BTV: The Burlington International Airport Quarterly is a bilingual magazine — translated into French for our Québécois visitors — that highlights Vermont’s recreational, cultural and dining scenes according to the season. If you’ve come to enjoy our winter wonderland, you’ll find some tempting options within these pages. Or, if you’re just passing through Vermont, we hope this issue convinces you to return for a longer stay! Use this magazine, too, as a guide to the airport and on-the-ground transportation options. While you’re waiting for takeoff, the Burlington International Airport aims to make your stay a pleasant one. Please have a look around and enjoy its amenities and services, including locavore food vendors, a yoga space, breastfeeding rooms, charging stations and free Wi-Fi, and local art. Why BTV? Many folks flying through BTV wonder about the airport’s three-letter location identifier. Vermont’s postal code is VT, so why isn’t it BVT? That’s especially baffling, as BVT isn’t already used by another airport.

Here’s a little history. Airport codes arose in the 1930s. The early ones simply copied the two-letter designations used by the National Weather Service, which typically sets up weather-data stations at airfields. But as commercial aviation expanded, the federal government switched to the three-letter system, which offered thousands more combinations. Some airports simply added an X to their original two-letter abbreviations, and those codes stuck. Hence LAX (Los Angeles International) and PDX (Portland International). Today, many of the three-letter codes still make sense. They include Boston (BOS), Atlanta (ATL) and Salt Lake City (SLC). Others, such as Chicago’s O’Hare (ORD), are puzzling until you learn the airport’s history: Prior to 1949, O’Hare was named Orchard Field. By all reports, Burlington International’s threeletter code has always been BTV — leaving the placement of the V a mystery. But the moniker is far preferable to that of the Sioux Gateway Airport in Sioux City, Iowa (SUX), Brazil’s Poços de Caldas Airport (POO), Perm International Airport in Russia (PEE) or Butler Memorial Airport in Missouri (BUM). Burlingtonians have come to embrace the slightly offbeat BTV abbreviation, adopting it as a fitting nickname and Twitter hashtag for their quirky hometown.

Pourquoi BTV?

Bien des voyageurs qui passent par BTV s’interrogent sur la signification de cet indicatif à trois lettres. Au Vermont, le code postal est VT… alors pourquoi ne dit-on pas BVT? Il y a lieu de se poser la question, puisqu’aucun autre aéroport n’utilise le sigle BVT. Un peu d’histoire... C’est dans les années 1930 que les indicatifs d’aéroport ont vu le jour. À l’origine, il s’agissait des mêmes sigles à deux lettres que ceux du National Weather Service, qui exploitait des postes météorologiques sur les terrains d’aviation. Mais avec l’essor de l’aviation commerciale, le gouvernement fédéral est passé au système à trois lettres, qui offrait beaucoup plus de combinaisons. Certains aéroports ont simplement greffé un X à leur sigle initial à deux lettres, et ces codes leur sont restés. D’où les indicatifs LAX (aéroport international de Los Angeles) et PDX (aéroport international de Portland). Aujourd’hui, bon nombre de ces codes à trois lettres demeurent limpides, comme ceux des aéroports de Boston (BOS), d’Atlanta (ATL) et de Salt Lake City (SLC). D’autres, comme celui de l’aéroport O’Hare de Chicago (ORD), sont plus mystérieux, à moins de connaître l’histoire qui se cache derrière : en effet, avant 1949, O’Hare s’appelait Orchard Field. Tout le monde s’entend pour dire que le code à trois lettres de l’aéroport international de Burlington a toujours été BTV – la position du V demeure donc un mystère. ome deep winter, snow whitewashes Vermont from its peaks to its valleys. While the view is good from any elevation, the mountains call out this time of year, promising skiers and riders ripping run after run down their powdery slopes. Take your pick of mountain resorts — there’s a handful within an hour’s drive of Burlington. They’re full of classic trails that can make athletes of all levels feel like champions. But they also hit the mark when it comes to off-piste adventures, cozy indoor amenities and an abundance of nearby après-ski eats. It’s more than enough to make you head for the hills.

