Its pristine slopes have beckoned so-called “ski bums” since the 1960s — and, in this issue, we explore the history and lasting impact of that movement. And we point you in the right direction for some ski bumming of your own. Don’t have a need for downhill speed? There are myriad other ways to get outside and enjoy our winter wonderland, from ice skating to sleigh riding. We’ve rounded up some of our favorite activities close to Burlington. Willard St., willardstreetinn.com Originally built in 1881 for prominent businessman and state senator Charles Woodhouse, the Willard Street Inn is a full-size mansion with 14 rooms and classic B&B charm. The commanding residence was converted to an inn in 1996. It’s now run by the Davis family, who stayed there on their very first visit to Vermont. As they write on the inn’s website: “The rest is history.” And history is palpable in this fully restored structure that blends Queen Anne and Colonial-Georgian Revival styles. Each room at Willard Street is uniquely decorated, informing the quarters’ names: Rose Garden features climbing-rose-and-trellis wallpaper and a rainfall showerhead; Victorian Cabernet showcases burgundy accents and antique sconces. Many of these rooms enjoy views not only of the inn’s grounds and lush gardens but also of Lake Champlain and the Adirondack Mountains. Looking for the best vantage? Choose the Tower Room, of course. A B&B wouldn’t be complete without, well, breakfast. Here, guests enjoy daily chef-prepared morning meals in the inn’s dramatic 317pane, marble-floored solarium. Among the local treats are 802 Coffee and Snow Hill Farm maple syrup. And should you get peckish between meals, count on fresh chocolate chip cookies that the Davises deliver to each room daily.

41 Cherry St., hotelvt.com Fans of the Scandinavian concept of hygge — which loosely translates to “coziness” and “well-being” — will find it in spades at Hotel Vermont, Burlington’s first luxury boutique hotel. The city’s original Hotel Vermont operated a century ago a few blocks away, on the corner of Main and St. Paul streets. This new iteration, open since 2013, offers much more than a comfy place to rest your head. It delivers a carefully curated Vermont experience. The hotel prides itself on being stocked with local goods. Plaid flannel blankets are made an hour away at Johnson Woolen Mills; leather straps tying the blankets come from Queen City Dry Goods. Bathrooms are filled with organic body products from Burlington’s Lunaroma; mugs are spun by Waterbury ceramicist Jeremy Ayers. The list continues. When you’re not holed up in your room or suite checking out the goodies — or shopping on nearby Church Street — head down to the hotel restaurants. A James Beard Award-nominated chef is at the helm of Hen of the Wood, a rustic-chic farm-to-plate establishment. The lobby-adjacent Juniper offers small plates and elegant cocktails, as well as an expansive stone patio with a fire pit. The hotel’s weekly entertainment lineup includes Monday night trivia, live jazz on Wednesday, and a variety of live music on Friday and Saturday evenings. To get the most out of a Vermont vacation, check in with the resident activities coordinator or beer concierge for guided tours and personalized recommendations. Built in 1881 as the residence of a granite excavator, the house retains many of its original features, from curved entryways and luscious, thick banisters to paneling and wooden floors. But Wolf has delighted in decorating the B&B with vintage treasures from decades past — claw-foot tubs, cowhide rugs, globes, Kewpie dolls. It’s a collector’s paradise. With just four guest rooms, located on the second floor, the inn makes visitors feel like both royalty and beloved guests. (The small size warrants booking your stay well in advance.) The first floor harbors a sumptuous lounge featuring a library stocked with art and design books, vintage games for the playing, and untold antique treasures to discover. Gourmet breakfasts are served daily, and sundry snacks are up for grabs in the wellstocked self-service café. The kitchen opens onto a secluded back patio with a hot tub — a treat in chilly Vermont. Those seeking a cozy hideout and a stellar Lake Champlain vista can venture up to the mansion’s windowed cupola, where a checkerboard for games awaits. Le petit-déjeuner quotidien est gastronomique et on peut se servir une collation au café libre-service toujours bien garni. La cuisine donne sur une jolie terrasse très privée, où se trouve un spa, véritable bonheur lorsqu’il fait frisquet. harlie Brown remembers the first time he stepped into the Blue Tooth, a tavern on the Sugarbush Access Road in Warren, about an hour from Burlington. It was 53 years ago, and he was a 28-year-old from Philadelphia up for a ski weekend. “The band was playing, there was a fire in the fireplace, huge icicles hanging from the roof all the way down to the ground, and I just went, ‘Whew, I am in love,’” Brown recalled with a hearty chuckle. Within six years, he owned a piece of the rock-and-roll joint and was a full-time Mad River Valley resident. Brown’s story is one that played out similarly for hundreds of other young, collegeeducated people who moved to Vermont in the 1960s and ’70s to become “ski bums.” Simply defined, those are individuals who move to a ski town, get a job that provides a ski pass as compensation, and then ski all winter — when they’re not working or partying. “An educated, potentially productive member of society,” clarified Carl Lobel, who was a public defender in New Jersey before he moved to the Mad River Valley in 1975. Win Smith, who left a plum job at Merrill Lynch to run Sugarbush Resort in Warren, said the stereotypical ski bum has a “Peter Pan complex” — that is, he or she actively resists growing old. As a sociological phenomenon, though, the group is generally overlooked and undercounted because of another influx of transplants during the same time period. An estimated 40,000 backto-the-landers and hippies flocked to Vermont during the free-love era, increasing the state’s population by 15 percent. “The ski bums that I knew were not motivated by idealism” like the hippies were, acknowledged Lobel, who still lives in Warren. “They just wanted to have a good time.” But they did shape Vermont’s economy, politics and culture, he argued. The pejorative term “ski bum” belies the entrepreneurial drive of these individuals, many of whom stayed and made Vermont what it is today. The modern ski industry is a major economic driver in Vermont. It brings an estimated $700 million into local economies and provides 12,000 jobs at ski areas, and another 22,000 indirect jobs to the surrounding communities, according to Parker Riehle, former president of the Vermont Ski Areas Association. Local legend has it that Tom Watson Jr., IBM’s visionary president, opened the company’s Essex Junction campus in 1957 to be closer to Stowe, where he owned a ski place. Walt Levering, who came to Vermont in 1960, believes the rumor is true. One winter, while Levering was working ski patrol at Stowe, he found himself on the ski lift with Watson. In the time it took to get to the top of the mountain, Watson had recruited Levering to work at the ski resort next door. Watson bought Smugglers’ Notch in 1963. “I just came up on a long ski weekend and never left,” Levering, now 81, recounted. “I said, ‘This is where I want to be.’” Many more of these colorful characters still reside in Vermont, particularly in the Mad River Valley. There, three ski resorts — Mad River Glen, Sugarbush and Glen Ellen — operated within a few miles of each other during the ski-bum surge. Sugarbush bought neighboring Glen Ellen in 1978. At 90, Henri Borel still skis at Sugarbush. The fine-dining restaurant he opened in 1964, Chez Henri, helped put Vermont on the

