A lot of changes have been happening at the Burlington International Airport over the past few months. We’re thrilled to announce that Delta Airlines will begin nonstop service to Atlanta on June 7. This will give BTV travelers access to the world’s busiest hub, with connection opportunities to hundreds of destinations across the southeastern U.S., Latin America and beyond. In addition, the Skinny Pancake is opening this spring in the postsecurity concourses of the terminal, providing travelers with a wide array of healthy food and beverage options — much of it sourced right here in Vermont. You may also notice some other subtle changes to the terminal building, such as the opening of the North Concourse walkway and the business center located in baggage claim. D
o you love skiing? And cycling? Then why not put the two together? With Vermont’s abundance of unique alpine and Nordic ski areas, its quiet back roads and an extensive network of mountain bike trails, the state is a true gem for skiers and cyclists. And while it’s fun in early spring to set off on an afternoon bike ride after a morning ski, it’s an even greater adventure to take it to another level: going skiing by bicycle. Every season, we look forward to a pedal-powered skiing adventure as a springtime rite of passage in Vermont. We usually wait until late March or early April, when snowy roads, bitterly cold weather and limited daylight are behind us. It’s a simple and beautiful concept: We get to enjoy our first good bike ride of the season, we spend much of the day skiing and we leave the car behind. “It’s refreshing to experience so much time in the mountains — on skis, on your bike — under your own power,” says Vermonter Forrest Twombly, recalling just such a day of backcountry riding and skiing last spring. “It’s also incredibly satisfying,” he adds. It starts with little more than a fair-weather forecast — and a mighty breakfast. Our favorite: homemade waffles with lots of wild berries, some bacon and fresh Vermont maple syrup, and hot, steel-

Et s’il est formidable, au début du printemps, de pouvoir faire une balade à vélo l’après-midi après avoir fait du ski le matin, il est encore plus stimulant de carrément pouvoir aller skier à vélo. Chaque saison, nous nous réjouissons à l’idée de partir faire du ski à vélo; c’est en quelque sorte un rite de passage printanier au Vermont. Nous attendons habituellement la fin mars ou le début avril, lorsque les routes enneigées, le froid cinglant et les journées trop courtes sont derrière nous. C’est un joli concept, tout simple : nous faisons notre première sortie de vélo de la saison, passons une bonne partie de la journée à skier et n’avons pas à prendre notre voiture. « C’est régénérant de passer autant de temps dans les montagnes – à ski et à vélo – en ne comptant que sur soi-même », dit le Vermontois Forrest Twombly, qui raconte une journée de vélo et de ski au printemps dernier. « C’est également une immense satisfaction. »

cut oats on the side. With bellies full, we prep our bikes, load our ski gear — strapping skis, boots and packs onto a simple bike trailer (we suggest a BOB), or to cargo racks on the bike — and pedal away. If there is still a good snow pack in early spring at lower elevations, various options for Nordic and backcountry skiing exist in many parts of Vermont. Even open fields and farms can be a great alternative when we’ve only got a couple of hours. It’s hard to beat rolling down the hill on our bikes, dropping off our empty milk bottles at our neighbor’s farm and skiing a few runs with our backcountry gear in a scenic, sloping pasture. If we’ve got a full day free, we head for the big mountains. Both Mad River Glen and Sugarbush ski areas are just a little more than an hour’s bike ride from our home. Several Nordic ski centers and backcountry trailheads are also reachable within that time frame. Midsummer, when we’re in peak cycling shape, this ride is like a walk in the park. In early spring — and towing 30 pounds of ski gear — it requires a bit more effort. Still, as long as we pace ourselves and get an early start, we can enjoy a day of skiing with friends and still have time and energy for the trip home. (Of course, if you’re a visitor, you could also do this from any number of Vermont B&Bs, or pile ski gear and bikes into your car and start from any nearby village.) Which is more fun — the skiing or the cycling? “I guess it depends on how good the skiing is,” Twombly equivocates. We’d say both. After skiing, we can only hope that sunshine will prevail as we coast into the valley below, bound for home. We might stop for a bite eat or a splash in the river, or we simply keep it rolling in order to catch the sunset from home — where our car is parked and a warm fire, a hot bath and a tasty bowl of soup awaits.

