oats were the transportation of choice for early Vermont explorers such as Samuel de Champlain — Lake Champlain’s namesake. Today, however, the best way to cruise around Burlington is on two wheels. An extensive network of dedicated routes makes biking popular among locals and tourists alike. Free from cars, the Burlington Bike Path stretches eight miles along Lake Champlain, linking parks, pit stops and perfect photo ops. It’s also part of a 10mile self-guided biking loop called Cycle the City, promoted by Local Motion, Burlington’s advocacy group for peoplepowered transportation. To rent bikes and grab a map, stop by Local Motion’s Trailside Center, located right on the bike path at 1 Steele Street, Suite 103, or visit localmotion.org. Once you’ve got your wheels, let the sightseeing begin.

Grâce à un vaste réseau cyclable, le vélo est très populaire auprès des gens du coin et des touristes. Interdite aux voitures, la piste cyclable de Burlington, qui s’étend sur 13 km le long du lac Champlain, passe par des parcs, des aires de repos et une foule de lieux parfaits pour la photo. De plus, elle fait partie d’un circuit en boucle autoguidé de 16 km, appelé Cycle the City, dont Local Motion, groupe en faveur du transport non motorisé à Burlington, fait la promotion. Le nom de ce commerce évoque le maillot noir (maglia nera) remis à la dernière personne qui franchit la ligne d’arrivée du Giro d’Italia, épreuve cycliste de longue date. N’hésitez donc pas à prendre votre temps durant votre propre aventure! Le moment est venu de rejoindre la piste cyclable. Dirigez-vous vers le nord en direction de Waterfront Park, un espace vert bordant le lac sur 275 mètres. Restez sur la piste, car les vélos sont interdits sur la promenade très fréquentée par les piétons, mais rappelez-vous d’y retourner pour vous balader et faire un arrêt à Splash at the Boathouse. Ouvert pour la saison en mai, ce restaurant, qui surplombe la marina, est l’endroit rêvé pour déguster cocktails et fruits de mer et admirer le coucher de soleil. Waterfront Park
FUEL UP Need a jolt of caffeine for the day ahead? Order an artfully prepared cappuccino and a pastry at Maple Street’s Maglianero café. Its name refers to the black jersey (maglia nera) awarded to the last finisher in the long-standing Giro d’Italia cycling event. Let that serve as a reminder that it’s OK to take your time on this journey. From there, it’s a quick pedal to join the bike path. Head north toward Waterfront Park, a grassy space with 900 feet of lakeshore. Stay on the trail, as bikes aren’t allowed on the pedestrian-heavy boardwalk, but make a mental note to return later for a stroll and a stop at Splash at the Boathouse. Open for the season in May, the restaurant overlooks bobbing boats and is a favorite spot for cocktails, seafood and sunsets. TOUR THE SHORE North of Waterfront Park, the bike path shimmies past the brand-new Burlington Skate Park and the Community Sailing Center. A small incline leads to North Beach. Along the sandy shoreline, you’ll find picnic shelters, a snack bar serving topnotch cheese fries and other fast food, and kiosks for kayak rentals and bike service, should you need it. There’s a 45-acre campground here, too, with 69 tent sites. The quieter Leddy Beach, another 1.5 miles up the bike path, has a 1,500-foot swath of sand to sink tired toes into, plus tennis courts and an ice rink. When the weather is warm, detour here for a secluded swim before the Cycle the City loop veers east to the

Ethan Allen Tower. This medieval-looking structure was actually built from local red stone in 1905, on land once belonging to Revolutionary War hero Ethan Allen. The memorial opens for the season on Mother’s Day. (Call 802-864-0123 to confirm schedule.) ISLAND GETAWAY Not much of a history buff? Skip the tower and stray from the Cycle the City route by continuing up the bike trail to Charlie’s Boathouse. With picnic tables, a porch swing and chatty owners, it’s a fine place to gaze at the lake and pause for a snack. Then it’s over the Winooski River Bridge to the Colchester Causeway you go. This five-mile gravel stretch — once a railbed — juts into Lake Champlain for incredible views on both sides. But the Causeway stops just 200 feet short of linking to the scenic Lake Champlain Islands. For fantastic biking along island beaches, farms and vineyards, you’ll need to hop aboard Local Motion’s Island Line Bike Ferry. It runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Fridays, weekends and holidays starting May 27, and then seven days a week during the summer. Round-trip tickets are $5 to $8; kids under 7 are free. GOING ‘NOWHERE’ FAST Back on the Cycle the City loop, you’d be remiss to roll by the “Bridge

