If you’ve lived in Vermont for any length of time, it’s a safe bet that you’ve found something to love — whether that’s craft beer or creemees, swimming holes or ski slopes. As luck would have it, you’re about to discover a slew of new favorites. The Seven Daysies are back to celebrate what’s great about our state.
Since 2003, Seven Days has been inviting locals to vote in hundreds of categories that highlight why we’re lucky to live here. Vermont is no Vegas, but we’ve really hit the jackpot with the businesses, people and places in our midst. So for the Daysies’ 21st year — Blackjack! — we took our chances with a Sin City theme for our annual readers’ choice awards.
Make that Win City. This year’s Daysies issue recognizes 237 winners and nearly 900 finalists in categories ranging from best bookstore to burger, festival to farmstand, tattoo parlor to teahouse.
It feels good to give ’em all some love, especially now. Our last Daysies issue was published shortly after 2023’s catastrophic flooding, when many places in these pages were under water — metaphorically if no longer literally. Some of the same communities were hit by heavy rains again earlier this month. It’s been a hard year, and the fact that so many past winners have retained Daysies status is a testament to their value and resilience.
You can bet your bottom dollar there are new Daysies winners, too. Looking
to learn more about this place we call home sweet home? Let this issue serve as both an ode and a guide to the best of Vermont, according to Vermonters. Roll the dice: Flip to nearly any page, close your eyes and point, and end up with a directive for an adventure.
You’ll find yourself headed to a new picnic spot, public beach or place to dance — and with some local bands to play on the drive there. There’s more practical intel, too: Voters weighed in on where to get a mortgage, a haircut and your tires changed. Sharing is caring, after all.
Except when it comes to our awards party later this week. What happens in Las Daysies stays in Las Daysies!
CAROLYN FOX
The Daysies are the locals’ guide to Vermont, brought to you by Seven Days. Each summer, we invite our readers to weigh in on hundreds of categories to identify their favorite things about this state.
For the first round of voting, thousands of Vermonters submit write-in nominations. We tally the votes, then present the finalists for Round 2 of voting — multiple choice-style. When the votes warrant it, we divide categories into “inside Chittenden County” and “outside Chittenden County” fields in order to shine a light on businesses beyond the populous Burlington area.
The top vote-getter in every category wins the Daysie, and all finalists earn invites to our summertime awards party on the Lake Champlain waterfront. Party proceeds benefit the winner of the best nonprofit organization.

Casa Real is ready to party, and Vermonters are there for it. Almost from the day the 150-seat restaurant opened, the lines to eat have been as impressive as the mammoth margaritas, hefty burritos and mountains of guacamole made tableside. Servers bustle nonstop between tables, the bar is always hopping, and any celebration is an excuse for a spirited maraca parade.
The humming spot, best known as the former location of Junior’s Italian, boasts a multipage menu of mostly Tex-Mex and Cal-Mex classics, from crunchy chimichangas to crisp birria tacos to Hawaiian fajitas served in a pineapple.
Co-owner Eduardo Fuentes, a native of Guadalajara, Mexico, acknowledged that Casa Real caters to northern New England palates. “If we open with authentic Mexican, most people don’t like it — too spicy,” Fuentes said. “Our customers are you guys.”
According to Daysies voters, the restaurant has nailed it. The reception to Casa Real has been so positive that Fuentes said the team sped up plans to open a second, larger restaurant in Williston called Casa Grande. They are going big — literally. Colchester • casarealvt.com

As many of you recall, Hong opened her little food cart on Church Street in April of 2000. She spoke no English, so it was very di cult for her at first. It took some time, but with hard work and determination she became a big success. She grew sort of a cult following and eventually became a Burlington Icon! She became so beloved that the community banded together and helped fund the move into her own restaurant. Her humble story and award-winning dumplings caught the attention of Guy Fieri. He came to Burlington to meet her and featured Hong on his famous TV show, “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives” in 2020. Since then, Hong’s has become a destination where folks come from all over America to see her and enjoy her dumplings and sauces. This is an incredibly exciting opportunity for the right person to take Hong’s to the next level. A solid foundation has been built and the potential is unlimited! Hong would like to express her gratitude to Seven Days for their support over the years. She will be forever grateful to all of her many customers and friends who believed in her and helped her open her restaurant. Hong loves all of you and will miss you. She feels very lucky that she came to Burlington.
Anyone interested may contact her at dumplinglady@yahoo.com or Lisali10009@gmail.com, or by mail at Hong’s Chinese Dumplings, 81 Pearl St., Burlington, VT 05401