Notre menu préféré : gaufres maison aux petits fruits, bacon et sirop d’érable local de l’année, accompagnés d’un bol de gruau bien chaud. Une fois l’estomac bien rempli, nous préparons nos vélos, installons notre équipement de ski – en fixant les skis, les bottes et les sacs sur une simple remorque de vélo (de type « BOB ») ou sur des porte-bagages – et… en route! S’il reste encore de la neige en altitude au début du printemps, beaucoup d’options s’offrent à nous dans diverses régions du Vermont pour faire du ski de fond ou du ski alpin. Même les grands champs et les domaines agricoles peuvent convenir lorsque nous ne disposons que d’une heure ou deux. Il est difficile de trouver mieux que de faire une belle descente à vélo, laisser ses bouteilles de lait vides à la ferme de son voisin et faire une belle balade à ski dans l’arrière-pays. Si nous avons toute la journée, nous allons jusqu’aux montagnes plus hautes. Mad River Glen et Sugarbush sont à un peu plus d’une heure de vélo de chez nous. Plusieurs centres de ski de fond et départs de sentiers vers l’arrière-pays sont également à cette distance. Au milieu de l’été, lorsque nous sommes au meilleur de notre forme, c’est un trajet ultrafacile. Au début du printemps, avec près de 15 kilos d’équipement de ski à traîner, c’est un peu plus exigeant. Cela dit, si nous ne cherchons pas à aller trop vite et que nous partons de bonne heure, nous pouvons faire une journée de ski avec des amis et avoir assez de temps et d’énergie pour faire le trajet de retour à la maison. (Évidemment, si vous venez d’ailleurs, vous pouvez vivre la même expérience à partir d’un B&B du Vermont ou encore emporter votre équipement de ski et votre vélo dans la voiture et prendre le départ dans un village voisin.) Qu’est-ce qui est le plus agréable, le ski ou le vélo? « Je crois que ça dépend des conditions de ski », répond Forrest Twombly. Nous, nous dirions… les deux. Après le ski, il reste à espérer que le soleil brille pendant que nous redescendons dans la vallée, vers chez nous. Nous nous arrêtons parfois pour prendre une bouchée ou sauter dans la rivière. Il nous arrive aussi de rouler sans faire de pause pour réussir à attraper le coucher de soleil à la maison, où nous attendent un feu de cheminée, un bain chaud et un bon bol de soupe. Et notre voiture est toujours à sa place.

rêpes, anyone? Dining at the airport gets a big upgrade this spring, as the Skinny Pancake opens two brand-new restaurants — one in each terminal. In addition, the owners have installed a cozy, barn-board-walled version of their other Burlington brand, the Chubby Muffin, near the front entrance. Think great coffee and tasty snacks made from fresh, locally grown ingredients. In the postsecurity restaurants, passengers can sit down and enjoy a substantial breakfast, lunch or dinner built around a housemade crêpe, perhaps downing it with Vermont-made beer or cider. When airport officials solicited proposals from restaurateurs seeking to provide high-quality food to passengers, “the choice was hands down Skinny Pancake,” says interim director of aviation Gene Richards. “They did the best job researching the opportunity, and they understood our business.” He adds, “We liked the healthier food, the different type of venue and that the restaurant captures what Burlington, Vermont, is all about.” Richards is talking about the burgeoning entrepreneurial foodie movement in the Green Mountain State. Travelers in a hurry may not notice that the Skinny Pancake and Chubby Muffin put more than food on the table. Brothers Benjy and Jonny Adler — who started their business in 2003 with a food cart on Burlington’s Church Street Marketplace — like to feed people, but they
We wanted to be an ambassador of local food and its centrality in Vermont culture. Benjy ADler also have a more ambitious goal in mind. “The Skinny Pancake,” reads a statement on their website, “is on a mission to change the world by building a safer, healthier and more delicious food shed while creating everyday enjoyment that is fun and affordable.” Like many Vermont restaurateurs, the Adlers are dedicated to the localvore movement, which aims to obtain food from as nearby as possible — ideally, it should be grown or raised no more than 100 miles from the restaurant. The idea is not only to consume fresher and healthier foods but to support the economic infrastructure of local producers, and to help the environment by reducing long-distance food transport. The North Country climate can’t give us everything, of course — and who wants to do without coffee, chocolate, sugar or lemons? But the number of foods that do originate in Vermont goes way beyond cheese, maple syrup and Ben & Jerry’s. The Adler brothers have created one of Vermont’s most successful edible enterprises. After four years with a food cart, they built their first restaurant on Burlington’s waterfront; they added a second Skinny Pancake in Montpelier in 2009. The following year, the Chubby