to Nowhere” without stopping. Don’t bother trying to cross this soaring wooden arch; due to well-intentioned laws gone awry, the local oddity leads … nowhere. But it’s worth a pause to ponder what could have been. At the nearby Intervale Center, 11 farms grow everything from asparagus to zucchini on 700 acres of rich, river-fed soil. Even richer are the community gatherings here, which draw more than 8,000 residents for food and concerts in the warm-weather months. Park your bike for a free public tour of the Intervale on the fourth Friday of the month from April through October. Or explore at your leisure, visiting Half Pint Farm for heirloom tomatoes or Sugarsnap for gooseberries. HILLTOP EDUCATION From low farmland, climb back up into the city, past the Mount Calvary and Greenmount cemeteries to the brick buildings of the University of Vermont. Here, the Fleming Museum of Art displays 25,000 objects of art and anthropology, and the burial place of John Dewey honors the Burlington-born educator and philosopher. Continue your college tour with a wheel through Champlain College and a look at Coolidge Hall, where Vermont-born President Calvin Coolidge was married in 1905. Then hit the brakes for the steep spin down Maple Street to rejoin the bike path at Perkins Pier. COLORFUL COOLDOWN Your loop is complete, but no sightseeing trip would be without a creemee — the Vermont nickname for soft-serve ice cream. It’s a short spin to Burlington Bay Market & Café, where the creemee window is a local landmark and the best-selling flavor is a delicious maple. From the spacious outdoor patio, the color-soaked sunsets over the lake are even better. 12 BTVMAGAZINE.COM

ermont has a rich history of innovative creative expression. It’s home to the country’s first state craft center, Frog Hollow, in Burlington; the world-renowned radical puppet circus Bread and Puppet Theater; and the largest public collection of work by folk icon Grandma Moses, at Bennington Museum. A haven for makers and artisans who prefer a rural backdrop and way of life, Vermont is also known for its independent spirit and community values. So in these hills reside contemporary artists in a broad range of disciplines, from sculpture to comic arts. (The state even selects the country’s only cartoonist laureate.) For a glimpse into the vibrant scene, head to these acclaimed art institutions in and around Burlington.

Shelburne Museum’s sprawling 45-acre grounds contain something for everyone. More than two dozen 19th- and 20th-century buildings were transported to this picturesque location at the behest of heiress and collector Electra Havemeyer Webb. When the full grounds open for the season in May, visitors can wander through a lighthouse, an 1890s jail and the restored Lake Champlain steamboat Ticonderoga — before or after a spin on the vintage carousel. Folk-art aficionados will be awed by the museum’s bounty, which includes quilts, weather vanes and a barn filled to the brim with circus memorabilia. “Birds of a Feather,” on view in the year-round Pizzagalli Center for Art and Education through May 1, includes rare and historically significant wooden decoys from masters of the craft. “Painting a Nation” highlights the museum’s vast collection, featuring works by notable American painters Winslow Homer, Grandma Moses and Andrew Wyeth, among others. And “32 Degrees: The Art of Winter” explores the artistic dimensions of snow and ice through works by Claude Monet and Vermont’s legendary “Snowflake” Bentley. It offers a unique take on a season that, in many ways, defines this state. Yet springtime may be the best season to visit Shelburne Museum. The extensive gardens, planted with hundreds of lilacs, are beginning to bud and blossom.

Its BCA Center, a charming brick building that was once the city’s firehouse, operates three gallery spaces that celebrate diverse artistic expression in everchanging exhibits, creating intersections between local and national artists and sparking an arts dialogue. Through April 9, “Dysfunction” brings together 10 working ceramic artists to challenge the assumption that work in clay is primarily practical. The playful show aims to shake things up with bold lines, bright colors and political content. Also on view is the three-artist exhibit “Navigating Memory: Exploring Place” and a solo show, “Carrie Dickason: Industry Practice,” which comments on consumer culture. Beginning April 15, visitors can see the industrial work of Cal Lane, who cuts intricate lacework patterns into steel and iron, transforming wheelbarrows, shovels and fuel tanks into something between sculpture and textile. Opened in 1931 in an impressive Colonial Revival building on the University of Vermont campus, the Fleming Museum is Vermont’s premier institution for art and artifacts from around the world. Visitors are invited to immerse themselves in the permanent collection, with 25,000 objects from Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas. Rotating exhibitions run the gamut, featuring historical masters such as Francisco Goya and Pablo Picasso as well as contemporary heavyweights Kara Walker and Christo. Through May 22, see “Samuel Bak: Survival and Memory,” dark surrealist landscapes arising from the artist’s experience as a Holocaust survivor. Bak and his mother escaped a German labor camp and hid in a Benedictine convent until liberation. An artist since childhood in Poland’s Vilna Ghetto, Bak uses his own symbolic language to incorporate Jewish history and culture. Also on view is “Pop Art Prints,” a collection of 30-plus prints announcing the triumphant arrival of pop in the early 1960s. In contrast to abstract expressionism, the style celebrated consumerism and employed highly reproducible methods of production, such as printmaking. With works from artists including Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg and Andy Warhol, the show offers an accessible crash course in an influential movement.

