Signs of the Season Vermont is famous for its fall leaves, which cycle through half the hues on the color spectrum between midSeptember and mid-October. Want to go leaf peeping? Stop at farm stands, vineyards and beachy state parks along the way. Green Mountain Byway: Follow Route 100 from Waterbury to Stowe for early-season leaf peeping — higher elevations turn colors first. Hit the brakes for cider doughnuts, Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, and Stowe Village boutiques. Want more? Turn on Route 108 toward Jeffersonville for a delightfully twisty mountain pass. Mad River Byway: Alternatively, take Route 100 in the opposite direction — from Waterbury to Warren — for small-town scenery leading up to big-time ski areas Sugarbush Resort and Mad River Glen. Explore covered bridges and swimming holes as you go.

Le Vermont est célèbre pour ses feuilles d’automne, qui passent par la moitié du spectre des couleurs entre la mi-septembre et la mioctobre. Pour profiter du spectacle, voici quelques circuits hauts en couleur à parcourir près de Burlington. Faites une halte pour déguster un beignet au cidre ou une crème glacée de Ben & Jerry’s et visiter les boutiques de Stowe. Pour poursuivre l’aventure, tournez sur la route 108 vers Jeffersonville : le col de montagne en lacets vaut le détour. he Green Mountain State is a dream for fans of agritourism. Visitors who want a true taste of place will get their fill dining at the state’s farm-to-table restaurants or touring its breweries, wineries and artisan cheesemaking businesses. There’s something to please every palate. All of these activities provide a peek at farm life, but there’s an even better way to experience a working agricultural operation: Sleep there. Across the state, farms big and small open their doors to

Just seven miles south of Burlington, the Inn at Shelburne Farms (shelburnefarms.org) is Vermont’s most famous and luxurious place to ogle baby lambs, watch cheesemaking in action and drop your head onto a pillow. Sustainability is the name of the game at Perry Family Farm, where the electricity comes entirely from solar panels and guests can make use of an electric-car charging station on the premises. The farmers, James and Laura Perry, originally hail from England but moved to Vermont in 2004 for its bucolic scenery. Once here, they built the farmhouse and grew it into the operation that visitors see today. Currently — with the Perrys recently returned from a sabbatical abroad — that includes two pigs and seven ducks. The latter swim on the pond and have a penchant for joining guests under the apple trees. Visitors can head to the nearby villages of Northfield and Montpelier to shop, dine and recreate. Or, while helping tie the vines in the vineyard or feed the pigs, they can investigate the ways the Perrys have found to live closer to the Earth. “People just like to unwind here,” says James. “People come from the city … [and,] after two days, the real person comes out, right in front of your eyes.”

At Hollister Hill Farm, the list of approved activities for visiting youngsters sounds like something out of Little House on the Prairie: “Help in barn, where appropriate … Play with the barn kittens … Go sledding, play in the snow and make snow-people.” Guests can also eat big country-style breakfasts and sip on glasses of raw milk when they stay on this 205-acre property in Marshfield. There, owners Bob and Lee Light — self-identified back-to-the-landers since 1972 — aim to share the joys of the rural livelihood they’ve built. Farm life changes with the seasons, but there’s always something to watch, learn and eat at Hollister Hill. The Lights and their crew sugar in the spring, preserve fruits and veggies in the summer, and make hay in the fall. But if you just want to sit by the fire and drink Vermont beer or wine, they’re cool with that, too. À la ferme Hollister Hill, la liste d’activités approuvées pour les enfants semble tirée tout droit de La petite maison dans la prairie : « Aider dans l’étable, selon les besoins… Jouer avec les chatons dans la grange… Faire de la luge, jouer dans la neige et construire des bonshommes de neige. » Les hôtes peuvent aussi savourer de copieux petits déjeuners campagnards et boire des verres de lait cru lorsqu’ils séjournent dans cette propriété de 82 hectares à Marshfield. Les propriétaires, Bob et Lee Light, qui ont fait un retour à la terre en 1972, veulent faire goûter aux joies de la vie rurale qu’ils se sont créée. La vie dans une ferme varie selon les saisons, mais il y a toujours quelque chose à observer, à apprendre et à manger à Hollister Hill. Les Light et leur équipe font les sucres au printemps, mettent fruits et légumes en conserve l’été et font les foins à l’automne. Mais si vous préférez rester au coin du feu et siroter un verre de bière ou de vin du Vermont, ils n’y voient aucun inconvénient, bien entendu.