Nous favorisions les aliments santé et souhaitions un style d’établissement différent, capable de véhiculer les valeurs de Burlington, au Vermont. » Gene Richards parle en fait du mouvement entrepreneurial naissant du secteur alimentaire dans l’État des Montagnes vertes. Les voyageurs pressés ne remarquent peut-être pas que Skinny Pancake et Chubby Muffin leurs proposent bien plus que de simples aliments. Cette crêpe contient non pas du fromage, mais du caramel de lait de chèvre de la ferme Fat Toad et des pommes du Vermont. Quant aux crêpes salées, le menu en propose une très grande variété, des plus légères, comme la crêpe aux épinards et au fromage feta, aux plus élaborées, comme la Cattle Rancher, qui est fourrée à la pointe de surlonge de la ferme Boyden (où le bétail est engraissé à l’herbe), aux oignons caramélisés, au fromage cheddar Cabot et à la crème sure au chipotle. Des crêpes végétariennes, végétaliennes et sans gluten sont également offertes. Si le bar propose des bières microbrassées, des vins et même des spiritueux du Vermont, l’amateur de Budweiser ne sera pas déçu. « Nous avons évolué, dit Benjy. ow many species of living things exist in Vermont? Ecologists estimate between 26,000 and 45,000, and that’s not counting invisible-to-the-naked-eye bacteria and viruses. But no one really knows for sure how many plants and animals share the state with us humans. The Vermont Atlas of Life project aims to find out. And you can help: During your next walk in the woods, or bird watching in your own backyard, you could contribute to an invaluable research database that will be used to serve the well-being of the state and its environment for years to come. Earlier this year, the Vermont Center for Ecostudies (VCE), located in Norwich, launched the Vermont Atlas of Life project to foster a greater understanding of every existing species in the state. Plants, fungi, insects, arachnids, mollusks, reptiles, amphibians, fish, mammals, birds and even protozoa are all being carefully photographed by Vermont’s residents and visitors. Anyone can participate by submitting photos or adding their two cents on the identity of a species submitted by someone else. Crowdsourcing such information, says Kent McFarland — the project’s creator and a conservation biologist at the VCE — is possible today thanks to the technology of smartphones and apps like iNaturalist. This app allows you to upload a photo of an interesting species you spot while walking your dog, taking a hike or digging in your garden. Then you can attempt to identify it yourself or rely on the help of other participants in the project to determine what you’ve seen. While iNaturalist includes similar projects taking place all over the world, Vermont and Ohio are the only two states so far that have set out to document every living species within their borders. One of iNaturalist’s most passionate participants in Vermont, Montpelierbased ecologist Charlie Hohn, has contributed more than 2500 photographs, many of which he posted long before McFarland launched

