Nearly 100 studios, galleries, makerspaces, restaurants and other businesses along Burlington’s Pine Street and Flynn Avenue corridors roll out the welcome mat for throngs of art lovers. Events indoors and out amaze, inspire and even physically engage viewers in the artistic process. The South End Arts + Business Association provides all the details of the threeday event beginning on page 11 of this handy guide. To explore what’s hoppening in the South End, we spoke with members of Pine Street’s E-1 Studio Collective, including founder Terry Zigmund, who has helmed the art-making hub for 22 years. We also talked with painter Charlotte Dworshak about her artistic rise and learning from her famous mentor — her mother, Katharine Montstream. And we got the deets on “C’est pas là, c’est par là (It’s Not That Way, It’s This Way),” a participatory event presented by the Flynn and SEABA that may tie you up for a while. All this sleuthing made us hungry and thirsty, so we scoped out the new Venetian Soda Lounge — it puts the “soda” back in “Soda Plant”! — and compiled a list of seven other spots for gustatory delights along the route. Hop along, now!

TERRY ZIGMUND Artist Rodney Lowe in the E-1 Studio Collective

I n the weeks leading up to the South End Art Hop, stained glass artist Terry Zigmund and her studio mates were sprucing up the E-1 Studio Collective on Burlington’s Pine Street. Using cardboard stencils in shapes evoking cutouts by Henri Matisse, Zigmund planned to paint designs on the driveway and surrounding alleys. The colorful marks would blaze a trail directing passersby to the arts enclave behind Speeder & Earl’s“YouCoffee.canfollow these wacky shapes and see where it takes you,” Zigmund said. For her, the trail leads to a community she values. Creating art can be a solitary endeavor, but E-1 brings artists together: Ten of them share space in the two-story brick building. Jasper and Lilah, Zigmund’s dogs, hang out there, too. It’s not a new phenomenon for artists to divvy up studio space; in fact, it’s one way to sustain art making over time. According to the artists who work at E-1, the arrangement has practical, social and even creative benefits.Withrental space in short supply in Burlington, sharing a studio makes sense. Splitting the rent among several people keeps individual costs down. And being around other artists offers opportunities to talk shop, exchange ideas and some timesEachcollaborate.artistatE-1 has their own space in an open floor plan that Zigmund calls “cool and funky.” One studio is tucked under a staircase. Another is in a loft with a skylight. Abstract paint ings, stained glass pieces and graphite portraits share wall space. A small gallery near the front door is an exhibit space for the artists, who offer their work for sale. Customers leave cash in a jar or pay by Venmo.“Ireally like the environment,” said painter Sarah Rosedahl, 60, who works in a loft space. “As artists, we work by ourselves, alone, so much.” She likes having both her own space and “a little bit of social chitchat and water-cooler kind of things.” She added, “Everybody’s respectful of everybody else and their space and time and what they’re doing.”

Zigmund, 54, has made glass art for 22 years at E-1, where she runs Burlington Community Glass Studio. Pieces of col ored glass, arrayed in different designs, often frame an image of a tree or a heart in her work. As the principal tenant at E-1, she holds the lease with Unsworth Properties, the company that owns 416 PineZigmundStreet. sublets studio space to the nine other artists, who pay her between $135 and $275 a month, she said. In her two decades at E-1, Zigmund has shared the building with a changing roster of artists. She’s reconfigured the space and made improvements, with the OK from the landlord, to accommodate evolving needs. Zigmund works full time at E-1; other artists come and go, dictated by schedules and day jobs. The studio space is available for working — but not for living, she stressed — day and night. Typically, a few artists work on-site at a time.“My vision for the space was to be open so we could all kind of commingle,” Zigmund said. “I’ve had people here who wanted a private place, but I’m not the spot for those people.” When a subtenant leaves and a space at E-1 opens up, it’s sometimes rented by word of mouth before Zigmund gets a chance to post it online. A recent studio listed on Craigslist was rented out in less than 24 hours, she said. “I could charge more, but I don’t want to do that,” Zigmund said. “Why should I? I just want to have a space where I can work, and I want to be surrounded by people who are likeminded. And I want to be accessible so they can have the same opportunity I have.”James Unsworth, who will turn 36 this week, is the fourth generation of his family to own buildings on Pine Street MY

“The values are just so high for hous ing,” he said. “I don’t want that carrot in front of me.” Furthermore, Unsworth added, “We care a lot about artists in the South“TheEnd.”deal is that we offer belowmarket rents for spaces like Terry’s in exchange for people not asking us” for upgrades or improvements, Unsworth continued. “That’s how we’re able to support the arts community in the South End: by renting to people who aren’t nagging us to do a lot of things.” That means Zigmund wears long underwear and a hat to work in the un insulated building in the winter. between Howard Street and Marble Avenue, as well as property on Howard Street. As general manager of the com pany, Unsworth said, he’s pleased to carry on his family’s business tradition of renting to artists and makers. More than 60 percent of the tenants in the complex are such artists and makers, according to Unsworth, includ ing those at AO Glass and Green Door Studio. Unsworth also said he’s glad he doesn’t have the option to convert the buildings to housing — the area is not zoned for residential use.