Looking for the hottest egg sandwich around? You’ll find it at the Café HOT., a Burlington breakfast and brunch spot that’s served self-described “killer food” since 2021.
Don’t let “killer food” fool you. The vintage, yellow-lit menu board spells out the kitchen’s ethos: WE ARE NO KILL NO MEAT. The vegetarian café doesn’t need meat to offer a menu jam-packed with creative and delicious sandwiches.
Customers can choose among breakfast sandwiches stuffed inside homemade milk buns, biscuits and crunchy vegan wraps. The Raven is something to crow about: It features the crispiest fried egg atop garlicky “black cat raven sauce,” crunchy tostada, avocado, miso sauce and chopped herbs, all piled on a soft milk bun made in-house. All together, it’s a textural dream.
And don’t sleep on Café HOT.’s “chicken-fried egg” sandwiches (#8 and #9 on the menu). In an ode to the best restaurant meals of 2023, Bon Appétit praised the “craggy, crisp-crusted slab of fluffy scrambled eggs” between the buns. HOT. stuff, indeed.

At Waterbury’s Prohibition Pig, you can buy the farm. Or rather, you can order the Buy the Farm! platter: massive piles of pork, brisket, hot sausage, ribs and wings with a choice of three sides. It serves four to six people, so call a few friends and quote the restaurant’s tagline: “Meat Here.”
They’ll come running. This barbecue spot is helmed by the culinary geniuses behind Hen of the Wood, who bring their love of hospitality, flavor and fun to smoked meats. Led by head chef Bernadette Pearson, the team gussies up mac and cheese — a staple barbecue side — with Jasper Hill Farm’s Chef Shred cheese and cornbread crumbs. The fries are made with duck fat. The pastrami? Cured in-house.
You’ll be tempted to pair a succulent chopped pork plate or gooey fried pimento cheese balls with a beer fresh from the on-site brewery (enter around the corner from the restaurant). Curious drinkers should also know that Pro Pig’s Liquor Society serves flights of fancy from the restaurant’s bar-to-ceiling booze wall, be they Dead Bird Brandy from close-to-home Shelburne Orchards or rare whisk(e)ys from around the globe.
The smoked meat is hot, the drinks are cold, and you’re sure to leave full.

How do you turn a fleeting Vermont growing season into a thriving year-round farmstand?
With a little Mazza magic — and a heap of hard work by two generations of the Mazza family and their dedicated team. On its 350-acre Colchester farm, Sam Mazza’s Farm Market, Bakery and Greenhouses offers pick-your-own berries and a bounty of vegetables, harvested May through October. June brings Strawberry Fest; July features a concert series; fall arrives with hayrides to the pumpkin patch, a three-mile corn maze, and the giant pumpkin weigh-in and craft fair, followed by winter’s Christmas trees, wreaths and garlands.
This well-stocked market’s got you covered for breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert. It sells eggs, milk, cheese and bread as well as Vermont-made specialty foods — including Mazza Family Meatballs and meat pies — and fine wines. Ovens are hot seven days a week as in-store bakers turn out doughnuts, cookies, cupcakes, breads and their famous pies. The lawn and garden section stands ready to equip anyone inspired to start their own mini farm. Colchester • sammazzafarms.com

When we think of “corner stores,” we may think of the urban version: convenient down-the-block markets where folks pop in for toothpaste, milk or an afterschool treat. But in Vermont’s small towns, country stores play the same role — and few do it as well as the one on the Jericho Center Village Green.
In a post celebrating its Daysies nomination, the store’s team said, “I mean, we’re on the corner of our driveway, so that counts.” You bet it does.
The Jericho Center Country Store has attracted generations of devotees with its pantry staples, penny candy, gas pumps, seasonal creemee window and neighborly chitchat. These days, its deli and grill are a draw for breakfast and lunch, serving egg sandwiches, burgers and Vermonter panini daily.
In biz since 1807, the Jericho Center Country Store is as classic as it gets; the Vermont Retail & Grocers Association recognized it as the longest-running store in the state. After 22 years of ownership by the St. Amour family, it changed hands in June and is ready for the next 200 years.