En moins de temps qu’il n’en faut pour faire livrer une pizza, skieurs et planchistes peuvent se précipiter au Bolton Valley Resort, qui s’étend sur 5 000 acres à 30 minutes seulement du centreville de Burlington. Les longues pistes de niveau intermédiaire du télésiège quadruple Timberline sont les plus prisées de cette station, qui culmine à 960 mètres. De Vista Peak, les experts peuvent faire du ski de forêt à travers les clairières. Les débutants pourront quant à eux descendre Sherman’s Pass en chasse-neige ou pratiquer leurs premiers virages sur la pente de Mighty-Mite, accessible par câble de remontée. La nuit tombée, du mercredi au samedi, les 10 pistes éclairées au-dessous du télésiège quadruple Vista brillent de mille feux. Le Nordic Center de la station offre 100 kilomètres de pistes de ski de fond et certains des plus beaux terrains pour le ski de randonnée nordique, notamment le pittoresque segment Bolton-Trapps de Catamount Trail, qui traverse tout le Vermont sur 483 kilomètres.

In less time than it takes to get a pizza delivered, skiers and riders can be slicing up the 5,000 snowcovered acres at Bolton Valley Resort. It’s located just 30 minutes from downtown Burlington. The most popular terrain from the 3,150-foot summit tends to be the Timberline Quad’s long intermediate trails. From Vista Peak, experts can hit the glades for tree-skiing, while beginners snowplow down Sherman’s Pass or learn their first turns off the Mighty-Mite rope tow. It’s at night, however, that this place really lights up, with 10 illuminated runs beneath the Vista Quad offered Wednesday through Saturday. The Nordic Center here allows access to 100 kilometers of cross-country trails and some of the state’s best backcountry terrain. This includes the iconic Bolton-Trapps section of the 300-mile Catamount Trail, which traces the entire spine of Vermont.

Les enfants qui apprennent à skier sortent toujours grandis de cette station sur trois montagnes, à 72 km de Burlington. C’est peut-être un peu grâce à Mogul Mouse et Billy Bob Bear, deux mascottes attachantes qui veillent à ce que les leçons de ski se déroulent toujours dans le plaisir! Vous pourriez les apercevoir en train d’animer des courses du côté de Sir Henry’s Hill ou de servir du chocolat chaud entre les séances de glissade sur tube! Les adultes ne sont pas en reste. Ici, la neige fraîche reste longtemps après être disparue dans d’autres stations du Vermont. Le secret? Des chutes de neige pouvant atteindre près de 8 mètres en moyenne et des remonte-pentes plus lents, ce qui réduit l’affluence. Il vaut donc la peine d’attendre un peu plus longtemps en file pour profiter au maximum de la poudreuse, particulièrement sur les sommets Madonna et Sterling. De retour au centre, il est tentant de se délasser les muscles dans les piscines et bains-tourbillon à l’intérieur, mais les plus vaillants ne manqueront pas de faire la randonnée jusqu’aux cascades glacées du fameux col (« notch » en anglais), qui sépare Jeffersonville de Stowe.

Children learning to ski typically take a turn for the better at this three-mountain resort, 45 miles from Burlington. That could be thanks to a pair of fuzzy mascots — Mogul Mouse and Billy Bob Bear — who romp around the grounds, ensuring that ski lessons stay fun. Look for them hosting races on Sir Henry’s Hill or serving hot chocolate in between snow-tubing sessions. There’s plenty to keep the adults entertained, too — namely, the fresh snow that sticks around here long after it’s gone at some other Vermont resorts. The secret? An average annual snowfall topping 26 feet, and slower ski lifts, which serve to reduce crowds. So waiting in slightly longer lines pays off in powder stashes, especially off Madonna and Sterling peaks. Back at the base area, indoor pools and whirlpools tempt athletes with a relaxing soak — but trekking out to see the frozen waterfalls of the actual notch, separating Jeffersonville from Stowe, might prove more fun.