La durabilité est le mot d’ordre à la ferme de la famille Perry, où l’électricité provient entièrement de panneaux solaires et où les hôtes peuvent utiliser sur place une borne de recharge pour voitures électriques. Les fermiers, James et Laura Perry, sont originaires d’Angleterre, mais se sont établis au Vermont en 2004 parce qu’ils aimaient ses paysages bucoliques. Ils y ont construit une ferme qui est devenue avec le temps l’établissement que les visiteurs peuvent voir aujourd’hui. Actuellement, depuis leur retour d’une année sabbatique, les Perry ont deux cochons et sept canards qui se promènent sur l’étang et aiment bien aller retrouver les visiteurs sous les pommiers. Les hôtes peuvent aller dans les villages voisins de Northfield et de Montpelier pour faire des emplettes, souper au restaurant et s’adonner à divers loisirs. Ou bien, si vous aidez à attacher les vignes dans le vignoble ou à nourrir les cochons, vous pourrez interroger les Perry sur leur mode de vie près de la terre. « Les gens aiment bien décompresser ici, dit James. Ils arrivent de la ville… et au bout de deux jours, ils se métamorphosent, là, sous nos yeux. »

Along with milk from 1,100 other New England and New York farms, theirs creates Cabot’s award-winning cheddar cheeses, as well as butters, Greek-style yogurts, cottage cheeses and sour creams. And, since 1984, Liberty Hill has also been an inn, welcoming guests to stay in its rustic farmhouse. The 1825 structure features prettily patterned wallpaper and quilts, maple wood floors, and butternut moldings. Visitors can check out the milking room, take photos of the Holstein cows, or simply sit on a porch rocking chair and enjoy the view. Owners Beth and Bob Kennett feed their guests a filling breakfast of homemade sausages, eggs, pancakes and baked goods. Unlike many innkeepers, they serve dinner, too. Their most popular offering: chicken pot pie with carrot soufflé. Do they use Cabot butter and cheese in their meals? You betcha!

The circular Mongolian-style structures are 24 feet in diameter with bunk beds for 10 people. Each offers a woodstove, a wellequipped kitchen and a dining area with a large table. The farm itself provides plenty of ingredients to be used in yurt-cooked meals — owners Beth Whiting and Bruce Hennessey produce meat, poultry, eggs and veggies that are sold at farmers markets and used in restaurants around the state. Staying at the farm during its off-season, guests will find themselves in a winter wonderland, with plenty of opportunities for backcountry skiing and snowshoeing. Visitors may be surprised by the variety of acts that come to the Queen City — think renowned musicians, up-and-coming comics, Broadway national tours and offbeat original plays. Several downtown venues launch their seasons in September, making this the perfect time of year to catch a show. Read on to learn about four of the city’s major stages and their fall lineups.