Kent MCFArlAnD the Vermont Atlas project. “We have some amount of info about rare plants or species that are ecologically useful,” Hohn explains, “but for many species, even common or invasive ones, we know very little about their range across the state. “We know even less about the past,” Hohn continues. “Did you know some habitats and natural communities in California were literally destroyed before people had time to figure out what they were? By adding information to iNaturalist and the Vermont Atlas of Life project, I am adding to a global pool of knowledge that could be helpful in the future.” This type of research isn’t new to McFarland. His Vermont eBird project has documented more than two million birds in the state over the past two years, and continues to thrive. “The West Nile virus is a good example of what this kind of crowdsourcing research can do,” McFarland says. “When the virus was first introduced in the U.S., it was killing a lot of crows and chickadees; the eBird project was used on a national scale to help see where the biggest drops in species were taking place.” While it’s important to observe potentially threatened species, the discovery of a new one is even more exciting, and a realistic goal, according to McFarland. Other conclusions that might emerge from the developing data include the growth rate of a certain type of tree or flower and a better understanding of the spread or specific locations of a particular species in the state. The potential uses for information submitted to the Vermont Atlas of Life are almost endless. When participants submit their observations through iNaturalist, “there’s a lot of interesting conversation that takes place,” McFarland says. For example, short-tail and long-tail weasels are almost identical, but discussions among observers have helped identify significant differences between the two breeds. “Someone entered a photo of a dragonfly they hit with their car,” McFarland notes, offering another example. “One of the dragonfly experts in the state saw the posting on iNaturalist and identified it as a species of dragonfly that’s actually very rare. With the location automatically tagged on the photo through the program, they were also able to discover a new breeding site.” While anyone can participate, a photograph is essential if you want your observation to be identified by another participant. As soon as someone else concurs with your identification, the data qualify as “research grade” — that is, more reputable. “If people disagree with your identification, then you can discuss it or realize it is wrong and change it,” says Hohn. “If I don’t know what something is, but I’ve taken a good photo, someone else may be able to identify it for me.” This project, Hohn says, has turned his routine hikes into “treasure hunts.” As the Vermont Atlas of Life takes off, McFarland is developing an encyclopedia of every living thing with proper names, in the form of a “taxonomic tree of life.” Whether or not you contribute observations yourself, you can visit the real-time, constantly evolving website to follow discoveries as they are posted. “We have the opportunity to log everything in nature and what it looks like now, on a massive scale,” McFarland says. “It’s an unprecedented baseline of a place we all love now.” The Vermont Center for Ecostudies, Norwich, 802-649-1431. vtecostudies.org/atlas; inaturalist.org

Les données recueillies pourront donner lieu à d’autres conclusions, notamment sur le taux de croissance d’un certain type d’arbre ou de fleur, et à une meilleure compréhension de la dissémination ou des emplacements précis d’une espèce particulière dans l’État. Les usages possibles des informations soumises au projet Vermont Atlas of Life sont pratiquement infinis. M. McFarland raconte que les observations des participants qui collaborent à l’aide de iNaturalist donnent lieu à des conversations très intéressantes. « Les hermines et les belettes à longue queue, par exemple, sont presque identiques, mais les échanges entre observateurs ont permis de repérer des différences considérables entre les deux espèces. « Quelqu’un a transmis une photo d’une libellule qu’il avait frappée avec sa voiture, poursuit-il. Dès qu’une autre personne est d’accord avec votre identification, l’information est considérée « de qualité recherche », donc plus fiable. « Si quelqu’un conteste votre identification, dit M. Hohn, alors vous pouvez en discuter ou bien constater que vous aviez tort et changer le nom. Si je ne connais pas une espèce, mais que j’ai une bonne photo, il se peut qu’une autre personne ait la réponse. » Pour lui, ce projet a transformé ses randonnées habituelles en « chasses au trésor ». Avec le projet Vermont Atlas of Life, Kent McFarland élabore une encyclopédie d’êtres vivants, avec les noms justes, sous la forme d’un « arbre de vie taxonomique ». The saucy crew behind Burlington’s Spielpalast Cabaret has burlesque entertainment down to an art. Their risqué business, which has toured as far away as the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland, ushers audience members inside a nightclub straight out of 1930s Berlin. What follows is a wanton whirlwind of original song, dance and satire — courtesy of a master of ceremonies, a dozen dancing ladies, cigar girls and other steamy characters with detailed fictional biographies. Top it off with a swinging house orchestra, scandalous costumes and a respect for history, and you have an avantgarde spectacle that pays homage to show biz with both wit and brains.

The Church Street Marketplace, Battery Park, Oakledge Park and Waterfront Park are the best spots to see the “show.”

Compagnie Marie Chouinard Since her 1978 debut, Montréal choreographer Marie Chouinard has gained a reputation as the “bad girl” of dance. Though her performances are often set to classical masterworks and draw on ballet positions, you won’t see her company members leaping daintily in traditional leotards and tights. Chouinard’s dancers have been known to growl, crack eggs onstage and display partial nudity. On its third visit to Burlington’s Flynn Center for the Performing Arts, the company presents two of Chouinard’s most respected works: Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring) & Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune (Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun). Filled with otherworldly beauty and a touch of humor, the daring pieces celebrate the might and motion of the human body.