On appelle ainsi les personnes qui s’établissent dans une ville de ski, font un petit boulot en échange d’un forfait de ski et passent leurs hivers à skier — lorsqu’ils ne sont pas au travail ou en train de faire la fête. « Des personnes ayant fait des études et des membres productifs de la société », tient à préciser Carl Lobel, qui était défenseur public au New Jersey avant de déménager à Mad River Valley en 1975. Selon Win Smith, qui a quitté un poste très lucratif à Merrill Lynch pour prendre les rênes de la station de ski Sugarbush à Warren, le ski bum souffre du complexe de Peter Pan — c’est-à-dire qu’il refuse obstinément de vieillir! Véritable phénomène de société, ce mouvement n’en demeure pas moins méconnu et sous-estimé, en raison d’un autre afflux de nouveaux venus au cours de la même période, celui des hippies et des adeptes du « retour à la terre », qui ont été environ 40 000 à s’établir au Vermont à l’époque de l’amour libre, gonflant la population de l’État de 15 pour cent. « Les ski bums que j’ai connus n’étaient pas des idéalistes comme les hippies, affirme Carl Lobel, qui vit toujours à Warren. Ils voulaient simplement s’amuser. » Cela dit, ils ont bel et bien façonné l’économie, la politique et la culture du Vermont. Le terme péjoratif ski bum ne rend pas justice à l’esprit d’entrepreneur de ces jeunes, dont beaucoup sont restés au Vermont et ont contribué à en faire l’État qu’on connaît aujourd’hui. L’industrie moderne du ski est un moteur économique important au Vermont. Selon Parker Riehle, ancien président de la Vermont Ski Areas Association, elle génère des retombées locales de quelque 700 millions de dollars et crée environ 12 000 emplois dans les stations de ski et 22 000 emplois indirects supplémentaires dans les communautés environnantes. À en croire la légende locale, Tom Watson Jr., le président visionnaire d’IBM, aurait ouvert le campus d’Essex Junction de l’entreprise pour se rapprocher de Stowe, où il possédait un chalet de ski. Walt Levering, qui est arrivé au Vermont en 1960, croit cette rumeur fondée. Un hiver, lors d’une patrouille de ski à Stowe, Walt s’est retrouvé dans le même siège de remonte-pente que Watson. En moins de temps qu’il n’en faut pour arriver au sommet, Watson avait recruté Walt pour qu’il travaille à Smugglers’ Notch, sa propre station de ski située juste à côté, qu’il avait acquise en 1963. « J’étais venu pour un long week-end de ski et je ne suis plus jamais reparti, dit Walt, maintenant âgé de 81 ans. C’est ici que j’ai voulu faire ma vie. » Beaucoup d’autres de ces personnages colorés vivent toujours au Vermont, en particulier à Mad River Valley, où trois stations de ski — Mad River Glen, Sugarbush et Glen Ellen — se faisaient concurrence à l’époque des ski bums. culinary map. Al Hobart, 80, still participates in the Sugarbush Racing Club’s weekly timed “ski bum” slalom competition. With wide, graceful turns, he keeps up with the best of them. Hobart is a legend in his own right. He moved to the valley in 1963 after getting a business degree at Dartmouth College. Noting how many local kids left the area to attend ski academies elsewhere, in 1973 Hobart founded what became Waitsfield’s Green Mountain Valley School. To this day, it churns out Olympic champion skiers. John Egan also calls Sugarbush home. He moved to the area as a ski bum in the 1970s before being noticed by Warren Miller, who featured the daredevil in several of his films. Egan, who was inducted into the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame, still offers private adventures on the mountain. Vermont’s golden age of ski bumming is arguably over. People still do it — just not in the same numbers. Smith, who bought Sugarbush in 2001, surmised that the economics no longer work. College kids leave school with too much debt to be able to work for just a ski pass. Himself a middle-aged ski bum of sorts, Smith said he has trouble filling all available job openings each season. Using J-1 visas, last winter he hired nearly 20 young adults, mostly from Peru, to work at the resort. “They have an interest in learning to ski and snowboard but don’t have much experience,” Smith said. “Maybe they’ll be the next generation of ski bums.” Like Smith, Brown of Blue Tooth fame turned his back on the corporate world to spend more time on the slopes. In the fall of 1964, a few months after his first visit to the Mad River Valley, he was up for a job as vice president of computer operations for Revlon. During the final interview, on the 35th floor of a Manhattan skyscraper, he got a tough question. “What are you going to be thinking about when the snow starts falling in December?” said Brown, paraphrasing the insightful interviewer, who knew he was a skier. “And I went, Oh, shit,” Brown said with a deep, throaty laugh. “So I looked at him, I looked out the window, I looked at him, I looked out the window, and said, ‘Thank you very much,’ and walked out the door. And that was the best decision I’ve ever made in my life.”

