FROM ONE PARENT TO ANOTHER We asked respondents to our December survey what was most important to them in choosing summer programs for their kids. The top answer: Location. Price came in a close second, followed by the type of camp and the hours it operates. You’ll find some of that information in this guide, along with places you can go to learn more. Also important? A third of respondents said “what other parents say” was a factor for them. Here, then, are a few of the tips our survey respondents shared. “Start early! Like the stores do for the displays, in winter, think summer camps.” TAMMY, COLCHESTER
Don’t let not knowing another kid/family going to a certain camp hold you back! Camp counselors are pros at making all kids feel welcomed and make new friends. If the camp seems like something your kid would love, go for it!
BARBARA, SOUTH BURLINGTON
Look closely at the hours. LIZZY, COLCHESTER
Think about the match between the camp’s activity level and your kid’s preferences. If you have a very active kid, don’t sign them up for an arts and crafts camp where they have to sit still for long periods. NICOLE, CAMBRIDGE
Send them!!! Let them spread their wings. MARY, MILTON
It is truly healthy for both adults and children to have a different experience than “just school.” CARRIE, MORETOWN
Never be afraid to ask if they have any discounts as it could mean your child could attend something that you assumed was out of reach.

F
inding summer programs for kids can be stressful. Kids VT surveyed parents and caregivers about summer camps in December, and that was a major theme in the 80-plus responses we received. The 2024 Kids VT Camp Guide aims to make the process a little easier. We’ve gathered information about 40-plus summer programs in Vermont and around the region, and we’ve tried to answer a few questions that came up in that survey, particularly about how to afford camp and how to manage when all the camps you want are full. Read on for those answers — and check out all of the ads in this guide! If you can, come to Kids FIND INFO INSIDE ON: VT’s annual Camp and School Fair on Saturday, Overnight programs February 10, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Burlington Day camps Hilton. Admission is free. It’s a chance to talk with representatives from Skills-based camps some of these programs face-to-face. You can also drill down Independent schools and find more info at campfindervt.com. We’ve Academic support updated the listings to reflect offerings in summer 2024. The good news: There’s a wide variety of options. Remember: Some camps don’t even post their schedules until spring. As a parent of teenagers who’ve attended numerous day and sleepaway camps, I can confidently report that summer programs offer all kinds of lessons that young people can’t learn at school. I’m very grateful my kids had the opportunity to spend so much time outside with friends in this beautiful state we call home. I hope yours will get to do that, too!