Vermonters have a nickname for early spring: mud season. As the snow starts to melt, the state’s farmlands and dirt roads become a mucky mess — one last hurdle from Mother Nature before the idyllic days of green grass and blue skies. So rain boots are recommended for Sheep & Shear Delights, an exciting day at the Shelburne Farms barnyard — a nonprofit model farm just eight miles south of Burlington. Timed during lambing season, this local rite of spring has a special soundtrack: a symphony of bleats from baby sheep. Visitors can meet the fuzzy new flock and spend the day working with wool as farmhands offer washing, spinning and felting demos. Meanwhile, experts engage in the backbreaking work of shearing full-grown sheep, prepping them for the summer heat that, we’re sure, is just around the corner. Les Vermontois surnomment le début du printemps la « saison de la boue », et pour cause! Avec la fonte des neiges, les terres agricoles et les routes non pavées de l’État se transforment en véritable marécage — une dernière épreuve à subir avant le retour du beau temps et du ciel bleu. Les bottes de pluie sont donc de mise pour la journée Sheep & Shear Delights dans l’enclos de Shelburne Farms, une ferme modèle sans but lucratif située à seulement 13 kilomètres au sud de Burlington. Ce rituel du printemps, qui coïncide avec la période de l’agnelage, est rythmé par une symphonie bien particulière : celle du bêlement des agneaux. urlington City Arts curates art exhibits in three areas of the airport: the Skyway, the area above the escalator and the walls facing security for Gates 1-8. Whether you’ve arrived early for a flight or are waiting to pick up passengers, do take the time to look around! In March and April, the Skyway features Jeffrey Herwood’s photography of Vermont’s “seldom-seen scenes” — from a beam of light after a rainstorm to an earlymorning sunrise. Emily Mitchell’s colorful paintings, depicting nature’s bubbles, trees and birds, are on view in the Gates. Starting in May, painter Judy Hawkins’ landscapes of Vermont marshes, fields and skies appear in the Skyway. Nancy Calicchio’s en plein air works play with light and shadow, and hang in the Gates. All season long, Cameron Davis’ “Endless Spring” series, capturing a spirit of renewal and awakening, can be seen above the escalator. If you’re going up, be sure to turn around and look at the wall behind you. But watch your step! All of these artists live in Vermont. R
onald “Baz” Bazman got into air traffic control almost by accident. In 1981, the Estes Park, Colo., native was working his way through college as an electrician when a carpenter friend mentioned he was taking the test to become an air traffic controller. President Reagan had just fired 11,000 unionized ATC workers who’d gone on strike, and the Federal Aviation Administration needed replacements. Ironically, the friend didn’t pass the test; Bazman did. Now 54, Bazman has worked at half a dozen different airports; he took over as Burlington International Airport’s air traffic manager in December 2014. BTV’s airspace spans from ground level to 10,000 feet and 40 miles in all directions. Though BTV is quieter than most international airports, it accommodates a diverse mix of planes: commercial airliners, private jets, flight school planes and military aircraft. Bazman explained how he handles the unique challenges they pose. What personality traits are crucial for doing your job well? Typically, air traffic controllers are type-A personalities and lean toward being authoritative personalities. There are exceptions, of course. I’m more of a “let’s collaborate” person. The other essential trait is being able to multitask to the nth degree — being able to look at one thing, talk about something else, give instructions simultaneously and listen to what else is happening in the room. How many tasks are you managing at any given time? You’re constantly thinking about what aircraft are doing versus what they should be doing. You’re looking for conflicts between different aircraft, so you’re playing a three-dimensional chess game all the time and trying to make order out of it. Of course, the top concern is maintaining the safety of the system. You’re always thinking about what the pilots are facing: Are they in icing conditions? Are they in convective activity? Are they in the clouds versus in the clear? Are they practicing maneuvers? There are lots of factors. 30 BTVMAGAZINE.COM

En ce qui me concerne, je suis plutôt axé sur la collaboration. Autre trait essentiel, il faut être en mesure de mener plusieurs tâches de front – il faut pouvoir regarder une chose, parler d’une autre et donner des instructions simultanément, tout en prêtant oreille à tout ce qui se passe dans la salle. Bien entendu, la priorité est d’assurer la sécurité des activités, en tenant compte des conditions. Y a-t-il de la glace? De l’activité convective? L’appareil est-il est à la hauteur des nuages? Les pilotes s’exercent-ils à des manœuvres? Beaucoup de facteurs sont en jeu.
Is it stressful? It can be. There are moments where you earn every penny you’re being paid. It’s not just the number of planes you’re working, but also the conditions you’re working under. Maybe there’s snowremoval equipment on the runway. If there’s convective activity in the area, you have to dodge aircraft in and out of weather cells. Military operations throw a different spin on things.

What was your scariest moment? Probably the most complex moment occurred while I was working departures at Detroit Metropolitan Airport. One morning I had four Northwest Airlines jets in a row lift off, and as soon as they talked to me they declared emergencies. Two I had to reblend into the arrival flow immediately. One went out to dump fuel, and one went into a holding pattern to work through the problem. From a stress standpoint, that was pretty high in my book.