Since 2015, the Vermont Comedy Club has been a bona fide laugh factory, hosting big names in comedy as well as supporting local standup and improvisational talent. Arrive before showtime to loosen up in the club’s spacious lounge with a cocktail and casual appetizer. Past headliners have included heavy hitters such as “Saturday Night Live” veterans Tim Meadows and Sasheer Zamata, “30 Rock” goofball Judah Friedlander, and the deadpan Brian Posehn of “The Big Bang Theory.” Who’s serving up zingers this fall? Among others, Mary Mack (October 26-28), heard on Cartoon Network’s animated “Aqua Teen Hunger Force,” and Drew Lynch (November 16-18), a Season 10 contestant on “America’s Got Talent.” Michael Ian Black, memorable from programs such as “Stella,” “The State” and Wet Hot American Summer, will entertain the crowds on November 3 and 4. Champions of Burlington’s own burgeoning scene, married club co-owners Nathan Hartswick and Natalie Miller give local comics their share of stage time. Check the calendar for weekly open mics and improv nights, as well as classes for aspiring funny people and an LGBTQLOL showcase of New England’s queer comics. The Flynn’s Main Street marquee is a beacon for fans of music, theater and dance. The theater first opened in 1930 as a venue for vaudeville and motion pictures. Now, nearly 200,000 individuals visit each year to marvel at its fully restored art-deco design and experience world-class showmanship. As the state’s premier stage, the Flynn nabs some big names. On October 6, top-ranking trumpeter Wynton Marsalis fronts the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra in the 1,411-seat MainStage auditorium. On November 2, cellist Yo-Yo Ma and his longtime collaborator, pianist Kathryn Stott, join forces for a classical concert. Broadway buffs can get their kicks with full-stage productions of Jersey Boys (October 3 and 4) and Kinky Boots (December 5 and 6). The FlynnSpace, an adjacent 180-seat black box, is known for more eclectic acts. Here, Vermont ensemble TURNmusic give chamber works a unique twist on September 16. Comedian Adrienne Truscott serves up her one-woman show Asking for It (November 2 and 3), and Detroit theater company Hinterlands explores art and politics in The Radicalization Process (November 10 and 11). Another highlight is Fun Home (October 4 through 29), a Tony Awardwinning musical just off its Broadway National Tour. Based on the graphic memoir by Vermonter Alison Bechdel, the show is produced by local theater company Vermont Stage.

The University of Vermont Lane Series UVM Recital Hall, 384 S. Prospect St., uvm.edu/laneseries The 300-seat UVM Recital Hall is one of the best rooms, acoustics-wise, in the state. Good thing — the university’s Lane Series is known for its lineup of classical, world, jazz and traditional music. Established in 1955, the series engages students and the public through performances, master classes, workshops and lectures. The upcoming season promises plenty of musical globe-trotting. Renowned violinist Jolente De Maeyer and pianist Nikolaas Kende band together on September 29 for “An Evening in Vienna.” On October 7, Joan Soriano combines Afro-Caribbean rhythms with steel guitar, and the five-woman a cappella choral group Nobuntu (October 27) lift their voices in traditional Zimbabwean harmonies. As it does every four years, this year’s Lane Series roster includes the top three instrumentalists from the quadrennial Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Nineteen-year-old bronze medalist Daniel Hsu tickles the ivories on September 22 before silver medalist and fellow American 16 BTVMAGAZINE.COM

Kenneth Broberg takes the stage for a November 17 recital. To hear gold medalist Yekwon Sunwoo of South Korea, classical connoisseurs will have to wait until February 23.

The 65-seat black-box theater in Burlington’s Old North End hosts a variety of alternative and eccentric displays of artistry. As actor and volunteer board member Chris Caswell says, “We want to support [thespians] making big artistic choices.” Since 2010, the small space has treated theatergoers to dramatic readings by poets and playwrights. It has shown a one-man performance of W. Somerset Maugham’s Rain by Vermont’s Bald Mountain Theater as well as knee-slapping skits by local comedy troupe Stealing From Work. Last December, area writers and theater artists took aim at a chaotic year in the political cabaret Wrecking Ball: F**k 2016. As the name implies, some Off Center shows are kid-friendly, while others are better suited for adults. If in doubt, check the venue’s website for descriptions, and keep your eyes peeled for newly added events while you’re at it. A highlight of the fall season is the annual Burlington Fringe Festival. Entering its fifth year, the October 12 to 15 event features four nights of original theater from Vermont and beyond. More than 40 performers will step into the spotlight with works of dance, comedy, drama, poetry, puppetry and musical theater. This peak near Waterbury Center promises a lovely half-day romp featuring forest, cascading water and rock-wall scrambles. The trip up and down the west side of the 3,539-foot mountain runs about four miles, and the bald summit affords views of neighboring ranges. (The trailhead is located along Route 108 in Jeffersonville, which closes as soon as the snow flies.) This flat, paved route on an old railroad bed parallels Lake Champlain for eight miles from Oakledge Park to the Winooski River, making it one of the city’s best spots for killer views. Some 150,000 people use the path each year — so go early in the morning to catch a bit more solitude. East Charlotte Tractor Parade

