going to drop this "Haute" Couture Issue and bring in the Fall in style. We dropped two Mode issues this month that include more pages than usual. We usually try to shoot for
anywhere between 80 to 90+ pages..we clearly went over 130+ pages this month. Honestly guys, the only reason I created multiple issues is 1...we were getting hella submissions, and 2...we wanted to make it fair enough to purchase across the board knowing that the companies publishing our work went up in price after the cost of shipping and tax was included. But seeing that we are not receiving anything significant in sales, I think moving for I will just shorten the issues, until we only allow the top elite for one huge issue each month. Less stress on me, the editor, and more pressure on the contributors, to go out there and create something that'll make us want to include you in the next upcoming issue. My main goal is to focus on our website and continue to build that platform so we can provide more content, and I can't do that when I'm spending more time creating multiple issues. We are coming up on year 4 in February, so we're still babes, but the adventure is an adrenaline rush to say the least, and we're enjoying every second of it. And we appreciate everyone who's been part of this process and contributed to our vision of a new, trendsetting, creative publication. Once again, we just want to take time out to thank everyone who has contributed to our creative community and to everyone who has

supported us on our journey. Our themes for the remaining months of 2018 are still on our website, so be sure to go check them out and download them once you get a chance. The True North continues to export refreshing talent to the global creative scene, with Zabel being the latest to catch our eye. A painter born and raised in the French suburbs of Quebec, this otherworldly old soul claims to offer a ‘romantic universe between figurative and abstraction’. Her visuals don’t disappoint. Zabel has made a name for herself in the local Quebec art scene, and recently caught the eye of collectors and enthusiasts from all over. She uses spatulas and a vast color palette to create scenes of everyday glamour featuring a cast of characters. Zabel is a prodigy to pay attention to, and she has definitely done her homework. Her colorplay and fluidity channels Impressionist-era greats while paying homage to the Renaissance Period via humanity and drama. Zabel’s work has won various awards, including the 1st Jury Prize at the Symposium de l’Ile St-Quentin two years in a row and 1st Gallery Choice at the Prix International des Galeries. TH: Hello Sam, How are you? SA: I’m great! Thank you for having me. TH: So tell us a bit about yourself; where are you from? SA: I grew up in Oceanport, New Jersey. Despite the reality television shows about the Jersey Shore, it's honestly just a cute little beach town filled with wonderful people that happens to be super accessible to the best city in the whole world for people with big dreams. TH: We are excited to have you featured in our Summer Issue. How does it feel? SA: It feels very cool! It makes me feel somewhat accomplished. TH: Tell us the story behind Abruzzo Swimwear. What started it all? SA: This is a such a loaded question for me. I really believe I was born to be a fashion designer. When I was 15, I worked until 11 o’clock at night, in a luxury boutique after school and commuted into the city by myself on Saturday’s to take sewing classes at FIT. I really was, and still am, totally obsessed. I would to go shop for fabric and literally sew dresses on my body when I was 16. I remember constantly using the seam ripper with frustration and complaining about it to my grandma. I distinctively remember her saying to me “if you think you’re not going to have to rip then don’t sew” and that statement has always stuck with me, in more ways than one. None the less, I persisted. Eventually, it just clicked. I stopped screwing up as much. I would come up from the basement in a new dress after 20 minutes of sewing to find my mom like “what in the world?!” And you know it’s funny, it was like I wanted to keep it all a secret, I would get complimented at school all the time and would never tell anyone I made it except when I was asked directly “did you make that?”, which was not often. I didn’t want the attention. Truthfully, I just did it for the love. I knew deep down I would have my time like Chanel. (still waiting for that moment) but you know, I’m not really in any rush to reach it anymore, I love this time in my life right now. TH: Was design always your greatest passion? SA: Well not to be cliché but I’ve wanted to be a “rich and famous” fashion designer ever since I was a young girl. When I was little, however, I wanted to be an Oceanographer, or a pop singer like Xtina, Brittany or Aretha Franklin. The year that I was in the 1st grade, I belted out “RESPECT” waving around a feather boa at the school talent show while all the other girls did their best choreographed lip-sync to “Baby One More Time.” My grandma used to call me “her star” and came to all my school plays and concerts. It was through women like my grandmother in which I developed my taste that embodies who I am as a designer. Our love for all things beautiful, classic & romantic (with a hint of sexy) is what I think drew us together. We can all love and appreciate the “absolutely never boring” in my family. TH: Tell us what motivates you everyday to do what you do no matter what? SA: Love. 24