urlington City Arts curates art exhibits at the airport in three areas: the Skyway, the area above the escalator and the walls facing security for Gates 1-8. Whether you’ve arrived early for a flight or are waiting to pick up passengers, do take the time to have a look around! In March and April at Gates 1-8, you’ll see giclée prints of original watercolor and airbrush paintings by Kevin Ruelle (right), made to look like vintage Vermont posters. Along the Skyway are Tod Gunter’s aviation-themed illustrations (above). Galen Cheney’s large-scale abstraction, a threepart, oil-on-panel work titled “Via della Spada,” will be installed above the escalator through May (below). Ruelle is an eclectic artist, creating everything from landscape paintings on canvas to architectural drawings to cartoons. He lives in Burlington. Gunter, whose highly realistic, digitally created profiles of vintage aircraft are quite apropos at the airport, is an illustrator and industrial designer living in Stowe. Cheney, whose recent paintings are inspired by graffiti and urban culture, is a Middlesex resident. Please enjoy examples of their work here and on their individual websites.

f you passed Heather Kendrew in the hallway, your fleeting impression of her would probably be all wrong. You likely wouldn’t think biker chick. You’d probably put her age at younger than her 41 years. And, despite the airport ID tag around her neck, you would never guess that this calm, quiet woman with the warm smile has a hardcore job: She’s director of maintenance, engineering and environmental compliance at the Burlington International Airport. Raised in Essex, Vt., Kendrew attended the University of Vermont — majoring in civil engineering — and interned at the airport while she was in college. Back then, she helped with “whatever came up,” she says. Her job now is similar, but with a lot more responsibility. Kendrew, sitting in her newly painted and still undecorated office for a recent interview, explains. When did you start working at the airport? In 1998 I started here as a contractor, part time in engineering and environmental services. I helped with reporting and projects. That grew into full-time management of engineering. What did you do? I hired other consultants to design projects — for example, taxiways or buildings — then handled management of projects such as the parking garage. Bob [McEwing, director of planning and development] and I worked on the coordination of services. In 2007 I took over maintenance — that’s

Originaire d’Essex, au Vermont, Heather est diplômée en génie civil de l’Université du Vermont (UVM) et elle a fait un stage à l’aéroport pendant ses études. À l’époque, elle faisait un peu de tout. all of the people who take care of the airport, from mowing the grass to plowing the runways. The employees are the heart and soul of the airport; without them you couldn’t do anything. How many people do you oversee now? Eighteen. I have an assistant director of maintenance, Rick Brown. When he came, he took over the day-to-day schedule, and I could focus on long-range and overall functioning. He’s been absolutely wonderful. Tell me a little about your background. I know you grew up here and went to UVM. I married my high school sweetheart, Derrick Kendrew. We decided to stay in the area so our children would be close to their grandparents. After I graduated college, I worked for the state of Vermont. I wrote air-pollution-control permits for the Agency of Natural Resources. You have two kids? Yes, a daughter, 19, and a son, 13. So you obviously made your way back to the airport. Can you describe what a day here looks like for you? No. An employee could come in asking about paint color or redesigning the bathrooms; it’s looking at papers that have to be applied to the city, or taking calls from other airports on various issues. Every day is different. There’s crossover with other airports? Yes, there are email communications with other small, regional airports on such issues as water quality or pavement cracking. Occasionally there are conference calls on, say, storm-water runoff. That’s a big problem at airports. What are you excited about at the airport? There’s a new service direct to Atlanta on Delta, a 150-passenger plane. On the ground, I understand you’re a motorcycle rider? It’s my husband’s hobby. I was not a motorcycle enthusiast, but it’s become something we do in the summer. We had a deal: I wanted a horse and he wanted a Harley. So you have a horse? I do. His name is Sergeant Pepper. He’s very happy in his pasture. Where do you live now? We have 10 acres in Westford. We have a horse, two dogs, a bunny and a whole bunch of chickens. What is your biggest personal challenge at the airport? The finances. We’re working together to keep the costs down, and to prioritize expenditures.

Parfois, nous organisons des conférences téléphoniques, sur l’écoulement des eaux de ruissellement, par exemple. C’est un gros problème pour les aéroports. Qu’est-ce qui vous enthousiasme en ce moment? Nous avons une nouvelle liaison directe pour Atlanta avec Delta, sur un appareil de 150 passagers. Si mes renseignements sont exacts, vous faites de la moto? C’est le passe-temps de mon mari. Je n’étais pas une passionnée de moto au départ, mais c’est devenu une de nos activités estivales.