Looking for a cider that’s “as high as Mount Mansfield and as dry as they come”? A tallboy of Stowe Cider’s High & Dry won’t leave you … well, you know.
All the cidery’s apples are sourced within 150 miles, though they’re sometimes combined with far-flung ingredients such as ginger, lemon and orange (in the year-round Mountain Glow) or blue-raspberry gummy bears (a seasonal offering). Whether the fresh-pressed result is dry and appley or electric blue, Stowe Cider’s signature is drinkability. These ciders are made for crushing at the top of the mountain, on the river, at an outdoor concert or with a cider doughnut on a perfect fall day.
The taproom is a destination in its own right, with hoppin’ live music and a barbecue restaurant, Shakedown Street BBQ & Grill, that pays tribute to the Grateful Dead. Something’s shakin’, indeed. Stowe • stowecider.com

Charlie-O’s has had a hell of a year.
In business since 1976, the grizzled veteran of Vermont dive bars is located in a Montpelier building that’s hosted a bar since the Civil War. In the past 12 months, it was hit by twin disasters of fire and water.
First came the July 2023 flooding that devastated the Capital City. Having already survived the Great Flood of 1927, the bar refused to capitulate. Charlie-O’s bartenders served drinks outside on the veranda while the old dive was cleaned up by staff and dedicated patrons. By early October, the bar reopened. Then, in the middle of a Halloween show, a fire spread from a neighboring building and the bar was evacuated, closing its doors for seven months.
Like an indefatigable prizefighter, Charlie-O’s picked itself up off the mat, bloodied but unbowed. In May, the doors opened once again, welcoming back faithful denizens who missed the pool tables and pinball, the live music and gloriously gritty vibes.
Are there swankier spots to get a drink in town? Sure. But the self-styled “dive for nice people” packs plenty of charm to go with its timeless durability. Come floods, fire or future apocalypse, locals look to Charlie-O’s for cold drinks to take the edge off these wild times.

There’s nothing like praise from a fellow professional. On a recent morning at the Cosmic Grind in Burlington, Lydia Beaulieu watched appreciatively as Cole Thornton brewed her order. He deftly pulled the shot, poured in steamed oat milk and swirled a design into her dirty chai before handing it over with a smile.
Beaulieu plies the same trade elsewhere. She knows it takes serious skills to manage a powerful, often finicky espresso machine while also juggling ingredients, drinks and customers — and making everyone feel welcome.
“Being a barista is more than just making coffee,” Beaulieu said. Since Thornton joined the Cosmic Grind’s core team when it opened more than seven years ago, his warmth and personal style have made him memorable. The Winooski native fell in love with coffee shops as a high school student. He liked coffee and, just as important, Thornton said, “I made friends there.”
He continues to do so. The barista addresses all who enter the narrow storefront as “friend” and lavishes attention on their drinks as if they are the only ones in the shop.
Coffeehouses “have always been a respite for me,” Thornton said. “I’m constantly reminded that we can be that for people.”