TH: How did you go about making a sketch a reality? SA: You know it’s funny, I’m not a fan of sketching... How creative can you really be in a sketch? I’m attempting to plan out what I think I want, but for me, I never actually know what I want until I start making what’s in my head out of the fabric. The design usually ends up being totally different by the time I've finished anyways! TH: What do you look forward to changing or have already begun changing as a swimwear designer? SA: My favorite thing about swimwear is the ability to promote a positive body image. I love bikinis because I love the way they make me feel. I feel like a strong and powerful woman in a skimpy bikini. I want all women to understand this. All women are beautiful, I design to show them. Love your body, love yourself. TH: Where do you see yourself as a business woman in the next 7 years? What will you be doing? SA: In 7 years I see myself as a mentor to passionate creatives all over the world. Obviously, I see myself in a position where I had my time and still always will be a top dog but choose to create new exciting designs on my own terms now while guiding others. It feels good to me when I’m able to motivate others to chase their dreams as so many people have done for me, my entire life. I remember always feeling like “why is this person doing this to help me without expecting anything in return?” I totally get it these days. TH: So Sam… If you will; I want to go back in time and I want you to walk me through how it all began. SA: Some badass women, and a crazy dad. My grandmother is the reason I sew and the reason why I think I appreciate hand sewn embellishments, luxurious little details, etc. She was a super talented seamstress and we shared a love for old Hollywood glamour, which is what struck my obsession with Audrey Hepburn. My mother is my diligent work ethic and quick wit. She’s the one who
dragged me to get a job at 15 in the most fashionable place in town when all my friends were scooping ice cream to collect dollar tips -I was by far the youngest employee. She’s the one that made me hop on the train and find FIT in the city by myself when I was scared, and she’s the one that made me get on airplanes when I was petrified as a child. She’s tough but she’s always right at the end of the day, and she’s also just fabulous... I love my mother’s style. Finally, my father is a street kid and entrepreneur. He’s the kind of smart you can’t learn in school but if you hang around long enough you pick up a thing or two. I’m lucky to have such an amazing dad. TH: Since you’ve launched ABRUZZO SWIM we see your line has already been worn by a few major fashion influencers like Rocky Barnes and Tash Oakley. How did that opportunity present itself? How did it feel when you saw their images in your swimsuits? What did this 7HUESMAG.COM

accomplishment mean for Abruzzo Swim. SA: I met Rocky in Miami over swim week last July wearing one of the bathing suits I made (the Peony top in Maui with the flowers) and she loved it. I figured I’d be stupid not to take it off and give it to her so that’s what I did Lol!! When she posted the suit on Instagram, I was having lunch with my husband and threw my phone across the room screaming and he thought something horrible happened ha-ha! Seeing such fashion forward icons like Rocky and Tash enjoying my art is what makes all the hard work and sacrifice worth it. TH: Did you always know you were going to be involved in fashion or the fashion industry? Were you always interested in art? SA: I knew at a very young age that I wanted to be a designer, but like I said I wanted to be an Oceanographer before I figured it out. I was somewhat of a tomboy before fashion and would go ring the neighbor’s doorbell in my rain boots and bikini to go swimming in the pool when it was snowing outside! TH: How did you start your career? What was the journey that led you down this road to becoming a designer and wanting to start you own business? SA: I think when I finally moved to the city for fashion school is when it all changed. Although I loved school, the internships, job opportunities, and the world around you are just priceless when you’re a fashion student in Manhattan. I mean what 20-year old are sitting in on buying appointments at MILK for Barney’s? I really learned so much about luxury and the business of fashion from all the interning and work opportunities in the city. You really can be “in” if you put your hand out and ask. Combining these experiences with travel, my past retail entrepreneurship

