GLODELL NYC VIBEZ INTERVIEW WITH THEO HANSON

H

ey Glodell, How’s it going? We are excited to have you featured as our Designer Watch for our 7Hues Hommes Street Style Issue. How does it feel?

GLO -​​It feels great to be apart of an opportunity like this as an upcoming designer.

TH -​​So, tell us a bit about yourself; How old are you, where are you from?

GLO -​​My name is Darian Ashton also known as AKA ( Glodell Dreams ) I’m 19 years old and I was born on Aug 2nd 1999 .

I was born in Brooklyn ,NY and raised in Staten Island , NY.

TH -​​Tell us the story behind NYC Vibez. How did it all begin?

GLO -​​Throughout my middle school and high school years I’ve always been

into art and fashion . I knew how to draw , paint and dress as well which made me stand out from others too . My goal was to always generate new bigger and better ideas that could potentially catch people’s attention so they could see how creative I was . In middle school I was into painting and sketching , sometimes fashion here and there . Then in high school I started to lean more towards fashion.

TH -​​What or who inspired you to become a designer?

GLO -​​Fashion influencers on Instagram inspired me to start making my own

clothes because their aesthetics were different and it made me want to create my own unique pieces .

TH -​​Did you always know you were going to be involved in fashion or the fashion industry? Were you always interested in art?

GLO -​​I never knew I would be involved in the fashion industry, but I always knew it would be something in that arts.

TH -​​How did you start your career? What was the journey that led you down this road to becoming a designer and wanting to start you own business?

GLO -​​I started painting designs on denim pieces I had laying around my room which the later leadto me cutting and sewing. Before I pursued my career as a designer I was customizing sneakers and free lance modeling .

Once I started doing the custom hand painted denim pieces it made me want to take my creativity to a higher level.

TH -​​Tell us what motivates you every day to do what you do no matter what?

GLO -​​Seeing progress and having new ideas motivates me to keep going

because I’m still trying to reach my highest potential and there’s still moor doors that need to be opened as far as meeting new people and receiving new opportunities.

TH -​​How did you go about making a sketch or a design idea a reality?

GLO -​F ​ irst I would sketch out the idea then I would do research on the fabric and materials I would need for the piece . Then sometimes I would go on YouTube to see how I can make the piece to have some kind of guide and work with the video and also go with the knowledge I have already on sewing clothes.

TH -​W ​ hat do you look forward to changing or have already began changing in particularly men's fashion as a menswear designer?

GLO -​I​ want to show the world that I can make simple but exotic pieces that you can be versatile with and make pieces where your creativity comes into play on how you will coordinate the piece in your own stylish way.

TH -​W ​ here do you see yourself as a business man in the next 7 years? What will you be doing? Where will NYC Vibez be?

GLO -​I​ can see my self having my own little head quarters built like a studio where photoshoots and business plans will take place at. I also know that I will end up having my own manufacturer to mass produce all my pieces. My goal is to get involved with the younger youth and up coming designers and guide them on how they establish their brand like mine but even better. Nyc Vibez will of course be in NYC and I would like to have a store located in Soho, NY. TH -​S ​ o Glodell… Take me back a few years before you were a designer; Who were you? What were you doing? What did fashion mean to you back then?

GLO -​I​ was always this shy and quiet kid who had tons of ideas and always looked into the future . I use to be into video games a lot a while back as well too .

Racing games were always my favorite games because you could customize the cars and put these crazy colors on it, so being that I was always into art I would get creative with the customization in the game and imagine myself in real life with car from the game . The way I looked at fashion back then was someone having to buy name brand clothes in order to be considered fly. It didn’t matter how the clothes look, as long as it was name brand it was fly.

TH -​T ​ ell us about when you first launched NYC Vibez; What was it like? What did this accomplishment mean to you? What has been some of your accomplishments as a brand? How did those opportunities come about?

GLO -​I​ first launched my brand on September 5th 2017. It felt amazing because it started with an idea in my head to now having the brand come into to reality being that I had the Instagram page up, website being built up , and camera to take pictures of my pieces. Me launching my brand proved that anything is possible if you stick to your vision it and be on top of it. I also did 3 fashion shows in the year of 2018 which was amazing being that I’ve only been designing for a year. This all happened from me just being consistent, networking and having faith.