Some swear by the Strawberry Sage. Others adhere to the Elderberry. And plenty of the parched prefer Peach Out. All are aficionados of Aqua ViTea, a Vermont kombucha king that has fermented and fizzed its way into fans’ hearts for 17 years.
The Middlebury-based beverage company, founded by Salisbury resident Jeff Weaber in 2007, prides itself on concocting cultured tea drinks with low sugar and organic ingredients that are good for the gut. Turmeric Sunrise includes a kick of cayenne pepper and pink peppercorn in a blend of black and green teas, apple cider, lemon juice, turmeric juice, and vanilla extract. Pineapple Lemonade is a sweet and citrusy thirst quencher. Strawberry Sage, which has a hint of peppermint, won a 2024 Good Food Award. The artist-designed bottles and cans nod to the vivid flavors inside.
Two years ago, Aqua ViTea launched a line of probiotic seltzers to stake a claim in the crowded market of carbonated drinks that Gen Zers guzzle by the gallon. Aqua Seltzers’ four flavors — Cucumber + Mint, Pomegranate + Cherry, Grapefruit + Thyme and Raspberry + Lime — incorporate a dose of “functional” probiotics to aid digestion as much as dehydration. BEST SMALL LIVE MUSIC HOT SPOT INSIDE CHITTENDEN COUNTY
Though small in stature, Radio Bean has been the beating heart of Burlington’s music scene for more than 20 years. The cute name may conjure a coffee shop with a crunchy playlist, but the neon sign out front hints at the club’s rockin’ character and rustic, somehow electrically cottagecore charm.
Five nights a week, the walls pulsate with everything from jazz to honky-tonk to punk as multicolor spotlights illuminate the room. While the sun sets and the (thankfully inexpensive) drinks flow, bands, DJs and solo acts take their turn onstage, here and at the adjoining Light Club Lamp Shop. It’s that delicious cocktail of sounds — from University of Vermont students putting on their first show to nationally touring artists such as Arc Iris, the Barr Brothers and Vapors of Morphine — that endears this venue to music lovers of all ages.
Radio Bean narrowly avoided a fiery fate this spring when an apartment upstairs caught flames. The listening community showed up, raising money and offering to help with cleanup. Now that the Bean is back in action, they continue to lavish the club with love, singing and dancing all night long.

Nothing quite captures Vermont’s mountain spirit like bluegrass, and the Tenderbellies are no strangers to the sound. Blending guitar, bass, mandolin and harmonica, they’ve mastered the genre’s yearning yet playful melodies. Perhaps the secret to their authenticity is the tight-knit nature of the band, whose six members met as students at Champlain Valley Union High School. They’ve been jamming since an impromptu show in 2013 — an origin story just as unexpected as the improvised riffs in their songs.
Over years gigging at local bars and festivals, the Tenderbellies have honed their ability to weave together rock, jazz and, of course, bluegrass influences. In 2022, they released their debut album, One by One, and last year they celebrated their 10th anniversary by playing it live at South Burlington’s Higher Ground nightclub. Since then, the band has traveled to the West Coast and back with shows that are at once freeing and deeply rooted in musical tradition. tenderbellies.com

Vermont Public listeners have long known and appreciated the in-depth reporting from “Brave Little State,” the listener-powered podcast that answers a question posed, then voted on, by the public. Each episode takes a deep dive into what’s old, new, nifty or nettlesome in the Green Mountain landscape — from the dating scene in small communities to the challenges of finding a primary care physician to the acquired taste for Phish, Vermont’s most celebrated jam band. Going above and beyond its consistently solid journalism, “Brave Little State” tackled an ambitious topic this year with “Recognized,” a three-part series exploring the thorny issue of Indigenous identity in Vermont. While many news outlets have reported on the controversy surrounding the four self-proclaimed and staterecognized Abenaki tribes, “Recognized” spent two years fearlessly examining the historical record, including Vermont Public’s own prior reporting. Brave indeed, and well deserving of a Daysie. vermontpublic.org

Do you need a steampunk lighting fixture? An eight-foot-tall Cor-Ten steel bear, complete with claws and teeth? Tassels on everything?
Each autumn, the Stowe Foliage Arts Festival brings more than 150 vendors with all kinds of unlikely creations — as well as more expected craft-fair fare, such as high-quality pottery, jewelry, stained glass and handmade textiles — to the Topnotch Field in Stowe.
Some of the vendors make things you won’t see elsewhere. Sunapee, N.H.’s Mauli McDonald incorporates taxidermy into surprisingly tasteful bouquets and wreaths. Others showcase items both practical and, um, less so: South Burlington blacksmith Ben Williams makes stunning chef’s knives and viking seaxes. And, of course, there are many Vermonty offerings, such as nature photos by Ian Clark and Brandon Kline.
The 2024 edition will run from October 11 to 13 and feature food trucks, live music and Celtic dance. Even if you aren’t normally crazy for crafts, you might enjoy an afternoon of sampling maple bourbon and petting llamas under the fall foliage. Just watch out for bears.

