Let’s Jam!

Many of the state’s most interesting employers are scouting for talent during the Vermont Tech Jam, but there’s more to the annual event than better job prospects. The workshops, presentations and panel discussions at the 11th annual Jam tackle some of the biggest tech issues of the day: information security, data science, energy storage, gender diversity, automation, job training and social responsibility. Out-of-state experts include privacy experts from Facebook, a senior product manager from Tesla’s energy division, and the CTO of a New Hampshire firm that uses atmospheric data to help clients predict the impact of extreme weather events. Presenters from inside the Green Mountain State hail from some of Vermont’s most prominent companies — GlobalFoundries, Green Mountain Power, Burton Snowbards, AllEarth Renewables and Cox Automotive

(the parent company of Dealer.com) — as well as from smaller firms such as Pwnie Express, GameTheory and the new Burlington Code Academy. On Friday afternoon, the Vermont Technology Alliance, BTV Ignite and Seven Days announce the winners of the Tech Jam Awards, honoring the state’s top innovator, startup, newcomer and tech ambassador, before adjourning to the Tech Jam After Hours party to celebrate them. The Jam is a fitting conclusion to the Burlington area’s second Innovation Week. It’s also a great place to make connections. Talking with the 60-plus exhibitors on the expo floor could lead to a new job, a new client, a new startup venture. One thing leads to another. Maybe you’ll be out there looking for employees at the 12th annual Tech Jam.

ravel back in time to the pre-internet age — when a phone was just a phone — by visiting this collection of early home computers from the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s. The display includes nonoperational versions of the TRS-80 and Commodore PET, as well as functional models of the Apple IIe, Macintosh SE FDHD and IBM PC XT 5160. All of these come courtesy of ReSOURCE, a nonprofit that repairs and resells household items while providing job training programs. A working model of the Commodore 64, along with joysticks and games, has been generously provided by physics teacher and FIRST robotics mentor Dolan Patrick. Nostalgic Gen Xers might enjoy this opportunity to introduce their kids to the best-selling home computer of all time. In 2018, Retro Games Ltd. will release a C64 mini — a newer, smaller version that will come preprogrammed with 64 classic games and an HDMI cable that will plug directly into a flatscreen TV. Stop by the Vintage Tech Showcase on Friday and Saturday to experience the real thing and to see floppy disks and a back-of-the-TV switch box in action.

omen in STEM fields are accustomed to being in the minority. According to the National Center for Women & Information Technology, in 2015 women accounted for nearly 60 percent of bachelor’s degree recipients — but just 18 percent of bachelor’s degrees in computer and information sciences. The disparity is similar in engineering. According to a 2016 article in MIT News, while 20 percent of undergrad engineering degrees go to women, just 13 percent of professional engineers are female. To help women in tech feel a little less lonely, we’ve created the Vermont Tech Jam’s firstever Feminist Hackerspace. It’ll be open all day on Saturday, October 21, at the back of the expo floor. Women and nonbinary individuals of all ages are welcome to stop by and connect with other women in tech — and maybe work on a few coding projects. Volunteers from Vermont Women in Data Science and Machine Learning and the local chapters of the Society of Women Engineers and Girl Develop It will also be promoting other networking opportunities. All of these groups are actively seeking members. The Burlington chapter of Girl Develop It is also seeking new leadership. Founder and Tech Jam Ambassador Award finalist Maureen McElaney (above, top) will be stepping down at the end of the year, as will her coleader, Rachael Arnold (above, bottom). The group, established in 2013, has held more than 100 classes and events and boasts more than 1,100 members. “After five years, we want to hand the operational reins to someone else,” McElaney says. And if they don’t find successors, “Girl Develop It Burlington will be shutting its doors at the end of the year.” Anyone ready to keep them open?