“Honestly, they let us do what we want,” she said of Unsworth Properties. “They don’t care if we paint the floors. They don’t care if we paint the walls. I have always found them to be fair and reasonable.”Unsworth, whose own office is on Howard Street, enjoys the proximity to the painters, sculptors, musicians and craftspeople who fill the adjacent buildings.“Oneof my favorite things is going to grab a cup of coffee at Speeder’s,” he said. “It’s hard not to have three conversations with folks about what they’re doing and how they’re preparing for Art Hop.” Zigmund also appreciates the easy access to fellow makers. “I love working here because I’m around a lot of other artists,” she said. “If I need a piece of wood, I can go right over to Sterling [Hardwoods]. If I need a hole drilled in a piece of glass, I can go to AO [Glass].” She might return the favor with a sixpack, she said. Artist Monica Andrews remembers visiting E-1 at Art Hop in 2019, a couple of months after she moved to Burlington. She thought to herself, “Wouldn’t it be cool to have a studio down there?” That idea became a reality in spring 2021, when a space opened up. She spot ted the listing online and immediately emailedAndrews,Zigmund.25,is assistant director of education at Shelburne Museum. She makes art at E-1, including pet portraits and logos, on her days off and in the evenings.“Ilove having a dedicated space to come and spread out,” she said. “It’s been such a joy to have peers and friends working there. I feel like I’ve grown a lot as an artist, and it’s felt really empowering to be able to try newZigmund’sthings.” dogs will stay home during Art Hop, but other E-1 regulars will be in their studios, creating art and chatting with each other and the visiting public. The pavement paintings will lead people to the building, and Rosedahl’s artwork on the front will let them know they’ve arrived. That’s right: Unsworth is even the kind of landlord who lets his tenants paint orange and blue chickens on the exterior — and a purple rabbit holding a sign that says “Choose Love.” m

Attendees find out firsthand at “C’est pas là, c’est par là (It’s Not That Way, It’s This Way),” a community performance event presented by the Flynn and South End Arts + Business Association at the South End Art Hop. Artists may supplement their practice by taking in commission work. Collaborating with a patron can be rewarding, though often challenging when you are also living up to others’ expectations. Know that your support is valuable, and being involved in the process may come with a higher price tag. Make sure that you both know the expectations when entering into the agreement!

“When we had breakfast after staying overnight, I was always like, ‘Look at these Mafia guys,’” Bunnell said of the photo depicting a group of men in threepiece suits in front of the original Pine Street plant. “It’s always inspired me as a filmmaker and storyteller.” Originally, Bunnell just wanted to make videos about the soda. But people liked his take on the spicy ginger ale, made with organic ginger juice, lime juice, cane sugar and cinnamon sticks. So District Daiquiri

N ostalgia is big in the food and drink world right now. Restaurants across the country are embracing midwestern casseroles, blooming onions and wedge salads. In May, the New York Times predicted that the Dirty Shirley — a vodka-spiked version of the childhood classic — would be the drink of the summer.Thenew Venetian Soda Lounge in Burlington’s Soda Plant takes nostalgia back even further — to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The lounge is a familyfriendly soda fountain by day and a Prohibitionthemed speakeasy with boozy drinks by night, and it opened just in time for the South End Art Hop.The launch of the lounge in late August was a full-circle moment for Venetian Beverages owner Justin Bunnell and for the soda brand itself: The Soda Plant was Venetian’s original home back in Early1917.visitors to the Soda Lounge, which occupies the former CO Cellars space at Suite 122, were greeted with a video recounting Venetian’s history. Bunnell made it wearing his other hat: video producer and owner of RetroMotion Creative.