Mastering the Sign-Up Scramble Getting into some popular day camps is like winning the lottery — literally BY CATHY RESMER
S
ailing, printmaking, LEGO animation, working with farm animals: When it comes to summer day camps in Vermont, there are so many enticing options. Unfortunately, spots are limited. Popular programs, particularly in Chittenden County, fill up fast. In fact, when you’re reading this, it may already be too late to sign up for some of them. There will still be camps with openings in February, March and April — including many at campfindervt.com — but there are some that open registration in January or even December. Returning campers can sometimes sign up even earlier. When Kids VT surveyed parents and caregivers about summer camp at the end of last year, the sign-up scramble came up many times. One colorful comment, from Meredith Breiland of Milton, stood out: “I was able to get Taylor Swift concert tickets but not the day camps we wanted in 2023,” she wrote. “It’s way too competitive!” Breiland elaborated on her process in a follow-up email. She and her husband both work full time, she explained. “We are extremely privileged to be able to afford camp options for the summer that go beyond simple childcare and offer enrichment. At the core, however, we
6
KIDS VT CAMP GUIDE
2024
need childcare for our first and fourth graders.” Breiland is determined to find it. She’s remarkably well organized: “The Google sheet my husband and I coordinate together is complex: including colorcoding, notations, pricing, sign-up details and schedules. (It is now forecasting out to 2025.)” The couple also have flexibility in their positions to coordinate their schedules. And they’re “desk jockeys” who can jump on camp registration that opens at 8 or 9 a.m. on a weekday. “Confession: I have finished up camp registrations while on Zoom meetings,” Breiland wrote. Still, last summer, “we followed the instructions exactly — which had worked for me in the Taylor Swift ticket frenzy — and it still left us [with] a hole in our plans.” Local camp directors say the problem is real. In fact, some have announced changes to their registration systems this year, though adding more capacity is much harder, given staffing and space constraints. They offered a few suggestions to help parents in the meantime.
PLAY THE LOTTERY John Nagle, program director at the Community Sailing Center on Lake Champlain in Burlington, said the sailing center’s camps have seen a dramatic sign-up bump since the pandemic. Little Guppies, for 6- to 7-year-olds, fills up very fast. So does the Level I sailing camp for 8- to 10-year-olds. According to the center’s website, each year there are more than 1,000 campers interested in just 570 camp spots. “It’s a great problem to have, I guess,” Nagle said. Last year the center unveiled a new, more efficient online registration system that worked a little too well. Nagle said the camps sold out “really, really quickly.” Some people who started registering when it opened were halfway through when the spots ran out. He heard about parents pulling over to the side of the road and registering on their phones. After hearing “story after story” like this, the center decided to move to a lottery system this year; the Green Mountain Audubon Center recently announced a similar move.
There are still day camps with openings — including many in this guide.
The sailing center opened camp registrations for a week in January. Parents could sign up for a maximum of two camps. Once registration closed, the center went through a selection process, taking into account various factors, including whether campers had participated in sailing center camps before and whether siblings needed to be in the same session. Families that were chosen had a few days to claim their spots before the center opened them up to whoever was next on the list. “This way, hopefully, more people can get in,” Nagle said. He couldn’t say for sure yet whether the process worked as intended, since it was still going on, but he pointed to Shelburne Farms, which has been doing registration this way for years. When contacted, Megan Camp, Shelburne Farms executive vice president and program director, said its camps have used a lottery system for 20 years or so. She’s now seeing more programs adopting this approach. “It’s definitely a trend,” she said. For Shelburne Farms, the lottery eliminated the stress of being ready to sign up precisely when registration opened and kept a few families from monopolizing the open spots for multiple weeks each summer. That makes for a

different experience for those families but gives more kids access to the programs. “I know how stressful it’s been for parents,” she said. “I don’t think there’s a perfect system.”
GET ON THE WAIT LIST Camp started working at Shelburne Farms in 1983 and has seen the educational programs evolve. She recommends that parents sign up for the camp admissions lottery and, if they don’t get a spot, sign up for the wait list. “Don’t give up hope,” she said. Their camps are seeing “a lot more cancellations” than they used to. She suspects that’s true of other programs, too. “Today, there’s a good chance you’ll get in,” she said. And even if it doesn’t work out this year, Camp urged parents to sign up again next year. Kids might be more likely to get in on the second try because many camps want to make access more equitable.
TRY A DIFFERENT CAMP Even with the lottery system, it would be impossible for Shelburne Farms to meet the full demand for its camps, Camp said. That’s why she was happy when nearby New Village Farm and Bread & Butter Farm, both in Shelburne, started offering their own programs. In a similar vein, Nagle advises