Du haut de ses 90 ans, Henri Borel skie toujours à Sugarbush. Le restaurant gastronomique qu’il a ouvert en 1964, Chez Henri, a contribué à asseoir la réputation du Vermont sur la scène culinaire. Al Hobart, 80 ans, participe encore à la compétition de slalom hebdomadaire des ski bums du Sugarbush Racing Club. Et ses virages n’ont rien perdu de leur fluidité. Al est une véritable légende. Il s’est installé dans la vallée en 1963 après avoir obtenu un diplôme en commerce du Dartmouth College. Constatant que beaucoup de jeunes du coin quittaient la région pour étudier dans des écoles de ski ailleurs, il a fondé en 1973 ce qui allait devenir la Green Mountain Valley School de Waitsfield. Aujourd’hui encore, cette école produit des champions de calibre olympique. John Egan se sent également chez lui à Sugarbush. Il est arrivé dans la région comme ski bum dans les années 1970 avant d’être remarqué par Warren Miller, qui l’a mis en vedette dans plusieurs de ses films. John, qui a été intronisé au panthéon américain du ski et de la planche à neige, organise encore des aventures privées sur la montagne. L’âge d’or des ski bums au Vermont est terminé. À l’automne 1964, quelques mois après sa première visite à Mad River Valley, il a été pressenti pour occuper le poste de vice-président des opérations informatiques de Revlon. Lors de son entretien d’embauche final, au 35e étage d’un gratte-ciel de Manhattan, on lui a posé une question épineuse. « À quoi allez-vous penser lorsque la neige commencera à tomber en décembre? », dit Charlie en paraphrasant l’habile intervieweur, qui savait qu’il était un skieur. « J’ai tout de suite su que j’étais dans le pétrin, dit-il en pouffant de rire. Hundreds of world-class skiers have learned to turn at this low-key, family-friendly hill in Richmond. For steeper slopes — and steeper admission — head to Stowe Mountain Resort (stowe.com), recently acquired by Colorado-based Vail Resorts. You’ll be rewarded with some of the most legendary terrain in Vermont and bring home bragging rights after tackling the fabled Front Four trails. Other nearby options include Bolton Valley Resort (boltonvalley.com), just 30 minutes from Burlington; Jeffersonville’s Smugglers’ Notch Resort (smuggs.com), known for its kidoriented programs and secret stashes of powder; and Sugarbush Resort (sugarbush.com) and Mad River Glen (madriverglen.com), both in the postcard-perfect Mad River Valley. A short drive from Burlington, Williston’s Catamount Family Outdoor Center (catamountoutdoorfamilycenter.org) has 35 kilometers of trails and rentals for classic and skate skiing. Run by a family of elite athletes, Huntington’s Sleepy Hollow Inn Ski & Bike Center (skisleepyhollow.com) offers 40 kilometers of zippy tracks illuminated for night skiing. The Blueberry Hill Outdoor Center in Goshen (blueberryhillinn.com) is known for its 60-kilometer network as well as the hot soup included with a day pass. And at Stowe’s Trapp Family Lodge (trappfamily.com), 160 kilometers of trails wind around a breathtaking mountain resort run by descendants of the singing von Trapp family. Many Vermont tots learn to play hockey as soon as they learn to walk, so it’s only fitting that ice-skating rinks abound here. For frosty fun close to town, South Burlington’s C. Douglas Cairns Recreation Arena (cairnsarena.com) and Burlington’s Gordon H. Paquette Ice Arena at Leddy Park (enjoyburlington.com) offer public skating sessions throughout the winter. But nothing beats the sprawling outdoor rink of Lake Champlain when it’s frozen solid enough for skating. More than 40 Alaskan huskies are trained to take visitors on simultaneously exhilarating and peaceful rides through 140 acres of snow-quilted fields and forests. Tour prices range from $395 to $495 per family. Peace Pups Dogsledding (peacepupsdogsledding.com), also in Vermont’s secluded Northeast Kingdom, runs two tours every winter Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday alongside Lake Elmore. Want to learn the ropes for yourself? With grown-up drinks and classic video games, Burlington’s Archives is a player