“Our story takes you on an adventure from continent to continent across a great vast sea,” the video begins. At the turn of the 20th century, Michael C. Dorn — Bunnell’s great-great-grandfa ther — immigrated to the United States from war-torn Europe. Dorn opened a café in Burlington, where he was known as “the master of the silver shaker,” whipping up intriguing aperitifs. Prohibition halted Dorn’s cocktail shaking, but “his ingenuity allowed him to pivot,” the video continues. He began experimenting with carbonated bever ages, creating his Venetian Ginger Ale. Dorn and his three sons then launched

M. & F.C. Dorn Bottling and headquar tered their plant at the building now known as the Soda Plant — a nod to its beverage heyday. Sales of Dorn’s ginger ale spread throughout the Northeast until, “just as sure as fizz in a soda,” the video recounts, the company pivoted again during World War II. This time it switched to co-packing and beer distribution, and the Venetian brand was “forgotten to history.” Bunnell revived the brand in 2017, creating a ginger ale inspired by his great-great-grandfather’s recipe. Bunnell had grown up hearing stories about the family business — including tales of bootlegging during Prohibition. He was fascinated by a photo that hung in his grandparents’ Milton home when he was a kid.

Venetian Beverages has partnered with the lounge’s next-door neighbor, Brio Coffeeworks, to expand and share each business’ space. A garage door separating the two will be open during the day so that Brio’s patrons can grab a couch in the Soda Lounge to enjoy their coffee. At night, Soda Lounge customers can spill into Brio’s shop; a new bar space between the two, which Venetian Beverages is subleasing, will allow bartenders to serve on both sides.

Bunnell inherited a box full of historic Venetian beverages memo rabilia when his grandfather passed away. The photos, marketing materials and even an original root beer bottle — with soda still in it — are on display at the Soda Lounge. Mike Turner of the Barre-based Arcana Workshop, who builds props for RetroMotion Creative’s videos, constructed sculp tures and added faux-mirror arches above the windows to give the space an art deco feel.

A piano sits in front of the video screen, ready to host a regular roster of local musicians and other entertainment focused on era-appropriate jazz.

The collaboration extends to both companies’ menus, too. For the Soda Lounge’s soft opening, Brio offered the Nice Neighbor, a special espresso Dark ’n’ Stormy made with Venetian Ginger Ale and a double shot of Brio’s Calypso espresso blend. The drink was served over ice with a maraschino cherry and finished with an aromatic spritz of Spicy Ginger Mist from another Soda Plant biz: Alice & the Magician.

The Soda Lounge’s cocktail menu features a play on the ubiquitous espresso martini. Called Jetfuel, it’s made with Brio’s flash-chilled espresso, vodka from Black Flannel Distilling in Essex and Amaro Averna. “If it wasn’t for Brio, for [cofound ers] Magda and Nate [Van Dusen], we would never do this,” Bunnell said. “The collaborative efforts of the Soda Plant areBunnellawesome.”also credited Soda Plant owner Steve Conant for his work in bringing the space back to life as a small-business hub. In recent years, the founder of Conant Metal & Light has turned the old bottling plant into an exciting entrepreneurial incubator, bringing in businesses such as Brio, Tomgirl and Pitchfork Pickle.

“I remember my grandfather saying this place was a piece of shit,” Bunnell said with a laugh. “But Steve had the vision.” Once more businesses began opening at the Soda Plant in 2019, Bunnell understood Conant’s vision, and returning Venetian to its original home “made perfect sense,” he Beyondsaid. its role as a drinking destina tion, the Soda Lounge is also a testing ground for future Venetian Beverages flavors. All of the Soda Lounge’s syrups — from blueberry pie to maple cola to six-spice pineapple — are made in-house in small batches, many from local ingredients. Whatever’s most popular, Bunnell said, will go into cans for distribution. INFO Venetian Soda Lounge, 266 Pine venetiansodalounge.comBurlington,Street,881-0975,

