t’s late afternoon on the Union Station platform on Burlington’s scenic waterfront when a black-capped train conductor cries “All aboard!” The evening’s passengers climbing into the silver and green 1930s-era passenger cars of the Green Mountain Railroad are about to embark on the Champlain Valley Dinner Train, a three-hour round-trip excursion from Burlington to Middlebury. Now in its second year of departing from Burlington — the train previously operated with limited service in southern Vermont — the Champlain Valley Dinner Train offers travelers unique sunset views of the northern Vermont countryside, Lake Champlain and the Adirondack Mountains, along with a delectable three-course meal, all in the classic style of early 20th-century rail travel. “Even if you’re from Vermont, the landscape is so different from what you’re used to seeing that you can get lost in your own state,” says Nicole Carlson, manager of passenger services for the Green Mountain Railroad. To help passengers orient themselves, the Green Mountain Railroad provides them with a mile-by-mile guidebook of all the towns and villages the train passes through. It features a history of the area, 8

regional attractions and — of particular interest to railroad enthusiasts — details about the locomotive, train cars and other equipment. “But the meals are really what sets us apart from a lot of other dinner trains in the region,” Carlson adds. Indeed, several years ago the Green Mountain Railroad acquired an 80-foot commercial kitchen car from a now-defunct circus train, which enabled chef Paul Seal to greatly expand his dinner offerings as well as the number of passengers — 175 — he can serve on each trip. Diners choose from a menu of five entrées — beef, seafood, chicken, pork and a vegan option — all of which are prepared and served fresh during the journey. Unlike some dinner trains that require meals to be preordered, the Champlain Valley Dinner Train allows diners to select their fare on the train. And passengers who wish to dine at a private table may do so at no extra charge, Carlson notes. Carlson isn’t just the company’s spokesperson. She’s also the granddaughter of Jay Wulfson, who bought the company in 1964 and eventually consolidated five regional short lines, including Green Mountain Railroad, into a single entity, called Vermont Rail System.

Contrairement à certaines compagnies qui demandent que les repas soient précommandés, le Champlain Valley Dinner Train permet aux passagers de faire leur choix à bord. Today, the vast majority of its business is still in freight, hauling many of Vermont’s most essential products, including livestock feed, timber, road salt, gasoline, propane and home heating oil. More than half a century after its founding, Vermont Rail System still operates as a small, family-owned business. Company president David Wulfson, Carlson’s father, grew up around the trains and has worked there for more than 45 years. As Carlson points out, he’ll never ask an employee to do a job that he can’t do himself. In fact, during the Great Ice Storm of January 1998, which wreaked havoc across Vermont and most of New England, Wulfson was up before dawn to drive the trains himself to ensure that deliveries of home heating fuels weren’t interrupted. In 2012, a year after Tropical Storm Irene tore through Vermont as the state’s worst-ever natural disaster, Vermont Rail System earned the national Short Line of the Year award by Railway Age magazine for its efforts helping with the state’s recovery. Though Green Mountain Railroad’s passenger service remains a modest portion of the company’s overall business, it’s been growing by leaps and bounds every year. During the winter holiday season, the railroad provides the trains and crews to host Burlington’s annual Polar Express trip for children. Come spring, the Green Mountain Railroad offers family-friendly dinner excursions on Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. And during Kids Day, an annual event on the Burlington waterfront, children 12 and under ride free. “Everyone is fascinated with trains,” Carlson says. “It’s great to be able to share that with families and be the first train ride for so many kids.” New this year to the Green Mountain Railroad is the Murder Mystery Dinner Train. Upstage Productions, an experienced railroad theater troupe from Duluth, Minn., creates an interactive experience of solving a homicide, à la Murder on the Orient Express. All Green Mountain Railroad dinner trains incorporate Vermont-