Zenbarn Farms is hard to miss as you travel on Route 100 in Waterbury Center: The front lawn has huge wooden “420” and “kind” signs, decorated with string lights and punctuated with green pot leaves. Inside, the spacious, mural-filled dispensary is divided into two retail areas. The front room offers hemp-derived CBD products and gifts, including tees, sweatshirts, paraphernalia and stuffies that resemble smiling pot leaves. (Need a laugh? Get a stuffie joint for the family dog to carry around in its mouth.)
In the back room, customers can browse full-spectrum edibles, vapes, pre-rolls, topicals, tinctures and flower, the last of which Zenbarn sells deli-style by the gram, allowing one to mix and match. On a recent visit, the budtenders were helpful and informative but pressure-free. Plus, the adult-use dispensary is open seven days, which, naturally, we like. A good place for finding your moment of Zen.

Antiques lovers know it’s all about the thrill of the hunt — the chance to stumble on a unique or surprising discovery. Five Corners Antiques in Essex Junction provides a one-stop shop for that kind of quest, combining under one roof multiple dealers who sell early American furniture, collectible trinkets, old tools, vintage artwork and all manner of historic housewares.
A recent visit revealed timeworn treasures: a blue-painted rustic jelly cupboard with dovetailed boards; a turn-of-the-century theodolite, a measuring tool used by surveyors, in a wooden case with a label from the Gurley Company of Troy, N.Y.; an array of silver serving pieces; and several display cases holding vintage costume jewelry. On a shelf in the front, Five Corners sells the waxes, oils and polishes needed to restore these finds to their former glory.
Five Corners occupies the second floor of an enclave of operators trafficking in old stuff, including Mason Brothers Architectural Salvage Warehouse and the Brothers Furniture of Vermont repair and restoration shop. Fittingly, even the building is an antique — the former Snowflake Canning Company, which packaged corn in tin cans in the early 20th century. Essex Junction • Facebook

It was a tough year for Onion River Outdoors. Last summer’s catastrophic flooding in downtown Montpelier left the specialty bike shop, an institution in central Vermont’s outdoor-rec scene, a muddy and waterlogged mess. But it’s a testament to the shop’s staying power and customer loyalty that, when the going got tough, the tough got back in the saddle and made it to the top again. A Daysies favorite among pedal pushers of all stripes, Onion River Outdoors is as much about creating community as it is about selling top-quality gear and providing expert service and repairs. The shop organizes such annual events as the Muddy Onion, an early-spring gravel ride; the Frozen Onion, a fat-tire ride on snow; and the Tour de Creemee gravel grinder; as well as weekly shop rides and periodic mountain bike clinics. Come hell or high water, this is where the rubber meets the road.

Musty, yellowed pages and overcrowded shelves may characterize the stereotypical used-book store, but Crow Bookshop flies in the face of that image. Its cozy space on Burlington’s Church Street Marketplace has warm wooden floors, rolling library ladders and books — new, used and remainders (the industry term for publishers’ extras) — impeccably organized and lined up flush on its shelves.
No must. No fust.
Sections are labeled on little wooden signs: art history to zoology and everything in between. Two armchairs invite lingering.
Keith Terwillegar started Crow in 1995. While Borders has come and gone, this beloved indie remains, selling staff favorites and new adult hardcovers at 20 percent off list price, new children’s hardcovers at 15 percent off, and used books and remainders for half or less. Its exacting standards for used books mean shoppers won’t find cracked spines, soiled pages, highlighting or writing.
Crow sells a smattering of note cards and puzzles, but no coffee drinks, scented candles or other frivolous distractions. This is a book lover’s bookshop.

It seems fitting that a business collective pairing two of the world’s most ancient forms of body art should take home double Daysies this year. The barbering profession dates back thousands of years to ancient Egypt, while the ritual of marking human skin is believed to predate written alphabets. Suffice it to say, we humans have been altering and embellishing our bodies for as long as there’s been someone around to ask, “Does my hair look even in the back?”
No need to pose that question at Burlington’s Imperial Barber Co., whose team of five barbers provides side parts, buzz cuts, pompadours and fades with razor-sharp precision. You can even book them for weddings to gussy up the groom and his groomsmen before the ceremony.
In the market for a more permanent alteration? Check out the impressive body of artwork at the adjoining Imperial Tattoo Co. We have an inkling that its clever designs will get under your skin. Burlington • theimperialcollective.com