10 A.M.-NOON PLEASE REGISTER ONLINE Security breaches and privacy mishaps can have catastrophic consequences, especially for small businesses. In this two-hour session, organized by the Vermont Attorney General’s Office, experts share tips and resources for implementing privacy and security best practices to protect small businesses. Attorney General T.J. Donovan moderates a discussion about meeting customers’ privacy expectations and securing customer information. Space is limited; register at techjamvt.com. Presenters include:

10-11:30 A.M. PLEASE REGISTER ONLINE This workshop is open to women and nonbinary individuals of all ages. Participants will get tools and takeaways to help them pursue the tech field, interview for that next job, find a career that fits and negotiate salaries. Following a brief panel discussion, moderated by Lindsey Lathrop of Change the Story VT, attendees may choose to join two mini sessions. Space is limited; register at techjamvt.com. Panelists include:

• Ryan Kriger, Vermont Attorney General’s Office • Bill Carrigan, Vermont Department of Financial Regulation • Jonathan Rajewski, Senator Leahy Center for Digital Investigation at Champlain College • Sona Makkar and Claire Gartland, Facebook

Using Data to Weather the Storm 12:30-1:30 P.M. Harvey, Irma, Jose, Maria — the 2017 hurricane season has been a very busy time at Weather Analytics. This New Hampshire-based company collects and analyzes the best available weather data to help clients prepare for storm-related challenges and opportunities. In this talk, organized by the Burlington Data Scientists group, chief technology officer Tom Cecere explains how Weather Analytics handles hurricanes, gives an overview of the data science field — who uses data and who uses improved, analyzed, predictive data — and offers tips on how business owners and CEOs can find and hire data scientists to tackle industry-specific problems.

Batteries Required: Tesla Comes to Vermont 2-3 P.M. PLEASE REGISTER ONLINE Two years ago, Green Mountain Power announced an unusual partnership with electric-car maker Tesla. Vermont’s largest utility became the first in the country to help its customers install Tesla’s Powerwall home battery, which stores energy produced on-site, rather than drawing from the grid. In this session, Margaret Hodes, senior product manager of grid services at Tesla Energy, explains how the company’s energy division works and offers behind-the-scenes insights into the future of energy storage technology. Josh Castonguay and Betsy Bloomer of Green Mountain Power share the latest developments in GMP’s Tesla Powerwall program. Space is limited; register at techjamvt.com.

The Next Disruption: Industry 4.0 3:15-4:15 P.M. As automation becomes more sophisticated, companies from fulfillment centers to advanced manufacturers will need to adjust to what is being called the Fourth Industrial Revolution: robotics working with computers, devices and algorithms to achieve higher productivity. This new system — the Internet of Things — has major implications for the workforce. In this session, organized by the Agency of Commerce and Community Development and moderated by IBM fellow John Cohn, experts on cybersecurity, manufacturing, workforce and IoT will discuss the impact of this new industrial paradigm and what implications it holds for Vermont businesses. Panelists include: • • • •

Panelists include: • Melissa Marcello, executive director, Champlain College Online • Kristen Kilbashian, student adviser, University of Vermont Continuing Education • Justin Head, coordinator of academic services, Community College of Vermont • Benjamin Boas, founder and CEO, Burlington Code Academy

User Groups (aka Free and Fun Professional Development) 1:15-2 P.M. School isn’t the only place to gain knowledge — local user groups offer lots of learning and networking opportunities. The price of admission is cheap — sometimes free. Some groups have sponsors that pay for pizza. A panel of user group organizers explains why these professional development opportunities are so valuable. Discussion moderated by Jennifer Graham of C2. Panelists include: • Rob Hale, principal software engineer, NRG Systems; cofounder, Vermont Code Camp; co-organizer, Vermont .NET user group; BTV Ignite fellow; Tech Jam Ambassador Award finalist • Chris Billiau, web application engineer, FreshAir Sensor; organizer, Upper Valley JS • Scott Driver, IT manager, NorthCountry Federal Credit Union; Champlain Valley VMUG leader • Maureen McElaney, developer advocate, IBM Watson Platform, founder and coleader, Girl Develop It Burlington; Tech Jam Ambassador Award finalist

How Does Outdoor Rec Intersect With Tech in Vermont? 1-1:45 P.M. Outdoor recreation is a big driver of the Vermont economy. It’s no coincidence that internationally known outdoor sports brands are headquartered in the Green Mountain State. But these companies need more than access to wilderness to thrive — many of them rely on high-tech manufacturing processes and e-commerce systems to sell their products. For others, tech products are the deliverables themselves. In this panel discussion, moderated by Agency of Commerce and Community Development Secretary Michael Schirling, employers talk about the technological aspect of their outdoor rec businesses, explain the benefits and challenges of doing business in Vermont and reveal how to get hired at one of these super-cool companies. Over the past few years, participation among Vermont students has skyrocketed. There are now more than 60 FIRST robotics teams statewide. In this session, veteran team leaders explain how to start a team, how to access new grants, and how communities and businesses can support this unique and valuable learning experience.