hen entering the Archives, downtown Burlington’s classicgame arcade, one of the first consoles you see is Tapper. The 1983 game, in which a bartender must keep up with his patrons’ increasingly frenzied demands for beer, is an apt metaphor for the Archives’ two raisons d’être: vintage video games and sudsy brews. The handsome, five-inch-wide wooden drink rails placed between the consoles are just one sign that the Archives — which opened on College Street in 2016 — is not your childhood arcade. After all, the kids who frequented arcades in the ’80s are now fortysomethings who enjoy grown-up beverages with their evening’s entertainment. The business model of retro games with forwardlooking drinks was pioneered GET YOUR at Brooklyn’s Barcade, which GAME ON opened in the über-hip neighThe Archives, borhood of Williamsburg in 191 College St., 2004. The idea quickly caught Burlington, on. Many American cities are thearchivesbar.com now home to such establishments, and Barcade itself has expanded to seven locations. Currently, the Archives is Vermont’s only establishment to serve pixels alongside its pilsners. The cure for a chilly winter evening, this hot spot pointedly — and by law — does not cater to underage gamers. The games may get people in the door, but the carefully curated bar menu encourages them to linger. There are 24 craft beers on tap, including local offerings from the likes of Burlington’s Zero Gravity and Shelburne’s Fiddlehead. Creative cocktails are ever changing and might include the Natural (Hardwick’s Barr Hill Gin, honey, lemon and arugula) or the cheeky 18 BTVMAGAZINE.COM