TH -​H ​ ow did it feel when you saw your first collection? What did this accomplishment mean for NYC Vibes?

GLO -​I​ was really proud of myself for being able to create 22

something that I myself and others loved. The fact that I had a vison in my head and was able to make it come to life was mind blowing to me because it also shows how powerful the brain is too.

This was a confirmation that Nyc Vibez will be taken to a whole different level and eventually people from NY will catch on to the movement.

TH -​​Since you first began... What are some of the hurdles you encountered?

Was it hard launching a streetwear brand amongst all the others out there? What sets NYC Vibez aside from all the other men's street wear lines?

GLO -​One of my challenges that I faced was being able to keep creating pieces without forcing new ideas and being consistent with content on social media . I never found it hard launching my brand because I’ve told myself to not be in competition with no one but myself and having that mindset helped to grow my brand. The name of the brand speaks for itself which makes it stand out from other brands. Another thing about my brand is that it’s not just about clothes it’s a whole movement where it can bring creators together such rappers, models, artists, photographers..etc. The whole point is to bring everyone in the arts together.

TH -​​What advice would you give to other young designers or entrepreneurs, with a passion for fashion in art or design?

GLO -​​One thing I can say is to always be yourself no matter what.

Be humbled because being cocky won’t get you far at all. Also make sure to always be consistent and patient for what ever it is that you’re trying to do or become in life.

The last time you were here with us last year in January; you were gearing up for your single release "Heaven Help Us". A little over a year later and it is finally here.

TH -​​How does it feel?

DWH -​ You know, I must say it really feels great. A lot

of thought, time and other peoples talents went into this record not just mine. To see all the love that it is receiving I’m really taken aback.

TH -​What was your inspiration behind the song?

DWH -​Honestly there were several places or artists

I pulled inspiration from but one day I came across “Project 1814 Rhythm Nation” this was the making of Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation. The vision, the sound behind it inspired me to write something that speaks to society but you could still nod your head to, something with a groove, something with a futuristic sound, some shit Missy and Timbaland would do. That’s how the song was born. I also spent time watching Bob Marley, Nina Simone and Sam Cooke documentaries that also inspired me.

TH -​​We saw you were featured in a few popular radio shows talking about and promoting the single and just the overall message behind "Heaven Help Us". Tell us about those few recent experiences at the radio shows you were featured on.

DWH -​Promo is always cool, the funniest interview I have had thus far promoting Heaven Help Us was with Jack Thriller over at This Is 50. Always coming with the jokes and wild questions so you gotta stay on your toes as well just enjoy yourself. Shout out to the brother Jack!

TH -​​Congrats again on your single release...What's your next step while your single is out?

DWH -​Thank you! Next step is continued promotion, lock in a few fashion campaigns hopefully because I want to be the whole package, the look, the sound, the pen AND the ARTIST. TH -​​Will there be a music video following soon?

DWH -​We are gearing up to shoot the visual for Heaven

TH&TTM -​W ​ e’ve seen you regularly feature during New York Fashion Week

on the Street Style circuit, can you tell us, are you a native New Yorker and does the city inspire your style?

AG -​ I am a native new yorker now but I was born and raised in Guyana until I came to New York in 2003 April 20 something. This city does inspire my style because there is so much to see in the streets of Soho, New York or even on the train sometimes. This city is so diversed and I only saw it that way until I went to Miami, and Vegas. These two cities are not the most idea to even see diversity but I still notice how diverse of a city I live in until I traveled else where. New York is so inspiring that you can find inspiration from homeless people with fashion because weather homeless pay attention to their fashion I do fashion they actually can dress better than some people with homes.

TH&TTM -​S ​ treet style photographer/model/stylist/influencer, you are the

epitome of the multi-hyphenated generation, which role did you take on first when you were just starting out in the industry, and how did that lead to

your other roles?