parents to look at some of the joint programs that the sailing center offers with partners, including Burlington Paint & Sip Studio and GROW Prenatal & Family Center. They often have spaces after others have filled. The same is true of the more advanced sailing camps. Families can also look to programs run by schools and town recreation departments, which may not have finalized their schedules yet. Another option: Some sleepaway camps, including YMCA Camp Abnaki in North Hero and YWCA Camp Hochelaga in South Hero, offer day camps, too, and provide shuttles to and from various pick-up spots. Meredith Breiland said that this summer, she’s trying something new: sleepaway camp. Her older daughter is finally eligible, and Breiland said her alumna status gave her a boost in line. Breiland thinks that’s “ridiculous” and possibly a harbinger of what’s to come with the college application process, but she’ll take it. She signed up her daughter on November 1. “Locking this in was key to scheduling the rest of our summer,” she said. K Looking for day camps with openings? Overnight Anxiety Is my child ready for sleepaway camp? Am I? BY CATHY RESMER
I
t’s natural to be a little unsure about sending your child to sleepaway camp for the first time. Lauren Frazier, overnight camp enrollment coordinator for YMCA Camp Mi-Te-Na and Camp Foss in New Hampshire, is sending her 7-year-old daughter to Camp Foss for the first time this summer. “I’m even getting a little nervous,” she admitted. It’s possible those normal jitters are a bit more intense post-pandemic. Parents spent so much time at home with their kids that it might be a little harder to let them leave. But sleepaway camp can be a magical and transformative experience for kids, and Frazier and other camp directors point out that there are lots of things parents and camp staff can do — before and during the session— to set campers up for success.
IS IT TIME TO STAY OVERNIGHT? There’s no right age to start sending kids to sleepaway camp. Frazier said there are a handful of 7-year-olds at Camp Foss, though generally the age range is 8 to 15. The camp’s sweet spot tends to be age 10. She went to overnight camp in New Jersey, 8
KIDS VT CAMP GUIDE
2024
where she grew up. “I started at age 12, and I wish I had started earlier,” she said. Brian Roy of YMCA Camp Abnaki and Christine Perry of YWCA Camp Hochelaga said they often see first-time campers in the 10 to 12 age range. My kids were both happy campers; this summer they’re returning as a counselor and a counselor-in-training. They both eased into the overnight experience by starting with daytime sessions at their camps, but Graham started staying overnight at Camp Abnaki at age 9 and Ivy started over at Camp Hochelaga at age 8. Every kid is different. How will you know when your child is ready? Roy asks some key questions: How do they handle sleepovers with friends or family when you’re not there? When you drop them off, do they jump right in or do they need some coaxing? Most importantly: Do they want to go to sleepaway camp? If they don’t express interest, it’s probably not time yet.
CHOOSE A CAMP Picking a sleepaway camp is a big decision. If your child likes it there, they might want to keep going year after year. It can become a big part of their life.
As someone who never got attached to a camp, I didn’t fully appreciate how devoted my kids would be to theirs — and to the friends they made there. All the more reason to do your research before sending them. Talk to the camp director. Talk to other parents. Get a sense of how they hire staff and how many counselors return year after year. Pay attention to the camp’s values and mission. One of many things we loved about Camp Abnaki, for example, was its motto — “Help the other fellow” — and the way the director and staff modeled it.
GET READY TO GO Many camps offer virtual and in-person tours of the campus before the session starts. If you or your camper is a little nervous, taking a tour might make the adjustment easier. Talking with the camp director and other staff can help, too — particularly if your child takes medications or has allergies or other health challenges. Some camps are set up to cater specifically to children with serious illnesses or chronic conditions, such as Double H Ranch in Lake Luzerne, N.Y. “Double H’s expert staff and medical
Camp Abnaki
team are here to help care for you and your child throughout the entire camp process, from submitting an application to departure day,” creative engagement director Julia Martini said. Perry noted that this year, all Hochelaga staff will receive training on mental health issues and best practices for dealing with them. At Camp Mi-Te-Na and Camp Foss, every camper gets a phone call from camp staff within a month of registering. “We make ourselves available to everyone who has questions,” Frazier said. Brian DeGroat of Pok-O-MacCready Camps advises parents to ask questions — and include their kids in the process. Roy, at Camp Abnaki, suggests that first-time campers or those who are nervous pack something that they can look forward to using at camp, such as a Rubik’s cube or a new book in a favorite series, that will also serve as a distraction during quiet times. If your child needs white noise or air blowing on them to fall asleep, consider packing a battery-powered fan. Also, kids should be prepared to surrender their screens: Most camps don’t allow devices such as tablets or smartphones.