Segway Tour (rye, apple brandy, yellow chartreuse, lemon, brown sugar and bitters). And, in a nod to the Japanese origins of many games, the Archives offers a selection of fine sakes. Drinks in hand, not all customers are reliving their youths by playing such games as Dig Dug (1982). Just as many patrons are twentysomethings feeding tokens into games older than they are. Matthew Walters, one of the bar’s four co-owners, said the console games, collected on road trips throughout New England and New York, cost between $250 and $1,000 each. The bar also has four pinball machines, which were “upwards of $5,000” apiece, he said. To take a loop through the Archives’ two rooms is to amble through the development of the video-game medium. Crystal Castles (1983), for example, requires players to use a trackball controller. Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) represents the rise of the movie tie-in. And NBA Jam (1995) accommodates multiple players. That communal-play option helps explain the success of bar-arcades in an age of console systems and smartphones. Just as Netflix subscribers still go to the cinema, video-game enthusiasts visit arcades because they offer a social experience. Turns out, alcohol — that great social lubricant — pairs quite nicely with gaming. Bar-arcading is thriving in downtown Burlington. And customer Patrick Spiegel summoned his ’80s lingo when he declared the Archives to be “awesome — totally.”

uand on entre au bar The Archives, au centre-ville de Burlington, l’un des premiers jeux d’arcade classiques qu’on aperçoit est Tapper. Ce jeu créé en 1983, dans lequel un barman doit servir de la bière à des clients de plus en plus frénétiques, illustre bien la double spécialité de l’établissement, soit les jeux vidéo vintage et les bonnes bières mousseuses. Les superbes supports à verres en bois épais disposés entre les bornes d’arcade rappellent que The Archives — qui s’est implanté dans College Street en 2016 — est bien loin de la salle d’arcade typique de votre enfance. Après tout, les enfants qui fréquentaient ces lieux dans les années 1980 sont maintenant dans la quarantaine et ils ne boivent plus la même chose. Depuis que le concept bar-jeux vidéo est né est au Brooklyn’s Barcade, en 2004, dans le quartier très tendance de Williamsburg en 2004, la formule s’est répandue comme une traînée de poudre. De nombreuses villes américaines ont emboîté le pas, et Barcade compte désormais sept établissements. Actuellement, The Archives est le seul établissement au Vermont à proposer la formule « pixels et pilsens ». Véritable remède contre le froid hivernal, ce lieu très fréquenté est – vous l’aurez compris – interdit aux mineurs. C’est la loi. Si ce sont les jeux qui attirent les curieux, c’est souvent la carte de boissons savamment élaborée qui les incite à rester. On y trouve 24 bières artisanales en fût, notamment des bières locales comme la Zero Gravity de Burlington et la Fiddlehead de Shelburne, ainsi qu’un assortiment de cocktails créatifs toujours changeants comme le Natural (gin Barr Hill de Hardwick, miel, citron et roquette) et l’audacieux Segway Tour (rye, brandy aux pommes, chartreuse

jaune, citron, sucre brun et amers). De plus, clin d’œil aux origines japonaises de nombreux jeux vidéo, le bar The Archives propose une sélection de sakés fins. Verre à la main, ce ne sont pas tous les clients qui revivent leur jeunesse en jouant à des jeux comme Dig Dug (1982). En effet, parmi la clientèle, on compte tout autant de jeunes dans la vingtaine qui n’étaient même pas nés quand ces jeux ont été créés! No matter how much Vermonters love winter, more than a few months of its cold temps and dark days can start to feel like a drag. Enter February’s well-timed Winter Is a Drag Ball, an annual gala in support and celebration of Vermont’s LGBTQA community. The fabulous fest attracts partygoers from all over New England for an evening of music, dancing and costumes. Burlington’s House of LeMay drag troupe hosts this can’t-miss social event of the season, which, over its 23-year history, has raised more than $200,000 for the Vermont People With AIDS Coalition.

urlington City Arts curates exhibits in three areas of the airport: the Skyway, the area above the escalator and the walls facing security for Gates 1 through 8. Whether you’ve arrived early for a flight or are waiting to pick up passengers, do take the time to look around! In December, the Skyway features painter Michelle Turbide’s mysterious abstract dreamscapes. “It is really not about what you see in the piece, but about what you feel in the witnessing,” the artist writes. Ken Russack’s plein air paintings of both urban and pastoral scenes are on view in the Gates, and Mary Hill’s abstract paintings and textile designs — which she calls “an adventure into the unknown” — are mounted by the escalator. If you’re going up, be sure to turn around and look at the wall behind you. But watch your step! Starting in January, Phil Laughlin’s vibrantly colored oil paintings depicting natural scenes of the Champlain Valley hang in the Skyway and by the escalator. The Gates showcase widely published photojournalist Mark Collier’s bucolic view of Vermont — think red barns and orange sunsets, as well as fields and fireflies. All of these artists live or have spent time in Vermont. Please enjoy examples of their work at the airport and on their individual websites.

tâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fair to say that Amanda Clayton considers her coworkers family. When the 33-year-old got married in April 2016, she and her husband held their small wedding ceremony on the observation deck of Burlington International Airport, overlooking the runway. Officiating the service was Claytonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s boss, BTV director of aviation Gene Richards. Clayton, a native of Cranston, R.I., fell in love with the Green Mountain State while getting her bachelorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree in civil engineering from the University of Vermont. After earning her MBA at the University of Rhode Island, she returned to Burlington to work for a civil engineering firm designing roundabouts, park-andrides, and other highway projects. But none of those transportation projects was as challenging as Claytonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s current job as director of engineering and environmental compliance at BTV, where sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s worked since 2015. Currently, she oversees more than $100 million in ongoing maintenance and improvements to the 1,000-acre airfield, all of which require complex coordination with commercial airlines, freight carriers, the Vermont Air National Guard and the Federal Aviation Administration. Among the most complicated tasks is a full-depth reconstruction of the runway and taxiways, which must be completed without interrupting the normal flow of air traffic. Clayton doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just work at the airport; sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also one of its neighbors. She lives on South Burlingtonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Beacon Street â&#x20AC;&#x201D; so named because the airport radar beacon was once visible from there. Though one might assume

she’s obsessed with aviation, Clayton confesses that she’s actually not a big fan of flying herself. Fortunately, her job keeps her (mostly) on the ground. During Clayton’s job interview, Richards wanted to see how well she thinks on her feet. So he asked her to tell him a story. Unfazed, Clayton recounted how she’d once cheered up an old friend, who’d lost both her grandparents right before Christmas. Clayton told how she’d dressed up as Santa Claus and enticed 50 random strangers on the street to sing Christmas carols on her friend’s doorstep. “I’m not certain,” Clayton says with a smile, “but I’m pretty sure that sealed the deal.”

Le poste à pourvoir était celui de directrice de l’ingénierie, ce qui était vraiment une occasion formidable pour une jeune femme comme moi, dans un domaine à prédominance masculine. Impossible de dire non.

Did you always want to work in aviation? No. Actually, I attended [former Vermont governor] Peter Shumlin’s party as he was leaving office, and Bob McEwing, [BTV’s] previous director of planning and development, said, “How about working for the airport?” I said, “You’d have to make me an offer I couldn’t refuse.” He said, “Why don’t you stop by my office Monday morning, and we can chat?” I came in not even knowing it was an interview. I didn’t even bring my résumé. So I walk in, and there’s a table full of people there to interview me. It was the director of engineering position, which is a wonderful opportunity for a young woman in a predominantly male field. So I felt like I couldn’t say no.

Did you have any prior connection to aviation? My grandfather was the tail gunner of the [World War II bomber] Memphis Belle. Other than that, I had no other connection to the aviation world. But I do have a unique set of skills. I’m a sponge and can absorb all this information. I love to learn and problem solve. I think it’s been a blessing to me that I didn’t come from the aviation field, because learning from all my peers has allowed me to create those relationships and get their input on what’s most important to them.

What’s the best part of your job? It’s never boring. And I have to remind myself of that when it’s so not boring that it’s actually stressful! I don’t like coming to work and doing the same thing over and over again. I like challenging myself, and, in an atmosphere like this, you can’t help but be in the middle of a problem-solving exercise every day. I’m always learning, and if I stay here for the next 20 years, I’ll still be learning.

Any unique challenges to being an engineer at an airport? We don’t ever close the runway, the tarmac or the parking garage. We’re open 24-7. So how do you get the maintenance done on that infrastructure? Being a non-hub airport, most of our flights come in at night and leave first thing in the morning so they can make connecting flights at hub airports. We have aircraft parking here every night, all year round. So, when we had to rebuild the tarmac, it was a feat of engineering and business relations with the airlines and ground support. It’s like a puzzle each time we do a construction project.

Quels sont les défis particuliers d’un ingénieur dans un aéroport? Nous ne fermons jamais la piste, l’aire de trafic ni le garage. Nous sommes ouverts 24 heures par jour, sept jours sur sept. Il va sans dire que cela complique la maintenance des infrastructures.