AG -​ Well to be honest I would say I took on the role

as a photographer first because when I got a camera I would call myself a photographer but since I moved to New York I always liked to look good but never was advanced as I am now with my personal style. I say this because we as humans always try to look our best even if we are not into fashion but being into fashion more just means that you would think about it all day or be really into buying brands or none brands in order to curated a individual style to stand out. Then came modeling gigs because as a kid people always compliment me on my looks until this day so I try to go for it. I am not a signed model or anything but I have gotten a quiet couples of gigs because of someone I know who worked somewhere that needed a model. Then came the stylist behavior of wanted to dress people because I dress myself everyday and get influences by the photography street style scene when I shoot people. I shoot some really fly people and it is so hard to not get inspired me from them. Everyone I every photographed made me become into fashion and that made me interested in dressing others. My career is still developing but I could not even imagined my self to the person I am now until today came and I am grateful for all my experience good or bad.

THE MULTI-HYPHENATED GENERATION

TH&TTM -​​Your social media platforms have allowed

your fans to follow your style journey to the curated man you are today, can you talk to us about how you have developed your style from Buddha graphic tees to Gucci hood accessories?

AG -​ My social media platform is definitely helpful to show fans or new followers who are not a fan yet to see my style because Instagram allows someone to see you visually without being physically there in the present. Having fans do help you stay on top of your game because they remind you of your main reason for starting the thing you created on instagram or elsewhere because of all their love and support. My styled evolve or changed because of being inspired by others. I had no idea I would dress the way I do now until the future came but I get inspired from Instagram to the streets, to almost anything motivates me to become better in my craft of photography or personal style. I can sit down and just look at a pencil, get upset I can't find the sharpener and it makes me feel mad I can't draw no more so I get motivated to go outside to shoot some architecture. My upset energy is channeled onto something else that makes me go harder. My style changing basically comes from being open minded,

because it allowed me to change into cloths I could never see myself wearing in the past when I was stuck in a none open minded state of thinking. If you can’t open up you will never change your life or even your personal style.

TH&TTM -​​One of the many hats you wear, is as a stylist for Topshop, how did

you go from street style to stylist, and is this a label you wear comfortably?

AG -​ I do wear Topshop Topman comfortably because I like the cloths and

obviously not everything suits me because not everything I like. It is easy or naturally for me to go from street style photographer for fashion week to stylist at Topman because it goes hand and hand. As a street style photographer I see all the trends or new and latests pieces from the female fashion bloggers or editors who work at Magazine wearing brands I see online so it is easier to be up to date and style for Topman.

TH&TTM -​​Social media is fast becoming a way

for brands/clients to discover emerging talent, can you tell us how you use your platforms to tell your story, and is this how the clients that you work with as a stylist found you?

AG -​ Instagram hasn't bought me any clients yet to style but I believe one day it will because instagram is a powerful tool for marketing your talents. I found a few clients for stylist right there on the job by speaking to them person to person. I use instagram to tell my story by posting outfit pics so show my style

and sometimes I have videos or so to show them up to date projects or things that interest me for future goals.

TH&TTM -​Y ​ ou have such a strong sense of personal style, which

comes across on your IG account and tumblr, is this something that influences you when working with new clients?

AG -​ I have thought what if I styled guys as a profession but I never thought that far to who I would style, styling for look books or even fashion shows. I would consider styling models because as of shooting models I see how much fun stylists that style my shoots have fun and I myself have fun styling myself so why not another person. This does bring a light to me now as you brought it up. I would like to style music artist such as Lil wayne, Dwayne Wade, Drake, Migos, Jay z, Big Sean, because I see them being opened to my type of style which is a taste of hip hip and high end or none high end descontructive pieces. i don’t know how to describe my style exactly so if u see another word that describe it u can use it in last sentence.

TH&TTM -​S ​ o, we’ve just had the

Grammys and the Oscars are coming up next, can you tell us what 7 stars from the film or music industry you would love to style?

AG -​ I would love to style someone I know that will be open to something I would wear myself but I also would not mind styling someone who does not dress like me and the names of people I one day like to dress is lil wayne, dwayne wade, Jay z, Drake, Chris Brown, denzel washington, and John Travolta etc I picked some of these people because I like their work and would love to work with them.

INDUSTRY INSIDER

TH&TTM -​I​ ts been widely reported

that menswear is set to be a major growth area for the luxury market, with a renewed interest in the recent fashion weeks across the globe, largely due to the appointment of Kim Jones at Dior Homme and Virgil Abloh at Louis Vuitton, what do you think is driving this shift in focus onto Menswear?

