CONCEPTS JOURNEY TO MY

DESTINATION

E

very single one of us has our own unique intelligence. Our own innate talents.

And yet the sort of intelligence and talents we seem to value most today focus on only a few of them. As a society we increasingly think of intelligence as about being good at maths or a whizz at science, having the ability to speak a foreign language or write a killer history essay. Somewhere along the line we have forgotten to value creativity and those who create things with their hands; those who think outside the box and bring their ideas to life. And yet these skills are actually the most important factors in some fantastic careers. Careers like hairdressing. In this film, the current British Hairdresser of the Year, Sally Brooks, explains why hairdressing isn’t a ‘second-best’ career; that it’s actually a career choice full of opportunity and with the ability to grow and change with you throughout your life. Along with videographer Gabriel Maciuca, also a barber, Sally takes us through the potential highlights of this exciting profession, asks big names in the industry to tell their stories. She also gives her own unique insight into what it takes to get to the very top - advice which can be translated across many other careers. With hairdressing always topping the list of happiest industries to work in and great apprenticeships available, it really is a career worth exploring. After all, what other career can offer you opportunities as varied as setting up your own business, creating trends and even travelling the world? With your innate talents, the right mentor and lots of hard work, it could be the career for you. Within the next two weeks you will be able to watch this documentary on Amazon Prime. There will also be a DVD/download with extended interviews from the artists involved

SUPER HAIR BY

JAMES CALABRIA

Salon: Franco’s of Canberra | Photographer: Sven Kovac Make-Up: Nicole Abelahm | Styling: Emma Lightbown

INSPIRATION: The shoot evolved from the 1981 film, The Cannonball Run. It is an over-the-top comedy but it got me thinking about influences of present day violence towards women. So with that in mind, I went about creating a woman that is both soft and feminine as well strong. She’s almost a super hero.

"INCEPTION" muk Haircare launches with great anticipation INCEPTION, a new global creative campaign, a new brand image and a collaborative partnership between the muk Haircare Global Creative team and internationally acclaimed photographer Rankin.

Hair Stylists: muk Haircare Global Artistic Team Product Company: muk Haircare Photographer: Rankin Make-Up Artist: Marco Antonio muk Haircare Founder and Director, Mark Gariglio, imagined a new campaign for the brand that steered away from the traditional hairdressing campaigns, and into the domain of a luxury brand, fashion campaign that spoke of the brand’s identity and their exciting new future. Mark said, “The objective of this new photo shoot is to create a vibe which has an element of tongue in cheek, playing on our brand name and heritage. The idea was to shoot the girls nude, but not to revealing - keeping an element of mystique for the viewer whilst creating a primary focus on the hair. It was important for the models to have a natural beauty and subtle sexiness, reflected in pared down make up and playful interactions, with the main focus on beautiful, styled hair.”

Simplicity

COLLECTION HAIR BY

SALLY BROOKS AT BROOKS & BROOKS, LONDON

Make-Up Artist: Lan Nguyen-Grealis | Styling: Ann Shore | Photography: Jenny Hands BRITISH HAIRDRESSER OF THE YEAR SALLY BROOKS “This collection is all about the beauty of simplicity – the shoot day had a really organic feel where it was about capturing a moment of natural beauty and effortless style. I wanted the hair to breathe, working with natural undertones in the hair colour and simple textures that are not overworked, allowing each picture to have a beautiful moment of simplicity. One linen dress was morphed to suit the model and emotion of each image without being overpowering. Make-up emphasised each model’s natural beauty, while photography was muted and saturated so the finished look was like a painting. This collection is about all the elements working together and capturing simplicity at its best.” Sally Brooks, 2018 British Hairdresser of the Year Founders Sally and Jamie Brooks and the award-winning members of the Brooks & Brooks artistic team are well placed for creative quotes on trends, styling and techniques, as well as business quotes on running a salon and motivating a team.

HABI TAT HAIR BY

ADAM ISLES

Colourist: Charlene Fernandez | Photography: Alex Dubois Make-Up Artist: Carla Dyson | Producer: Stephanie Cammarano

This collection was inspired by the world around us and more specifically by the diverse women that are a product of our eclectic environment. Each girl truly feels her surroundings. Her confidence, her style, her attitude and of course, her hair, are all boldly on display. Living in Melbourne, it is safe to say we are never short of inspiration. We are a city that is jam packed with individuals from all over the world that have chosen to settle in our blossoming city, where all are free to showcase and merge our styles. Collaboration is important to us on many levels. We gain direction in our craft from the many Melbourne based creative collabs that we are a part of. In creating ‘Habitat’ we wanted to highlight the magic we see when diverse humans mould our environment and ultimately show the distinct beauty that comes through when this infusion takes place. In addition to local creative’s, we were influenced by Australian publications. We love the fresh approach to lighting and photography. The girls of the Melbourne art scene have also inspired us. These girls are free and expressive and it is clear to see the impression that the art world has made to their bespoke styles. Understated raw hair with attitude. Colours that are paired back to the raw natural pigments but executed with a strong bold contrast. This combination of underlying pigments, natural roots and complimentary colours bring an element of beauty to the unusual placement these contrasting areas. The term ‘colour contouring’ is taken to the extreme, highlighting quite obviously where we would like the eye to go. Utilising the natural hair directions and textures have allowed each look and shape to be perfectly moulded and to convey a fresh lived in look. Graphic shapes have been softened with a natural organic finish. These girls live!!! So rather than divert from their individual beauty we chose to explore and celebrate it!!!

J. BENNY HAIR BY

JAMIE BENNY

Styling: Josh Tuckley | Photographer: Philip Veitch | Make-Up Artist: Min Sandu

JAMIE BENNY 2018 COLLECTION This collection is exploring the idea that the hair is starting to fray. It is a collection that combines cut and colour to create texture and shape. I have taken inspiration from 90s Calvin Klein and modern Tommy Hilfiger with demin clothes and the attitude of the model creating a ‘Girl next door’. With the colour work I wanted to again create this worn or lived in feeling so shadowing areas darker or adding wool into the hair as detail, both highlight focal areas in the shape and following the feeling.

HARE & BONE TEAM ETHOS We organically developed a working ethos, "Tech-Trilogy". The foundations approaching our work stems from a fundamental discipline, technicality. Three is our magic number as we strive for unity between cut, colour and finish. Above all we believe in beauty and the freedom of expression. "Hairdressers are artists and hair is our canvas"