Located on Mount Mansfield, Vermont’s largest peak, Stowe Mountain Resort is about as close as the East gets to the pampering and powder of the American West’s much larger Rocky Mountain resorts. This popular spot, 43 miles from Burlington, is known for its fabled Front Four — a quartet of spine-tingling steeps spilling from the 4,396-foot summit — as well as its castle-like luxury lodges and the nearby plush spas and sushi spots. Start your exploration at the beginner-friendly Spruce Peak area or by meandering down the Toll Road, a winding beginner run nearly four miles long that hosts the famous Stowe Derby race every February. Work your way up to such classic intermediate runs as Hayride and Perry Merrill. For those not ready to tip down the Front Four (named National, Goat, Starr and Liftline), other adventures abound. Try soaring through the skies on the new zip line, spending the night in the Stone Hut cabin or simply submitting to a hot-stone massage at one of the many Stowe spas.

isitors to Vermont will likely see a few black-and-white bumper stickers sporting a simple command: “Ski the East.” For years, the message has served as a badge of honor for those who endure the challenging snow, sleet, rain and ice that befall East Coast skiers. There’s a world of difference between the ever-variable weather at Vermont ski resorts and the powder-constant conditions at their counterparts out west. “Ski the East” is more than just a slogan. It’s also the official motto of Burlington-area production company Meathead Films, which is devoted exclusively to showcasing the diverse conditions and terrain of East Coast skiing. Over the past decade, that company has grown into Ski the East, which sells outdoor winter apparel catering to men, women and kids who frequent ski areas all over the country. Meathead Films was founded in 2001 by skiing enthusiasts Geoff McDonald and Christopher James, who met as students at the University of Vermont. James, now 34, grew up in mid-coast Maine; McDonald, 33, is a native of Hudson, Ohio. They admit they were drawn to UVM largely by its proximity to the slopes of the Green Mountains. McDonald took up filmmaking after buying a video camera as a freshman, and he and James honed their production skills at UVMtv, a closed-circuit student television network that airs in campus buildings. McDonald and James spent many winter days skipping class, skiing and filming themselves and their buddies. While such high jinks didn’t boost their grade point averages, they did provide good practice for filming and editing videos in the years before YouTube. In 2001, the pair shot their first full-length feature, A Natural Force, about skiing, snowboarding and skateboarding. It was >> Page 18

released on VHS in the fall of 2002. In 2003, they put out a DVD of Elevated, dedicated entirely to the East Coast skiing experience. As McDonald puts it, “Going to college here, it was a great way to carve out a niche for ourselves.” A year after they graduated in 2004, James and McDonald devoted themselves to winter filmmaking full time. For the next decade, Meathead Films expanded its repertoire, forging relationships with athletes and sponsors up and down the East Coast. Its productions have taken the filmmakers as far south as Virginia and as far north as Newfoundland and the Chic-Choc Mountains in Québec’s Gaspé Peninsula. Once the crew traveled to the far East to film skiers in Japan, but nearly all of the other productions have kept their focus on wherever the snow happens to fall in eastern North America. For example, when two simultaneous storms pummeled Washington, D.C., with more than 40 inches of snow in February 2010, McDonald and James packed up their gear and invaded the U.S. capital to shoot footage at notable landmarks such as the Lincoln Memorial. The result was their 2010 movie Work It Out. The following year, Meathead Films released Prime Cut, which featured skiers performing aerial stunts while jumping over a sculpture of whales’ tails, a local landmark visible from Interstate 89 near Burlington. By 2012, James and McDonald could see the writing on the wall. With the DVD film industry collapsing, they decided they didn’t want to watch their business slide downhill, too. So they launched the outdoor apparel company Ski the East, named for the slogan they’d thought up in a bar in 2005 while trying to figure out how to sell more T-shirts at movie releases. Today, Meathead Films releases three- to five-minute ski webisodes for free online. But the filmmaking has taken a backseat to the clothing line, which has evolved into high-quality outdoor wear, including vests, fleeces, work shirts, thermals and base layers. All of it is printed by Burlington-based Select Design with, of course, the Ski the East motto. “It promotes camaraderie and pride for the region,” James says of the name. “The East Coast is the underdog in the ski industry, so I think people see that slogan and really relate to it.” “We consider Burlington to be the ski capital of the eastern United States,” McDonald adds. “There’s really nowhere else we’d want to be based.” 18 BTVMAGAZINE.COM