AG -​ The driving shift is probably because they hype of a career some of the men designer individuals who design in the industry has gotten so much attention from the youth or men in general caught the eyes of others who don't design for mens makes them want to pay attention to menswear more now so they try separating women and men fashion week to showcase the important of the both genders.

TH&TTM -​Th ​ e street style scene has grown exponentially over the

past 5 years, and we are now seeing brands tap into this aesthetic, whether its collaborating with sneaker brands such as Nike or releasing limited edition items, do you feel that the ‘Street’ is now more influential than the runways in dictating trends?

AG -​ MMMMM good question, I am not even sure but here go. I think the streets set the trends and the brands will figure out what is hot then mass produce the trend to us and we now realize what is trending. When it is in the streets before it hit the fashion shows we might sometimes not know it is a trend until the fast fashion stores copy designs from high end designer runway cloths. The streets is all culrtrally things so it is natural to us because we love it. The brands see the culture and see what we might like then make it so we can buy it.

TH&TTM -​​Speaking of trends, from

the fanny pack to the cross body, and the oversized tote, men on-andoff the runway have started to fully embrace accessories, what do you think of ‘Man Bags’ for the Fall 2019 season?

AG -​ I think man bags/fanny pages and so one is cool. Man i can't believe I myself wear Man Bags right now. I could have never seen myself wearing a tote but now I do. I think it is all in the mind of the beholder. If you know your sexuality and what you stand for you shouldn't be afraid to wear what you want. One of the man reasons most guys would not wear a tote is because they think it is too feminine but I come to realize that it does not matter. I like wearing mine because a book bag just make me feel like I am in high school all over again.

TH&TTM -​In your early years as a

street style photographer, how did you go about standing out in such a crowded market, and how did your gig with Pause Magazine come about?

AG -​ Well I never had a plan to stand out to be honest but I guess I stood out without even trying. I would just take photos of people in the street like any other street style photographer but my images would come out different and pleasing. Every artist has a different touch to their art that no one else can imitate. I started shooting tumblr popular kids at these tumblr meet ups and i gained 30k followers in like 1 summer because the popular kids like Ian conner, glenn brown and Jo aka Valid like salad followers would follow me since I had photos of the people they liked to see. I then took photos of random people with style in soho and it was very organic because not much photographers was doing it or if they were they would not select the people I choose for street style. My fans likes that and I continued to grow. One day on Facebook a model agent

from agency contacted me to photograph models and i thought he wanted to have me model but i wasn't into that at the time so i ignore it because it felt fake like spam. I think thought to myself Iam throwing away a opportunity so i searched months and years back into Facebook for the message, found it then i shot a few models, went to fashion week starting in 2013, maybe in 2015 I ran into some guy who was working for pause and he asked if I would ever like to shoot for Pause and I said yea so the rest was history.

TH&TTM -​​When you started out in the industry as a new-gen

stylist, how were you able to build up those industry relationships with designers and showrooms?

AG -​ Not many designer relationships because most of the shows i go to from fashion week is from Pause Magazine sending me out as a photographer and a showroom stylist hasn't been a thing for me yet but soon come to life one day.

TH&TTM -​​Having the opportunity to walk your first runway for

Bobby Day NYC at Brooklyn Fashion Week last year must have felt like a major accomplishment, what lead up to him asking you to walk in his show?

AG -​ Yea that was a good accomplishment for me because it was the first runway I ever did and I find it so easy because I am comfortable with posing and walking movements from having experiences with seeing model from fashion shows I have shot and posing in front of my own camera for outfit pics on instagram. He asked me to modeled throw instagram because he liked the way I dress and my looks in all.

FUTURE THINKING

TH&TTM -​I​f you could collaborate with any 7 brands/designers

on a worldwide campaign – either behind or in front of the camera – who would they be?

AG -​ I would say raf Simons, Supreme, Nike.

TH&TTM -​With the rise of street style influencers turning their

passion into fully-fledged brands, alongside the need for a fresh crop of men’s influencers, is this a path you can see yourself taking and what would the Antonio Griffith brand look like in 7 years time?

AG -​ I can see myself being a bigger street style influencer on instagram 7 years from now because 7 years is plenty of time to build a brand and make connections with the right people. Also more people will see the vision of my personal style as something that will inspire them to support me more and more until they see me live the full dream of doing either a photographer, model, and stylist or just one out the 3 full time.
