament top goalscorer with nine goals – restored the two-goal advantage, though, on the half hour with another direct drag-flick to the right corner, 3-1 at half-time. And Germany were in dreamland when Hartkopf picked up a rebound and pushed in the fourth goal. The Netherlands summoned a big sprint in the final quarter as they looked to grab a famous comeback. Captain Derck de Vilder got one back with a low bullet of a corner for 4-2 with 11 minutes to go and they had their chances to get another on the board – especially when Germany were reduced to nine players. But the only chance that stuck was a penalty stroke on the final second, converted by de Vilder. Germany were already celebrating, however, and despite the concession they were already racing to hug each other in the throes of victory.