Dreaming of an idyllic countryside wedding that’s not too far into the countryside? In the Venn diagram of Vermont beauty, authenticity and geographic proximity, this picturesque 54-acre farm in Cambridge, just 45 minutes from Burlington, hits the sweet spot. Established in 1914, the family-run operation initially specialized in dairy before diversifying into beef, field crops, maple and, since 2008, events.
Simply put, “Boyden Barn is a magical venue,” one bride wrote on the wedding planning website the Knot. Say your vows surrounded by lush greenery and mountains, then dance the night away — with up to 150 guests — in a rustic barn featuring wooden beams, a vaulted ceiling and vintage chandeliers. Weather permitting, you can celebrate outdoors on the patio, pavilion and lower farm grounds.
Of course, it takes meticulous planning to pull off a spectacular party. Hardworking staff connect couples to caterers and other preferred vendors, while an in-house team manages bar service. Guests who drink need not fret over driving: Nearby Smugglers’ Notch Resort offers shuttle service. Pop the Champagne! Cambridge • boydenbarn.com

In the florist shop that fronts Claussen’s Florist, Greenhouse & Perennial Farm, customers can put together a bouquet from a selection of stems that mirrors the colorful bounty of plants and shrubs outside: deep-purple lisianthus, periwinkle hydrangea, white snapdragons, bright yellow mums, and gerbera daisies in pink, red and orange. Shoppers also can choose from premade arrangements, ranging in price from $25 to $90 and bursting atop pretty porcelain pots or glass vases.
In short, Claussen’s knows flowers. For more than 50 years, the business has cultivated a following of plant lovers who benefit from the staff’s expertise, including that of florist and retail manager Brenda Wheel and her team of floral designers.
The florist and gift shop also sells pillows and paper goods, throw rugs and dish towels, ceramics and stuffed animals, and handcrafted glass chimes in a rainbow of bird or triangle shapes. Just 30 minutes from Burlington, Bolton Valley Resort serves up slope-side action to Vermonters all year round. In warmer weather, the 5,000-plus-acre resort offers mountain biking, hiking, scenic lift rides and a beast of a disc golf course. But the colder months bring the thrills and chills that have earned Bolton Valley its first Daysie. Skiers and snowboarders hit the pow — an average of 312 inches of snowfall annually — on 71 trails, accessible via six lifts. Bolton also offers the rare chance to enjoy the slopes after dark with night skiing. Backcountry and Nordic skiers can get their glide on along 100 kilometers of trails.
Unlike many ski resorts in Vermont that are now corporate-owned, Bolton Valley was founded in 1966 by a local, Ralph DesLauriers, and is owned today by the DesLauriers family and a small group of investors. (After selling the ski area in 1997, the fam bought it back in 2017.) Fittingly, they’ve doubled down on the family focus, with plenty of children’s programs and approachable beginner trails — not to mention smaller crowds and budget-friendlier prices than larger resorts. An adult full-day ticket during peak times costs $197 at Stowe Mountain Resort, compared to $99 at Bolton Valley.
Count that as the 99th reason locals love this slope.

BEST PLACE TO CAMP
When Vermonters want to get away from it all, they really mean it. Burton Island State Park is about as remote as you can get within the Vermont State Parks system. The 253-acre island and popular camping spot is only accessible by boat and free of cars, making this the ultimate secluded site to commune with nature and scarf down s’mores.
To get there, BYO boat or catch the Island Runner ferry from Kill Kare State Park. Eighty-one varieties of fish inhabit these waters, including small- and largemouth bass, northern pike, and common carp.
The island was farmland for decades, but its fallow fields are now home to wildflowers, wildlife, and, for shorter spells, day visitors and campers. Due to high demand, campsite reservations open up 11 months in advance. Choose from three rental cabins, 14 tent sites, 26 lean-tos and four even more remote tent sites on the island’s south side.
Lest that last one sound a little too rustic, the main campground has Wi-Fi, running water and the Burton Island Bistro, which sells basic camping goods and made-to-order breakfasts and lunches — using fresh herbs and veggies from the chef’s personal garden, no less.
