Belgium And Germany Boys Make Early Impact In Pool A As Spain Top Pool B 24th July 2016: Day 1 of the U18 EuroHockey Championship got underway at 2 venues in Cork, with all the teams in action. U18 Boys EuroHockey Championships, Pool A Belgium 8 (C Freyling 2, A De Chaffoy 2, B Gougnard 2, W Ghislain, L Sidler) Czech Republic 0 Belgium swept to a strong opening win in Pool A over the Czech Republic to start their EuroHockey Youth Championships in great fashion. Cyril Freyling gave them the perfect start, converting a fourth minute penalty stroke. From there, they were frustrated for much of the first half as the Czechs defended well with Michal Kourimsky making fine saves and Jaroslav Kasl keeping things together. But a yellow card for Ondrej Dubina reduced their numbers and almost immediately Achille de Chaffoy added the second goal, stealing the ball from the two centre backs and pumping home. A lovely umpiring advantage allowed Loic Sidler to slip a pass to Boris Gougnard to slide home the third goal of the half. It broke the Czech’s resistance and Belgium raced clear after the break. De Chaffoy added the fourth, Freyling whipped home a penalty corner and Gougnard applied a brilliant reverse-stick finish to make it 6-0. William Ghislain got the seventh before the Czechs had their best moment when Denis Tomes hit the post from a corner. Belgium countered direct from there with Sidler finishing off the eighth goal. Speaking afterwards about the result, Belgian coach Simon Letchford said he was “really happy” with the performance. ”We did miss a fair few opportunities but given the preparation we have had over the last few weeks, it was important for us to get off to a strong start.” Looking at the wider competition, he is targeting a top four place. “At Euro Under-18s, it’s a balance between performance and outcomes. For sure, we would be disappointed if we don’t make the semi-finals and anything after that is a bonus.” Team Minute Shirt # Score Belgium 4 17 Belgium 29 16 0 Belgium 35 22 Belgium 38 16 0 Belgium 45 17 Belgium 53 22 Belgium 57 10 gpfoto 29 0

Belgium 3 (Freyling, Devis, Gougnard) Ireland 1(Sarratt) Belgium have booked their semi final spot of the U18 Eurohockey Championships with a 3-1 victory over Ireland, though the scoreline in no way reflects how closely matched these two sides were for the opening 60 minutes of this action packed game. There was rarely a dull moment in front of a packed crowd in Garryduff, with vocal Irish and Belgium fans cheering on their sides. Kyle Marshall was the engine room of the Irish side and distributed the ball up the pitch at will. But Belgium had an equal to Marshall in the form of Loic Sidler who created opportunities from thin air as he glided through the centre of the field. The sides exchanged penalty corner goals in the first half, Ireland’s coming from Guy Sarratt once again to add to his hat trick from yesterday’s match against Czech Republic. Belgium to the lead for the first time thanks to a tap in at the back post that caught the Irish defence unawares in the 59th minute. Ireland pulled keeper Luke Roleston, who made several fine saves, in the 64th minute but were quickly caught in a 2v1 situation that left the kicking-back with no chance and Boris Gougnard made it 3-1. A super performance from both sides with very little in it for the vast majority of the game; Ireland now move into Pool C and face Spain at 12pm on Friday. U18 EuroHockey Championships Boys – Netherlands To Play Germany In The Final 29th July 2016: Another full day of hockey here in Cork with much at stake for the teams – medal games and attempts to stay in the top division of the EuroHockey Championships. Semi-Final Netherlands 3 – 3 (1 – 2) (4 – 3 SO) Belgium The Belgians started the game with huge intensity and went ahead vis L.Sidler in the 4th minute. Mathieu Weyers drove along the left and completed a lovely pass to Sidler. He finished it off with a slap into the top corner. Netherlands replied in the

8th minute via D. de Vilder. For 15 minutes the score remained 1-1 but then a deflected corner from E.Devis put Belgium back in front. The score stayed 2-1 to Belgium at the half. The second half was full of drama! Another deflected corner and Netherlands were back on level terms in the 51st minute, deflected in by S.Schoenaker. In the 54th minute Belgium took the lead for the 3rd time but once again the boys in Orange equalised from a turnover ball. It resulted in the 1st shoot-out of the tournament. And what a Shoot Out! Both teams missed their 1st attempt, but from then on it was superb goal after superb goal . Especially the shoot-out by Emile Esquelin which will be well remembered, the Belgian lobbed the keeper and waited with baited breath as the ball sailed through the air and finally landed in the goal. The Dutch keeper played really well and contributed to the final score of 4-3 and a final place for the Dutch boys. Belgium 2 (C Freyling, B Gougnard) England 2 (E Gilmour, L Ward), Belgium win 2-1 in a shoot-out Belgium finally got a win in a shoot-out after a number of rough defeats in the last two days as goalkeeper Simon van den Broucke made four saves to deny England and claim European bronze. It came after a cracking encounter between two side full of pace,

trickery and power with little quarter asked for or given. England took the lead from a tenth minute penalty corner when Euan Gilmour grabbed a smartly taken rebound from close range. But this was never going to be an easy ride for either team. Soon after, Boris Gougnard tested Rory McCallum’s reflexes and Belgium won a corner in the 14th minute when William Hewer dived in, picking up a yellow in the process. Cyril Freyling fired in the drag-flick, clipping the underside of the crossbar for his fifth goal of the campaign to make it 1-1. England bounced back, winning a number of corners before the half-time break but could not find a way through the defences of van den Broucke. Belgium then went in front early in the second half when Romain Delavignette’s pass trickled all the way through to Boris Gougnard. With time in the circle, he steadied himself before unleashing a rocket to the top corner for a 2-1 advantage. It signalled the start of an English onslaught as they pushed forward in search of their equaliser. Their corner count moved up and up while both sides shipped yellow cards. The leveller came in the 62nd minute from one of those corners, Lucas Ward pumping home the second phase chance with a brutal bash. Belgium had the better chances to win it in the closing phases but McCallum kept out a pair of shots to send the game to shoot-out. There, Emile Esquilin gave Belgium the early advantage, Oliver Rogerson equalised in round two before Loic Sidler scored the all-important effort for 2-1 before van der Broucke took over with three successive saves and a bronze medal.