ENGAGE APPROPRIATELY DURING THE SESSION Saying goodbye and leaving your child at camp can be rough for parents and campers alike. Ken Picard, Seven Days staff writer — and father of two campers — has some advice: “Be like a Band-Aid and take off quickly! While many parents like to make sure their child gets settled into their bunk, especially for their first camp stay, it’s best that parents say their goodbyes and begone.” Frazier agrees that for campers, “the first day is the hardest.” They often haven’t bonded with their cabinmates yet and haven’t settled into camp life. She warns parents that letters from the first day can have a negative tone. Camp staffers will generally counsel parents: Resist the urge to intervene. Counselors are trained to handle homesickness. Frazier said that, in most cases, camp staff will not allow campers to call home, because it makes homesickness worse. Though “if we have gone through all the steps of our process, we have used it as a last resort,” she said. “Of course, if the parents need to speak with their camper because of a family emergency or along those lines, we have been able to arrange that.” Some camp staff will check in proactively with new families. At Camp Abnaki, all first-time families get a phone call or email from a counselor in the first three days to give an update on how the camper is doing. It can help to see photographic evidence that your child is, in fact, participating in camp life. Many programs take photos and post them to a special website or social media group that you’ll learn about at drop-off. At Camp Foss, Frazier said a staffer takes between 300 and 1,100 photos a day and uploads them to a service the camp uses to control access to
them. That service also uses facial recognition to alert parents to new photos of their child. Campers will also appreciate care packages, though camps often have restrictions around sending food. We used to send comic books or MAD magazines, or items the kids might have lost, such as a water bottle or flashlight. What they loved most were the LEGOshaped fruit gummies my wife made; she always sent enough for the kids’ cabinmates, too.
There’s no right age to start sending kids to sleepaway camp.
MANAGE YOUR STICKER SHOCK If you’re looking into sleepaway camp for the first time, don’t dismiss it when you see the price tag. It’s true: Overnight camp can cost thousands of dollars. All that round-the-clock care isn’t cheap. But there are things you can do to defray the costs — see the list on page 12. You can budget for it, too; my wife created a camp account and put part of every paycheck toward it all year long. Also remember that there are people out there who are passionate about summer camp and will donate to help other children access the experience. When one of Graham’s friends was interested in attending Abnaki but couldn’t afford to pay, the camp director worked with us to find funding for him. He went for years and loved it. Picking the two of them up at the end of the session — and hearing them bid farewell to their counselors and new friends — always made the experience seem worth it. K

LOOK FOR CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS. Many programs raise money for “camperships” that defray costs for families in need of financial aid. Some community organizations do this, too. For example, Upper Valley families can apply to the LISTEN Summer Camp Scholarship Program, which provides need-based aid to Upper Valley children ages 6 to 14 for one week of camp. Application guidelines are available at listencs. org/summer-camp-scholarships. The Chauncey B. Warner Foundation offers assistance to families in Franklin County. “Last year we had almost 200 kids apply and awarded grants to 174 children,” said Sarah Allerton, chair of the foundation’s campership committee. f you want to send your child(ren) to camp but think it’s out of reach financially, don’t despair: Lots of programs offer some form of financial assistance. Some accept tuition on a sliding scale, allowing parents to pay discounted tuition, knowing that others will choose to pay more. Other camps, including those offered by the Flynn in Burlington and Lake Champlain Maritime Museum in Vergennes, use a pay-what-youcan model to make the experience affordable for all. It’s worth researching ways to bring down the cost. Here are a few suggestions:

For more than 14 years, LetGoYourMind has offered age-appropriate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) programs using LEGO bricks. More than 20,000 kids have benefited from its hands-on, student-centered curriculum. Guided by outstanding teaching staff, students learn the basics of simple machines and robotics and get an introduction to stop-motion. With every LEGO brick creation, students experience the engineering process — including building, coding, testing and design modification. At these programs, campers will work with motors, gears and simple machines; program robotics; create stop-motion animation; and nurture a passion for learning and playing with Minecraft.
This day camp, located at Mater Christi School, gives children the chance to spend time exploring, making art, playing games and appreciating the beautiful Burlington area. The MCS Summer Camp is for children ages 3 to 8 (entering preschool through entering third grade in fall 2024). All campers must be fully potty-trained. The camp is designed to cater to a wide range of ages and interests. Each week has a different focus that drives activities and excursions (for example, in STEAM week, there’s a field trip to the ECHO Leahy Center for Lake Champlain, and children perform science experiments on campus). MCS Summer Camp has daily games, sports, crafts and water activities built into a flexible schedule. The goal is to provide a fun summer experience filled with activities that engage all campers.