Vermont is known for its strong agricultural heritage, and those farming traditions are never more apparent than at the annual East Charlotte Tractor Parade. As many as 200 modern and antique tractors — some dating back to the 1930s — chug along Spear Street just 25 minutes south of downtown Burlington in a grand procession signaling the end of harvest season. The rigs travel here from all over the state — some even ferry across Lake Champlain from New York. Now in its 17th year, the parade has grown to include an open-air market with food and crafts, kids’ games, and hayride shuttles.

Autumn in Vermont means apples: Paula Reds, McIntoshes, Cortlands, Empires, Honeycrisps, and so many more heirloom and popular varieties. In nearby Shelburne Orchards, the pickings are good — and the seasonal events are even better. Head to the lake-adjacent orchard for its Annual Pie Fest (September 24), a baking contest complete with pie eating and live music. Taiko in the Orchard (September 30) attracts beat-keepers from across the U.S. and Canada for a daylong drum circle. Truckload and Hard Cider Weekend (October 14 and 15) allows visitors to fill their cars with as many dropped apples as they can and their carboys with a special blend of apple cider. On that weekend, Burlington’s Citizen Cider will dole out hard cider samples and hard-earned cider-making wisdom. Our own word to the wise: Don’t leave without sampling a cider doughnut from the Orchard Café.

urlington City Arts curates exhibits in three areas of the airport: the Skyway, the area above the escalator and the walls facing security for Gates 1 through 8. Whether you’ve arrived early for a flight or are waiting to pick up passengers, do take the time to look around! In September, the “Faces of the Family Room” exhibit appears in the Skyway, featuring Steve Mann’s portraits of the diverse families who make use of the programs at Burlington’s Janet S. Munt Family Room. Greg Danford’s landscape photography hangs in the Gates, providing a peek into his decades of world travel. (“The best investment you can make in your photography is plane tickets,” he observes.) In October and November, the Skyway features painter Michelle Turbide’s mysterious abstract dreamscapes. “It is really not about what you see in the piece, but about what you feel in the witnessing,” the artist writes. Ken Russack’s plein-air paintings of both urban and pastoral scenes can be viewed in the Gates. All three months, Mary Hill’s abstract paintings and textile designs — which she calls “an adventure into the unknown” — are mounted by the escalator. If you’re going up, be sure to turn around and look at the wall behind you. But watch your step! All of these artists live or have spent time in Vermont. hirley Chevalier dips a wing on her 1959 American Champion and takes the single-engine plane into a sharp banking dive toward a grassy airstrip on Lake Champlain’s Savage Island. As the tiny two-seater approaches the private island, halfway between New York and Vermont, it shudders from a sudden burst of turbulence. Chevalier pulls up on the stick and aborts the landing. A second, equally bumpy attempt is also aborted. “Well, that was kind of squirrelly,” Chevalier announces matter-offactly as we regain altitude and head back toward Burlington International Airport, where her business, FliRite Aviation, is headquartered. You don’t log 40 years without incident as a professional pilot without having a healthy respect for dangerous wind conditions, SHIRLEY especially when the landing is unnecessary. As the bumper sticker in her office says, “The CHEVALIER difference between young pilots and old Pilot/pilote, FliRite pilots: Young pilots have fast reflexes. Old Aviation, flirite.com pilots don’t need them.” At 75, Chevalier has spent four decades as a professional pilot and aerial photographer — but the Vermont native still exudes a childlike joy of flying. That wasn’t always the case. In 1978, a commercial pilot invited Chevalier, who was then working for an airport car-rental company, on a short “freight hop” to Portland, Maine. “So off we go into the wild blue yonder, and he really tried to impress me,” Chevalier recalls. “And he did, because when we got to about 3,000 feet, he shut the engine off. I’ve never been so frightened in my life.” Upon landing, Chevalier slammed the plane door and announced, “I will never get in one of those damn things again as long as I live!” But she eventually overcame her fear of flying and moved from rental cars to working as an airport tour guide to earning her pilot’s license. In 1984, Chevalier bought her current airplane for just $7,000 and launched FliRite Aviation to do aerial photography. The plane has since been outfitted with vortex generators that lower the plane’s stall speed, allowing her to fly low and slow to capture hard-to-get images.

