he Shelburne Museum is known and admired worldwide for its immense collection of folk art, objects, tools and other artifacts of 19th-century New England. Last August, the museum finished construction on a new, state-of-the-art addition to its nearly 40 historical buildings: the Pizzagalli Center for Art and Education, located at the crest of its gently sloping campus. For the first time since Electra Havemeyer Webb founded the museum in 1947, it now has a venue that is open year round. The building itself is a beauty: sleek, minimalist architecture constructed of local stone and lumber and outfitted with tall windows that afford views of the surrounding grounds and passersby on Route 7. But more relevant to visitors is what’s inside. In addition to classrooms offering art instruction, talks and other activities, capacious galleries on two floors present contemporary art — that is, work that’s au courant but in line with the legacy of fine crafts represented by the museum’s collection. Currently in the upstairs gallery, “John Bisbee: New Blooms” consists of sculptures and installations that the Maine sculptor has made exclusively from foot-long nails. Yes, nails. Bright Common nails, to be precise. But don’t let the simplicity of the medium fool you; Bisbee has crafted eloquent, delicate-looking wall sculptures with a floral motif, as well as massive, stand-alone pieces. In one corner of the room, a clump of individually worked “stems” form what the artist aptly calls a “Thicket.” Collectively, these works are both elegant and playful. Bisbee’s extraordinary workmanship disguises the equally impressive amount of labor involved. As museum director Thomas Denenberg puts it, “You come up with some simple idea — bending a nail — and then you bend 10,000 of them.” In the downstairs gallery, Shelburne Museum curator of

Outre les classes où sont offerts des ateliers d’art, des conférences et d’autres activités, de vastes galeries sur deux étages présentent des œuvres d’art contemporain – sans rupture avec la tradition des métiers d’art qui caractérise la collection du musée. Actuellement, dans la galerie de l’étage supérieur, l’exposition « John Bisbee: New Blooms » regroupe des sculptures et des installations que cet artiste du Maine a construites en utilisant uniquement des clous de 30 centimètres. Vous avez bien lu, des clous. Des clous communs au fini brillant, pour être plus précis. À l’aide de cet objet en apparence tout simple, John Bisbee a créé de délicates sculptures murales à motif floral d’une grande éloquence, ainsi que des œuvres autonomes massives. Dans un coin de la salle, des tiges individuelles forment un bouquet que l’artiste a judicieusement nommé « Thicket ». Intended to show a spectrum of glassworks over two centuries, the show features items from the permanent collection, ranging from dining vessels to medical instruments to clothing with glass beads. These are juxtaposed with contemporary pieces from Vermont and national artists that range from the decorative to the phantasmagoric. Think glass noisemaker, glass skeletons, glass furniture and sculptures literally blown out of proportion. In other words, don’t expect to find cups and bowls at “Supercool Glass.” Expect to be amazed.

Spring Exhibits L’extraordinaire finesse d’exécution de John Bisbee fait oublier l’imposant travail nécessaire pour parvenir à pareil résultat. n late April, Vermont emerges from its long winter into a riot of daffodils, tulips, sunshine and — food? Yes. Vermont Restaurant Week, presented by Seven Days and Vermont Federal Credit Union, is the state’s largest culinary event and makes every spring über-delicious. Starting April 25, chefs at more than 100 restaurants will roll out three-course, prix-fixe menus (at $15, $25 or $35 price points) that draw on ramps, rhubarb and other seasonal goodies to celebrate the beginning of this short but glorious growing season. The 10-day foodie fest spans the state from the Champlain Islands to the Upper Valley, and includes participants as diverse as bakeries, bars and some of the most sought-after restaurants in the state (including Hen of the Wood, where the reservation book fills up fast). So what’s cookin’ in 2014? A smorgasbord of dishes. Here’s a taste:

Juniper When Hotel Vermont opened last year, Burlington not only gained its first boutique hotel but also a pair of first-class restaurants. Juniper is the spacious, Scandinavian-style lounge and restaurant in the hotel’s lobby, and chef Douglas Paine is serious about local bounty. Expect him to be wooing his Restaurant Week guests with anything from buttermilk fried chicken with preserved-lemon-honey mustard to roasted quail with caramelized apples, turnips, kale and hazelnut gastrique. 41 Cherry St., Burlington, 651-0080 Sherpa Kitchen A few blocks away, Burlington’s Sherpa Kitchen offers a cozier, more exotic experience. This mecca to Himalayan cuisine is beloved by locals for its momos — Tibetan dumplings stuffed with beef, chicken or veggies — and fragrant curries. Owners Lakpa Lama and Doma Sherpa will likely offer both during Restaurant Week, as well as plates of gulab jamun, or milk donuts with guar syrup. We’ll wash them down with mango lassis. 119 College St., Burlington, 881-0550 Kitchen Table Bistro This elegant locavore restaurant in a historic brick home sits a stone’s throw from the interstate and next to a windswept field near Richmond, and foodie fans drive from all over to dine here. Chef-owner Steve Atkins has earned several James Beard Award nominations, and has tight connections with local farmers. In 2013, he wowed us with local steak tartare and ricotta gnocchi with ramp pesto; we can’t wait to see what he’ll conjure in the kitchen this spring. 1840 W. Main St., Richmond, 434-8686 Michael’s on the Hill This romantic, fine-dining restaurant near Stowe is blessed with great views and Alpine roots. Chef-owner Michael Kloeti is all about Swiss classics composed with local ingredients, from the beef he air dries for bündnerfleisch (which he served

If you just happen to be in the state between April 25 and May 4, you’re a lucky duck. But with all those special meals to choose from, it’s worth planning a special trip. Event-Hopping The mainstay of Restaurant Week may be unbridled gluttony, but a diverse lineup of special events offers entertainment and intellectual nourishment, too. From one-upping contestants at the Culinary Pub Quiz (a popular event that sells out early), to spirited food-anddrink competitions, to a “foodie salon” featuring conversations with chefs and farmers — there’s more to Restaurant Week than what’s on your plate. Here’s a rundown of this year’s Vermont Restaurant Week events that were scheduled as of press time. Thursday, April 24: Sweet Start Smackdown at Higher Ground in Burlington Dessert comes first at this Restaurant Week-eve kick-off battle of pastry chefs from around the state, who compete while foodies eat. Scores from celebrity judges are combined with audience votes to name a winner. Expect to consume lots of mousse, ganache and cake. Sunday, April 27: Foodie Flick at Waitsfield’s Big Picture Theater and Café Lovers of both food and film flock to this annual matinee screening of a classic foodie flick; previous selections have included Jiro Dreams of Sushi and Big Night. Tuesday, April 29: Culinary Pub Quiz at Nectar’s in Burlington Trivia geeks compete for prizes during seven raucous rounds of fun food facts, with the winner crowned by Seven Days food writer Alice Levitt. Saturday, May 2: Bartender Brawl at Red Square in Burlington The annual closing party at Burlington’s Red Square is festive and sometimes heated, and usually involves a face-off among readersubmitted drinks or dishes (such as those for sangria or salsa in previous years). This year, local bartenders will be mixing up competing cocktails to take home the crown.