A skilled jerk was a “consummate show man, innovator and freelance linguist,” Witzel“Youwrote.won’t be a success in the hospitality industry unless you’re truly hospitable,” McCurdy said with a smile, as he jerked sodas and shook cocktails one by one, until the bar was a rainbow of beverages, both bubbly andBunnellboozy. sipped one of McCurdy’s syrup experiments, a raspberry cream, as the two discussed how it could transform a mudslide or a daiquiri — or whatever their customers dream up, from soda to spritz. “Making something like this is kind of like directing a movie,” Bunnell said. “You’re directing an experience for people. Like at any good soda fountain, the fizzy drinks are jerked to order. The bartender adds housemade syrups to a glass and then hits it with bubbling water from the bar’s carbonation tower. Customers can order a soda float: a dollop of vanilla or chocolate creemee on ginger ale or any other jerked soda. Creemees are also available on their own or in a variety of mudslides, from traditional to the Espresso Slide, which includes Brio’s espresso, vanilla vodka, Carolans Irish Cream, cream soda syrup and vanilla creemee. Seeking something savory? The food options include simple cheese boards, pretzel sticks, and a menu of classic franks, sausages and veggie dogs. Most of the soda syrups can also be transformed into cocktails. Lemontarragon syrup goes into a twist on the classic Vesper; strawberry syrup amps up the Art District Daiquiri; and blue berry pie syrup sweetens the Southend Blueberry.“It’slike the soda shop’s the front for the speakeasy,” Bunnell said. The man transforming the syrups is Liam McCurdy. A week before the Soda Lounge’s soft opening, McCurdy was behind the bar, decked out in suspend ers and a straw boater hat. The longtime bartender already embodied the energy of an old-timey soda jerk — a role Michael Karl Witzel called “the pop cul ture star of the Gilded Age” in his 2002 book The American Drive-In Restaurant

“I worked nights in a restaurant and by day would walk around [the city],” Dworshak says. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, she recalls, “For the first time I had an urge to make things for my home.” She started by making simple block prints of minimalist landscapes and found she enjoyed experimenting with color. Then her prints began to reflect a favorite family vacation spot back east: Martha’s Vineyard. To her amazement, “People wanted to buy them!” she says. “And that was how it began.” Dworshak, now 31, returned to her hometown in 2017. “I was excited to come back — I’d been away eight years — and experience Burlington as an adult,” she says. Mom is Katharine Montstream, a highly successful Vermont artist whose paintings of landscapes and florals are also reproduced in popular greeting cards. She remembers those kiddie lessons in the car. “We walk through the world, and we assume what color things are,” Montstream says. “It was more about teaching them to be observant of nature, not just art.” Dworshak notes that growing up surrounded by art was more influential than she realized at the time. She gives equal props to her dad, Alan Dworshak, for running the Montstream enterprise — including a prominent gallery in downtown Burlington. “He’s really good at selling art,” Charlotte Dworshak says. “It’s hard to sell your own work.” The confluence of artistic and busi ness acumen in the same household is rare. Painting alongside a parent might be, too. Yet these days, Dworshak is frequently working away in the Soda Plant space she shares with her mother. The fast-motion videos she posts on Instagram underscore the idea that Dworshak is racing to finish another piece — or six. Though amusing, the videos symbolize her devotion to master ing the craft. “I want to be an incredible artist in 15 to 20 years, so I’m just taking the steps to get there,” she says. “You learn technique by making as much as you can. You learn from every Dworshakpainting.”initially had no interest in joining the family business. She left Vermont to attend the University of Colorado Boulder, where she majored in English literature, and then spent several years in Los Angeles. (It’s another parallel with Montstream, who also went to college in Colorado and lived on the West Coast before moving to Vermont.)

“I’ve always loved still lifes and never thought I was good enough to do them,” she says. “Then I did one and thought, Holy shit! I realized I had a sense of color.”

“People always leave surprised and happy,” she reports.

Dworshak admits to feeling a bit of “impostor syndrome,” but she’s grateful about the turn her life has taken toward art. “I learned from my mother to see beauty and magic all around you,” she says. “I feel so lucky to be able to do this.”

Already a self-taught photographer, Dworshak has been taking classes — in painting and ceramics — at the Shelburne Craft School. She also occasionally leads some paint-and-sip sessions herself. “I’m good at teaching those because I’ve only been [painting] for two years,” Dworshak says. She believes the participants take encouragement from her just-do-it attitude.

Dworshak also discovered she doesn’t need to bother with exacting detail: “I just do the shapes,” she says. “It doesn’t need to be perfect; it can be loose and playful.”While

Montstream uses oil and watercolor and works on multiple paintings at once, Dworshak favors fast-drying acrylic and turning out as many pieces as possible, one after another. Despite their di erent approaches, Dworshak acknowledges that her mother “is hugely inspirational and helpful. I still learn a lot from her — I’ve probably watched her make thousands of paintings.”Inturn,Montstream appreciates her daughter’s observations in the studio: “She’s really good at helping me critique through things I might not be so certain of,” she says. “Charlotte has an incredible eye for seeing spatial relationships and color. If you’re not sure something’s working, it’s really helpful to have honest feedback.” Dworshak also acknowledges the support of her longtime friend Patricia Trafton, whom she’s known since kindergarten. Trafton owns Soapbox Arts, a gallery right next door in the Soda Plant. “I learn a lot from Patricia,” Dworshak says — in particular about the business of selling art.