Today, virtually everyone at the airport recognizes Chevalier and her immaculate red-and-white aircraft adorned in hearts. As she puts it, “If it’s going to be a lady’s airplane, it should look like a lady’s airplane.” On her approach into BTV, Chevalier radios the traffic control tower that she plans to do a flyby over the nearby Costco to photograph some new construction for a client. As she circles overhead, Chevalier opens the window, pokes her camera outside and, with the plane’s joystick between her knees, fires off a dozen shots. After Chevalier touches down on the runway, the air traffic controller says to her, in a rare moment of radio banter, “Champ 99 Echo, after two years in Burlington, I finally know where Costco is now.” Chevalier smiles as she taxis back to her hangar. “Those guys just think I’m the cat’s meow!” When did you get into aerial photography? Right off. I always loved photography. Then, when I got up [in the air], I was like, Oh, my God! This is way better than shooting down there! You see so much more. I just loved it. So I started taking pictures — not commercially at first, just for family and friends. Then the Champ [her ’59 American Champion] went in for a complete restoration and came back. I said, “OK. That just cost me a lot of money. I need work.” How do you fly and take pictures at the same time? When I first started, I tried everything: foam, beanbags, hanging the camera and using a mechanical arm to hold it. Now I just put the strap over my neck the old-fashioned way and open the window. What’s the most interesting project you’ve worked on? Probably the cigarette-boat races on Lake Champlain. That is the most exciting thing. Some of those boats are doing 100 miles per hour. I do 90, and it really ticks me off when a boat passes me!

Tout en décrivant des cercles au-dessus du bâtiment, Shirley ouvre la fenêtre, sort son appareil photo et, le manche à balai entre les genoux, prend une dizaine de clichés. De retour sur le plancher des vaches, elle reçoit un appel du contrôleur aérien qui, dans un rare élan d’humour, lui déclare : « Champ 99 Echo; après deux ans à Burlington, je sais enfin où se trouve le Costco! ». Shirley Chevalier sourit tout en ramenant son appareil au hangar. « Je pense qu’ils m’admirent vraiment! » D’où vous est venue l’idée de faire de la photo aérienne? J’ai toujours aimé la photographie. Le jour où je me suis envolée pour la première fois, je me suis dit : Oh mon Dieu! C’est beaucoup mieux en haut qu’en bas! On voit tellement plus de choses. J’ai tout de suite adoré cela. J’ai donc commencé à faire de la photo, pas commercialement, mais pour ma famille et mes amis. Puis, le Champ [son American Champion 1959] a subi une restauration complète, et cela m’a coûté tellement cher que j’ai décidé de rentabiliser mon investissement. » Comment faites-vous pour voler et prendre des photos en même temps? À mes débuts, j’ai tout essayé : coussin en mousse, beanbag, bras mécanique pour tenir l’appareil photo, etc. Maintenant, je porte tout simplement mon appareil photo en bandoulière, à l’ancienne, et j’ouvre la fenêtre. Quel a été le sujet le plus intéressant à photographier? Probablement les courses de bateaux ultrarapides sur le lac Champlain. C’est vraiment impressionnant. Certains de ces bateaux peuvent filer jusqu’à 160 km/h. Moi, je peux atteindre environ 145 km/h, et ça m’agace vraiment quand un bateau me dépasse!

What’s the most interesting place you’ve flown? Every single time I go up, it’s interesting. It’s always different. Nothing is normal; nothing is average — every time for 40 years. But I think the most fun I’ve had in an airplane is in a seaplane. I just love those to death. It’s a hoot!