ventures, and my creativity is what led me up to finally putting all the puzzle pieces together to build Abruzzo Swim. TH: Since this is still new for you. What are some of the hurdles you have encountered? SA: Well it’s all hard, especially when you’re in your 20’s and everyone is going to school for some sort of crazy science major or your bestie just graduated as a D1 athlete and you're over here like “I’m working on becoming a bikini designer.” A lot of people don’t understand it either, and sometimes that means the end of some friendships, but who are meant to stay will be supportive. Also, for me the self-doubt thing is real, and it comes in waves, but the universe tends to say “snap out of it” in funny magical ways shortly after I have those thoughts which make me feel like I’m doing the right thing. TH: I truly believe you will be nothing but great with this collection and with everything that you do..What advice would you give to a young designer or entrepreneur, with a passion for fashion in art or design? SA: Just keep creating, keep showing the world, be ok with being told no. Not everyone is going to understand your art, and well that’s their problem. They’ll understand it next season most likely once everyone else is wearing it and telling them it’s cool! love fairy tales because of their haunting beauty and magical strangeness. They are set in worlds where anything can happen. Frogs can be kings, a thicket of brambles can hide a castle where a royal court has lain asleep for a hundred years, a boy can outwit a giant, and a girl can break a curse with nothing but her courage. The interpretation of dreams is the royal road to
a knowledge of the unconscious activities of the mind. In this beautiful editorial, Toby Nguyen takes us into his creative mind and shows us his latest piece of art in the form of living models, stunning fashion, and breathtaking imagery. Let's hear the story of a man on a mission for creative greatness. Interview by Editor: Will Mydell WM: Hi Toby, it's a pleasure having your work on our cover for our August issue. How does it feel? TN: Thank you, I’m happy to be apart of your magazine for the August issue. WM: The images look amazing, how on Earth did you ever assemble everyone for this project. Talk about a huge team. TN: Thank you; the process starts with a casting call where I sent out a model request to agencies. Once I get the packages with male and female models that are in town and available, my team and I go over each package and make our selections. WM: How did you get involved with photography? Was it always a passion, or something you kind of came into? TN: It honestly starts out with a passion but I never intended to make a career out of it. I was experimenting with different types of style of photography when my father first bought me my very only DSLR. As time progresses I started getting into the fashion industry more, and so I’ve been crafting my art ever since. WM: Can you tell us what your go-to gear would be on a shoot? Inquiring minds would like to know. TN: I’m currently shooting with a Nikon D5 and one of my go to lenses is Nikon Nikkor AF‑S Lens for Nikon F ‑ 85mm ‑ F/1.4. WM: What do you deem to be essential lighting requirements for your work? Also, are you a large modifier shooter, or do you like using smaller light modifications? TN: As a photographer I like to explore different methods when it comes playing around with lighting. Also, I like to shoot on location as well and experiment with natural lighting. WM: On the topic of gear: do you think it really matters when trying to make that great picture? This is great inspiration for beginner photographers. TN: Honestly from my perspective is not always about the expensive gadgets, but is more about the eye of the artist and lighting definitely plays a big part of it as well. Now days, you can shoot on an iPhone
and still get an equivalent quality as long If you know your lighting, composition, ect. WM: What advice do you have for the folks who want to get into photography but maybe can’t afford equipment? TN: Work with what you can afford for now and practice your crafts before deciding to upgrade. I’d recommend starting out with a beginner DSLR or a point and shooting camera. Usually these start out cameras are affordable and easy to navigate. But now days a smart phone do have high quality cameras that you can experiment with as well. WM: Do you have an assistant? If so why? TN: Yes, sometimes I have assistant(s) depends on the complexity of the project. WM: How do you get yourself inspired for a photo shoot? Moodboards... old magazine tears....cinema...what makes that light bulb above your head click on? TN: Honestly it comes random sometimes. It can either be a song that I heard on a radio, a location that intrigues me, or by engaging in the latest trends. WM: What’s your useable-to-unusable ratio when you review images from a shoot? Are you daring? will you let something slide that may come off as artistic to you but you know others may think it's not a perfect edit, or do you stick to your guns and only release prestige material? TN: I’m very articulate when it comes to releasing my work. Sometimes I trust my instinct and sometimes I take a step back and review before publishing my work. However, I’m always willing to take risks when it comes to trying something new. It is making mistakes is a great way to learn and grow. WM: Can you describe what your post-process workflow is like? TN: Once I finished with a shoot, I move forward with making the selections on the photos that I want to edit. I narrow it down to my top 10 or 15 that I think is best to edit. Once I have my top favorites I start with lightroom and then move it to Photoshop. WM: Every Photographer develops their own shooting strategy in their own unique way, be that interning, apprenticing, assisting, graduate school, on the job training, etc. How do you get the person, place or thing that is in front of your lens onto your memory card in Just the way you want it? TN: Over the years I’ve developed such a system that works best for me. Being active on social media such as Instagram, has helped me gained a reputation from modeling agencies, brands, models, actors and those who enjoyed following my work. Sometimes I would post a casting call on my social media and I would get a fast respond from people, and sometimes I would have contact through either my agent or manager. WM: Photography has a long and fascinating history. Most photographers happily admit which of their predecessor’s influenced