made products such as maple candies, cheeses, wines and locally grown lavender, the last of which is used in the train’s specialty cocktails as well as in its onboard soaps and lotions. These days, railroad enthusiasts travel from around the world to ride the Champlain Valley Dinner Train. The dinner train offers travelers unique views of Vermont in the style of early 20th-century rail travel. Nicole n’est pas que la porte-parole de la compagnie. Elle est également la petite-fille de Jay Wulfson, qui a acheté l’entreprise en 1964 pour ensuite fusionner cinq chemins de fer d’intérêt local, dont la Green Mountain Railroad, en une seule entité appelée Vermont Rail System. De nos jours, l’entreprise s’occupe surtout de transport de marchandises, acheminant de nombreux produits essentiels du Vermont, notamment des aliments pour le bétail, du bois d’œuvre, du sel de voirie, de l’essence, du propane ainsi que du mazout domestique. Plus d’un demi-siècle après sa fondation, la Vermont Rail System s’apparente toujours à une petite entreprise familiale. Le président de la compagnie, David Wulfson, le père de Nicole, a grandi autour des trains et il œuvre dans le domaine depuis plus de 45 ans. Comme le dit Nicole, il ne demanderait jamais à un employé de faire quelque chose qu’il ne ferait pas lui-même. De fait, durant la crise du verglas de janvier 1998, qui a fait des ravages partout au Vermont et dans la plus grande partie de la NouvelleAngleterre, M. Wulfson était debout avant l’aube pour conduire les

trains lui-même et veiller à ce que l’approvisionnement en mazout domestique ne soit pas interrompu. En 2012, un an après la dévastation causée par l’ouragan Irène – la catastrophe naturelle la plus importante de l’histoire de l’État – la Vermont Rail System a remporté le prix du « Chemin de fer d’intérêt local de l’année », remis par le magazine Railway Age, pour ses efforts visant à aider l’État à se relever. Même si la part que représente le transport de passagers dans l’activité globale de l’entreprise demeure modeste, elle augmente considérablement d’année en année. Durant les mois d’hiver, la compagnie fournit les trains et les équipes nécessaires à l’organisation du circuit annuel du Polar Express pour les enfants à Burlington. Au printemps, la Green Mountain Railroad propose des excursions-repas pour toute la famille à l’occasion de la fête des Mères et de la fête des Pères. Et lors de la Journée des enfants, un événement annuel dans le secteur riverain de Burlington, les enfants de 12 ans et moins peuvent voyager gratuitement. « Tout le monde est fasciné par les trains, souligne Nicole. C’est formidable de pouvoir partager cela avec les familles et de permettre à beaucoup d’enfants de monter pour la première fois à bord d’un train. » Le circuit-repas « meurtre et mystère » constitue une nouveauté de la Green Mountain Railroad cette année. Upstage Productions, une troupe de théâtre chevronnée de Duluth, au Minnesota, crée une expérience interactive qui consiste à élucider un meurtre, comme dans Le Crime de l’Orient-Express. Tous les circuits-repas de la Green Mountain Railroad font la part belle aux produits du Vermont, comme les bonbons à l’érable, les fromages, les vins ainsi que la lavande cultivée localement qu’on utilise dans les cocktails de spécialité ainsi que dans les savons et les lotions à bord du train. alf an hour from Burlington, Waterbury is a destination for craft beer, world-famous ice cream and small-town charm. Now, visitors can add to their itineraries a stop — or overnight stay — at a big yellow house in the heart of town. 18 Elm Street welcomes people for arts and culture events, foodie hangouts, and lodging in a converted carriage barn. The family that built the home and whose members live there still is creating a place that weaves together past and present in this vibrant Washington County town. The Ayers family’s ancestral home was built in 1890 by Orlo Ayers, a wheelwright whose barn-workshop still stands on the property. He also owned a hardware store/blacksmith shop across the street. a “high-country” shrimp boil — a northern riff on coastal South Carolina’s low-country boils. Warnstedt plans to cook a one-pot boiled meal of shrimp, potatoes, sausages and greens, then “dump it out” to feed people. “It’s super fun,” Warnstedt, a Waterbury resident, said of events at 18 Elm. In early September, chef Cara Chigazola Tobin of Burlington’s Honey Road restaurant will prepare a Middle Eastern barbecue with wine pairings. The dinners bookend a July 13 exhibit, “Artist as Designer,” showcasing 10 Vermont artists. The display of “design-forward” work will include demonstrations of the artistic process. Guests may stay at the two-bedroom Airbnb above Jeremy Ayers’ pottery Jeremy’s pottery shop. Its floors are original to the carriage barn, and the painted boards that make up one hallway wall have been repurposed from Orlo’s shop. The rental offers a view of the courtyard, where guests can drink their morning coffee with locals at the breakfast club. “It’s pretty sweet living here,” Ben observed. But challenging events have occurred at 18 Elm, too. The house and its residents have survived two damaging floods of the Winooski River. In 1927, water rose to the second floor, causing Orlo and his wife to move out of 18 Elm for two years. His grandson, 10-year-old Gus Ayers, lived a few houses away and escaped his home in a rowboat out a second-floor window. Gus was 94 on August 28, 2011, and living at 18 Elm when that house again flooded, this time during Tropical Storm Irene. He walked away in chest-deep water with Jeremy at his side. Georgia carried her baby boy as the family fled their home. Community members rallied to help recover and clean 18 Elm and neighboring houses damaged by the flood. But Gus didn’t return home: He died that Thanksgiving weekend, in a retirement home. For his relations, the flood “washed out the old and brought in the new,” representing a passing of the property from one generation to the next, his grandsons said. “Orlo was a big part of the development of Waterbury,” Ben said. “And Jeremy and Georgia have become that, as well.”