Some New Year’s Eve countdowns are short and sweet, lasting only as long as it takes for the ball to drop on the stroke of midnight. In Burlington, however, revelers observe far more than the year’s final seconds. The city’s First Night celebration — a substance-free tradition now in its 33rd year — commences at noon on December 31. In the 12 hours that follow, the festival of the arts spreads to more than 20 downtown venues, which host nearly 100 artists in all-ages performances. Vermont talent shines here: Don’t miss Circus Smirkus’ exuberant athleticism, Kat Wright & the Indomitable Soul Band’s powerhouse vocals, or Burlington cabbie Jernigan Pontiac’s taste-of-place storytelling. Wintervale Stretching alongside the mighty Winooski River, Burlington’s 350-acre Intervale bustles with organic farm activity in summer. When winter snow blankets those fields, they transform into a pristine playground. That’s why volunteers with the Intervale Center — a farmland cooperative working to strengthen community food systems — groom three miles of trails for classic and skate skiers. Visitors can glide through the fields at any time but should certainly plan to do so at the annual Wintervale celebration, which offers free ski, snowshoe and fat-bike rentals, as well as kids’ activities. Chilly out? Warm up with food-truck fare and hot cocoa from Lake Champlain Chocolates. La vallée de l’Intervale, qui s’étend sur 350 acres le long de l’impétueuse rivière Winooski, près de Burlington, bouillonne d’une intense activité agricole biologique en été. urlington City Arts curates art exhibits in three areas of the airport: the Skyway, the area above the escalator and the walls facing security for Gates 1-8. Whether you’ve arrived early for a flight or are waiting to pick up passengers, do take the time to look around! In December, the Gates area features Phil Laughlin’s oil paintings of the Champlain Valley and other New England locales. Cameron Schmitz’s representational works, painted directly from local landscapes, are on view in the Skyway. Starting in January, Alexis Doshas’ color photography, shot with vintage and handmade cameras, appears in the Gates. Robert Gold’s vivid acrylics on canvas, which seek to “uncover the extraordinary hidden within the ordinary,” hang in the Skyway. All winter long, Gaal Shepherd’s nature-inspired oils series can be seen above the escalator. If you’re going up, be sure to turn around and look at the wall behind you. But watch your step! All of these artists live in or have spent time in Vermont. Please enjoy examples of their work at the airport and on their individual websites. Why would someone want to learn to fly in Vermont? What we do in Vermont is really not done anywhere else. If you see where all the big aviation schools are, especially college aviation schools, they’re in warm places where you can fly every single day,

en Higgins once got caught in a mountain wave. That’s when wind moves over a mountain and causes an updraft on one side, as the gust blows toward the peak, and a downdraft on the other side. For a pilot in a small aircraft, that can create a serious and potentially uncontrollable situation. Higgins rode the wave unscathed. At age 17, he got his pilot’s license at the airstrip in Shelburne, Vt., and became seasoned at flying around the state’s mountains. With its 13 small planes, the academy schools roughly 40 students, plus another 25 or so individuals who are independently pursuing a pilot’s license. The academy accounts for much of the airport’s traffic, and some of its alumni go on to pilot commercial aircraft out of BTV and elsewhere. Higgins, who also flies a corporate jet for a local company, says that, even with 20 instructors, the academy is struggling to meet demand. He took a break in his office recently to talk about the nuances of airborne training.