them and their work. How about you...Which photographers influenced you, and how did they influence your thinking, photography, and career path?
any foreigners to enter.
TN: I have a few favorite icons that I truly admired their work and esthetics. Richard Avedon, Steven Klein, Patrick Demarchelier, Annie Leibovitz, Steven Meisel to name a few. All of these artists go above and beyond with their visions, they are not afraid to try new things and I truly admired the passion in their photography.
TN: I would love to be able to get into more of films, directing and producing movies in the future.
WM: Different photographers have different end goals for their work. The most successful ones are those who can consistently get their work to say what it is they want, even if they cannot articulate what that is or how that happens. What is it exactly you want to say with your photographs, and how do you actually get your photographs to do that? TN: Sometimes when I look at an art piece; what really resonates with me is if it can be relatable, that is eye catchy, and makes me feel something that I’ve never felt before. All of these aspects are really what I want when people look at my work. I want to be able to tell a story through my work and that people can see and feel my vision when they see my photography. WM: What advice do you have for photography enthusiasts looking to go professional? TN: Never stop shooting and never limit yourself. Always be willing to learn more and never be content; but to willingly try something new. WM: Any websites or blogs you visit often?
WM: What talent would you love to have most?
WM: Anything you're still learning? TN: I’m always learning, there’s so much in the world that we have yet to uncovered. WM: Something that is overrated? TN: Hoverboard WM: Something you're saving up for? TN: A Huge Production Studio/Loft WM: If you could have lunch with anyone, who would it be?

TN: The Photography industry is rapidly changing from traditional - Toby film camera to DSLR, now to Mobile devices. So it might be harder for industry photographers to book jobs since technology is always advancing and there are so many self-proclaimed photographers out there with very WM: Name one way you market your photography? little experience. But I see myself continue crafting my photography and adding more of creative directing and producing movies. TN: Social media is such a power tool to market your talent to the world. TN: I honestly always brows online either through instagram, Twitter, Youtube. Social media is such a great engine to find inspirations and more.
WM: How important is an awesome website for your business?
WM: The readers can find out more about you where?
TN: Having a website is great way for clients to view your work and showcase your professionalism. However, I think is not necessary since having a social media account such as Instagram is also one of a great ways to present your work.

WM: If you could be invisible for one day with your camera, what or who would you shoot? TN: If I could be invisible for a day, I would like to travel to an isolated country such as North Korea. I would like to document everything while I’m there, since North Korea is such a hermit country that is tricky for