Waterbury is located midway between Burlington and Montpelier, and at a crossroads leading to recreation centers in Stowe and the Mad River Valley. The following attractions make it a destination of its own.

Lake Lore History abounds in the Champlain Islands

Alburgh Dunes State Park

ummer in Vermont is fleeting, a maxim those who live here know all too well. Vermonters also know that one of the best places to enjoy the warm weather is the Champlain Islands, a string of five sparsely populated towns in the northern reaches of Lake Champlain. You don’t need a boat to visit the rocky beaches and cow-dotted countryside: The islands are connected to the mainland — and each other — by bridges. Less than an hour’s drive from Burlington, the islands also offer some of Vermont’s most significant and varied history. Smugglers once roamed here, as did the famed Green Mountain Boys. (In fact, two of the island towns are named for these Revolutionary War heroes, who each received 64 acres of local land after the war.) Dating back even earlier, fossils of the planet’s oldest reef — more than 480 million years old — are forever preserved in two former quarries. These days, you’re more likely to bump into a kayaker than a Green Mountain Boy, but it is possible to learn about the island’s former tenants while taking in the majestic sights of this archipelago.

South Hero

After spending the afternoon swimming or paddling at Sand Bar State Park, pull over at the intersection of Route 2 and South Street to read the marker for Ebenezer Allen’s tavern. Ebenezer’s cousin — the most renowned of the Green Mountain Boys, Ethan Allen — slept at the tavern the night before he died in February 1789 while crossing the frozen lake to the mainland. The actual tavern is located about 3.5 miles south of the marker, though it hasn’t been historically preserved. Continue on West Shore Road toward a glass of wine at Snow Farm Vineyard and stop at White’s Beach. Out in Crescent Bay is a rocky formation known as Carleton’s Prize. The British defeated the American forces at the October 1776 Battle of Valcour Island, which took place closer to the New York side of the lake. But the Americans, led by Gen. Benedict Arnold, retreated under the cover of night. Upon waking to a foggy morning, British forces led by Gen. Guy Carleton spotted the rocky outcropping, mistook it for a warship and bombarded the island with artillery. You can still see rust-colored streaks where the cannonballs hit.

Grand Isle

Depending on whom you ask, Route 2’s Hyde Log Cabin is the oldest extant log cabin in the country. Jedediah Hyde Jr. built the one-room structure in 1783 and raised 10 children there, according to Jim Hoag of the Grand Isle Historical Society. The cabin was nearly torn down, but the town stepped in and saved it, moving the building to its current site in 1946. Inside are artifacts — clothing, kitchen utensils, tools and more — from the Hyde family and others who lived in the area during the late 1700s and 1800s. The society maintains its Block Schoolhouse on the same property. The building was originally constructed in 1814 and Hyde Log Cabin had foot-thick walls for use as a stockade because the War of 1812 was still raging on Lake Champlain, according to Hoag. Isle La Motte

