Jam With Us! Attention, job seekers and college students: You don’t have to move to San Francisco, New York or Boston to build a career in the tech sector. Are you hoping to get in on the ground floor at an exciting new startup? Looking for a steady, good-paying gig with great benefits? Need an internship to polish your résumé? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, head to this year’s Vermont Tech Jam. TECH JAM

Turns 1 ! • This is the 10th Tech Jam, but not the Jam’s 10th year. There were two in 2008 — one on January 28 and another on October 25. After that, we decided one a year was enough. • Back in 2007, when we were planning the first one, we called it the Vermont 3.0 Tech Jam. Everyone was talking about Web 2.0, so we took that to the next level. We dropped the “3.0” in 2011, when people started asking why we hadn’t released new versions — 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, etc. • In January 2008, Dealer.com had 110 employees working in Burlington’s South End. Fastforward to 2016, and you can add a zero to the end of that figure. • The Jam has moved almost every year. In part, that’s because we want the setting to be as fresh and innovative as the technology. But it’s also because Burlington doesn’t have a downtown convention center — yet! • The National Aeronautics and Space Administration brought its traveling exhibit “Exploration Experience” to the Burlington waterfront for the 2010 Jam at Main Street Landing Performing Arts Center. Visitors could see an

his year’s Tech Jam is number 10. Much has changed since Seven Days and a coalition of institutional partners organized the first one. There are now many more tech events — maker faires! LaunchVT! Innovation Week! There are enough tech companies in the Burlington area that the New York Times has called the city “a ‘smart’ green tech hub.” We’re proud that the Tech Jam has been part of that growth. As this annual event hits double digits, we thought we’d take a look back and share some fun facts about the Jam.

immersive film about space and touch a moon rock. Unfortunately, even NASA couldn’t control the weather: A torrential downpour kept most Jammers from trekking to the trailer. • In 2011, the Tech Jam was scheduled to take place on October 28 and 29 at the Innovation Center in Burlington’s South End. But spring flooding prompted the Federal Emergency Management Agency to set up a field office in the vacant space that had been earmarked for the Jam. We were still searching for a home in September when the Borders store on the Church Street Marketplace closed. Nick & Morrissey Development saved our bacon that year. The funky old Borders store is still our favorite venue. • 2011 was also the year that Burlington artist Coberlin “Coby” Brownell made the Tech Jam mascot into an augmentedreality sculpture installation. Smartphone-toting Jammers who downloaded an AR app could hold up their phones and see a spaceman floating in the air — five years before Pokémon GO!

2016 2011 2008 • We’ve often used the cover of the Seven Days Tech Issue to show off new technologies. In 2010, we introduced Vermonters to the QR code. In 2013, we made the cover into an augmented-reality video of robot Bina48 talking about the future. In 2014, we had the cover design laser-printed at the brand-new Burlington Generator makerspace.

2010

• The Tech Jam mascot originally had branches growing out of its head — a nod to the “green” tech sector. The guitar in the shape of Vermont is a reference to the state’s creatives. Incidentally, illustrator Matt Douglas updated the look of this intentionally genderless figure this year.

Thanks to all of the organizing partners that have worked behind the scenes on this event over the years — especially the Vermont Technology Alliance, the Lake Champlain Regional Chamber of Commerce, the Vermont Department of Labor, Champlain College, the Agency of Commerce and Community Development, the Community & Economic Development Office of Burlington, BTV Ignite, LK Peal Consulting, Cari Kelley, Tom Jaros, Lisa Quinlan, John Young, Daphne Walker and Bruce Seifer. And thanks to the Tech Jam sponsors and exhibitors past and present — we couldn’t, and wouldn’t, have done it without you.

2016 VERMONT TECH JAM GUIDE

2008

• At the first Tech Jam in 2008, Patrick Martell snapped a cellphone photo of Gov. Jim Douglas playing Guitar Hero. It was kinda blurry, but we should cut him some slack. This was before Instagram filters, and, in fact, before Vermonters could buy smartphones.