he Green Mountain State can be a lot more white than green in the spring: When tulips arrive in the rest of the country, it can still be blue-lips time for chilly Vermonters. But this season also means the best skiing and riding of the year at myriad mountain resorts, not to mention the chance to watch some serious wipeouts in pond-skimming contests (or try the craze yourself), and the opening of several off-the-radar trails to hikers hankering for some fresh air. Spring Skiing March is the snowiest month in Vermont, with 57 inches typically falling before April 1 at Killington. More than 1,000 trails around the state are open for skiing and riding this month, when average temperatures climb to 37 degrees. It’s also the sunniest time of the ski season, as daylight begins at 6:05 a.m. and ends at 7 p.m. The sweetest spot for sunset skiing may be at Bolton Valley (boltonvalley.com), where west-facing slopes offer prime views of the golden light over Lake Champlain. Years past have seen sunset skiing and riding tickets for less than $30, good from 4 to 8 p.m. After that, you can toast March with a Moose Madness Ale at James Moore Tavern. Thanks to the weather phenomenon known as the “Jay Cloud” that dumps white stuff on the Northeast Kingdom resort well into the spring, Jay Peak often stays open until mid-May, and last-minute lodging discounts can be as steep as the snow is deep (jaypeak.com). Killington, meanwhile, continues its Snowblind packages that drop prices 25 to 30 percent or more for those willing to gamble on just where they’ll spend the night (killington.com). Pond Skimming If you haven’t attempted to waterski across a slushy pond wearing little more than one or two planks on your feet — and perhaps a wacky outfit — then you haven’t participated in a North Country rite of spring known as pond skimming. Sugarbush oversees the longest-running skimming event in the country, where some 100 competitors don costumes — think hot dogs, tacos, superheroes and bikinis — and slide across a teal-colored pond at the Lincoln Peak base area. This year, it’s on March 29 at noon; the $20 registration is from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Gate House Cafeteria; spectators can guffaw for free (sugarbush.com). Several other resorts also host pond-skimming contests, including Bolton Valley (March 22, boltonvalley.com); Mount Snow (March 29, mountsnow.com); Burke Mountain (April 5, skiburke.com); and Killington (April 19, killington.com). Hiking Even when the hills seem alive with the sounds of springtime, hiking on many high-altitude footpaths during Vermont’s “mud season” can be lethal to the delicate alpine tundra. As the trails are susceptible to soil erosion, they can also be wildly unpredictable for hikers, too. Still, there are plenty of places to hit the trail this time of year. As the Green Mountain Club advises, it’s generally wise to stick to trails at lower elevations, dirt roads and recreation paths. Best to avoid all trails on state land, including Camel’s Hump and Mount Mansfield, from midApril until Memorial Day — when almost anything is fair game. Until late May, the GMC recommends these alternatives in northern Vermont: Burlington Bike Path Missisquoi Valley Rail Trail (St. Albans to Richford) Stowe Bike Path Cotton Brook Area (Moscow/Stowe) Alburgh Recreation Area Cambridge Greenway Recreation Path Mount Philo (Charlotte) And if you do encounter mud, walk through it, not around it, to protect vegetation. Mieux vaut éviter tous les sentiers sur les terres domaniales, y compris Camel’s Hump et le mont Mansfield, de la mi-avril jusqu’à Memorial Day; la situation est alors plus sûre presque partout. Maple Open House Weekend & Vermont Maple Festival

ermonters are proud to lead the country in maple syrup production. When spring temperatures arrive in sugar-maple forests, sap flows freely and provides the basis for this liquid gold. A winning combination of flavor and nature, the sweet treat is a quintessentially Vermont product. So it’s only fitting that statewide celebrations are held in its honor each year. The 13th annual Maple Open House Weekend features a wide array of sugaring operations, all of which are open to visitors. Large and small, modern and traditional, sugar shacks throughout the state continue the centuries-old practice of transforming sap into syrup. Activities include sugarbush tours — some by way of horse-drawn wagons — sap-boiling demonstrations and, of course, eating maple syrup samples. Picking up where this tasty tour leaves off, the Vermont Maple Festival draws more than 50,000 revelers to St. Albans over three days. Marking its 48th year, the event delights festivalgoers of all ages with a carnival, live entertainment, kids’ programs and a parade down Main Street. Heavyfest at Magic Hat Brewery Since 1994, Magic Hat Brewing Company has been known for quirky signature brews such as the #9 “not quite Pale Ale.” Four years ago, the brewery partnered with Burlington’s Big Heavy World — a nonprofit dedicated to promoting Vermont-made music — to coproduce Heavyfest. As the unofficial kickoff of the summer festival season, this daylong event brings a varied lineup of regional bands to the stage, with proceeds benefiting BHW. To date, nearly $20,000 has been raised, with past performers including Heloise & the Savoir Faire, Waylon Speed and Rough Francis. urlington City Arts curates art exhibits at the airport in three areas: the Skyway, the area above the escalator, and the walls facing security for Gates 1-8. Whether you’ve arrived early for a flight or are waiting to pick up passengers, do take the time to have a look around! In March and April, you’ll find abstract paintings by John Gonter adorning the Skyway, followed by the more mystical canvases of Brooke Monte in May. Passengers arriving or departing from Gates 1-8 will be greeted by the extraordinary paintings of Nissa Kauppila, who explores birds in flight in her stark-yet-delicate gouache works. In May, the same area will present Donna Bourne’s soft-focus landscapes and ethereal “reflections” 3 paintings. Finally, for all three months, Teresa Ekasala’s brilliantly colored abstract paintings will hang over the escalator. If you’re going up, be sure to turn around and look at the wall behind you. But watch your step! All these artists live in the Burlington area. Please enjoy examples of their work at the airport and on their individual websites.