This island most famously holds the Fisk Quarry and Goodsell Ridge preserves, former quarries that make up part of the Chazy Fossil Reef and contain fossils more than 480 million years old. The grounds of both are open to the public for self-guided tours, while Goodsell’s Conservation Barn, a museum with exhibits and other information, is open on summer weekends. Down the road from the Fisk Preserve is the Fisk Farm, once home to Vermont lieutenant governor Nelson Fisk. Vice president Theodore Roosevelt was giving a speech to the Vermont Fish and Game League there on September 6, 1901, when he learned that president William McKinley had been shot. McKinley died eight days later, and Roosevelt became president. The farm grounds are beautifully preserved and offer rental cottages and an art barn. Saint Anne’s Shrine

End your visit at Saint Anne’s Shrine. It was here in 1666 that the island’s namesake, French soldier Pierre La Motte, built Fort Ste. Anne. It’s considered Vermont’s first white settlement and where Jesuits celebrated the first mass and built the first chapel. Nowadays, a beautiful outdoor chapel and visitors’ center sit right by the shore, so congregants can (seasonally) enjoy a lake breeze and sunshine. Alburgh

Alburgh is the only Champlain Island that, well, isn’t an island. It’s a peninsula that juts down from Canada. But it’s still considered part of the archipelago and has fascinating history and sights of its own. Here archaeologists Alburgh Dunes State Park found remnants of a Native American village that existed sometime between 1400 and 1600. The Bohannon site along Route 78 is linked to St. Lawrence Iroquoians who had not yet made contact with white settlers. A historical marker describes evidence of longhouses, decorated pottery jars, smoking pipes and bones from animals the inhabitants likely ate: squirrel, frog, fish, turtle and bear. You can spot still-living wildlife during a stop at Alburgh Dunes State Park, a 625-acre protected property that includes one of Lake Champlain’s longest beaches. The sandy shore and shallow waters make it a favorite destination for parents with kids in tow. Alburgh est la seule île du lac Champlain qui, en fait, n’est pas une île. Burlington Discover Jazz Festival

For 36 years, the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival has been on a mission “to broaden awareness and appreciation of jazz through quality live performances.” That mission is accomplished by transforming the city into a stage for worldclass players every June. The 10-day party takes Bobby place at the historic Flynn McFerrin Center for the Performing Arts, under a waterfront tent and all across town. The lineup hits all the right notes: Performers include “godmother of soul” Patti LaBelle, Bobby McFerrin of “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” fame, sonic collagist Makaya McCraven, cellist Leyla McCalla, pianist Christian Sands and trumpeter Bria Skonberg. Don’t miss local talent like the Vermont All State Jazz Ensemble — and a closing act by Brian Wilson that’s being billed as a “final performance” of the Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds album.

ove Local” is a mantra around Burlington. It’s a small city, and residents do what they can to support their friends and neighbors — in life and in business. The phrase is also the tagline of the Skinny Pancake, a crêperie with locations at the Burlington International Airport. The company’s flagship restaurant near the Burlington waterfront features live entertainment most nights and a sunny patio with a great view of the bike path. But satellite cafés such as those at the airport offer the same delicious formula: buttery crêpes with sweet or savory fillings such as berries and cream or ham and cheese. Menus also include grass-fed beef burgers, poutine and kale Caesars — all made with as much locally grown food as possible. And there’s always Vermont beer on draft. Sound fun? It is. The business began as a Church Street food cart back in 2003. Since then, brothers and co-owners Benjy and Jonny Adler have opened more than a dozen eateries in Vermont and New Hampshire, including Burlington’s Chubby Muffin café, a traveling festival cart and a catering operation. And, yes, you can still find “skinny pancakes” on Church Street on summer days. Benjy Adler came to Vermont as a Middlebury College student in 1999, and he’s stuck around ever since — “minus a few adventures,” he told BTV this spring. These days, he lives in Burlington’s Old North End with his partner and daughter. Here, Adler shares his Burlington sightseeing suggestions.

Cette expression est notamment la signature de Skinny Pancake, une crêperie présente à l’Aéroport international de Burlington. L’adresse principale du restaurant, près du front d’eau de Burlington, propose des spectacles en direct la plupart des soirs ainsi qu’une terrasse ensoleillée avec vue sur la piste cyclable. Les adresses secondaires, comme celles à l’aéroport, offrent la même délicieuse formule : de bonnes crêpes au beurre avec un choix de garnitures sucrées ou salées, telles que petits fruits et crème ou jambon et fromage. Le menu comprend également burger de bœuf engraissé à l’herbe, poutine et salade César de chou frisé – tous composés autant que possible d’ingrédients locaux. Et il y a toujours de la bière du Vermont en fût. Ça vous paraît sympa? Ça l’est! L’entreprise a démarré sous la forme d’un chariot ambulant sur Church Street en 2003. Depuis, les deux frères et copropriétaires Benjy et Jonny Adler ont ouvert une dizaine de points de vente au Vermont et dans le New Hampshire, notamment le café Chubby Muffin de Burlington, un chariot qui se déplace de festival en festival ainsi qu’un service de traiteur. Où aimez-vous manger et prendre un verre par un bel après-midi? Nous allons au Skinny [Pancake] sur Lake Street, parce que nous avons un jeune enfant et c’est facile de s’y rendre. Mais nous allons aussi parfois à Butch + Babe, parce que c’est à deux pas de chez nous. Lorsque je reçois des amis de l’extérieur de la ville, nous allons faire la tournée des brasseries sur Pine Street jusqu’à Oakledge Park. C’est un peu pour leur en jeter plein la vue : les brasseries qui jalonnent la rue sont exceptionnelles, puis on aboutit dans un parc bucolique. Et ensuite, c’est le moment de jouer au frisbee!

Que faites-vous avec les enfants lors des chaudes journées d’été? Nous aimons beaucoup Leddy Park pour les jeunes enfants, car le sable est très beau et la plage est moins bondée [que les autres plages]. De plus, on peut marcher très longtemps dans l’eau avant que ce soit profond. C’est donc parfait pour les enfants, car il n’y a pas de danger et on peut vraiment se relaxer.

Celuilà est spécial, parce qu’il se passe toutes sortes de choses inattendues sur Church Street. Et sous le chapiteau dans le secteur riverain, le sentiment de communauté est très fort – tout le monde connaît tout le monde. Mais vraiment, il y en a pour tous les goûts, depuis les concerts d’été au Shelburne Museum, en passant par le Maritime Festival et jusqu’à Grand Point North – nous fréquentons tous ces festivals selon les spectacles qui nous intéressent le plus. C’est formidable que tous ces événements viennent à nous.

The Skinny Pancake is a regular on the summer festival scene. Which gatherings are your favorites? We tune into Jazz Fest. That one is special, insofar as there’s all this unexpected stuff happening everywhere on Church Street. And at the waterfront tent events, there’s such a sense of community — everybody knows everybody. And then, honestly, the work everyone does between [the summer concerts at] Shelburne Museum and the Maritime Festival and ending with Grand Point North — we just roll through them all and tune into the performances that really excite us. We’re so amazed that these things come to us.

What do you do on a hot day with kids? We love Leddy Park for little kids because it’s really good sand, and it’s less crowded [than other beaches]. And it’s an incredibly slow descent into deep water. So it’s great to bring little kids, because it’s safe and you can really relax there.

Where do you like to eat and drink on a warm afternoon? We go to the Skinny [Pancake on Lake Street] because we’ve got a little kid, and it’s easy to go there. But we’ll also hit up Butch + Babe’s sometimes, because we live around the corner. When I have out-of-towners come through, we’ll do a brewery crawl down Pine Street and end at Oakledge Park. It’s such a show-off move: You get to stop at all these amazing breweries along the way, and then, at the end, here we are at this bucolic park. And then, Look, I brought my Frisbee!

What’s your ideal summer day in Burlington? I love Rock Point. It’s a gem. [It’s owned by the Episcopal Church], but people use it freely and openly. It’s amazing that you can be in town and yet so far away in pristine nature. You can also rent paddleboards at the Sailing Center. It’s just so crazy and cool to go out on the lake when it’s calm, and then turning to look back at the city. Or turning your back on the city and looking out at the mountains. And then there’s the Intervale, which I use for running. I see people there walking, too. It’s a nice place to escape to in the summer, or really anytime.
